Since the Doctor first appeared
on the scene,

the life of Mickey Smith
has "wheelie bin" a bit rubbish.

cos he is no longer an idiot.

Doctor Who Confidential goes
exclusively backstage

to take an in-depth look at this
man's journey from zero to hero.

He's really embracing the sort
of hero thing.

He does become one of the team.

It's nine, nine thirty,
and we're just about to start.

Mickey is brought in by the troops
and meets Ricky for the first time.

Russell told me early on
that I was playing the two parts.

I was looking forward to it. And when
I read it, I thought it was great.

Having scenes with yourself...
I was immediately practising.

"Ra, ra, ra..." "Ba, ba, ba..."
You know, trying to get it right.

I was well excited about that.

What the hell are you doing?

What are you doing there?

What am I doing here?

What am I doing THERE?

I can explain.

This is our first visit
to the marvellous parallel world.

We didn't invent it.
It's a good old classic.

It is the convention that you will
take your characters and get
a different perspective on them.

Ricky looks very different
from Mickey

and in episode six, you discover
they're not so far apart.

I don't know how much
of Mickey's story arc

Russell had in mind when he wrote
episode one of series one.

He's an alien, he's a thing.

In Rose, in the first episode,
he was a gibbering fool, really.

It's Mickey saves the day today.
The Cyberman comes to life,

we think it's just a suit,

but we press a button
that activates it and we turn around

and it's coming after us.

Up until this point, I'm still
the Mickey you love or hate,

depending on your view,
but from that moment on,

he's sort of in control.

He's really a changed person
and I guess the hero that he becomes.

And action!

Not bad work.

It's moving!

You said it was dead! A robot stood
still is a good robot. Wait a minute.

Hey, Cyberman. Over here.

Come on, you brainless lump of metal.

Come and have a go.

I'm kind of thinking now,
maybe the Doctor always knew

that Mickey had that in him anyway.

Little by little, he gets on board

and finds that, um...
"Who'd have thought it?"

But actually he has a flair
for it himself.

'Get out! Get out!'

You'd blow up a planet
just to get a lift?

What kind of rubbish were they?

Who the hell are you?

Mickey!

Faster!

Mickey, 'ello!

I'm not having that. I'm not having
you just give up now, no way.

I think at the end of season one

when Mickey helps Rose get back
to the Doctor to fight the Daleks,

it's him saying,
"If you want to go and die

"to save this guy,
because I love you so much,

"I have no choice
but to help you do it."

Keep going! Give it some more!

Rose!

There's that lovely moment when
he first asks to join the TARDIS.

Can I come?

Cos I'm not the tin dog.
And I wanna see what's out there.

And the look on Rose's face
is brilliant.

Bless her, and we're all like this.
She doesn't want him there.

Rose and the Doctor is an exclusive
relationship and Rose is...

very tetchy about
letting people into that.

Rose, is that OK?
No, great. Why not?

She wants to be the Doctor's
companion.

She wants to be the girl who saves
the world and understands humanity

and suddenly someone else is getting
in on the game and it's annoying.

There's a sense that the Doctor
sees him as a disciple.

At the end of episode three,
even though Rose is saying no,

the Doctor says, "No, come on,
let's go, your time has come."

Now she'll have to divide her time
and show Mickey a bit of loving

and all she wants is the Doctor!
She's such a minx, Rose.

Brilliant, I got a spaceship
on my first go!

I am not going back in there.

Ho, ho, mate! The missus and the ex -
every man's nightmare.

Mickey Smith, meet the universe.

Are you looking at me?

He gets a couple of trips
in the TARDIS and then it's like
he meets his destiny.

Ricky seeing Mickey's death...
it's really strangely horrific.

Come on!

HE SCREAMS

Fall.

Of course he decides that

not only will he make a difference,
but that he'll stay there

and continue the fight
when the Doctor and Rose leave
and that's what he does.

It balances out cos this world
lost its Ricky.

But there's me. But you can't stay.

'I think she finds her heart
breaking'

and it's a moment of realisation

when she realises how much she loves
Mickey. It's a real wake-up call.

She's desperately sad
and it's a touching moment

and it's quite heartbreaking.

I'm here in a van,

at scene of episode six.

And it's Mickey's last, last scene.

And it's very sad

but also very happy cos Mickey's
a new man and he's changed.

And action!

Doctor Who has definitely been one
of the greatest things I've done.

It's the most amazing group of people
that have put together

the most amazing show.

We've tried our hardest to make it
special and you couldn't ask
to be on a better show, really.

OK, so Andrew, that's a good
position for you.

Just make yourself comfortable,
and Noel, bear in mind where we are

so you may need to lean forward
that much... Not...

OK, for rehearsal then.

I know it's not easy with my face
looking exactly like Ricky

but I'm a different man,
I'm not replacing him.

But we can remember him.
I'm fighting in his name.

With all them Cyber factories out
there, think there's one in Paris?

Yeah.

There's nothing wrong with a van.

I wanna save the universe
with a big yellow truck.

Life for Mickey Smith,
once the Doctor and Rose
go on the parallel world,

Mickey Smith is going around Europe,

around the world and he's gonna fight
these things till they're all gone.

He's happy about doing it
because he's a changed man.
