Hey, is this thing on? Ha ha.
* Hey, sid
what do you say?
What you want
to learn today?
I want to know
why things
Happen and how
and I want to know
Everything now
oh, yeah
How does this thing work?
Why does that stuff change?
How does that do what it just
did? *
Hmm.
* What's up with the sky?
You think I could fly?
The world is spinning
and I want to know why
I've got a lot of questions
and big ideas
I'm sid the science kid *
[captioning made possible by
The jim henson company
and friends of nci]
Come on. Get in there!
Zeke, baby, oh.
Ah!
Oh, zekie, it's ok.
[Zeke crying]
hi. I'm sid and--
[Zeke crying]
boy, that noise is so loud! Ah.
But I have a special trick to
make it quieter.
Ah!
[Sid mutters]
[sound of crying lowers]
Ta-da--made it quieter.
[Crying sounds vary between
loud and soft]
Hmm. But why did it get
quieter? Do I have superhero
Powers? Ha ha--yes, that's it!
I have the super power to make
things quiet!
[Sid chuckles]
yeah!
[Baby chuckles]
hey, I just got to know--what's
The big idea with all this--
[crying starts]
Noise! Hmm. Why does it get
quieter when I cover my ears?
[Echo]
sid, breakfast time!
Ha ha--cool! Breakfast time!
Coming!
[Crying]
ha ha--breakfast time!
Oh, come on. Here you go.
Oh, sid, sweetie, your
breakfast is on the table.
Ok, thanks, mom. Hey, dad?
I've just got to get it in
there--
Dad?
That's one--
[hammering]
Dad?
Should do it!
Oh.
[Kettle whistles]
man, it's so noisy in here.
Huh--this looks like a job for
super sid, able to make loud
Rooms quiet with the covering
of his ears. Watch and listen.
[Baby cries]
pshoo! Pshoo!
Ah.
[Noises fade]
oh, kettle's on.
[Sid's dad hums]
hey, sid? Hey, sid!
What?
What are you doing there,
buddy?
What? Oh!
What are you doing?
I am super sid! I put my
hands over my ears to make it
Quieter--
yeah?
And it worked!
[Sid and his dad laugh]
actually, sid, you use your
Ears to hear and you covered
them. That's why it got quieter
For you.
Hmm--interesting. But, hey,
wait a minute--i could hear
Zeke crying and dad hammering
all the way in my room. So how
Did my ears do that?
Oh, I'll handle this one,
alice.
[Sid's dad chuckles]
you see, sid, the noises that
Zeke and I made traveled all
the way down to your room.
Oh.
Yeah. Here, I'll show you
what I mean. You go stand over
There--
ok.
All right?
Yeah.
And I'm going to head back
here and make some noises
Behind this door. All right?
Yeah.
And are you ready?
Super sid is ready!
[Chuckles]
ok, here I go!
[Hammering]
wow! I can hear you, dad!
Ha--how about that? You
heard the hammering all the way
Over there! Ha--oh. Now I just
have to fix the dent I made in
The door.
Way to go, mort.
Da-da!
[Chuckles]
ok.
So covering my ears made
things quiet and I can hear
Sounds from far away? Ha ha!
After breakfast, super sid
shall investigate more at
School! Ha ha!
[Brakes screech]
[music plays]
* I love my mom
uh-huh
My mom is cool
uh-huh
But now it's time
for having fun in school
Yeah! *
[Alice chuckles]
Hi!
[New song plays]
* I'm looking for my friends

[Laughter]
[kids hum]
* We're looking for our
friends and look who we found
We found each other
friends *
[Music stops]
[laughter]
You guys are awesome.
Yeah.
Hello, I am sid, roving
reporter with today's survey.
The question--have you ever
heard a loud sound? And you can
Think about a loud sound you've
heard, too--huh. Let's go get
Some answers!
Hi, sid!
[Gerald chuckles]
hey, hi, gerald.
Hi.
Hey, I have a survey
question.
Ok.
Have you ever heard a loud
sound?
Um--oh, yeah! Every morning,
I hear this loud sound. It's
Like, "gerald, time to get up!
Gerald!"
[Laughter]
That's my mom calling me.
[Chuckles]
wow. That is really loud.
Thanks.
Oh, hey, sid?
Well--yeah?
Ha ha--that's a loud sound,
too.
[Chuckles]
ha--sure is. Thanks again,
Gerald.
Yeah--you're welcome.
Hi there, may.
Hello.
Hi, gabriela.
Hi!
Hey, I have a question--have
you ever heard a loud sound?
Um--yes. I heard a siren
from a fire engine and it was
Really far away.
Ooh.
Yeah. It went "whoo, whoo,
whoo!"
[Chuckles]
thank you, fire engine may.
You're welcome.
Um--gabriela, how about you?
Well, my neighbor has a
parrot and we hear it all the
Way from our house!
[Gabriela squawks]
parrots can be so loud!
I'll say. Well, thanks,
gabriela. You sound like a real
Parrot.
Oh, thank you.
[Sid chuckles]
come on, may--let's go play.
You can be a fire engine and
I'll be a parrot.
Ok.
[Making squawking and fire
engine sounds]
Ok. Bye, parrot lady. Bye,
fire engine girl.
[Noises]
and now, the results of my
Survey. Gerald says his mom
uses a loud voice to tell him
To wake up. May says she's
heard a loud fire engine. And
Gabriela says her neighbor's
parrot is really loud--ha ha.
Hey, maybe you've thought about
a loud sound, too. And there
You have it--i am sid, roving
reporter and sound expert.
Everybody, rug time!
I hear a sound--it's teacher
susie!
Yeah!
Ha ha.
* It's rug time
come on in
It's rug time
take a seat
Rug time
we are ready
Everybody move your feet
rug time
Teacher susie
good times on the way
Rug time, come on in
we've got a lot
To learn today
la-de
Cuckoo
[laughter]
Da doo!
[Gerald chuckles]
[gerald hums]
We have a dancing
gerald--what a treat!
Ha--la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-
loo!
[Gerald scats]
ta-da!
[Music stops]
[laughter]
I was dancing.
[Chuckles]
so, who wants to share
Something with the class?
Oh, oh, I do! I do!
Go ahead, sid.
Well, this morning, it was
really noisy in my house so I
Covered my ears and it made it
quieter for me.
Amazing!
Wow. I don't know if you
realize this, sid, but you did
An experiment.
I did?
You sure did. Let's see,
where's that chart? Ah--here we
Go. Now, when you make a noise,
you create sound waves that
Travel through the air.
Wow!
Yeah.
Ooh.
You can't see them or smell
them or taste them, but you can
Use your ears to hear sound
waves,
And that's your sense of
hearing.
Wow!
I want to see those
sound waves.
Yes, and when you cover your
ears, you block the sound waves
So fewer of the waves reach
your ears.
Um, can we try making some
sound waves?
Now, that's a great idea!
Let's go to the--
super fab lab!
Grab your journals. Let's go!
Ok!
Yay!
[Music plays]
* super fab lab
Observe, compare
contrast
Wow *
[music stops]
Today, we're going to make a
sound symphony with these
Instruments!
What?
Really?
Instruments--
wait, I don't see any
Instruments.
Well, when you bang them
together, they make different
Sound waves just like musical
instruments.
Oh!
Now let's look at these
carefully. Any idea what these
Things are made of?
Oh, these things are plastic!
Mm-hmm.
Look--these are made of wood!
Oh, hey, hey, these things
are made of metal!
[Chuckles]
yes! I love metal stuff!
[Laughter]
great observations,
Everyone. And now, your job is
to investigate the different
Sounds that each group of
things makes.
Cool!
This is going to be good!
Yeah!
Ok, musical scientists,
let's start the sound symphony
Investigation.
[Gerald chuckles]
cool!
You're a scientist. You can
try this, too.
[Music plays]
it's time for the sound
Symphony investigation. We are
going to use our sense of
Hearing to listen to different
sounds. First, let's hear what
Kinds of sounds wooden things
make.
Let's listen to what it sounds
like when we bang plastic
Objects together.
Do plastic things make different
sounds than wooden things? Now,
Let's hear what sounds metal
objects make. Do they sound
Like the plastic and wooden
objects we banged together?
Now, let's make some music.
You can play with
whatever you want.
You can use objects that are
made of the same material or
You can use two different
materials, like wood and
Plastic.
Wow, you're making music.
It sounds wonderful.
Now, draw some observations
in your journals.
You can color pictures of the
different objects you used to
Make music.
Great job, scientists. You used
your sense of hearing and made a
Sound symphony.
I liked when we were all
playing together. It did sound
Like a symphony. Hmm.
I agree, may. It was our own
little super fab lab orchestra.
[Laughter]
sid, may we take a look at what
You observed?
Uh, sure. I drew my favorite
group--the plastic stuff. When
I banged them together, they
sounded like this--
[Puck puck ping puck boo boo]
oh! Great sounds, sid. Ok,
Gabriela, may we see your
journal?
Ok. I liked all three groups
of things so I drew
Everything--huh. And guess
what--
What?
The metal spoons and wood
spoons sounded different even
Though they're both spoons!
Hey, that's a great
observation, gabriela!
Oh, thanks.
I'm so impressed with all my
scientists! You know so much
About sounds and sound waves.
Mm-hmm.
And so, I think it's time to
play with all your new
Ideas--cha!
[Laughter]
yeah!
Let's go play
with our new ideas!
I'm going to make an
instrument.
Ha ha!
It's time for--
good laughternoon!
[Laughter]
what's louder than a baby
Crying?
What?
Two babies crying. What's
louder than two babies crying?
Three babies crying?
No! Three elephants crying!
[Laughter]
I'm an elephant crying--boo-hoo!
[Makes elephant sound]
[laughter]
Knock, knock.
Who's there?
Noise.
Noise who?
Noise to meet you. Nyuck,
nyuck, nyuck, nyuck.
Noise to meet you, too!
[Laughter]
[sid snores]
Hey, knock, knock!
Shh. Sid is sleeping. Don't
make a loud sound.
What?
Sid is sleeping! Don't make
a loud sound!
What?
Sid is sleeping!
Don't make a loud sound!
What? Huh. Hey,
you woke me up!
[Laughter]
now, that's funny!
[Recorded applause]
ok, let's play pretend. I am
The mommy and gerald is the
daddy and sid is the little
Crying baby.
[Gerald chuckles]
but why do I always have to
Be a little crying baby?
Oh, look at my cute little
crying baby! Ooh.
[Gerald snickers]
ok. Wah! Wah! Wah!
Oh, I am the daddy and my
baby won't stop crying.
Wah!
It's so loud--what should we
do?
Wah!
Maybe if we make funny
faces, he'll stop crying.
Hey, ok.
Wah!
[Sid and gabriela mumble]
wah! Wah, wah!
Ooh. Maybe the baby needs a
toy.
Yeah, a toy.
Toy--wah! Wah! Wah! Wah!
Look, it's a big robot teddy
bear!
[Gerald chuckles]
I am a robot teddy bear. I
Will make you laugh and stop
crying.
Yeah!
Dancing bear, dancing bear.
Ha ha!
That's good.
[Chuckles]
that's pretty good,
But--wah! Wah! Wah!
Hmm.
Wah!
I have an idea!
[Crying fades]
ah!
[Crying fades]
whoo. Ah--this is much
Better!
Much better.
Wah, wah--wah! Wah!
Ok, daddy knows what you
need.
It's time for a diaper
change!
Wah--what?
[Laughter]
I'm gonna get you.
Robot teddy will change your
your diaper, change your diaper.
And now--
it's time--
For susie--
to sing!
Go, susie!
[Laughter]
wow! I heard your sound
Waves from all the way over
here!
[Laughter]
you guys are reminding me of a
Little song about the sound
waves that we hear every day
All around us!
* Waves of sound
are running
Through the air
waves of sound
For the world to hear
take the time to listen
To the sounds
that you've been missing
Waves of sound
bring music to my ears
Sound waves float in different
lengths
Sounds waves come in
different strengths
A tuba is big
so is a football crowd
A whisper is soft
a rockin' band is loud
Your ears hear traffic
and a song with rhyme
And mom calling you for dinner
at the very same time
Some sounds are so loud
you hold your ears
When you're near them
some are so small
You can barely hear them
waves of sound
Are riding through the air
waves of sound
For the world to hear
take the time to listen
To the sounds
that you've been missing
Waves of sound
bring music to my ears
Ears are a natural
listening tool
Some are long and floppy
like the ears on a mule
You know a lot of animals
have got them, too
You hear them
and they hear you
Make a sound wave
with your voice
Make it loud or soft
now, that's your choice
Take the time to hear
the sounds wherever you go
My favorite sound is
a friend saying hello
Waves of sound
are riding through
The air
waves of sound
For the world to hear
take the time to listen
To the sounds
that you've been missing
Waves of sound
bring music to my ears *
Yay!
Ha ha, yeah! That was so
cool! I--i liked it in that
Song when the sound waves went
through the air and into
Everyone's ears.
[Laughter]
I like it when you make
Little sounds that make little
sound waves.
[Laughter]
yeah.
Well, I'm using my sense of
hearing to listen to my sound
Experts and I am impressed.
Ah.
Thank you!
Ok, scientists, it's time to
go home!
Yay!
Yay!
[Susie hums]
[kids hum]
Fa-la-la-la!
[Gerald chuckles]
now, where's my sid?
Oh, right here, grandma.
Oh!
[Grandma chuckles]
ooh--ah!
Hmm.
Now, okey-doke. Let's roll.
Let's roll!
[Chuckles]
[music plays]
Whoo-hoo!
[Chuckles]
yeah, hmm.
[Sid imitates b*at box]
[chuckles]
* Oh, yeah
oh, yeah
Back seat, back seat
back seat driving
With grandma, yeah, yeah
hmm *
Ok, kiddo.
[Music shuts off]
how was your day? I'm all ears.
[Sid chuckles]
that's funny, grandma--"all
Ears." Huh--like you have ears
all over your head--
Mm-hmm.
Or--or just really super big
ears!
Ooh!
Hey, I bet you could catch
lots of sound waves with super
Big ears.
[Grandma chuckles]
I bet you're right. Did you
Know that's the way some people
used to hear?
What?
Yes! One of my favorite
composers is beethoven. He
Lived a long time ago and wrote
lots of music, but he didn't
Hear very well so he used an
ear horn to help him ear. When
Beethoven held the horn up to
his ear, it turned his little
Ear into a big ear!
[Chuckles]
the big horn could take in lots
Of sound waves, so it made
everything seem much louder!
How do you like that?
[Chuckles]
wow! I want to make music
Just like beethoven.
Hmm.
I know--i'll start a band!
Ooh! Could I be in your
band, too?
Of course!
Whoa!
Ha ha!
My grandma's the best!
[Music plays]
* I learned something cool
Something cool today
I know it upside down
And inside out
I learned all about
[Grandma chuckles]
sound waves *
Scientist in the house!
[Applause]
[sid chuckles]
Ahem--ahem. Lady and gentleman--
[mort chuckles]
Today I learned that sound
waves travel through the air
And go into our ears.
Ooh, hey, I'm impressed, sid.
Me, too.
Ha ha--thank you. And now
it's time for the show.
Introducing the bottle can pan
band!
[Chuckles]
hey! All right!
On metals, grandma.
Hello.
On wood stuff, zeke!
Pan band!
I am sid on plastics. Here
we go. A one, a two, a one,
Two, three. Hit it!
Yeah.
Oh.
[Grandma chuckles]
go, grandma, go!
I'm working it!
[Chuckles]
ah!
Whoo!
Yeah! Whoo!
Whoo!
Grandma's rocking!
[Chuckles]
go, grandma!
Whoo!
[Chuckles]
whoo!
Whoo-hoo!
Whoo!
Whoo! Yeah! Whoo-hoo!
Whoo!
Grandma's rocking--yeah!
Ha ha!
All right, mom!
Whoo!
Ha ha!
[Music stops]
ha ha ha! Thank you!
Wow!
Thank you!
All right, zeke!
Awesome!
Cool!
Nice work.
Whew!
[Sid makes airplane sound]
hey, what an amazing day! We
Learned that sound waves travel
through the air into our ears!
And that made me think there
must be a lot of sound waves
All over the place! Whoo!
* Wavy, wavy
hmm. Ok, I've got it! Here's my
Super duper ooper schmooper big
idea! I'm going to invent a
Sound wave surfboard. Instead
of surfing on ocean waves, this
One will surf on sound waves!
We'll surf on the sound waves
of crying baby brothers and
Sisters--wah, wah, ah!--And
garbage trucks backing up.
Beep, beep, beep!
[Makes crashing sound]
and barking dogs--woof, woof!
Woof, woof! And marching bands--
* ba ba ba ba bam
Car horns--
honk, honk, honk!
Out of my way--honk! And train
whistles--whoo, whoo! We won't
Need cars or planes or
anything--just sound wave
Surfboards! And that's my super
duper ooper schmooper big idea!
Ahhh.
[Applause]
thank you, thank you! I am sid,
The--
[echoes]
Science kid!
And remember--keep asking lots
and lots of questions.
Ha--hey, here's a big sound.
See you later, scientists!
[Echoes]
whoo!
[Echoes]
echo!
[Echoes]
sound wave!
[Echoes]
wow!
Oh, hi. We're just checking
out our website. You can
Explore with us.
Yeah!
That's a great idea--come
join us! Visit pbskids.org.
There's a lot of great
information for grownups, too.
I think we look pretty good
in the computer.
Yeah!
Observe, compare,
contrast! Wow!
Hey! I know how to observe,
compare, and contrast and I bet
You do, too. "Observe"--that's
when you look really closely at
Something and listen to it and
maybe even smell it and feel
It. "Compare"--that's when you
look at two things and think
About how they're the same.
"Contrast"--that's when you
observe things and think about
What's different about them.
Be sure to check out another
episode full of amazing science.
My friends and I will
learn how to use science tools,
Investigate how things change,
discover our senses, and
Explore how to keep our bodies
healthy. See you next time on
