Previously on "Switched at Birth"...

If my mom was drinking, I'd know about it.

Mom!

I'm not ready to sign my rights away.

I can't raise this kid.

The school board voted to shut down Carlton for good.

I cannot lose that second chance.

In my heart, I know I'm the one who should raise her.

Everybody, good luck. Good luck.

(Alarm blaring) Calmly.

The cops are here.

(Police radio chatter)

How long is this going to go on?

I don't know, but I don't like all those police cars here.

Yeah, did you see...

Sir, we will handle this.

We'll wait all night.

Oh, look.

(Camera clicking)

We will end our occupation of Carlton when the following demands are met: The Carlton campus will remain open and the student body will be comprised of deaf students only.

And there will be no recriminations for any of the students involved in the occupation.

You are in no position to be making demands.

The only question right now is will you be removed by force or will you come out voluntarily?

I really do appreciate you taking a stand.

-_

-_

(Pounding on door)

Uh, they're banging on the door.

(Police radio chatter)

(Gasps)

Oh!

What will you do next? Was anybody hurt in there?

Um, you know he's deaf, right?

All: Bay!

But you're not. If you can hear what I'm saying what were you doing in there?

Same thing as everyone else in there... protesting the closing of the best school that I've ever been to.

Can I quote you on that?

Sure. Bay Kennish.

Ow! My underarm.

Okay, I just don't understand... why'd you have to ruin the play?

Everyone worked so hard!

Did you two really think that you could change the school board's mind with that prolonged temper tantrum?

Have you people never heard of civil disobedience?

Martin Luther King? This is how change happens.

I've got this.

All right, let's just all get some rest. We'll talk in the morning.

(Phone vibrates)

(Kathryn sighs)

Hey! Did you talk to the press?

Yeah. Why, am I quoted?

We didn't take over the school so a hearing person could speak for us.

No, you took it over so you could make sure that people like me never go there again.

Heyo.

Hi.

Ahem...

So I have some k*ller news.

Oh yeah?

Um, a few months ago this really inspiring guy came to talk to our youth group.

He started his own nonprofit that helps communities in Peru get access to clean water?

Yeah, I've heard of stuff like that.

Yeah.

So I applied for this... scholarship thing... and I got it!

That's amazing!

Yeah.

I'm gonna be teaching kids music and English.

Oh.

Man, I'd love to teach music to kids.

Well, I mean, I would love for you to come, but technically it is a missions trip, so we're gonna be helping people out, but also witnessing to them.

That's cool.

I'll hang back here.

So is this like an over-the-summer kind of thing?

Or?

The end of summer.

For six months.

As in 180 days?

183.

I counted.

This could be an incredible and humbling experience and I really feel like...

Of course I want you to go. That sounds amazing.

It's just, you know...

I know.

We just got back together.

I am gonna hate being away from you, too.

But in the context of the rest of our lives, six months really isn't that long.

The rest of our lives?

That sounds like thousands of days.

Years even.

Hmm.

You heading out?

Oh yeah.

Early bird gets the State Senate seat, despite his pathetic polling numbers.

A lot can change in three days. (Coffee pouring)

Oh yeah, we'll see about that.

There's a lot of Kennish in the news today and it's not exactly campaign-related.

Look at this.

Patricia Sawyer's going to have a field day with that.

Oh hey! You guys want some lunch? I just made some tuna salad.

Yeah, sure, sounds great.

We're engaged.

To be married.

I got that. Ahem.

That's... just... wonderful news.

(Giggles)

John: Huh...

Yeah.

I'm not expelled.

Oh, that's fantastic!

There's a big assembly tomorrow and we're all expected to be there.

Well, I broke out the waffle maker.

I thought we could have breakfast.

I'm not hungry.

(Stomps)

We still need to talk about that text you sent while you were in there.

I need to contact Emmett and everyone and see what this means.

I understand that, but we still need to talk.

(Sighs)

You were passed out.

After a long day of job-hunting.

I think I've earned the right to fall asleep in front of the TV without being called a drunk.

You smelled like alcohol.

I know Bay is all wound up because I am dating a musician, so I am not sure what she has told you, but I'm fine.

I am not drinking.

You promise?

Promise.

Okay. I'm sorry.

Let me know what they tell you.

That's just insane.

Wasn't he just in the hot tub with Patricia Sawyer's daughter?

Yeah, which apparently drove him right back into the arms of Nikki.

They're both 18, so there's legally nothing we can do about it.

I know. I know.

They're looking for apartments, honey, and jobs.

And this is so unlike him.

This obviously is not just gonna go away.

I don't know where this is coming from.

Well, since you took him to that church and he met Nikki...

Oh, so it's my fault?

No, I'm just saying not sleeping with someone till you're married is one way to find yourself engaged.

I don't think this is about sex.

Well, not just about sex.

Why couldn't he just occupy his high school like everybody else in the family?

We have to do something.

I know.

I know.

Bay: She just, like, jumped down my throat, saying no one asked me to speak for the deaf community.

All I did was answer a question.

It's like she's gone from student-body leader to Kim Jong-Daphne.

What?

Deaf people always have hearing people speaking for them.

I wasn't trying to speak for anybody.

I was just answering a question.

All I'm saying is that I see why Daphne was upset.

We're aware that you were the leader, that's why you're here.

But as reckless as your actions were, your protest has forced the school board to reconsider closing Carlton.

(Sighs) Yes.

Oh! (Laughs)

-_

But there will be some changes.

The student body will expand to include more hearing students and we agreed to 50%.

The school is not financially sustainable otherwise.

No.

The students are going to be looking up to you for your opinion.

Can we count on you for your support?

You don't blame me, do you?

No, I mean talking to that reporter. Was that wrong?

Thank you! Even Noah took Daphne's side.

Yeah. Why, doesn't it surprise you?

No. Hey, tell me.

See what?

Yeah, for the play.

You know, the one where they play star-crossed lovers.

Wow, I can't believe that you are so jealous of Noah that you would stoop to this.

No. What?

(Jazz music playing)

Hey!

Hi.

Saw you were playing, thought I'd stop by.

Club soda, please. Thanks.

You are a busy man. Did you get my texts?

I'm sorry. It sounded like you had your hands full with that whole school stuff. So how'd it turn out?

They're keeping the school open... with a few conditions.

Congratulations.

I'll pass that along to the girls.

Or you can, the next time you see them.

Ah. Which won't be for a few months... actually.

We got the tour.

(Gasps) That is great.

Oh.

You know, I do make a pretty good groupie.

Maybe I could meet you for a few days.

It'd be so good to get out of town.

I would love that, but we're not gonna have much downtime.

Either we're gonna be driving, sleeping or playing.

And I'm guessing you're going to be pretty busy

between now and when you leave.

Yeah, between rehearsal

and getting plans together.

Look,

I know I had a little bit too much the other night, but it's been awhile and I'm just trying to...

Look, Regina, it's cool.

Okay? I'll call you when I get back.

Absolutely.

Bay: They should have put yours in a tub.

This was a medium.

At least you don't have to worry about fitting into your "Romeo and Juliet" costume anymore.

That's true. I do feel bad for your mom, though.

Well, you too.

Are you sorry it's over?

Well, I'm not gonna miss all the rehearsals.

(Clears throat)

No more kissing Daphne.

Nope.

Which I'm sure she's relieved about.

It was just acting, right? You and Daphne?

I don't know.

Wait, what?

We had a connection.

I tried to ignore it and I thought that it would go away.

Oh my God.

I'm so sorry.

I've been trying to find a way to tell you this.

I think you just did.

(Breathes deeply)

Hi.

Hi. Can I talk to you for a second?

Sure.

I'll see you guys later.

Okay.

I know that this seems crazy, but we really do love each other.

But, Nikki, you're about to go off to Peru and have this amazing experience... an experience that could change your life... and I really think that you should trust that if you're meant to be, you'll find your way back to each other.

But we already did.

Nikki, Toby is a little lost right now.

Finding out about the switch is so recent for all of us.

We're still trying to figure out how we all fit in together.

I know.

So don't you think it's easy for him to want to attach himself to a future with a strong confident girl like you?

Well, I don't think that's the only reason.

He is not ready for this kind of commitment.

Just think about it.

(Knocking)

All right, all right! I'm coming.

Gina.

In bed already?

You really are getting to be an old man!

Can I come in?

Of course.

Have you been drinking?

No.

Maybe a little.

And I started thinking about you and what an idiot I was to walk away from you.

Gina, let me drive you home.

No no no no no.

Daphne and Bay do not understand the difference between a few drinks and being a drunk. I can't go home.

You're stuck with me.

Daphne and Bay know you're drinking?

I don't want to talk about that.

I don't want to talk... at all.

Okay well, why don't you sit on the couch while I put on some music?

Sounds good.

Something romantic, so we can dance. Oh.

Of course.

You should lay down and rest while I find the right music.

That's a good idea.

(Sighs)

Oh hey. Do you know where Kathryn put that caramel sauce?

(Bowl bangs)

Here you go.

Anything else you want?

Butter, eggs, my boyfriend?

Oh, that's right. You already took that.

Bay...

So congratulations, now you don't have to be in a play so you two can make out.

I don't know what you're talking about.

We broke up.

I had nothing to do with that.

Oh, please.

All that time "rehearsing," bonding over hearing aids and basketball.

Did we become friends? Yes.

But I didn't try to steal your boyfriend. I wouldn't do that.

You never wanted to be in the play in the first place, and somehow you end up with the lead opposite my boyfriend.

Kathryn made me Juliet!

And then you throw that all over so that you can be the leader of the deaf revolution.

And God forbid that I should even attempt to answer a reporter's question!

God, enough!

Don't you get tired of seeing yourself as the victim all the time?

I didn't used to feel like that until you showed up.

(Door slams)
(Knocks)

Yeah?[/i]

John? There's somebody here to see you.

Okay, can you...

Oh no.

What now?

I'll make it quick. I wanted to let you know that tomorrow morning my office will release a statement announcing my withdrawal from the race.

Wait a second, I don't understand...

The official explanation will be "a family matter."

Is everyone okay? Is this about your daughter?

Don't worry, your son isn't in the line of fire.

I wasn't...

I'm... I'm sorry.

I appreciate your concern.

Elisa's bipolar. (Sighs)

We've been managing it, but she's going through a really rough time and...

She needs me.

Yeah, of course.

Patricia, I...

I understand and I know how much this meant to you.

Anyway, you're getting off easy for round one.

I'm sure we'll see each other down the line.

We will.

Thanks for keeping my seat warm.

(Chuckles)

(Door opens)

(Closes)

Exhales)

(Crickets chirping)

Hi.

Hello... fiancée.

So I found this really sweet one bedroom. It's downtown.

It's affordably priced and they throw in a free flat screen.

Do you think that we're rushing this?

I don't want us to be doing this just because I'm going away.

I thought we were doing this 'cause we love each other.

But what if, without even meaning to, I'm, like, throwing your life off course?

Actually, you're giving it a course.

That's what I mean.

I don't want you to marry me just because I give you purpose.

Maybe you should go to college and find your path.

That sounds oddly parental. (Chuckles)

Your mom came and talked to me.

Nikki, my whole life, I have pretty much done what I've been told. You know, I'm not perfect, but for the most part I make good grades, I haven't done anything crazy to my hair...

Lately. Never been arrested.

(Chuckles)

And ever since the whole switch thing, my parents have relied on me, more than ever, to be that guy.

But you... are so brave, going after what you want even if other people don't understand it.

And it's made me want to do that too.

And what I want... is you.

* I want to love *
* with no fear. *

Now what?

(Sighs) I'm not here to yell at you.

Angelo has been trying to reach you.

He wanted me to tell you that Regina's okay.

What does that mean?

I guess she spent the night there.

At Angelo's?

Why?

I just assumed she was at Zane's.

He said that she showed up late and... had had a few.

She told me that she was dealing with it.

She probably believed it when she said it.

I guess one of us should go get her.

Maybe we should both go.

Where is she?

She's sleeping.

Can we see her?

No no, I don't think she wants to see anybody right now.

She needs to be home. I need to take care of her.

No, you don't, neither of you. I'll take care of it.

Angelo...

I'll make some calls, figure things out.

And when she's better, I'll take her back home.

Then we can all come up with a plan.

Okay.

If you want to do something, get her car back from the club.

Her purse is in the kitchen.

Is there anything I can do?

Actually there is one thing... for me.

Oh. (Car approaches)

Should I help you?

Nope, I'm fine.

Gonna be fine.

So where is this doctor's appointment?

Slight change of plans: We are meeting my doctor at the hospital.

Are you having the baby?

I've been having contractions for the past three hours...

10 minutes in-between, so it's not dire.

Bay, don't panic.

Don't run any red lights. Just get me to the hospital.

Okay?

Okay.

This day just keeps on coming.

(moans softly)

Mom?

What are you doing here?

Aren't you supposed to be in Puerto Rico?

Angelo called me.

He said you were in trouble, I came home.

(Sighs)

He shouldn't done that. I'm fine.

(Snuffles)

Where is he?

He went to get us some lunch.

(Groans) Food.

And you're obviously not fine.

It's a hangover, I'll survive.

You should go back to Puerto Rico.

Oh.

I wish you would have talked to me.

What would you have done?

Waved your magic wand

and given me my life back?

No.

You went through this once before alone.

You don't have to this time. We're all here for you.

Great, that's just what I need, an audience... my mom, my ex, my daughters and my flawless co-parents.

Welcome, everybody, to Regina's failure theater!

(Whispers) Mi Amor.

No one thinks you're a failure.

(Crying) I do.

Angelo has arranged for you to go to a clinic in Minnesota.

You'll get all the help you need, and we'll be there whenever you want us.

Rehab?

Yes.

(Door opens)

Wow.

(Door closes)

Is everything okay?

Um, I'm gonna go take a shower.

Thank you. I'm glad you called me.

I knew you were the one she needed.

(Phone vibrates)

Um, I need to go. Can you stay with her?

Of course.

I'll be back.

I know you will.

(Sighs)

(Pops)

(Cheering)

* the time is now *
* oh oh oh, we're gonna figure it out *
* it's you and me... *

Where's John?

In there.

* oh, this'll be the best year yet *
* the best year yet. *

Hey.

Hey.

Uh, your staff is kinda wondering what you're doing in here.

(Groans) Yeah well, I am trying to write an acceptance speech.

You need some help?

Yeah.

Could you write it, deliver it and take my place?

Come on.

Okay, John, what's going on?

You know, when the poll numbers started to drop, I was actually relieved.

And this win? This... I didn't win this.

It's like a forfeit.

Nope, it's still in the "W" column.

Look, I have to believe, after everything we've been through, that things work out the way they're supposed to.

I should have pushed for you.

The party wasn't buying me.

We should've done it anyway.

(Sighs)

Second-guessing isn't helpful right now, honey.

Anyway, this isn't about you or me.

It's about the people you represent.

You get to help make decisions that could change people's lives for the good.

And that's really cool.

Yeah, it's pretty cool.

Yeah, so come on.

Let's do this later and go out and celebrate with your staff.

(Sighs)

Hey! You have to listen to me.

I'm one of your constituents now.

(Chuckles) Yes, I do. Get over here.

Thank you.

Senator.

Senator? You like that?

You ready?

I'm ready.

(Music playing)

John: Hey hey hey, whoo!

(Cheering)

* this'll be the best year yet *
* the best year yet. *

(moans)

I think this one's almost over.

(Exhales)

Thanks for staying.

I know it's pretty intense.

Hey, it's easier for me than it is for you. Angelo should be here any minute.

Uh, I'm gonna get you more ice.

Is there anything else that you need?

Huh-uh.

Bay?

He's been a good dad to you, hasn't he?

I mean since he found you?

Do you think that he would be a good father?

To her?

Are you gonna keep the baby?

I can't give her up unless he signs away his rights, which he won't do.

I don't know what to do.

But I need to know that he is reliable because I can't do this on my own.

He's been trying really hard.

He's actually come through a lot lately.

The only reason he's not here right now is because he's with Regina.

She started drinking again and he took care of everything.

Okay, so... they're, like, still in each other's lives?

Yeah, uh, I know it sounds crazy, but I guess...

(Footsteps)... even after all of this, those two are...

Sorry I'm late.

How are you doing?

I'm hanging in there.

Well, I'm gonna let you two share in all of this.

Uh...

I'm gonna be in the lobby if you need anything.

You got everything?

I think so.

The train leaves at 4:00, right?

Yeah, grandma's already in the car.

* I look to you... *

Thanks.

* when I see nothing... *

Well...

I'm going to see you?

Yeah. They have assigned family days.

And until then... we can't text or email?

No.

* and I look to you... *

I'm so sorry.

For what?

I know you had to stop signing, it wasn't a choice, but I kept my distance.

I let things change between us.

And you think my drinking was your fault?

If I had noticed, been paying closer attention...

I mean, Bay noticed.

Honey, no one is responsible for my drinking except for me.

Do you understand?

I know I lied to you and I am so sorry.

I forgot, sobriety is something that I have to fight for every single day.

* so tell me *
* where to find you... *

I love you too.

Okay.

* and tell me where *
* to go. *

-_

-_

* through the winding roads *
* further than we've gone before... *

(Phone ringing)

Hi, honey.

Hey, mom, what's up?

Hey, it's your dad too. Listen, we've got some great news for you.

Looks like you got into Wash U!

It's thick. It's gotta be an acceptance.

(Hesitantly) That's great.

Um, can I give you guys a call back?

Uh, yeah.

Thanks.

Okay.

* just can't wait for all we're gonna do... *

What was that about?

Oh, nothing.

So see anything you like?

I think this one is really pretty.

(Baby crying)

Shh shh shh.

Shhh.

* through the winding roads *
* further than we've gone before *
* past the "turn back now" sign post *
* and see just how far this road goes *
* and see just how far this road goes *
* and see just how far this road goes *
* and see just how far... *

(Kathryn) Hey, honey, I...

What's wrong?

Nothing, I'm fine.

(Sighs)

Okay.

What is it?

I do not want to make this all about me and...

I feel terrible saying this to you, but...

I saw Angelo holding the baby, and singing to her.

And you and dad were the greatest parents in the world, but sometimes...

I t hurts... to think about what you missed out on.

Yeah.

And I don't want you to judge her, but Regina's drinking again.

She's going to rehab.

What?

She is?

And Noah and I broke up.

It has been an awful awful week.

Yeah.

Wow, I'm sorry to hear about Regina.

I can't even imagine what that's like.

And I'm... I'm sorry about Noah, whatever happened.

(Sniffles)

But I do know something really amazing happened today.

You got a baby sister.

(Chuckling softly)

Yeah.

Wanna go meet her?

Will you go with me?

Yeah.

(High-heeled footsteps)

Hi.

Where's Lana?

She took the baby and left.

What do you mean, left?

How could she just go?

The nurse just told me she checked out.

She told her she had a plane to catch.

So they're just gone?

Yeah.

Did... did you say anything to her?

Did she say anything to you?

No.

(Gasps)

* if I stop too long to think *

-_

* nothing good can come from that *

-_

* and if I wait too long to make *

-_

* this move *

* the one I can't take back *

-_

-_

* though I wouldn't change a thing *
* you know I... I never could pretend *

* nothing's gonna break *
* nothing's gonna break *
* us down *
* nothing's gonna break *
* us down. *
