FATIMA: Early this morning,
Rear Admiral Ted Gordon

was abducted from his home.

A neighbor heard a struggle
and saw two masked suspects

dragging him into a van.

They caught some of it
on their security camera,

but I couldn't pull the plates.

Kidnappers typically want a ransom.

Did they make any demands
of the admiral's family?

Well, he has none.
Never married, no kids.

Couldn't find any
extended relatives, either.

He was recently on terminal leave

in advance of his pending retirement.

Is he working on anything

that could have made him a target?

So, Admiral Gordon works
with Nautical Robotics Inc.,

a civilian tech contractor in Pasadena

that develops unmanned
maritime technologies.

So, underwater robots.

You know it. And, according to the Navy,

they're currently working on a new fleet

of ocean gliders. (SIGHS)

The Navy already deploys
these for critical missions.

They can do scientific research,
catch drug smugglers,

deploy weapons.

CALLEN: Well,
both the Russian and Chinese governments

have already seized these in the past,

claiming them to be spy boats.

They're not wrong.

I mean, it could be
what's happening here,

except instead of seizing the glider,

they're seizing its engineer.

Well, why steal a glider
when you can just

kidnap somebody and have
them make one for you?

We need to talk to someone
at Nautical Robotics,

find out what could be compromised.

Castor's picking up their head developer

Jessie Fiore, he's bringing
him to the boatshed.

Okay, I'll, uh, take Rountree
and meet him there.

Sam and I will head to the crime scene.

Hey, guys, this is Jessie Fiore,
Nautical Robotics.

Uh, hi, Jessie,
I am Special Agent Kensi Blye,

this is Special Agent Rountree.
Have a seat.

Hi. I'm still not exactly
sure why I'm here.

Something about the ocean glider?

Uh, no, actually,
we wanted to talk to you

about Admiral Ted Gordon.

How closely do you work with him?

Very. He's the Navy arm of our project.

Is he okay?

He was kidnapped this morning.

You think it's related to our work?

It's a possibility.

Do you know if he was ever threatened,
for access to the technology?

I don't think so.

But if he was,
it wouldn't have worried him.

(CHUCKLES)

Ted's not scared of anything.

He's just like my dad.

Hmm.

I used to invite him
to our family barbecues.

- Yeah.

I guess you could say we had an issue.

What type of issue?

It was nothing. I'm over it.

Hmm. We'd still like to hear about it.

Yeah.

There's an entire team working
night and day, right?

But Ted goes on Marcus Moore
and completely...

I'm so sorry. Uh, Marcus Moore?

He's a popular social media
tech influencer.

More than just popular.

- He's got million subscribers.
- Wow.

He did an entire interview,
and not a word about us.

Ted's cool,

but he's full of himself.

A tiny shout-out could've
catapulted my career.

I mean, I do the heavy lifting.

Literally. When we run tests,

I'm out there deploying the glider.

He can't do it solo.

It's not a one-man band.

So, I'm sorry, did the admiral
discuss sensitive information

about the glider on Marcus Moore's show?

But I assumed he got approval.

So, ocean gliders,

they don't have propellers
or an internal engine?

No, the gliders aren't like a torpedo,

although they look like one.

No, there's a pump

which displaces the buoyancy over time,

and allows the glider to move up

and to move down through the ocean.

Similar to how air gliders works.

Except that it moves up
as easily as it goes down.

Sounds like ocean gliders
are the "wave" of the future.

- Hmm.
- And the one you're developing

is environmentally friendly, correct?

Mm-hmm. Yes, it's completely silent,

so it doesn't disrupt water currents,

it doesn't disrupt the wildlife.

And most ocean gliders

are only workable in deep oceans,

but this one, mine...

mine works in shallow seas,

it works in coastal areas...
so that it's wonderful

for biology or climate research.

And compared to other
autonomous underwater vehicles,

yours is more economical.

Oh, by far.

Well, the interview was authorized.

And he's not sharing
anything classified.

And the ocean glider can be fit
with a variety of sensors,

including compact magnetometers,

which are able to detect
certain anomalies in the ocean,

like shipwrecks or underwater munitions.

Still, it is possible
that this interview

put the admiral on someone's radar.

Well, that's one possibility.

No, the day after this interview,

Marcus Moore flew to China.

An American cybersecurity firm

claims to have proof that he met with

a group of Chinese
state-sponsored hackers.

robot babysitters for kids.

Won't be long before
Robocop's a real thing.

I wouldn't mind
partnering up with Robocop.

figure out what
the purpose of your trip was.

Work. I'm looking to expand
the reach of my show.

I was meeting with tech giants there.

Including Black Hat hackers

responsible for ransomware
att*cks on American hospitals?

Look, I had no clue
that's what they were about.

- Hmm.
- Then why'd you meet with them?

If you've seen my show,

you'd know I'm into electric vehicles,

cool gadgets, groundbreaking software.

Those guys are major players
in those arenas.

Okay, so what did you discuss?

The products they're developing.

Admiral Gordon's ocean glider?

But the day before you met with them,

you had an interview with Gordon

about this Navy technology.

Why would I talk about that in China?

And that interview was
approved by the Navy, wasn't it?

But the admiral was kidnapped...

we suspect by somebody hoping
to obtain the glider tech.

involved in something like that?

That's what we're trying
to figure out, Marcus.

KENSI: We've alerted FBI cyber,
and they will be doing

a very thorough investigation

into your connections to these hackers.

I-I should've never done that interview.

It's been a total headache
from the beginning.

How so?

The admiral was difficult.

He kept interrupting the
interview to make these calls.

He'd be in the middle
of explaining something,

and then just stop,
like four or five times.

Editing was a nightmare because of that.

Do you have any idea who he was calling?

I didn't ask. He went into the booth.

I couldn't hear what he was saying,

but it was obvious that he was angry,
and shouting at someone.

Admiral Gordon went to
a lot of trouble to hide this.

And he went to a lot of trouble
to make sure it was found.

So, who was he hoping would find it?

FATIMA: So,
I checked Admiral Gordon's phone records

at the time of his interview
with Marcus Moore.

He made several calls to a woman
named Meredith Huxley.

She's a librarian
at the L.A. Public Library.

Maps department.

A librarian?

Yeah, he called her, like, five times

in the span of one hour.

I mean, wow, he must've had something
really important to say to her.

Yeah, you know what?
Send us her location.

FBI's talking to Marcus.
While they do that,

we'll go talk to Meredith Huxley.

- FATIMA: Copy that.
- Thanks.

SAM: Admiral.

Looks like a good book.

Oh, yeah. He can't get enough of it.

It's Admiral Gordon's journal.

I found it at the crime scene.

(CALLEN CLEARS THROAT)

"I've written this book
as a guide to my adventure

"in case anything should happen to me.

I must be in distress

"and you have proven
clever enough to render aid.

That is, if I'm still alive."

SAM: So first his model ship,
then this journal.

It's like he set up
his own little security system

with codes and riddles.

Mm-hmm.

Yeah, but what's he securing?

(SCOFFS)

Buried treasure.

This is all about
a Spanish galleon in .

It wrecked, the survivors
buried silver, gold,

precious jewels, somewhere
in Southern California.

I'm beginning to understand
why this guy never married.

- May I?
- So, Admiral Gordon

had his heart set on buried treasure.

Why record it in this journal?

Why does anybody record anything?

To prove it exists.

And to make sure it remains.

SAM: I have a friend,
he's a retired Navy diver,

works in an ocean salvage
company in Florida.

Always looking
for shipwrecks and treasure.

Hasn't found anything yet.

Well, it doesn't mean
it's not out there.

Ah, I see the admiral
is quite the artist as well.

Looks like some of it was ripped out.

That's not a rip, that's a cut.
A very precise one.

Well, if this journal

is what the admiral's
abductors were after,

let's find out why.

Either we're looking for criminals

who are targeting the Navy's
maritime technology...

Or... we're on a treasure hunt.

- Meredith Huxley?

This is Special Agent Rountree, NCIS.

ROUNTREE: We're here
to ask you some questions

about Admiral Theodore Gordon.

Seriously?

Now the man sends Navy cops?

Uh, actually, we're here
because Admiral Gordon

was abducted from his home this morning.

determine its authenticity?

Yes. th century Spain.

It's printed on handmade
vellum laid paper.

It has a grid of chain lines
with watermarks,

which means it's the real deal.

So the map's valuable.

Something someone might abduct him for.

I'm not an appraiser,
but it's worth a pretty penny.

If it leads to treasure, who knows?

But it's a true antique.

where he keeps the map?

but he insisted on a climate
controlled storage space.

This is more than a hobby,

its intended route back to Spain,

he's even got the star chart

from the year the ship went down.

All right, so this guy gets
att*cked by people

who think he has the map in his house.

Right, they couldn't find it,
so they forcibly abduct him,

and think they can
make him to take them to it.

But Admiral Gordon's not giving it up.

All right. Well, we better find
out where he keeps this map,

because if they t*rture Admiral Gordon

to force him to talk,

he could be in trouble. Or worse.

He created a code to find this journal.

What if he also created
a code to find the map?

I mean, this journal
is dedicated to the galleon,

its history, its captain,
but there is only one mention...

SAM: Mm-hmm.

It's a riddle.

Of course it is,

and in the time it takes us
to figure that out,

Admiral Gordon could be dead.

I solve crimes, not riddles.

Okay, well, this is both,

and you happen to be
very good at this stuff.

is after the map and, ultimately,

after the treasure.

wouldn't mean someone could find it.

Ted's been working on this for years.

The map's legend
is the shipwreck's location.

That's why it was so tricky
for Ted to decipher.

First it requires
locating the shipwreck,

and then making complex
calculations to pinpoint

the buried treasure location on shore.

Huh. Did Admiral Gordon
ever find the shipwreck?

About a month ago,

he claimed to have located it

using his ocean glider technology.

Where?

I don't know. As soon as
he found the shipwreck,

he became even more secretive.

Uh, could you just give us a moment,

please, Meredith? Thank you.

Do you remember what that
tech developer, Jessie Fiore,

said about operating the ocean glider?

It's not a one-man job.

He said every time
they took the glider out,

Jessie Fiore was
the one who deployed it.

Which means he knows
about that shipwreck.

Meaning he knows about the map.

It's just a way to measure
north-south coordinates.

"Paloma" is the Spanish word for dove.

moving at high speeds.

So, we have a missing Navy Admiral,

a stolen treasure map and a tech guy.

SAM: Sounds like a true crime podcast.

"The Making of a Pirate."

Where is Admiral Gordon?

I can't tell you.

Can't because you don't know,
or because you don't want to?

Because I like being alive.

Has your life been threatened?

I really screwed up.

Who are you afraid of?

And everything just got completely
out of control really quickly.

Look, we're here to find Admiral Gordon

and to make sure everyone's safe, okay?
That includes you.

SAM: But you have to be up-front with us

so we can do our jobs.

Was Admiral Gordon in that van?

Yeah.

Where is it headed?

They're taking him
to the Channel Islands.

Which island? There are five.

The map doesn't name the island

because it didn't have a name

when it was drawn hundreds of years ago.

And Ted wouldn't tell me.

- Fatima.
- Sam.

Still no sign of the van.

It's possible they switched rides.

Okay, so they're headed
to the Channel Islands,

but we need to narrow it down,

so check with the
National Park Services.

If Admiral Gordon has moored his boat

or camped on one of the islands,

- they'll have records.
- Copy that.

he could locate

a buried treasure worth millions,

and that-that sounds reasonable to you?

I mean, he's located shipwrecks before.

He's worked with
professional treasure hunters

all over the world. According to him,

the odds of finding it are way
better than winning the lottery.

Well, that's not exactly
setting a high bar.

SAM: All right, so you helped him.

How'd we end up here?

When we found the shipwreck,
he refused to show me the map.

He said he'd dig it up
on his own and give me my share.

But you didn't trust him.

I was angry.

I told him we were in this together,
but he shut me out.

That's where this Jim
Bones fella comes in?

JESSIE: I joined this
treasure hunt forum online.

I met these two guys,
Jim Bones and Long John.

I told them about the map
and the shipwreck.

- You can't make this stuff up.
- You can't.

They agreed to help me. All right?

They were just supposed to break
into his house to find the map.

I didn't know they were
going to kidnap him.

Gordon's amazing.

He wouldn't give up the map,

not even after they roughed him up.

But he finally gave in when...

When what?

They put a g*n to my head
and threatened to k*ll me.

So Gordon told them about this place.

He saved my life.

Even after I betrayed him.

(FABRIC RIPS)

KENSI: All right.

KENSI: Whoa.

- Whoa.
- Huh.

It's locked.

Uh, do you have a hammer or something?

- Uh...
- ROUNTREE: Wait a minute.

Meredith, what year did the ship wreck?

Right, this drawer
is wide open and is empty.

Yeah.

And there's a key in the lock.

He gave it to us.

It's the only one that has a lock on it.

Books. That's it.

It's stuck.

There's gotta be
