Hey, is this thing on? Ha ha.
* Hey, sid
what do you say?
What you want to learn today? *
* I want to know
Why things happen
and how and I want to
Know everything now
oh, yeah
How does this thing work?
Why does that stuff change?
How does that do what it just
did?
Hmm
what's up with the sky?
You think I could fly?
The world is spinning
and I want to know why
I got a lot of questions
and big ideas
I'm sid the science kid *
[captioning made possible by

Ladies and gentlemen, make
way for me!
Hey, I am sid.
Welcome to my room. Ha ha!
* It's gonna be a great day
for me
Yeah, yeah
doodly boo doo doo *
Wah-cha!
Uh...
[Sniffing]
ew! I smell something kind of
Not so good.
[Sniff]
ooh. Smells like a diaper.
Sid! Let's get a move on.
Breakfast is almost ready.
Ok, mom.
It's my baby brother zeke's
diaper, and pee-yew! It's not a
Good smell. Hey, wait a minute.
I smelled zeke's diaper before
he came into my room and now he
Is all the way in the kitchen
down the hall with mom.
Huh.
Well, I can still smell him.
Ew! What's the big idea with
smells? If zeke is in the
Kitchen, why can I still smell
his...diaper?
[Echoing] diaper, diaper?
Sid, breakfast time!
Woo! Breakfast time!
All right! Breakfast time!
Woo-hoo! Screech!
Hey there, dad.
Hey, sid. Ska-plaa! I made
dad's famous pancakes for you.
Hey, thanks, dad. Cool.
You got it.
Hi there, mom.
Hello, sid.
Hi, zeke.
Yech. Mom. Mom, mom, mom.
Come over here. Um,
do you notice a funny smell
Coming from zeke?
Hmm. Zeke needs a diaper
change. I was going to do it in
A second unless, of course,
your dad wants to change zeke.
Oh, dirty diaper. I am on
it. All right, come here,
Little zeke.
Thank you, mort. Your dad is
an excellent diaper changer.
Thank you. All right, zeke.
Come on, let's get you smelling
nice. Whoo!
So here's the strange thing
about zeke's diaper smell. I
Could smell it in my room even
when you guys were down the
Hall. So how does his diaper
smell do that?
Wow! That's a great question
for the question box. You know,
Zeke's diaper isn't the only
thing that you can smell from
Far away.
Really?
Sure. Ok, close your eyes.
Ok.
Are they closed?
Um, yeah.
Ok. Tell me what you smell.
Ok.
[Sniffs]
ooh, dad's famous pancakes.
Right. Now keep your eyes
closed.
Ok.
Now tell me can you still
smell the pancakes even when
They're all the way over here?
Hmm.
[Sniffs]
yeah. Yeah, I can.
They still smell yummy.
Hey, so smells must move around
somehow. Hmm. I wonder how.
After breakfast, why don't
you investigate more at school.
Yeah. It's a great idea,
mom. I will.
* I love my mom
uh-huh
My mom is cool
uh-huh
But now it's time
for having fun at school
Yeah! *
* I'm looking for my friends
I'm looking for you
there's gabriela
Watch what I can do
la la whoo!
La la whoo!
Oh, yeah!
Wow
I'm looking for my friends
I'm looking for you
hey, there's gerald
Yeah, check out my moves
I'm a rock star!
Cool!
I'm looking for my friends
I'm looking for you
Hey, there's may
may I show you how I groove?
La la la la
ha ha ha! Hey!
We're looking for our friends
we're looking for you
Hey, there's sid *
did you hear the one about
The kid who wanted to know
everything about everything?
* That's you!
[Laughter]
we're looking for our friends
And look what we found
we found each other!
Friends! *
I'm sid, roving reporter with
Today's survey. The question:
have you ever smelled something
That was far away?
Beep beep!
Vroom!
Hey, maybe you can think
about things that you've
Smelled, too. Let's go get some
answers.
Hi, may.
Hello.
Have you ever smelled
something that was far away?
Um...yes, I have. We have
flowers in our garden and when
Our kitchen window is open, I
can smell them all the way
Inside the house.
They're delightful.
It sounds great. Thanks, may.
You're welcome.
Hey, gerald! Gerald, I have
a survey question.
Oh, ok.
Have you ever smelled
something that was far away?
Hmm. Oh, yeah. Uh, blueberry
pie.
Oh, ok.
My aunt peggy made a
blueberry pie and I could smell
It all the way across the
kitchen.
Very nice. Thank you, gerald.
No sweat.
Hey, gabriela!
Hi.
Hi. Listen, I have a survey
question. Have you ever smelled
Something that was far away?
Uh, yup. When my uncle roy
comes over, he takes off his
Shoes, and he has smelly socks.
Yuck!
Yuck is right. Well, thank
you, gabriela.
You're welcome.
And now for the results of
my survey of stuff you can
Smell far away. May says she
can smell flowers from her
Garden. Gerald says he can
smell blueberry pie. And
Gabriela says she can smell her
uncle roy's socks. Yuck. Hey,
Maybe there's something you've
smelled from far away, too. And
There you have it. I am sid,
roving reporter and smell
Expert.
Everybody, rug time.
That's teacher susie.
* It's rug time, come on in
rug time, take a seat
Rug time
we're ready
Everybody move your feet
rug time
Teacher susie
good times on the way
Rug time, come on in
we've got a lot to learn today *
Rrr! Zoom!
Ok, pilot gerald, come over
here and land.
[Sputtering]
running out of fuel.
[Sputtering]
ahhh!
[Laughter]
so how's everyone doing
Today?
Well, we were talking about
smelling things that are
Far away.
Yeah. This morning a yucky
smell filled up my room. The
Smell came from my brother zeke.
Ah, a yucky smell from your
baby brother. I get it. You
Were smelling the scent of your
brother's diaper.
Could the wind blow the
diaper smell? Was it windy in
Your house, sid?
Um, nope.
Gabriela, you're on the
right track. Smells do travel
Through the air. Let's see
here. Here we go. I have a
Picture I want to show you
guys. Ok, see?
Cool!
Here's a flower and here's
the wonderful smell of the
Flower floating through the
air. The smells are actually
Teeny tiny things called
molecules, and here they are
Traveling in the air and
landing inside your nose.
[Sniffing]
I'm smelling things, but I
Can't see the molecules in the
air.
Good observation, may. We
can't see molecules with just
Our eyes. We have to use our
noses to smell molecules. And
That's our sense of smell.
Ahh!
So that's how we smell. Wow.
Hey, scientists, anyone want
to use your nose to investigate
Your sense of smell?
We do!
Well, then let's go to the
super fab lab.
Yay!
Super fab lab!
Investigate, explore,
discover!
Ok, scientists, it's time
for the scent investigation.
Yeah!
Here are canisters and
each one has a different food
In it and each food has its own
special scent.
And we get to smell them?
You do. After you smell
what's in a canister--
No looking. Just smelling--
you can try to figure out
What scent you smelled.
Then draw a picture of what
you think it is
In your journal. When you're
done smelling all the
Canisters, we can look inside
them to see what they really
Are.
[Sniff]
I just smelled a molecule.
Woo-hoo!
Mmm! I smell something.
Oh, I smell something yummy!
You're a scientist. You can
try this, too.
It's time to start our scent
investigation. We're going to
Use our sense of smell to try
and guess what's inside
Different cups. Here's the
first cup. Use your nose to
Smell what's inside. Then draw
a picture in your journals of
What you think you just smelled
in the cup. Time to smell the
Second cup. Pass it around and
let everyone have a chance to
Smell it. Really think about
the smell and draw a picture of
What you think it is.
Ok, here's cup .
Use your nose and give it
a good sniff. After you
Smell what's inside, try to
guess what it is.
Time to smell the last cup.
Pass it around and let everyone
smell what's inside. Then draw
A picture of what you think it
is you smelled in the cup.
Now let's find out what's
inside the first cup.
It's popcorn!
Next let's find out
what's in the second cup.
And it's...
Cinnamon.
And what was that in cup ?
A lemon.
And in the last cup,
there was...
Ooh, an onion.
Isn't it fun using
your sense of smell?
Ok, scientists, let's see what
kinds of observations you made.
Sid, would you like to go first?
Um, sure. I almost guessed
all the smells right. The first
One was popcorn and the next
one was cinnamon. This one had
Lemons and I thought the last
one was mustard, but it was
Really onions. Overall, though,
I'd say my nose did a pretty
Good job. Hey, give me , nose.
[Laughter]
good job, sid's nose. Ok,
May. Let's look at your journal.
Okey-doke. I didn't know
what this smell was. At first,
I thought there was an orange
inside. Then I thought it was
Lemons. Then I thought it was
lemon orange juice. And then I
Found out it was just lemons.
That was a tricky one.
Mm-hmm.
Hey, susie, the lemon has
lemony molecules floating into
Our nose, right?
You're right, gerald.
Hey, molecules, how do you
like the inside of my nose?
[Laughter]
I'm so impressed with all my
Scientists. You know so much
about scents and smelling and
Molecules. I think it's time to
play with all your new ideas.
Yay!
I'm totally gonna invent a
smell game.
Really?
It's time for...
"Good laughternoon"!
Hey, sid!
Yes?
What did one eye say to the
other eye?
Hmm. I don't know. What did
one eye say to the other eye?
Don't look now, but
something between us smells!
Ha ha! Get it?
Yup. I nose what you mean.
[Laughter]
hey, sid.
Yes?
What is something you can
watch that also smells?
Hmm. I don't know. What?
Smell-a-vision.
[Laughter]
hey, how do you stop a fish
From smelling?
I don't know. How do you
stop a fish from smelling?
You hold his nose! I'm a
fish and I can't smell. I can't
Smell anything!
[Laughter]
I still can't smell anything.
Oh, yeah? Well, I smell
fish. Pee-yew!
Now, that's smelly.
[Applause]
ok, let's play a game.
Ok.
And I'll be the announcer
since I'm wearing a tiara. It's
Time to play "no smell bothers
him"!
Great. Cool.
I forgot to tell you. You
have to pretend like no smell
Bothers you, ok?
Oh, it's me. Ok. Cool.
Very good. Let's see if this
smell bothers you.
Hello. I am gabriela's
assistant. Here, sid. Smell
Some rotten eggs.
Ok. [Sniffs]
mmm. No problem.
They smell good.
Wow. Um, ok.
Amazing!
Thank you.
The rotten eggs don't bother
him. How about the smell of a
Skunk?
Hello. I am a smelly skunk.
Pew, pew, pew, pew.
[Sniffs]
nope. Smells fine to me.
Ok, ok, ok. How about now?
Stinky, stinky, stinky, stinky.
[Sniffs]
you know, on that side of
Me, you actually smell great.
Unbelievable!
Thank you, thank you.
And now, it's time for the
biggest challenge of all!
Waah! Waah! Waah! Mama!
I'm a baby! Waah!
Oh, no! Not a baby who
smells like zeke. Oh, no, he
Needs to be changed. Aaah!
Hey, come back! What's
wrong? Is my diaper smell
Traveling through the air?
It must be my smell molecules.
Ha ha ha!
[All inhale deeply]
and now...
It's time...
For susie...
To sing!
Go, susie!
Oh, thank you. Well, we've
been talking a lot about scents
And smelling different things.
Well, you know who has a really
good nose for smells? Dogs.
Woof woof! Hello, woof, I am
rover and I've got a nose that
Can smell just about anything.
My name is rover, detective
rover. I'm a dog. The story you
Are about to hear is true.
* Got a nose for detecting
I do it very well
I solve each case by using
my sense of smell
I pick up the scent on the wind
that blows
Those molecules float on the air
and land right in my nose
And if it smells good
I say, "yummy!"
I can smell hot dogs at a picnic
on the case detective rover
I picked up that scent
I headed for the leftovers
On the way I got distracted
by some sweet-smelling flowers
I smelled some doggy treats
ooh, I love my smelling powers
Rotten eggs I shouldn't mention
caught my attention
When it smells bad
I say "yuck!"
I'm a dog detective
so I got back on the scent
That hot dog smell led me
so I followed where it went
I was getting closer
I thought I caught a whiff
The smell was getting stronger
so I took another sniff
Soon I was eating
great leftovers
Another case solved...
By detective rover *
yay!
Nice job, detective rover!
Yay, susie. Woof!
Oh, why, thank you.
Rover could smell all the
little molecules floating
Around.
And then the teeny molecules
went up the dog's nose.
Whee!
Inside of noses.
Smell molecules, it's time
to float home.
Ready? Let's go home. Follow
me. Woo, floating.
Now, where's my sid?
Right here, grandma.
Oh! Okey-doke. Let's roll.
Let's roll!
Ooh-hoo!
* Back seat driving
with grandma, yo!
Doo doo doo *
so, sid, tell me all about
Your day.
Well, today we learned all
about smells, and they float
Through the air.
Woo, smells. I know them
well. Yes! When I was a little
Girl, my mom baked a lot of
chocolate chip cookies, so our
House always smelled like fresh
baked cookies. Mm-mmm! I just
Loved them! But over at my
cousin's house, it smelled like
Lemons. They made lemonade all
the time. Yum! Then I would go
To my grandma's house. She
lived out in the country where
There was lots of trees and her
home had a real woodsy smell.
Mmm, that was the best! To this
day, when my schnoz smells
Something woodsy, I think of
grandma. It sure is funny how
Smells can make you think of
different people.
Grandma, you know why I like
to give you hugs?
Why?
Well, because you always
smell like your special grandma
Perfume. And that's a really,
really good smell.
Oh, that is so nice, sid.
You're a sweet one.
My grandma smells really
good and she's totally awesome.
* I learned something cool
something cool today
I know it upside-down and
inside out
I learned all about...
My sense of smell! *
[Inhales deeply]
I smell a scientist in the
house. Yeah!
[Applause]
and ska-plock!
Dad!
Huh? Oh, zeke, zeke. Shh!
Don't say anything. I'm in here!
Hey there, dad. Hi, zeke.
Hello, son. Hey, what you
got there?
Well, sid, you remember this
morning when zeke's, uh...
Well, his smell kind of took
over the kitchen?
I sure do.
Well, I thought of a way to
make it always smell nice in
Here. Ok, now it's time for an
experiment. Everybody stand way
Back.
All righty.
Ok, keep going. Now close
your eyes and inhale.
[Both inhale]
can you guess what that smell
Is?
Ooh, it's a nice smell.
Yeah?
I know. Is it flowers?
You're right! Ta-da!
Cool!
See, I built this
handy-dandy flower vase out of
Some plastic plumbing pipes.
And every morning, I'll cut
some fresh flowers from the
Garden and pop them into these
holes. That way, it will always
Smell nice in the kitchen.
Wow, I think it's awesome,
dad!
Me, too, son.
Hey, little brother. Don't
worry about your diaper. It's
Not your fault. Smells travel
through the air and that's just
What smells do.
Wow, what a fun day. We learned
that smells travel in the air
And into our noses on little
molecules. That's why I could
Smell zeke's diaper down the
hall. And that got me thinking.
Wouldn't it be great if the
world was full of only good
Smells? Ok. I've got it! Here's
my super duper ooper schmooper
Big idea! I'm gonna invent a
smellinator machine that can
Roll around like a big truck
scooping up all the bad
Smelling things in the world,
like bags of garbage and
Diapers and old socks and old
cheese and factory smoke. Yuck!
And I'll put them in a super
big good-smelling sack. But the
Smellinator also has a
spreader. It can spread nice
And yummy smelling things out
all over the place. I'll spread
Fresh flowers and cookies and
yummy cake. Everyone will be
Happy sniffing the air. The
world will be a better place
And noses will be really happy,
too.
"Everything smells so good."
"The garbage smells fantastic."
"Flowery! I could smell these
molecules forever!" And that's
My super duper ooper schmooper
big idea!
[Applause]
hey, remember, keep on smelling
The air because there's
probably a scent headed your
Way right now.
[Inhales deeply]
aah!
[Sniffs]
hey, dr. Beaks, you smell like
Plastic.
I am sid, the science kid.
[Echoing] kid, kid.
Remember, keep asking
lots and lots of questions.
See you later, scientists.
Wow!
Oh, hi. We're just checking
out our web site. You can
Explore with us.
Yeah!
That's a great idea. Come
join us. Visit pbskids.org.
There's a lot of great
information for grownups, too.
I think we look
pretty good on the computer.
Yeah.
Investigate, explore,
discover! Wow.
Hey, I know how to
investigate, explore,
And discover, and I bet
you do, too.
Investigate--that's when you
want to find stuff out.
Explore--that's when you look at
things in the world around you.
Discover--that's when you
investigate and explore and you
Find out something new.
Hey, scientists, there's lots
more amazing science coming your
Way. My friends and I will learn
how to use science tools,
Investigate how things change,
discover our senses, and
Explore how to keep our bodies
healthy. So come join me, sid
The science kid.
