- What?

- ♪ Come over here

♪ The Cat in the Hat
is about to appear ♪

♪ He's whizzing over
to whisk you away ♪

♪ On a fabulous journey
today ♪

- He's coming!
- ♪ Now he's arrived

♪ In the Thinga-ma-jigger,
the thing that he drives ♪

♪ He's a cat
and he's oodles of fun ♪

♪ With his hairy helpers,
Thing Two and Thing One ♪

- Whoo-hoo!



- Whoa!



[laughter]



- Whoa!
- Wahoo!

- ♪ It's the Cat in the Hat

♪ All of our adventures
start like that ♪

♪ Wherever you're going,
wherever you're at ♪

♪ The Cat in the Hat
knows a lot about... ♪

- ♪ He knows a lot about,
he knows a lot about ♪

all: ♪ He knows a lot
about that ♪

[laughter]

- Look at my new train set,
Fish.

Can you think of anything
better to do all day?

- I'm all aboard for that idea.

- Hi, Nick.

Want to play explorers?

- Sorry, Sally, not when
I've got my new train set.

And look how these magnets
stick to each other.

Pretty cool, right?

- Yeah.

But not as cool

as exploring
with a telescope.

- Now it's time for the engine.

Huh?

That's weird.

The cars are moving away.

- Maybe they don't want to play
trains either.

[laughs]

- [laughs]

Very funny.

[gasps]

It happened again!

- I'll take a closer look with
my telescope.

Hey.

What's making it do that?

- Well, they are magnets.

- Let me look again.

Hmm.

Huh?

[gasps]
Cat!

- Having train troubles?

- Nick's train cars keep
pushing away from his engine.

- And they pull toward
my telescope.

- That scope just went "clink."

Is it metal, do you think?

- It must be.

That's why the train magnet
sticks to it.

- So magnets stick to
some things that are metal,

and they also
stick to each other.

But if all the cars
have magnets,

why do they
push away from the engine

instead of sticking to it?

- Hmm.

We might find out

on the This-a-way,
That-a-way Stream.

It goes right through
the Magnetic Fields.

- If it'll help me put my train
together, I'm in.

- Oh, goody!

I've always wanted
to explore there.

- Did you say "explore"?

Then I'm in!

- Did you say "stream"?

Then I'm in!

- Hurray![laughs]

Your father will not mind
at all if you do.

- Dad!

Can we go
to the Magnetic Fields

with the Cat in the Hat

to find out how to
put my train together?

- The Magnetic Fields.
Hmm.

Well, I don't think I could
pull you away from that.

Have fun.

- We can go!
We can go!

- I know!
I know!

To the Thinga-ma-jigger!

Buckle up.

[horn honks]

[playful music]

[whirs, clicks]

Flip the Jigger-ma-whizzer!

[boing]

[exciting music]



Isn't this fun?

both: Whoo-hoo!

- ♪ Here we go, go, go,
go on an adventure ♪

♪ The Thinga-ma-jigger
is up and away ♪

both: ♪ Go, go, go,
go on an adventure ♪

♪ We're flying
with the Cat in the Hat today ♪

- Down below, a magnetic
adventure's in store

with an invisible pushes
and pulls to explore.

- Are we here, Cat?

Is this it?

- Yes!

Welcome to the Magnetic Fields,

home of the This-a-way,
That-a-way Stream.

- All I spy with my fishy eye

are red and blue rocks.

Where's the This-a-way,
That-a-way Stream?

- Hmm.

It could be this-a-way,

or it could be that-a-way.

There's only one way
to find out.

- By exploring?

- That's the way!

- Yay!

Huh?

Whoa!

My telescope

is being pulled
toward this rock.

[grunting]

- [gasps]

So the rock must be...

both: A magnet!

- Ah, silly me.

I forgot to tell you,

in the Magnetic Fields,

all the rocks are magnets.

- Hmm.

[train car clatters]

Are you sure, Cat?

My train car
pushed away from this rock.

- Just like it was pushed away
from the engine.

- But magnets are supposed to
pull together, right?

- Maybe it's some kind of
magnetic mystery.

- Hmm.
[gasps]

Or maybe sometimes magnets pull

and sometimes they push away.

- I'm not sure
I'm following you, Nick.

- The question is,
how do we know

when they're going to pull
or push?

- Or fall!

- Gotcha!

That's why we came

to the This-a-way,
That-a-way Stream.

- If only we could find it.

- While you were pacing,

I've been exploring
with my telescope.

It's that-a-way!

- Yay, Sally!

- All aboard!

To explore the This-a-way,
That-a-way Stream.

- But how is a canoe ride
gonna tell me

why my train isn't working?

- Huh.

This canoe is red and blue,

just like all the rocks
around here.

I wonder if that means...

Yep.

It's a magnet.

- Then maybe this canoe trip

will tell us
what we need to know.

- What a beautiful stream.

I don't know whether to look
this-a-way or that-a-way.

- I'd say look that way,

because we're heading right
towards that rock.

We need to go the other way.

- Fish is right.

We're paddling
towards the rock.

We need to paddle
away from it.

- We are paddling away from it.

- [grunting]

- The canoe is being pulled to
the rock anyway.

- Of course!

The rock is a magnet.

It's pulling us because
the canoe's a magnet too.

- We've gotta turn this canoe
away from that rock!

[all grunting]

- Hey!

We got pushed
away from the rock.

- But why would
one end of the canoe

push away from a rock

and one end pull toward it?

What's different?

- Maybe the question is
"what's the same?"

- [gasps]

The color!

When we spun
the blue end of the canoe

toward the blue side
of the rock,

it pushed us away.

- Blue pushes blue away.

- Speaking of way, we're now
facing the wrong way.

- Huh?
Why, this won't work.

Okay, everyone, about face.

- And now we're headed straight
towards another rock!

- If blue pushes blue away,

maybe red pushes red away.

We've got to spin the canoe!

[all grunting]

[all cheering]

- So when the colored sides of
magnets are the same,

they push away from each other.

And when they're different,
they pull toward each other.

I think.

- We're gonna find out.

- Not again!

- What's the trick, Nick?

- The red end of the canoe
is coming up

to the red side of the rock.

So it should push us away.

No paddling, anyone.

- [whimpers]

- Yay!
We figured it out!

- [sighs]

And from now on,
we'll be completely safe.

- You're absolutely right,

as long as we can see
what's up ahead.

Uh-oh.

We can't see what's up ahead!

- Wait.
There's a turn in the river!

What are we gonna do?

- If you can't see ahead
if a rock's red or blue,

it's the time to rely on Thing
One and Thing Two.

[whistles]

[engine revs, both yowl]

[both screaming gleefully]

[both chattering indistinctly]

- We need you to let us know
which color rock is up ahead.

Just wave one of those flags.

[both chattering indistinctly]

[motor whirring]

[both chattering indistinctly]

- There he is.

But I can't see which flag.

- Here, Nick.
Try my telescope.

- Hmm.
Okay.

The rock around
the next bend is blue.

- At a time like this,
there's only one thing to do.

- Spin the canoe!

Blue pushes blue away.

- Okay.
About face.

- Red flag alert!

We need the red end
in front now.

- We've got to spin the canoe!

Yay!

Red pushes red away.

[all cheer]

- [gasps]

I see a dock ahead.

Let's paddle to it.

- I'll lead that-a-way.

- This is a strange thing
for a Fish to say, but...

"Land, sweet land."

- How we spun that canoe!

I had fun, didn't you?

- Yeah.

But there's one thing
I don't get.

- What is it, Nick?

- My train magnets
aren't red or blue.

Hmm.

Let's see.

This end pulls towards blue,

but if I spin it
like the canoe...

It pushes away.

- So it's not the color
that makes the difference.

- It's the way
the magnets are facing.

Now I know how to
make my train set work!

When I tried connecting
my train car to my engine,

I only tried it one way,

like this.

So this end of the magnet
must be the same

as the magnet on the engine.

But what I didn't do is...

- Spin the canoe!

[laughs]

I mean, spin the train car.

- Right.

So this end of the magnet

must be different

from the magnet
on the engine.

- They stick!
You were right!

- I gotta get a closer
look at this.

Huh?

Oops.

[laughs]

Pardon me.

I forgot I had these.

[laughter]

- Introducing

the most magical magician:

the Cat in the Hat!

- ♪ Ta-da!

For my first trick,

I'll make these two train cars

pull together and stick.

♪ Ta-da!

- But that's not a trick, Cat.

- It's just magnets holding
those train cars together.

- Then let's see if you can
make the magnets stick to this.

- Why do magnets stick to
some things and not to others?

- Good question.

♪ Magnets are magical

♪ This much is true

♪ They'll stick to some objects
without using glue ♪

♪ Playing and testing
is really the best thing ♪

♪ For finding out
just what a magnet can do ♪

- These magnetic letters
stick to the fridge.

I can feel the pull.

- What about this?

It's metal.
- Nope.

They don't stick
to all metal things.

Let's see what else
they stick to.

- ♪ Magnets are magical,
this much is true ♪

♪ They don't stick to glass
or a doll or your shoe ♪

♪ Playing and testing
is really the best thing ♪

♪ For finding out
just what a magnet can do ♪

- It sticks to my plane.

- But not to my stuffed dog.

- Good to go?

- Good to go.

- You can do it, Nick!

- Whoa.
[whimpers]

Whoa.
[grunts]

[laughs]

- That was quite a fall.

- You okay?

- Sure.
But I don't get it.

When I had the training wheels
on, it was easy to ride.

But they've been off
for three days,

and I keep falling over.

- You just have to
find your balance.

Watch.

- She found her balance.

So how do I find mine?

- Whoo-hoo!

Balance is a talent

that you can learn.

- Cat, boy,
do I need your help.

- Nick can't find his balance.

- I had it, but then I lost it.

- Ah, yes.

It's easy to lose your balance.

[screams]

But if you work at it,
you can find it again.

- I can never find my balance

when I'm trying
to ride my bike.

How do I find it and keep it?

- Hmm.

Ooh!
I know!

You have to ask
Even and Steven,

the expert balancers
of Balance Point.

They know all about balance.

- We've gotta go there.

- Your father will not mind
at all if you do.

- Dad!

Can we go to Balance Point

with the Cat in the Hat
to find my balance

so I can ride my bike
without training wheels?

- Do you want me to help you
like we did yesterday?

- Thanks, Dad, but Even and
Steven are experts.

Can we go, please?

- Well, if you know an expert,
sure.

But you can always
fall back on me.

[laughs]

- We can go!
We can go!

- I know!I know!

To the Thinga-ma-jigger!

Buckle up!

[horn honks]

[playful music]

[whirs, clicks]

Flip the Jigger-ma-whizzer!

[boing]

Isn't this fun?

♪ We're flying
with the Cat in the Hat today ♪

- Look around Balance Point,
and you surely will see

many things that are balanced
or trying to be.

[both laugh]

- Wow, Nick.

Looks like this is the place
to find your balance.

- Where are Even and Steven?

- Just follow the trail
that leads to their house

on the tippy-top
of Balance Point.

- [grunting]

We have to
get through this gate

to get to Even and Steven,

but it's locked.

- This sign might be
instructions.

I think we have to
balance on the seesaw

to open the gate.

- Well, there's only one way
to find out.

See if the seesaw
holds the key.

- Easy peasy.

Let's go!

- [grunts]
- Oh, no.

We're not balanced.

- What are we going to do?

- Ah, well, you don't have to
get it on the first try.

- Maybe if I get on
really slowly,

I can keep you there.

- Whoa!
Nope.

You must be
a lot heavier than me.

- And if I'm a lot heavier,

I'm always going to be
on the bottom.

- Cat, I think this is
impossible.

We're never going to
work it out.

- When you must do a job
that you think can't be done,

that's a time to call out
for Thing Two and Thing One.

[whistles]

[both chattering indistinctly]

both: ♪ Ta-da!

- Nick and Sally
need to find a way

to keep that seesaw
in balance.

Can you please help?

- Hmm.
- Ooh.

[both chattering indistinctly]

both: I don't know.

- You're giving up already?

both: Yeah.

- Hmm.

Things, can you two
stand side-by-side?

[both chattering indistinctly]

- Hmm.

Sally, I've got an idea.

Okay, Things,
get on the seesaw.

[both chattering indistinctly]

- I don't get
this idea of Nick's.

They're just seesawing.

- Stop, Things.

Sally, take that end
of the seesaw.

And now, very carefully,
let go

on three, two, one.

- Wow!

They're balancing.

- You did it!

You did it!

How did you do it?

- The Things
are exactly the same.

both: Huh?
What?

- I mean, you both
weigh the same.

But I'm heavier than Sally.

- If one of you were heavier,
then that end would go down.

- Ooh!
Aha!

- So?

- So...

both sides
have to be the same weight

to be balanced.

[triumphant fanfare,
bell dings]

Even and Steven!

- Nick, it looks like

we've got to balance
a book on our head.

- Weird, but
how hard could it be?

- Pretty hard
without any books.

- I always say,

it's a great idea
to have books with you

wherever you go.

Hmm.

That's too big.

Too small.

Too small.

Too small.

Ah!

Just right!

- Oops.

- And again,

you don't have to
get it on the first try.

Or even the second.

- Easy peasy.

See, Nick?

Whoops!

I think there was more of
the book on one side.

- Hmm.

- I have to move it
so it's the same weight

on both sides, like this.

Got it.
Whoops!

Hmm.

That didn't work either.

- Hmm.

Maybe once it feels balanced,

you just have to
keep your head straight.

- Now I got it.

- Don't look at me.

Just look straight
and keep your head still.

- Careful.

Slowly.

Got it.

- Me too.

I think.

Ooh.

It helps
if you keep your arms out.

- You did it again!

You did it again!

How did you do it again?

- The book doesn't
fall off your head

if it's the same weight
on both sides.

You can sort of feel
where it is

by playing around with it.

- But you shouldn't
move your head,

or the book's gonna fall off.

- And then it won't be
balanced?

- It's like the seesaw.

If you make the weight the same
on both sides,

then both sides will stay up.

- And the books will stay on
our heads.

- So let me get this straight.

If I make things the same on
both sides...

- You'll be balanced.

- Which means
you won't fall over.

- You kids always amaze me.

[bell dings,
triumphant fanfare]

- Now do we get to meet Even
and Steven?

- Let's go see!
Let's go see!

- So I guess we have to balance
on this log now.

- [grunts]
Whoa.

- Sally, remember
to keep your arms out.

- Right.

We did it!

- Yeah!

[knocks on door]

Even!

- Steven!

[gasps]
Hey!

That's us!

- It's a mirror.

Where are Even and Steven?

- Must be right there.

- But that's just us.

- Well, how about that.

You must be Even

and Steven.

- But they know all about
balance.

- And so do we!

- Huh.
I guess we do.

- Cat, did you know there
wasn't an Even or a Steven?

- Me?

Well, I wouldn't know
about that.

But I do know that you know
lots about balancing now.

- But can I do it on my bike?

- Well, knowing and doing
aren't exactly the same.

They're related like cousins
who have different names.

If you practice with patience
and fun like a game,

you'll be doing and knowing,
one and the same.

- I'm going to try.

- Back to the Thinga-ma-jigger!

- Okay, Nick.

Are you ready?

- I feel the same
on both sides,

and I'm keeping
my head straight.

Okay.

There.

I feel balanced.

- Come on, Nick.

both: You can do it.

- Whoa.

Whoa.

Whoa!

Whoa!
[grunts]

- Oh, no!

- When I move my feet
up and down,

I'm not the same on both sides.

- The pedals are tricky.

- Hmm.
[gasps]

Maybe if I use my legs
like I use my arms,

- I can't hear!

What's going on?

- He's got an idea!

- Oh, yeah!
- Come on, Nick!

- You've got this!
- Yes!

- Yeah, you go! Go!
- Yay, Nick! Ha-ha!

- It worked!

[triumphant fanfare]

- You did it!
You did it!

You did it just now!
[laughs]

And now that you've done it,
Nick, may I ask how?

- I just kept my head straight
and my legs out,

not my arms this time.

- So you're the same
on both sides.

- I'll try to figure out
the pedal part tomorrow.

- There's always
a little bit more you can do.

As you practice and play,
you'll get better, it's true.

If you try, try again
and again, you will see,

you are finally
just where you want to be.

[laughs]
