Wild Kratts!

CHRIS:
We're here in Central America,

in the lowland tropical
rainforest.

Hey, it's us!
The Kratt Brothers!

I'm Martin!

And I'm Chris!

And rappelling is awesome!

Being able to fly through
the air on a single rope line

feels like a superpower!

Yeah, and a certain animal has
that amazing creature power,

the ability make super-strong
rope instantly at any time.

And they're masters at building
huge invisible traps

out of their ropes.

Do you know who we're talking
about yet?

Spiders!

There are over , different
types of spiders

around the world.

Wow!

A golden orb weaver spider,

one of the largest, most amazing
spiders in the world.

MARTIN:
Now spiders are not insects.

Spiders are in a group of
animals called arachnids.

All arachnids have eight legs,
and a body with two sections.

Right down here is the head,

and this big round part,
that's called the abdomen.

And right at the tip
of the abdomen

is the secret to making
spider silk.

Tiny nozzles called spinnerets
squeeze out the silk.

And the amazing thing
about spider silk

is its incredible strength
and toughness.

These thin threads
can catch a bee,

or even a bird, in mid-flight!

The threads can absorb the force

by stretching to two-and-a-half
times their original length

without breaking.

No other material in the world
is so light,

yet so strong and tough
as spider silk.

Imagine being able to spin
spider silk, walk around on it,

and make giant webs
that are traps.

Imagine having spider power.

Hurry up, monkey dude.

We got to test this new
ultra-duty rope that Aviva made.

Almost there, bro.

Might as well try the big
overhang I've been working on

while we're at it!

Okay, here's the tough part.

Ahh, ugh!

Whoaaa!

Hey, not bad!

Seems like you invented
a pretty strong material, Aviva.

There's no way spider silk
is all that.

Look, I can bust it
with two fingers.

AVIVA:
Jimmy!

Ooo, sorry, but...

You can do that because this
is just a teeny, tiny strand.

But if we could make one
just like it, only thicker,

then you'd understand the power
of the spider's web.

I'll believe it
when I see it.

Okay, then.

You'll see it.

You with me, guys?

Of course!

You in, Orbit?

I'll name her Orbit.

Hurry up, Chris.

This is awesome!

CHRIS:
Miniaturize!

It's starting.

I think Orbit's starting
to weave her orb web!

Looks like she's sending the
first strand in your direction.

Using the wind
to blow it across.

And... touchdown!

Right on the mark.

A few tugs to make sure
it's secure.

And she's off,

spinning another strand
as she goes.

Then, she drops straight down
to the center of that.

That's the beginning of
the spokes of the web,

like a bike tire.

Whoooo!

I'm surfing the web!

These threads aren't sticky yet!

That comes later, bro,

after the structure's done.

Oh, it will be soon!

She's putting the spokes in.

We got to get a close look
at her spinnerets.

The silk comes right out
of her abdomen,

but how does she make it?

Uploading a body scan for Aviva.

This'll get her started
on the spinneret prototype.

I hope so,

because this is the most
bea-uuu-tiful silk in the world!

No other spider
has golden silk like this.

And it's also one

of the strongest
spider silks on the planet.

Beautiful and strong.

Now that's a good combination.

MARTIN:
Keep spinning, Orbit!

Ha, ha!

DONITA:
Keep spinning, Dabio.

Ah, uh, wha...

Ahhh!
(Crashing)

Mm, mm.

There!
Spider silk fabric!

Ooh, la, la,
so soft and light.

Unlike anything
I've ever touched!

I love it!

Ah!

Oh, we make teeny dresses
for spiders!

No, no, no.

Dresses for me,

and other people
who pay me for them.

I need millions of spiders
to do it.

I need their silk.

All of it!

Ohhh.

Get the jet, Dabio!

We're going to the rainforest.

Ha, ha, ha!

Can I see that scan
again, Koki?

KOKI:
Coming up!

AVIVA:
Okay, so the web starts
as a gloopy liquid,

right here
in the spider's body.

Then, the liquid gets squeezed
out of the spinnerets.

KOKI:
Yeah, all these tiny nozzles
make up the spinneret.

Each one sh**t out
a teeny strand,

and together, they make
a thread of webbing.

But the magic
of the spinneret

is that somehow when the web
liquid passes through,

it hardens instantly.

(Snapping fingers)
Like that!

That's the part scientists
have had trouble with.

AVIVA:
Okay, got it!

I'm ready to test
this prototype spinneret.

Jimmy, is the web mixture
finished?

Ugh, I thought
you'd never ask.

Let's do this thing.

Annnnd... now!

Ahhh!

AVIVA:
Sorry, JZ.

Well, that didn't work!

Hmm, too watery,
but don't think I'm giving up.

I told you I'd show you
the power of spider silk,

and that's what I'm going to do.

Well you better get to it,

because a spider doesn't have
just one web mixture.

She's got six.

Six?!

KOKI:
That's right.

Each one of these glands
in her body

makes a different type
of webbing,

each for a different purpose.

Oh, no!

I can't even get
one of them right.

JIMMY Z:
Well, it hardened.

Just a little late.

Help!

MARTIN:
All right, Orbit,
nice work on the frame.

Now for the sticky stuff.

She's already started,
Martin.

Sticky web spinneret
engaged!

This new thread
has special droplets

of sticky stuff
attached to it.

That's the key
to the spider's trap.

Wow!

Attaching it to the frame
in a spiral.

Round and round she goes!

MARTIN:
Whoo!

Coming to check it out,
Chris.

Whoa, ahhh!

Martin!

Hmm...

MARTIN:
Whoa!

Ugh!

Thanks, dude.

Thanks, spider stick!

Uh-oh, I'm stuck!

Stop moving.

Orbit might think
you're a captured bug

if you struggle too much.

Please don't eat me, Orbit.

She's done with her web.

She's taking her hiding
position.

The trap is set...

No kidding.

Incoming!

A bee!

(Bee buzzing)

MARTIN:
He's coming in at miles
per hour!

And I don't think he sees
the trap.

Will the trap hold?

(Bee buzzing)

Yes, the web held!

I could've told you that.

Amazing, that a few tiny threads
can stop a bee in mid-flight.

That's nothing.

An orb-weaver web is strong
enough to catch a bird.

And the spiders'll eat them,
too!

Uh, speaking of eating...

The first thing she does is stop
the bee with her venomous bite.

And then, she wraps it up.

A package of food
for the next few days.

Hopefully, I'm not next.

DONITA:
You're next!

What?

Dabio.

Yes, Donita.

Oh, yes, Dabio.

These are the spiders
I need.

I'll need millions of them
for my golden dress.

Ugh!

Ah!

Tortuga, come in.

Donita's after all the orb
spiders in the forest!

We got to stop her!

She took Orbit!

Oh, no, one more test,

(Whimpering)

(Blubbering)

Giant spider!!!

(Chuckling)

There's a giant spider,
Donita!

What?

Hmm...

Where are your spiders?

Huh?

I... I... was...

Don't make excuses,
Dabio.

"A giant spider took them."

You lost your spiders.

Here, hold this!

I'll fill this one myself.

Huh?

Ahhhh!

(Dabio screaming)

Whoa!

Ugh!

DONITA:
Now this is how
you collect spiders.

(Dabio groaning)

Dabio!

You lost those spiders too?

Uh, the giant spider
took them.

Uggh!

Hmm, what's this?

Hmm...

MARTIN:
Oh yeah!

CHRIS:
Wow!

Ha, yeah!

That was almost too easy!

I could spin spider webs
all day long!

Me too.

What a creature power!

All right, spiders,
you're free.

And in the wild!

High four!

What?!

A giant bird?!
But...

Ask questions later, dude.

Birds are the major predators
of orb-weaver spiders!

Everybody hide!

Ha!

Two can play
at this giant animal game.

One, two, three, four.

Uh, Donita?

Okay, four.

Four can play.

I'll take my spiders back,
thank you very much!

Not so fast, Donita.

You underestimate the strength
of the spider's web power.

Take this!

Huh? Uh-oh.

He means, take this!

Uh-oh too.

We're out of spider webbing!

That's all the spiders
in the forest, Dabio.

Let's go.

I've got spider silk dresses
to make.

Oh, no!

We messed up.

Spiders, we're sorry!

Martin, look.

Orbit!

She escaped Donita's vacuum.

Hey!

She's eating
her own webbing?

Wow.

But why?

She's collecting it
to use again later.

You can't just make an endless
supply of webbing.

You're supposed to recycle it,
like spiders do.

Yes!

That's why Orbit's eating
her old broken web.

She's ready to get back to work
and make a new one.

Spiders never give up,

no matter how many times they
have to rebuild their webs.

And we don't, either.

Let's collect
this webbing, Chris.

Koki, how strong is an
orb-weaver's thread again?

Ounce for ounce,
stronger than steel.

And when you consider
toughness--

which is how stretchy it is
without breaking--

it's better than any
man-made material.

So, if I make a strand
the thickness of a pencil,

it should be able to stop
an airplane in mid-flight.

Hmm, yeah!

Wow, if you can make
a strand that strong,

I'll believe anything
you say from now on.

Deal.

I'll need to change
some programming

to alter the spinneret.

I'll set it to magic marker
thick strands,

just in case.

Hurry, because I bet
those spiders

aren't very happy right now.

DONITA:
Uh, Dabio!

Why are we flying south?

Huh?

It's upside-down.

Turn around.

Let's get out
of this rainforest.

Spin-tastic!

My spider silk machines
will collect

every last bit of web
from these spiders.

You!

Why have you stopped?

Keep spinning silk.

Dabio!

Yes, Donita.

This one stopped.
Make it keep going.

Okay!

Uh...

How Dabio do that?

DONITA:
I don't know.

Feed it something.

I can't have any slackers.

They're lucky to be working
on my beautiful new dress.

Simply luscious.

More, I need more!

Spin, spiders, spin!

Okay, guys,
you're both all set.

Let's hope
the thick webbing works.

(Plane flying overhead)

There she goes.

C'mon, Chris, let's go!

You go ahead.

Aviva, check this out.

An orb-weaver spiderling!

Floating on an
extra-light dragline.

That's how they travel
when they're babies.

Wow!

They use their web
for so many things.

I got to try this.

Maybe I can catch Donita.

Good luck, guys!

MARTIN:
Okay, Orbit.

Hopefully, my aim
is as good as yours is

when you spin the first thread
of your web.

Yes!

Whoa!

Ugh, grr, ahh, gah!

Please, please, please hold.

Yes!

Spider webbing is incredible.

Yes!

My spider silk really is
as strong and tough

as a real spider's!

(Crashing)

Dabio!

Did we stop moving?

Ugh! Ugh!

Ugh, those Wild Kratts.

Hmph.

Well, nothing my jet's built-in
tailor's kit can't handle.

Oh no, she's free!

KOKI:
If she gets out over
the Atlantic Ocean,

we'll never be able to stop her.

Wait a second.

I'm picking up something.

It's-- it's Chris!

He's up ahead of the jet.

(Chris grunting)

Chris, what're you doing?

Making a giant web.

If those golden orb-weavers
can catch birds in their webs,

then we can catch a jet airplane
in our bigger webs!

There, frame's done.

Now for the sticky part.

Well, you better hurry

because she's coming
down the valley now!

Need an extra spinneret?

Let's do it, bro!

There!

Trap set.

Here, birdie!

Right this way.

Oh, goodie, the ocean!

Those Wild Kratts
will never catch us now!

Ha, ha, ha!

Yes!

Now that's Spider Power!

Thanks for teaching us
how it's done, Orbit!

What is this?

Dabio, get my jet
off this thing now.

DABIO:
Coming, Donita!

Huh?

Whoa!

(Dabio and Donita shouting)

CHRIS:
Stick around while we rescue
those spiders.

Ha!

Ugh! Ew!

In here.

(Gasping)

Got to deactivate
pose-beam control.

There, you're free!

Now, let's get you spiders home.

Those spiders shouldn't be
making your dresses, Donita.

They deserve to be living free
and in the wild,

not working for you.

Hey, c'mon, bro!

Let's go!

Oh, who likes spiders
anyway?

MARTIN AND CHRIS:
We do!

MARTIN:
Mission accomplished!

We figured out the secret
of the spider's web.

You did it, Aviva!

Now I understand the power
of the spider's web.

It's incredible!

And with more research,

imagine what humans can make

with a material so strong,
tough, and light.

Super-strong ropes, paragliders,
and canoes that don't break.

Helmets
and other safety gear.

Doctors even think
they can use it

for stitches
and other things.

And don't forget biodegradable
netting and fishing line.

AVIVA:
Wow, just by understanding
spiders

we can invent all those things.

And that's a much better way
to get silk for dresses too.

Hopefully, someone we know will
figure that out one day.

DABIO:
Package for you, Donita.

It's from the Wild Kratts?

Synthetic spider silk?

"No spiders were harmed in the
making of this spider silk."

Oh!

Oh, it's quite nice.

Huh?

And it all starts
with your little secret.

Spiders rule!

So, the spider's ability
to make webbing

is one of the most amazing
creature powers in nature.

And the web itself is an
intricately built trap

with a brilliant design.

Here's a step-by-step guide
to making a spider web.

The first step
is making the structure.

It starts with a single line
across the top.

This blue rope represents
the frame silk,

and of all the six different
types of spider silk,

this is the strongest.

Then, walking along
the first line,

a spider releases
another length of silk.

Then, she drops a line
right down the center

to create a "Y" shape,

and this will be the center
of the web, right here.

So now, the spider's next job
is to put in the spokes,

from the center
to the outside frame.

With the spokes in, the spider's
ready for the final step.

For this step, the spider uses

an extra thin, lightweight silk
that is super sticky.

We'll use a green rope.

The spider lays this webbing
out in a spiral,

starting from the center
and then moving outwards.

Each time the spider
hits a spoke,

she attaches the webbing
with her hind feet.

And when the spider reaches
the end of the spiral,

the web is complete.

Now, it's a waiting game.

The trap is set, and the spider
waits for her prey.

Oh, a butterfly!

It's caught in the web!

As soon as the butterfly
hits the net,

the spider pounces!

One bite to the head,

and she immobilizes
the butterfly.

She injects the butterfly
with a paralytic poison.

And now, she's wrapping it up
with a special type of silk.

This is a different silk than
she uses to make her webs.

You can see the webbing coming
right out of her spinneret.

Now the spider has
a pre-packaged meal

for whenever it gets hungry.

That is spider power
in action!

Spider silk!

This material is so light,
strong, and tough

that try as we might,

human scientists have not been
able to match it.

But if we could,

a spider silk rope
as thick as my finger

could hold back
a jet airplane.

Incredible!

Until then,
we can only pretend

to have the spider's amazing
creature powers.

MARTIN:
Keep on creature adventuring!

CHRIS:
We'll see you
on the creature trail!
