01x05 - Death Is Coming

Post by bunniefuu »

[door opens]

You're up early.

Yeah. Trying to get us a head start,
but it's playing hard to get.

- You okay?
- Yeah, I'm fine. Why wouldn't I be?

Don't worry about the skull. We've already
got a head start on Kipps' crew.

We'll be in and out of the cemetery
before they even finish their cornflakes.

Juice?

What if it meant the mirror?

What?

The skull. Right? It said death is coming.
What if the mirror is death?

Then I say bring it on.

- Nothing we can't handle together.
- [door opens]

- I'll go back to bed then, shall I?
- I meant all of us.

There's no time for that.
You can grab one en route to the archives.

I thought we were going to the cemetery?

[Lockwood] We are. Come on.

I need you to go down to the archives

and find out everything you can
about the mirror and Bickerstaff.

Today is make or break.

Only 'cause you turned this job
into a pissing contest.

Not still in a mood about that, are you?

Did you forget what we went through
to save this place?

If I tell my parents I've lost another job
because you and Kipps...

- We won't lose.
- Won't we?

How do you know? Are you psychic?

You're telling me I don't have time
to drink a coffee.

- Let alone assess the crime scene.
- Okay. Enough.

George, come with us. Suss out the scene,
then go to the archives, work your magic.

And, Lockwood.

Make an effort.

Give him two quid for a coffee.

[siren wailing]

[Lockwood] Oh, sh*t.

There goes our edge.

[Kipps] Afternoon, Tony.

Piss off, Kipps. We're busy.

Kat and I were just wondering,
when you lose this case

and your little mates
have to crawl under their rocks,

what are you gonna do by yourself
in that big, empty house of yours?

[Kat] Breaks my heart.

[Kipps] Hmm.

- Just ignore them.
- We'll show them.

But we'll get more when we come...

How's the head today, Ms. Joplin?

It's fine, just a bump.
Nothing compared with this mess.

We were on the brink
of a major discovery with that mirror.

I told you we needed more than one child
on that door, and regular checks...

Mr. Kipps thinks
that this is an inside job.

It's unusual for relic men
to swoop in so fast.

The little sh*t on guard must have tipped
them off that this was something special.

The little sh*t who got knocked out?

[laughs] This is why we have insurance.

And now DEPRAC's suspended
all activity in the cemetery,

we shall be raking in the compensation.

It's not about the money.
It's a unique artifact.

Will you can it, Pam?

It's just a stupid relic.

It's really not.

We'll just take a look inside.

[radio chatter]

[Saunders] Now, what else
can I assist you with?

[Lockwood] Kipps is wrong.

Night Watch know better than to mess
with dangerous relics and relic men.

Given how valuable this is, there had
to have been at least two of them.

[Lockwood] Agreed.

How do we think they got in here
without being seen?

Well, the main gates were well guarded,
and DEPRAC confirm that door was locked.

[George] What's this?

- [Lockwood] It's a Tendy's badge.
- [Lucy] An agent did this?

Agents in league with relic men?

Or agents on their own, knowing
everyone will think it's relic men.

- Now this is getting interesting.
- [George] Glad I came?

Ecstatic. We've got our edge back.
Now let's make it count.

[muffled] George, we need you
back at the archives now.

[rumbling]

[Lockwood] George?

[wind gusting]

- George.
- Huh?

It's time to go. Bobby Vernon
will have been on this since dawn.

You do know Bobby Vernon
can just push a button on his database?

Yeah, but where's the fun in that?

[Lucy] What's up with him?

[Lockwood] He's got the hump because
he'd rather be where the action is,

but he's our researcher,
and that's what I need him to do.

[echoing] He'll be fine... he'll be fine...

[Lucy] So, what now?

Role-play. Let's imagine
we're a couple of relic men.

How are we getting in and out
of this cemetery without being seen?

Probably over the wall, by the canal.

The water makes it safer,
and it's well away from the main gate,

so if I had to knock anyone out,
no one would hear them scream.

Alarming how quickly
you got into character.

Come on, before anyone else
has the same idea.

[bird squawking]

[ominous music playing]

- [yelps]
- [dramatic sting]

George, what are you doing?
You're supposed to be at the archive.

Look. In the water.

[Lockwood] I know him.

[theme music playing]

[echoing whisper]

[radio chatter]

[siren blares]

[Lockwood] Danny Clough was one
of the older agents when I was starting.

He helped me out.

Got me out of trouble a few times.

He was one of those people
who had no idea how cool he was.

How did he go from that to...

a relic man?

I'm sorry.

[Lockwood] Let's keep this to ourselves.
We need to find out who his partner was.

We dredged the whole stretch. No mirror.

[Lockwood] Any idea who the body is?

Working on it. Going off the tattoos,
definitely a relic man.

Who do you think did that to him?
His eyes, I mean?

No one.

We found ocular tissue
under his fingernails.

And injury suggests it's his own.

What he saw in that mirror
made him do that to himself.

You need to make a breakthrough.
If that thing gets into the wrong hands...

[Kipps] We won't let you down.

Fittes will go wide. They'll round up
every relic man until they find something.

We need to move faster. Smarter.

- George.
- Archives, I know. What about you two?

No time to explain.
I'll fill you in later.

Meet you at the house at midnight
for an epic breakfast.

[Lucy] Are you sure you're all right?
About Danny?

- [Lockwood] I hardly knew him.
- It could still stir stuff up.

I know someone who can help us.
An old friend, works on the river.

Come on.

[siren blaring]

- One day pass, please.
- We're full.

Oh, um...

Well, look, I won't take up much room.

- It's for a case. I'm doing research.
- Not today, you're not.

- Please. This is important.
- Then you should have come earlier.

Oh, forget it.

[siren blaring in distance]

Mr. Karim.

I'd ask what brings you here,
but I think I can guess. Bickerstaff?

Yeah, but I was just leaving.
They're full.

Well, you know I'm on the board?
I'm not averse to pulling a string or two.

- Our little secret. Come on. [chuckles]
- Really? You're a lifesaver.

- What are you here for?
- Comfort.

This place calms me down.

[George] Me too.

I hope they still work this patch.
It's been a while.

Who? Relic men? Don't you think they'll
be in hiding, with Fittes all over town?

[Lockwood] Probably.
This one's a bit different, though.

What? Not an evil, thieving bastard, then?

Hey, we badly need her help,
so just... try and be nice, yeah?

When am I not nice?

- [scoffs gently]
- Wait.

Her?

- [echoing groan]
- [gasps]

[moaning]

Did you... did you hear that?

[baby crying]

[groaning]

[gurgling]

[echoing cries]

[fussing]

Who left you out here?

[babbling]

- [screeches]
- [Lucy] Oh!

[woman screaming]

[gasps]

[ghost screaming]

[Lockwood] Run!

Cold Maiden!

Lockwood!

[ghost screeching]

[yelps]

[ghost screeching]

[gasps]

What happened?

[girl] I did.

Evening, Locky.

Who's the latest slapper?

'Scuse me?

This is my associate, Lucy Carlyle.

Lucy, meet Florence Bonnard.
AKA Flo Bones.

The best relic hunter on the Thames.

[Flo] Cheers for distracting her, Locky.
Took me a while to locate her remains.

Always happy to help you out, Flo.

We could've been dead by the time you got
off your arse. No way you didn't hear us.

No point trying to outrun a Cold Maiden.
Any idiot knows that.

Gotta find the source or you're screwed.

- Especially if you're a bit...
- What?

- Wet.
- Uh... who was she?

Elisabeth Creevey.

Victorian baby farmer.

Single mums paid her to have their kids
adopted into good homes,

but she kept the cash, drowned the kids.

These relics have bad vibes
I can charge a fortune for.

- Pay my way for months.
- You're sick.

We all make our living
dealing with the dead.

Only difference is
you're caught in the cogs.

Slaves to a system run by the rich.

- Oh God!
- At least I'm free.

Bullshit.

Well, we make things safe.
And relic men are evil.

- And relic girls...
- Girl, actually.

- I'm the only one. My own boss.
- It's nothing to be proud of.

- Nothing to be ashamed of neither.
- [gasps]

[Flo] Look, love, this river's filled
with the ghosts

of men who've been murdering
since this city was made.

Almost all the girl ghosts
are their victims.

The only reason these are worth anything
is 'cause she was so rare.

Oh, wow, a female serial k*ller.

Whoo! Aspirational. Why don't you stick it
on a T-shirt? Jesus, can we just go?

The world that made women
give their babies away, that's the evil.

And it never ends.

Hold on, hold on. Flo.

- I know a buyer.
- Lockwood!

[Lockwood] It's the Foundling Museum.

They'll pay more than the black market,
and it's a good home. A safe one.

And get arrested for my trouble?
No, thanks.

Not if you're anonymous
and I'm the intermediary.

What a nice boy you are, Locky.

[Lockwood sighs]

Helps to be born minted, of course.

And in return, you tell us
what you know about Danny Clough.

What's happened to Danny?

[clock ticking]

[sound of flies buzzing]

[buzzing grows louder]

- [Joplin] Mr. Karim?
- [gasps]

[Joplin] It's past curfew. We should go.

Get what you needed?

- I've made a start, thanks to you.
- I was glad to be of help.

Any fun plans for the evening?

Absolutely. I was thinking
I could clean the oven.

- Again.
- [laughs]

Well, I only live around the corner
if you'd like to get something to eat?

You must be starving.

- Unless your friends are expecting you?
- Uh...

No. I'd... I'd love to.

Great.

[Joplin talking quietly]

[door opens]

Poor Cloughy. He asked me out once.
Been drinking, obviously.

It's not "obviously."

Yes, obviously. He was always drinking.
That's how they would have got to him.

- Who?
- Parasites. Scum.

Why didn't Tendy's help him?
He must've worked for them for years.

Tendy's doesn't give a sh*t.

He was on his way out.
Talent fading. Expendable.

We need to find Danny's partner.
Whoever it was who left him for dead.

That'll be Jack Carver.

But you do not wanna find him. Trust me.

[Lockwood] We have to.

This is important, Flo. Please.

Leave a message on that board,
and he might come and find you.

It'll have to be
the right kind of message, though.

One he can't ignore.

"We know about the mirror."

And our address? That is a su1c1de note!

We need to make sure he shows up.
He's our only hope.

Tell me about their network.
How do they move their goods?

They're in business with Julius Winkman.

Antiques dealer in Bermondsey
who works with his wife.

- I'm warning you, do not poke that nest.
- What do you mean?

Let me put it more plainly, darling.
If Carver doesn't k*ll you, they will.

Thanks, Flo. Here.

Something to remember Danny by.
The way he was.

I'm always surprised
when you turn up to see me, Locky.

I thought you'd be dead by now.

[Lockwood sighs]

[chopping and sizzling]

I see you're a big fan of Thoth.
He's a god of the dead, right?

You're the first guest I've had
who's known his name.

- It's written on the base.
- Yeah, but you pronounced it correctly.

He's the god of writing, science,
and wisdom. And the dead.

Right. But much less so than, say, Rashnu.

The Persian righteous judge of the dead.

The angel who stands on the bridge
between our world and the next,

sending souls to the House of Lies
or the House of Song.

Well, now you're just showing off.

You wouldn't believe how nice it feels to
have someone to show off to, Ms. Joplin.

Call me Pamela.

- [uncorks bottle]
- [George] So what were you studying today?

My specialist subject,
the early years of the Problem.

Well, that's my subject too.

- Oh!
- Do you have any theories?

Any mistakes? Cover-ups?

Do you think anyone had any clue
what they were doing?

It's not about conspiracy theories
or alternate history for me.

It's... it's mainly nostalgia.

But you weren't around before the Problem.

- The correct response! No, I wasn't.
- [laughs]

But when I was young,
it was all still relatively new.

So your parents remembered
how things were, I mean?

Well, they tried to hang on to that world,
which was obviously impossible.

It must've been kind of amazing for them,

realizing you had these skills
that could keep them safe.

Oh, I never had any talent.

Uh... None at all?

Not the slightest bit.

I would have loved to have experienced
what you have with your friends.

But it spurred me on to learn more.

Pamela.

When we looked into that mirror,
did you see something?

- Did you?
- [faint crackling sound]

Well, not really. It was so quick. But...

I felt like...

- [faint rumbling]
- I can't describe it, but...

like I wanted to see more.

- Do you feel that too?
- Yes, of course.

[faint hissing]

But I think I've always felt that..

- [rumbling]
- [faint snarling]

[clock chimes once]

Listen, I should probably head home now,
in case anyone notices I'm not there.

Unlikely, but you never know.

- [clock chimes once]
- [dog barking]

Shouldn't we get a cab home?

- It's such a lovely evening for a stroll.
- Said no one ever.

- So, how did you meet Flo?
- Can't remember. Ages ago.

- She always been like that?
- Yeah. Bless her.

[distant siren blares]

She cares about you, doesn't she?

Yeah, she's a worrier, that's all.

Forget about it. We don't know how long
it will be until Carver gets that message.

We need to move fast.

- I did say we should get a cab.
- We're not headed back yet, though.

It's almost midnight.
George will wait up.

George will be delighted
when we bring the mirror.

No, not... not Winkman's?

You heard what Barnes said.

That thing is lethal. Who knows
whose hands it could end up in tomorrow?

Plus, it's easier to break in
and steal things at night.

And it's on our way.

She said they'd k*ll us.

You heard her.

Yeah, but Flo's a worrier.

I'm not worried. Are you?

- [breathing unsteadily]
- [dog barking]

[train passing]

[Lucy] We'll never get in there.
Let's come back first thing.

- You can pretend to be a customer...
- Let's go down the side.

[door rattles]

Ah. That's more like it.

[mechanisms ticking irregularly]

[Lucy] I don't like this.

[sound of horse neighing]

- [men yelling]
- [blades clashing]

[Lockwood] Can you hear the mirror?

There's too many sounds. Like...
Like the airways are jammed with signals.

[child crying]

[Lockwood] From all this.

- [woman wailing]
- [man croaking]

[wind howling]

[distorted groans]

[man cries out]

- [laughter]
- [child's voice]

[faint voices]

They're relics.

Still got psychic charge.

Bad history hanging about.

Come on.

Let's get further in.

See if you can hear it.

[irregular ticking continues]

- Wait a minute. Wait.
- [creaking]

Is that it?

No.

No, that's something living. We should go.

- [creaking]
- Or hide.

You're right.

- [whirring]
- It sounds mechanical.

There's no footsteps.

If anyone comes, hide.

Lockwood.

[whirring]

[gasps]

[rhythmic whirring]

[Lockwood] Hello.

- [machine chimes]
- [mechanical voice] Uh... Danger, danger.

[chuckles]

[breathing shakily]

I'm here because I've lost something.

Do you think
you could help me find it, please?

It's a mirror.

A very special mirror.

It makes a buzzing sound.

Like a bee.

[chuckles]

Have you heard it round here?

Do you think you could show me?

Didn't I tell you
not to talk to strangers?

Ah, you must be...

- [grunts]
- [gasps]

Leopold, go and get your father.

[sighs]

[irregular ticking speeding up]

[faint sound of flies buzzing]

[sighs]

[rumbling]

[gasps]

[sighs]

[muffled breathing]

- [leather creaking]
- [groans softly]

[gasps]

[thump]

Oh...

[sighs]

[gasps]

[chain rattles]

[faint buzzing]

[sizzling]

[high-pitched creaking]

[Winkman] Which agency are you from?

I don't recognize the uniform.

I'm not an agent.

I'm a burglar. You should call the police.

[Winkman] You had a rapier.

And no criminal would be so foolish
as to try to burglarize my premises.

[Lockwood] Fair enough.

I'm undercover.

From Fittes.

Call DEPRAC and report me.

[Winkman] Fittes have already been
by today. During opening hours.

Civilized callers.

Unlike yourself.

I don't think I need trouble DEPRAC.

Come on now, Mr. Winkman.
There's no need for that.

I'm sure we can come
to some form of arrangement.

I have access
to some extremely valuable antiques.

I'm guessing that you're after
the same item that Fittes was. Am I right?

So, tell me...

who you are,

and who told you to come here.

Or shall I draw some pretty pictures
on your pretty little face?

If you do that, you'll have to k*ll me.

You wouldn't get away
with k*lling an agent.

[Lockwood grunts]

[Winkman] Maybe.

Yeah.

But then again...

a certain type of young man

has always been susceptible
to a certain kind of... end.

Introspective. Educated.

Burdened by the business of death.

If your wrists were slashed
with your own Kn*fe,

would anyone think twice?

Yeah, they would.

My friends would.

Okay, then. [chuckles]
Well, let's start with that, then.

Who else knows that you're here?

No one.

No one? [chuckles]

Look... [sighs]

[breathing shakily] It's true, I'm sorry.

I swear it's true.

I always work alone.
Go on, ask me another question.

Okay! [laughs]

[sighs heavily]

- Bam, bam, bam, bam!
- [machine powering up]

- [power humming]
- Bam!

- [frequency increasing]
- Dum, dum, dum...

Da!

Who else knows...

[yells]

...that you are here?

- [power crackling]
- [gasping]

[power increasing]

[faint electrical buzzing]

- [soft, rasping breathing]
- [echoing laughter]

[gasps]

[faint whispering]

[croaking]

[buzzing]

[pulse of energy]

[flies buzzing loudly]

[whispers] Oh, come on.

Leopold, is it?

I know it's in there.

The mirror.

Is it keeping you awake?

You're talented.

I'm a listener too.

Is that your toy?

Can I listen to it?

[pulse of energy]

[child crying]

- [slap]
- [child screams]

[echoing cries]

[pulse of energy]

You're hurting.

My friend is really hurting.

Do you know where he is?

Do you think you could
help me find him, Leopold?

Please.

- What is it?
- [gasps]

[Winkman] Did she tell you anything?

[groans]

I didn't give her the chance.
But she's a nosy one. A listener.

She knows where it is.

Your colleague, I presume?

Never seen her before in my life.

Leopold, go back to bed and stay there.

[Mrs. Winkman] Let him watch.
If he won't do as he's told,

he might as well learn
how the world works.

[Lockwood] Leave her alone.

She's just a trainee.
She doesn't know anything.

Oh, so she's more than a colleague, then.

Is she a friend?

- Is she family?
- She's no one. Let her go.

Ohh!

Well, a su1c1de pact it is, then.

It's perfect.

[clattering]

Fine. Fine. I'll tell you everything.

You're right. No one will be surprised
if I turn up dead.

They've all been waiting for it.

So put me out of my misery, by all means,
but just let her go.

She's got everything to live for,

and she will not breathe a word of this,
I swear.

Winkman, listen to me.
Look, I'm... I'm serious. I mean it.

Do what you want with me. I don't care.
No tricks. No lies.

Do we have a deal?

I'll k*ll her last,
so you don't have to watch.

[Mrs. Winkman] You're getting soft,
Julius, my love.

- [Winkman] You could be right.
- [grunts]

Leopold, move!

- [grunts]
- [both yelling]

Take one step and I throw it.

- Do not test me!
- No, Julius!

- [groans]
- [Winkman] I'm coming for you, boy.

I'm gonna gut you. I'm gonna mince you.

And I'm gonna tear your skin off!

You'd better run, boy!

I'm gonna count to ten!

One!

Two!

[screams]

[Winkman's scream fading slowly]

[low, mechanical humming]

[spoon clinking]

[flies buzzing]

[buzzing fades]

- [roars]
- [gasps]

[panting]

[tapping]

[cackling]

[dog barking]

[Lockwood groans] Oh...

What the hell was that?

Flo was right. Total psychos.

Not them. You. You were practically
begging him to k*ll you.

- I prefer to call it a noble sacrifice.
- Oh, don't give me that sh*t.

If I hadn't come to, you'd be dead.

That's... that's not true. I had a plan.

Oh. Oh, okay, right.
What... what was that, then?

You know, I would've had a plan,
if it had come to it.

In the moment, I always do.

- What is going on with you?
- [sighs]

You know you can talk to me, Lockwood.

Yeah... yeah.

Yeah, I know.

- So?
- [gasps]

[sighs]

God's sake. I don't even know
why I bother. Come on. Let's just go.

I'm never going back there.
They can keep the mirror.

- [Lockwood] You saw where it was?
- [Lucy] Locked up.

Probably move it,
now their cover's been blown.

We can't let Winkman and Carver
get away with this.

Oh sh*t.

What?

Carver. He'll have got your note
and George is home alone.

Now we get a cab.

[front door opens]

[crow caws]

- [door closes]
- You said midnight!

- You didn't wait up, did you?
- Of course. Where's the mirror?

- What the hell have you been doing?
- I'll tell you later.

[loud banging at door]

Who's that?

[thumping]

It's Carver.

- Who's Carver?
- Danny's partner.

[gasps]

[George] Oh my God.

- [wheezing]
- Lucy, call an ambulance now.

Jesus. Who did this to you?

- Bone glass.
- What did he say?

Bone glass? What does that...
What does that mean?

Is that the mirror?

Seven. Not one.

[George] Seven what?

Did you look into it?

What did you see?

[wheezing]

[rasping] Terrible things.

[sighs]

[whispering] Come with me.

Where? Where... where to?

- Huh? What did you hear?
- [Lucy] He...

He wants us to go with him.

[Lockwood] Lucy.

He's dead.

[theme music playing]
