(Male announcer) in new york city's w*r on crime, the worst criminal offenders are pursued by the detectives of the major case squad.

These are their stories.

We're a team and we're goin' places.

We're not goin' there alone.

[Coach yelling]

[Grunting]

[Coach yelling]

A lot of talk right now.

It's tough to get those voices out of our heads.

I know some of us are hearing what they're sayin'.

Thinkin' about what's gonna happen down at that courthouse.

These ivy league football players are guilty of a brutal as*ault.

(Coach bloom) our defense is solid if we stick together.

(Hoyle) and no one is getting special treatment whether they can run a ball or make a tackle not on my watch.

(Male reporter) do you expect an indictment from the grand jury today?

[Phone ringing]

Hi, carla.

No, I yeah, all right.

Bye, girl.

Traci's cool, right?

Carla! She's just nervous, all right?

Don't be mad.

Them bastards ain't gettin' away with it.

No, benjy.

Wait! We gain our ground by inches.

That's how we succeed.

Do you have any comment to your accuser?

Do you still maintain your innocence?

(Male reporter) the r*pe victim is from your community.

Do you feel a personal obligation to prosecute?

I was born in the bronx.

I grew up here.

This neighborhood is poor and proud.

We take care of each other.

And the bronx is not gonna tolerate one of our own being victimized by these arrogant sons of prmlege.

[Doorbell buzzes]

Hello?

Hello.

Traci kwon here yet?

No.

She's not answering her phone.

I asked gates to run by her place.

[Doorbell buzzes]

(Coach bloom) we protect each other.

Whatever comes at us, keep your heads up stay strong! And that, gentlemen, is how we win! Are we gonna win?

(All) yeah! Are we gonna win?

(All) yeah! We gonna win?

(All) yeah! [Cheers]

Oh no.

[Chatter]

(Hoyle) good morning, ladies, gentlemen.

Thanks for coming.

I'll take your questions, but i-i just first want to say that traci kwon's m*rder is a terrible tragedy.

And we will find out who did this.

(Male reporter) do you still expect an indictment in the newell r*pe case?

Major case.

(Hoyle) the heart of our case is the testimony of the victim.

She's not going to be intimidated into any kind of silence.

Did one of the accused football players k*ll traci kwon?

Whoever did this, they can run, but they cannot hide.

That's enough.

Thank you.

Thank you very much.

Well, well, well.

Join the party, falacci.

How'd I b*at you here?

Media gridlock.

Ada hoyle's making the most of his ten minutes.

What a prima donna.

Meet detective investigator gates.

Hoyle's boss.

Oh.

Hoyle loves the cameras, but he's a stand-up prosecutor.

You're retired nypd?

Working a second career in the d.

A.

'S office.

It's nice.

I get a car.

Gates found the body.

Upstairs.

Traci kwon was your key witness?

You familiar with the case?

Just what I read in the papers.

Traci and another stripper were performing at the newell football team party.

The other stripper alleges she's been r*ped.

Hoyle's making the entire team suspects.

Traci was late for the grand jury.

I was sent to knock on her door.

Found the poor kid lying here.

D.

Jo.

.

A.

She went down headfirst with force behind the fall.

She still has her jewelry.

But no purse.

And the apartment was ransacked.

Kind of a mixed message, huh?

Well, it's tough to tell what's gone.

She didn't have much to begin with.

How'd they get in the building?

The front door's locked.

Neighbors all heard the intercom.

The old lady in 309 never asks.

Just buzzes people up.

Rush job.

Yeah.

All the drawers are open.

(Falacci) they left cash.

Wedding fund.

Huh.

Someone didn't want traci talking to the grand jury.

Who knew she was testifying today?

Wouldn't have been hard to figure out.

Even for football players?

Gonna need the names of all those accused, by the way.

I can't talk about the case.

You're turning this into a turf w*r?

It's a m*rder investigation.

Of a witness in a bronx ada's case.

Hoyle finds out I'm talking to you, I'm on the street.

Let me walk you out.

Listen.

I know you're under orders.

But come on.

We're both on the job here.

You like that girl, right?

You gonna let her k*ller get a head start?

You see her friend here?

Just give me a name.

Nothing says that my partner and I didn't get it here on our own.

Traci called this morning at 8:00.

I told her testifying was no big deal.

Is that why she was k*lled?

Well, if you give us the name of the players who att*cked you, we'll find out.

I can't.

Mr.

Hoyle told me not to talk to nypd.

Just to his office.

Carla, your friend was thrown down a flight of stairs.

It could've been anyone on that team.

They stick up for each other.

They lie.

Well, look, if you know who did this, you better tell us because your girlfriend could be next.

If the cowards even oh, god, I'll k*ll 'em! I swear to god I'll k*ll them.

Traci though, she was alone.

No roommate.

Vulnerable.

No friends looking out for her.

That's not true.

Look, traci was having trouble at work.

I told her benjy would pick her up.

She said she didn't want to be any trouble.

Pick her up where?

Where she danced?

Traci worked as a cocktail waitress.

She tried performing one night.

Didn't last two minutes.

How'd she end up stripping at the newell football party?

I have no idea.

We don't sanction off-premises work of any kind.

Well, we understand traci may have been harassed here.

News to me.

We take care of our girls here.

This is not that kind of place.

Oh?

Is it the kind of place that serves underage kids?

'Cause if I asked those two sitting over there for id, are they gonna show me their out of state library card?

Maybe.

Maybe?

Listen.

Last week, there was an incident.

What kind of an incident?

Some college kids came in.

They were bothering traci.

They wouldn't let up.

She tried to get away.

Her skirt got ripped.

College kids.

From newell?

This is a dominican neighborhood.

Those rich white brats come down from the hill, no mistake.

We're gonna want every single name of those rich white brats, okay?

I'll get my bookkeeper.

She'll pull up the credit card receipts.

Good.

You guys want to wait, anything you want's on the house.

No.

Yeah, just give us a call.

So traci kwon doesn't have an enemy in the world except for the 90 players in the newell football team.

Tough to cross that padded line.

No one at the college is talking.

You said she has a wedding fund.

You find the fiance?

Fort lauderdale.

He's on his way here.

That's the third call I've made to the bronx d.

A.

'S office.

They're still saying, "we'll get back to you.

" I've worked with hoyle.

He's territorial.

Or maybe his case isn't as strong as he's been selling it to the press.

Might be more than that.

Bronx d.

A.

'S retiring this year.

Seat's up for grabs.

Hoyle's hoping to win.

Hmm.

A dominican neighborhood.

And a dominican girl cries foul on some white boys.

Playing to local prejudice, huh?

The bronx is burning.

Part two.

And hoyle's pouring on the gas.

[Blackberry beeps]

Let's give him till the end of the day.

Then I'll make a call.

Vicuna club just pulled the credit receipt on the guy who was manhandling traci.

What's a wall street broker doing visiting a strip club in the bronx?

The vicuna club?

Never heard of it.

Was your credit card stolen, mr.

Danes?

Not that I'm aware of.

Well, your card was used to pay for a $500 champagne table at a strip club in the bronx.

[Mr.

Danes laughs]

That's amusing.

If I go to the bronx, it's for the play-offs.

And my driver keeps the limo running.

But thank you for alerting me.

I'll have my assistant call the company.

Can I help you with something, detective?

Where'd you go college?

London school of economics.

You?

Looks like there was a pennant hanging here.

I didn't know that lse had pennants.

(Falacci) this photo looks lonesome.

Like there were others missing.

Hey, listen, my friend.

I don't kneed an mba to know that you're covering for somebody.

A football player at newell?

Okay.

It's my stepson from my second marriage.

Sean mcclure.

I gave him a spare card to use in case of emergencies.

[Whistle blows]

(Coach) oh, nice.

Nice execution! That d.

A.

, He goes after one of us, he goes after all of us.

Still doesn't explain why you were hounding traci.

No, we were talking to her.

I bought a bottle of champagne.

We just wanted her to tell the truth.

There was no r*pe.

Is that why you ripped her skirt?

Now that was an accident.

Look, I'm sorry that girl's dead, but she was a liar.

She could've sent any one of us to prison for years.

Why aren't you guys investigating that?

Where were you monday morning?

Where we are every morning.

Practice.

Can anybody verify that?

Yeah.

I can.

Along with 88 of their teammates.

You're done here, gentlemen.

I have a practice to run.

You want to talk to any of my players, call their lawyers.

Telling them to lawyer up.

What a way to build character.

You gonna walk off my field or am I gonna have to toss you off?

We'll be in touch, coach.

Yo, yo, yo, timbo.

Timmy timmy, man, how come you didn't call the lawyer my dad recommended?

Well, your attorney wanted a $5,000 retainer fee.

So get it from your parents.

Yeah or whoever.

Look, we're in deep here.

I mean, you think this thing's all gonna go away?

Look, I'm not doing time.

Not for you, not for anybody.

Now call the lawyer.

Call the lawyer.

Come on.

What do they want?

Don't worry about it, ma.

I got it.

Well, what do they want you to do?

Want me to talk to an attorney.

Those boys do not have your back, tim.

Don't go out of your way to protect them.

I got it.

'S up man?

Look, I'm here voluntarily.

This r*pe case is bogus.

Those girls.

They were lame.

I wouldn't do them if you paid me.

Well, why did you hire them in the first place?

'Cause they were cheap.

Look, we should've just gone to scores.

Detective.

Wait there.

This kid'll open up if I ask him about the r*pe case.

You have to talk to hoyle first.

I thought you were calling him.

We just spoke.

He's holding onto his files.

But he's agreed to walk you two through some details.

Cut the kid loose.

Detectives.

Obviously I want the nypd to find traci's k*ller.

Then give us access to your files.

It's not that simple.

Look.

All due respect, a girl is dead here.

Carla id'd three players who r*ped her.

Until I get an indictment, I cannot give you my files.

You interview my suspects, you'll tip them off to what we know.

Well, if your case is solid, it'll hold up.

No, I'm not worried about my case.

I'm worried about carla sanchez.

I already know you talked to her.

She's scared.

I do not want to lose her.

[Knocking at door]

Gene, I need you to didn't I see you out front of traci's apartment at the press conference?

Detectives, this is my wife beth.

One of our press liaisons.

It's nice to meet you.

Gene.

When you have a minute.

You and your wife made it to traci's apartment awfully fast.

When was the last time you spoke to traci?

The day before at the courthouse.

I prepped her on the, uh, swearing in process.

So what was traci testifying to?

Traci saw carla dragged up the stairs.

Carla sanchez was not the only one who was r*ped.

Traci was too.

I thought traci was just a witness?

She refused to press charges on her own as*ault.

Now she's gone, those thugs will get away with that.

Thugs?

We're not the press, mr.

Hoyle.

You don't have to sell it to us.

These boys have been told that they are better than everyone their whole lives.

We are being vilified in the press as if newell's ball game or someone's pro career was more important than what happened to those girls.

So that's it, mr.

Hoyle.

No names.

No numbers.

Okay, we understand.

After the indictment, then we get everything.

You have my word.

Hoyle's more interested in making a name for himself than he is in solving traci's m*rder.

Look, there's more to life than just one case.

Higher ups have an agenda.

You want 30 years in?

Deal with it.

Hey, people told me you were a hothead.

Guys like hoyle you'd eat for breakfast.

What happened?

After ten years on staten island, you learn to pick your battles.

So according to hoyle, traci was assaulted too.

Yeah.

And we're not getting anything else until he has his indictment.

All right, still no final autopsy results on traci.

I'll tell rodgers about traci's r*pe.

But tough to confirm two weeks after the as*ault.

Until then, drag in the entire newell football team.

One by one.

You know, we may not have to.

There was something that hoyle said about the player's pro careers being threatened.

That's gonna narrow the field.

How many players have nfl potential?

Two or three.

Sean mcclure.

He's a good quarterback.

But the running back, kid's a star.

These your trophies, mr.

Pardue?

My dad played running back too.

I played for newell before I went pro.

'85 Was my first season with the jets and last.

I remember you.

You took a b*llet in the back.

We were in a bar.

Curtis was protecting a woman who was being harassed.

I tried to stop him.

But my husband always has to do the right thing.

He was sh*t by the woman's boyfriend.

(Curtis) you said this is about the girl who was k*lled, detectives?

I don't know how we can help you.

Tim.

So you were at the practice monday morning with the other players?

Yeah.

Look, no one on our team is a k*ller or a r*pist.

(Falacci) you sound awfully sure about that.

You were at the party that night.

My son is being targeted because we can't afford a fancy lawyer.

The d.

A.

Thinks he'll cut a deal and testify against his teammates.

All he's ever wanted to do is tell the truth.

Then now would be a good time.

We just won homecoming.

We got some beers and went back to the house.

But the whole thing was a disaster.

The girls, they didn't want to be there.

And, uh, the hispanic one, she was all messed up.

Messed up?

What do you mean by that?

She was drunk and she had bruises on her legs.

Okay, look, a few of the guys, they were being rude.

They were making comments like, "where are the white girls?

" Okay, so the party turned sour.

Then what happened?

The asian girl was outside and and the other one who was wasted, she started yelling back.

And then she just stumbled out.

Nothin' happened.

This the story you told hoyle?

You think hoyle wants to hear tim's story?

He doesn't care about the truth.

Yeah.

I gave him dna.

My photo for a lineup.

And then I volunteered to take a lie detector test and they say no.

They never took his statement.

They never took his statement?

Hoyle lectures us about children of prmlege and that's who he goes after?

Who knows.

But hoyle must be going after him for a reason, right?

He's sounding more credible than hoyle.

Maybe.

Kid's not gonna tell the whole story in front of mom and pop though.

In that family, they got everything to lose if tim doesn't become pro.

I don't make him as a k*ller.

Well, we got his dna.

If rodgers makes a match on traci's body, we'll get him into interrogation.

(Rodgers) cause of death, fractured skull.

Intracranial hemorrhaging.

Anything on the tox screen?

Nope.

And nothing under her nails.

And no sexual as*ault.

Wait a second, rodgers.

The r*pe happened two weeks ago.

Couldn't the signs have disappeared?

Logan, she wasn't r*ped.

Not vaginally.

Not two weeks ago.

Not ever.

Hymen is intact.

As far as I can tell, traci was a virgin.

(Ross) traci's a virgin?

That doesn't rule out a sexual as*ault.

(Falacci) she wasn't pressing charges.

Hoyle's trying to bolster his case postmortem.

Unless traci or carla lied.

Maybe we should be asking hoyle these questions here.

Here?

Falacci, what yeah, I know.

Staten island.

No.

Not staten island.

Rules of the game.

You don't drag a senior ada into the station house.

You do if he's stonewalling.

Which is what happens when people throw stones.

I'll talk to hoyle.

When?

There's traci's fiance.

Maybe you'll get lucky and she told him the truth.

We were saving ourselves for marriage.

Her night job must have been hard for you two.

Traci had the lord's word in her heart.

She knew he would understand.

We needed money for the wedding.

Do you think that's why she took the job dancing at the football party?

I only found out afterwards.

She called me crying from the school clinic.

Carla's boyfriend works at the school so traci knew where to take her.

Did traci tell you what happened to her that night?

She said the guys were drunk and crude.

That carla was assaulted.

What about traci?

Was she okay?

Yeah.

She's smart.

She ran outside before things got out of hand.

Okay.

When was the last time you spoke to traci?

The night before she d*ed.

We prayed together over the phone.

She asked, "if you take an oath, even if it's not on the bible, are you swearing to god?

" (Ross) so, gene, traci kwon.

You told my detectives she'd been r*ped, right?

But the autopsy's conclusive.

She's a virgin.

Doesn't mean she wasn't assaulted.

There are things about this case that I can't talk about.

Not even to you.

Carla told me that they got separated.

That traci had been r*ped too.

Carla told you.

Not traci.

This case, gene, some people think you're moving to trial too quickly.

These kids, they have money, social connections, their parents, their school.

What does carla have?

What did traci have?

I get it.

Which is why we should be working in tandem.

Who knows?

We might find something makes your case a lock.

I will level with you here.

There is information in those files that if misinterpreted by the wrong people will hurt carla.

No one's gonna see these files but me and my detectives.

Just a few questions about carla sanchez.

I could get in trouble for talking to you.

But what those players are going through, it's not right.

Okay.

So you want to help the football team, right?

Yeah.

You treated carla sanchez that night?

Did what I could.

She was drunk.

Yeah.

Well, she had a friend who said she needed medical treatment.

So there had to be somethin' a little more to it.

She had a few bruises on her arms and legs, but they weren't fresh.

She didn't tell you she'd been r*ped?

Only after her boyfriend showed up.

He was angry, jealous.

If you ask me, she was trying to get sympathy.

And you told all this to hoyle.

The d.

A.

'S office didn't want to hear from me.

They had their own medical expert to examine her.

Look, this is all off the record, okay?

Sure.

Sure thing.

Wonder what team she's rooting for.

[Blackberry beeps]

Oh, hoyle's files finally showed up.

Love to have a look at what his medical expert concluded.

You go ahead.

I'll talk to carla's boyfriend.

Get his side.

I'm just tellin' you what people were saying.

Well, I'm telling you whoever told you that is lying.

So you didn't have a problem with carla stripping?

No, man.

It's just a job.

She's a good looking girl, benjy.

No, actually, she's beautiful.

Mm.

I would have a problem with that.

Yeah, well, that's you.

You're old school.

Still.

All those snotty rich kids stickin' bills in her g-string and doing god knows what else.

She like that kind of thing?

Yo, shut up, man.

That's my fiance you're talkin' about.

You're getting married.

Yeah.

I'm getting married.

Huh.

On a janitor's salary, huh?

Well, maybe that's why she was doing those parties.

Screw you, man.

She's quittin' that, all right?

We don't ever have to work ever again.

This mop is done.

The lawyer said we got a slam dunk.

Carla and benjy hired an attorney?

They're hoping to parlay her ordeal into a big pay day.

Well, good luck.

I mean, I knew this case was weak, but there was no lineup.

Carla only looked at photos of team players.

She picked out sean mcclure and brad barrett.

She didn't even say one of her assailants was black until she picked out tim pardue.

What about the r*pe kit?

There was semen from two different men.

Neither of whom matched the dna from any of the players on the newell team.

Complications.

Hoyle's out on a limb.

Explains why he was reluctant to hand all this over.

Mm-hmm.

Oh, here's one other thing.

This is carla's statement, okay?

Carla says she was dragged up the stairs into a room on the right.

Here's traci's statement.

It's the same story word for word.

Mm-hmm.

And this is the police diagram of the player's house.

There are no rooms up the stairs to the right.

All the rooms are to the left.

Traci didn't see a thing.

She was just trying to vouch for her friend.

Traci was an evangelical.

Maybe she had a crisis of conscience about lying under oath.

Well, maybe carla and benjy had a crisis too.

About losing their cml suit.

Traci wasn't gonna testify?

Where did you get that from?

(Falacci) you didn't know?

See, the thing is, you were on the phone with traci that morning.

And an hour later, traci was found dead.

Could be you went over there in person.

What?

I was at home on the phone with my mother.

You can check.

Oh, okay.

So it was benjy who went over to her.

That makes more sense.

No.

No way.

Well, benjy left your place at 8:00 and he didn't punch in until almost 10:00.

Gives him plenty of time to push traci down the stairs.

No.

Benjy had no idea.

Okay.

Okay, traci called me the night before.

Said she wasn't gonna back me on the stand.

It freaked me out.

But there's no way I told benjy.

So what if we hired a lawyer?

Those guys r*ped carla.

And they gonna pay and the school too.

Yeah, but it's really gonna mess up your pay day if traci backs down on her story.

What are you talkin' about, man?

What are you talkin' about?

Stop messin' with me.

Hey, sit down! Hey, sit down! Sit down! Benjy's next door.

He's in real trouble here, carla.

Has has no alibi, he has a motive, and a temper.

That's why I didn't tell him.

He would've gone crazy.

Oh, just like he would've gone crazy if he found out you had sex with another man.

We know you had sex with two different men that day, carla.

Now assuming one of them was benjy, who was the other?

One of the players who r*ped me.

I guess hoyle didn't tell you yet.

'Cause that dna didn't match any of the players on that team.

All right, I'll tell you the truth.

Please don't tell benjy.

You gotta swear to me benjy don't find out.

Go on.

It was omar.

He's my ex.

Benjy didn't know I was still seeing him.

But I went to omar to tell him that I wanted out, you know.

And he just he just went off on me.

He was the one who r*ped you.

And you didn't file a report?

No.

[Crying]

No, because I don't want benjy to find out.

You realized benjy is going to see the bruises, get suspicious, so you pinned the r*pe on the newell football team.

Those guys treated us like garbage.

I was upset.

I had a couple of drinks.

I lost my balance.

But did they help me?

No.

No, those guys, they said I was an ugly w*tback who should go home to mexico.

I said, "I'm dominican.

" They laughed.

I took my money and I ran out of there.

Where was traci during this?

Was waiting outside.

She wasn't ready to dance.

I was shaking so bad.

Traci took me to the clinic.

She took care of me.

And you asked her to lie for you.

Benjy wouldn't have believed me without her.

I didn't want to call the cops.

I didn't.

But benjy made me.

Okay.

When exactly did traci tell you she wasn't gonna lie on the stand?

It was the night before.

I called mr.

Hoyle at home.

You called hoyle?

And said what to him?

That traci was changing her story.

And what did he say to you?

He said not to worry about it.

He would take care of traci.

I'd expect perps and real estate agents to lie to me, not ada's.

Back up.

All we know is carla told hoyle that traci had an issue with her testimony.

Yes.

And then ten hours later, traci's m*rder*d.

He was already out on a ledge.

Hoyle didn't want his case blowing up.

So he kills his own witness.

I don't know whether he's an idiot for believing that carla was actually r*ped by those boys in the first place or if he's just an opportunist who thinks that that press coverage is more important than telling the truth.

Hold on, falacci.

What?

Are you telling me to back down?

I'm telling you to work another angle! I got one.

Walter gates.

He's been with the d.

A.

'S office for years and he might just know how far hoyle would go.

Great.

I'm being double-teamed.

Look, you were right about hoyle's case.

You may be right here.

You play this guy like a perp, he'll shut down.

It's a question of finesse, falacci.

(Sports announcer) we're down to the second last group of players thank you.

Wasn't I right about the rib eye?

Yeah.

But you didn't ask me to lunch because you wanted red meat, hmm?

No, gene, I need you to help me understand something.

Carla sanchez told us she called you the night before the m*rder to tell you traci was backing off her testimony.

Yes, she did.

And you didn't feel that was worth mentioning to us?

Come on, dan.

We've both had to talk witnesses back from the edge after they've been intimidated.

So you spoke to traci?

Yeah.

That night.

I calmed her down.

Told her I'd see her at the courthouse.

I had no reason to believe she wouldn't testify.

See, an outsider might think that traci's death was fortuitous.

[Laughs]

And now you ask me where I was when traci was pushed down the stairs?

Yeah.

Something like that.

I was conducting interviews.

Come on.

One of the players knew we were closing the net.

They threatened traci.

Go to her apartment that morning to finish the job.

Yeah, but, see, gene, we don't have anything that puts a football player on the scene.

And they're all alibiing their teammates.

They're lying for each other.

Come on.

You know me.

You think I'd pursue this, I'm not positive they're guilty?

I think, gene, sometimes you're inside a case, you don't see all the angles.

Forget the coffee.

We'll take the check.

So hoyle's trying to fork some political hay with this case.

Doesn't mean those boys aren't guilty.

Well, I've seen the evidence.

Your boss wants to make this case stick no matter what.

He wants justice for those girls.

Must've been a real blow when hoyle found out traci was gonna testify she didn't see anything.

He thought somebody on the team had gotten to her.

He was concerned.

Concerned enough to get rid of an uncooperative witness?

Am I hearing what I think I'm hearing?

She's suggesting hoyle k*lled traci?

Our captain's checking on his alibi right now.

You people in major case are a piece of work.

Next you'll be asking me.

You're making hoyle a suspect, you're all wrong.

Well, if not him and not you, who's left?

His wife, beth?

Who wanted this case anyway?

Hoyle or his wife?

Beth was all over the grand jury testimony.

Who was asking what, when?

She was the one who panicked when traci was running late.

Who asked you to check on traci?

That woman doesn't ask, she orders.

She order you in person?

Called me from her cell.

I assumed she was passing on a message from hoyle.

You're telling me hoyle didn't m*rder traci, his wife did.

Hoyle was in interviews all morning long.

Turns out that beth left the courthouse at 8:15, didn't return for an hour.

We pulled her cell phone records.

We pinpointed a call she made to gates at 8:50, three blocks away from traci's apartment.

So the motive is her political ambition, not his.

She's a thwarted kingmaker.

Gets engaged in law school.

Dumps the guy after he fails the bar exam for the second time.

Trades up.

Marries an assemblyman.

Divorces him after he's arrested in a public men's room.

Then beth meets hoyle, who, by the way, dumps his starter wife.

He's got some charisma.

He just needs a kick-start.

Along comes this case.

He gets launched.

Until traci remembers her christian conscience.

Beth panics, pushes her out of the way.

This puzzle that we're all trying to figure out, beth is the one piece that fits.

We're not gonna get an ada or his wife to come in without a warrant.

Let's make hoyle a peace offering.

We'll tell him we're picking up tim pardue.

And just in case the press is there, we want to make sure his office shares credit for the arrest.

I'm telling you, my boy is innocent.

He didn't r*pe that girl.

How many times do I have to tell you that?

Mom, this isn't about that.

It's a search warrant.

Search warrant?

For what?

They think I k*lled traci kwon.

That's impossible.

Whoever k*lled traci, made it look like a robbery.

Took her purse.

You can give us what you took from the apartment or we can search ourselves.

And you need the d.

A.

For that?

Traci was a witness in our case.

My son didn't k*ll anybody.

I was at practice all morning.

Right.

When was that again?

From 8:00 till 10:00.

I got 100 witnesses.

I'm sure you do.

I will not let you do this.

Hold on.

I just want to hear his side of this.

Trying to get a fix on the time line, that's all.

When was traci due in court?

When she didn't show.

And that's why you called mr.

Gates.

Which one of you did that?

I did.

My husband was in interviews.

And what time was that?

You haven't checked his cell?

Actually, we checked yours.

You called gates on your cell at 8:50.

Why didn't you just use the office phone in the courthouse?

Because, obviously you know, I wasn't in the courthouse.

I was concerned about traci.

I went over to check in on her.

(Falacci) why'd you go over there?

You were worried she'd change her mind?

Witnesses get nervous.

I wanted to reassure her.

I got over there and she was dead on the landing.

You just assumed she'd be nervous.

Your husband already told us traci wasn't going to testify.

He didn't tell you that?

Traci wasn't going to testify?

What's she saying?

You lied to me.

Oh my god.

You said she was going to bury my boy.

(Beth) they served the warrant.

Let's go.

Let them do their search.

Hold on.

No one's going anywhere.

Mrs.

Pardue, what did she say to you?

That night before the grand jury, she came over.

"As a friend," she said.

She told me traci was going to testify the next morning and that would be the end of tim.

That those boys with the big sh*t lawyers, they were gonna get off.

And this was our last chance for tim to get in front.

Beth, what were you thinking?

Tim is guilty of r*pe.

I couldn't let him get away with that.

(Falacci) what happened after beth came over, mrs.

Pardue?

I begged him.

I begged him to make a deal to save himself.

But he refused.

He's loyal.

Ah, so loyal, the next morning, he went over to traci's and he k*lled her.

No.

He did not k*ll anyone.

You're his mother.

What else are you don't you dare! (Logan) whoa, whoa, whoa! Hold it, hold it.

Come here.

Calm down.

All right.

Calm down.

Calm down.

Now why should we believe you?

You would do anything to save your son, wouldn't you?

You lying bitch.

You made me believe we didn't have a chance.

That my son was going to go to prison for the rest of his life for a crime he didn't commit.

My son is not a r*pist.

He's not a m*rder*r.

[Crying]

How do you know that?

He didn't do it.

He didn't do anything.

Because you did.

You k*lled traci to protect your son, didn't you, mrs.

Pardue?

That's crazy.

Mama, tell them it's not true.

Tell them it's not true.

Look at your son.

He's got his whole life ahead of him.

He doesn't have a record as of yet.

I think you know where I'm going.

Okay, fellas.

I'm placing your son under arrest.

No! No! It's all right.

It's all right.

Back off.

Back off.

Back off.

It was me.

What?

Grace.

I believed she was gonna cr*pple my boy.

I couldn't let it happen.

I went over to the apartment to talk to her.

She wouldn't let me in.

So I just waited out in the hall for her.

And when she came out, she was standing at the top of the stairs.

And?

She never even got a chance to tell the truth.

[Crying]

Grace.

I'm sorry, curtis.

I just couldn't watch it happen again.

Sorry, curtis.

So sorry.

I did what any cop would do.

I tricked a suspect into trying to make him confess.

I didn't know she was going to go over there and commit m*rder.

Well, that's what happened.

I wanted to see justice done.

I wanted to see a r*pist confess.

Tim pardue is not a r*pist.

Carla made the whole thing up.

This case is over.

No, no, no.

The case is not over.

Gene not now, beth! I am sorry, detectives.

I didn't know.

Don't tell us you're sorry.

Tell them.
