CHRIS:
Hey, we're here
in North America,

down here in the south,

off the coast
of the Florida Peninsula...

MARTIN:
On a little island
in the Bahamas,

with this awesome beach.

It's us, the Kratt brothers.
I'm Chris.

I'm Martin.
And when you're out on a beach

picking up shells...

CHRIS:
You never know when you're going

to find a shell
with a surprise inside.

Nothing.

MARTIN:
Empty.

Maybe here.

Oh.

CHRIS:
Let's try up here.

(Gasping)

BOTH:
A hermit crab.

(Laughing)

Now, this is one cool
creature.

Yeah. Here he comes,
here he comes.

Check out that:
eyes on st*lks.

(Martin laughing)

He has six legs.

Two of those are claws.

And one of those claws
is really big.

Oh, this guy
wants to move.

Let's see this guy
in action.

One of the most amazing things
about hermit crabs

is that he carries his home
on his back.

He carries a shell that can
weigh as much as he does.

Or more.

And he carries that shell
on his back all the time.

And the reason for that
is protection

from predators like seagulls.

(Cawing)

Whenever a hermit crab
feels under att*ck,

he withdraws into his shell
and blocks the entrance

with his big claw.

MARTIN:
It's an awesome defense.

Strength.
A big claw.

Carrying a shell
on your back.

Imagine if we had the creature
powers of the hermit crab.

What if?

Hey, Martin,

after that big adventure
in the freezing Arctic,

I can't wait to snooze
on a beach for a whole day.

Martin?

Oh, cool.
My bro has the same idea.

Laid out the beach towels,
plus lemonade.

(Sighing)

Aah!

(Grumbling)

(Screaming)

Ooh!

(Laughing)

Remember, for their size,

starfish are the strongest
echinoderms on the planet.

(Laughing)

BOTH:
A hermit crab!

Let's see
what he's up to.

All right, well, he's definitely
looking for something.

Maybe he's hungry.

The hermit crab
is a scavenger.

He'll eat whatever
he finds.

But shells?

He eats shells?

MARTIN:
Hmm. He does look like
he's tasting them.

CHRIS:
But no animal eats shells.

MARTIN:
Right.

He's looking
at each shell,

inspecting it and then
tossing it away.

Wow, he's picky.

(Gasping)

And that's what
I'm going to name him.

Picky.

Picky?

Well, how many shells
has he picked through?

A lot.

He's picky.
He's picky.

And every shell
is empty.

What's Picky up to?

BOTH:
Whoa!

CHRIS:
Of course!

BOTH:
He's changing shells!

Guys, guys, wake up.

(Ringing)

(Groaning)

CHRIS:
Hello? Anybody?

I bet they're sleeping.

Oh, haven't we told them
a thousand times

that early in the morning
is the best time

to see creatures
doing cool things?

Oh, yeah.
A million times.

Should I hit
the Wow Fact button?

You should hit the Wow Fact
button.

(Alarm blaring)

COMPUTER:
Wow Fact. Wow Fact. Wow Fact.

(Screaming)

Whoa!

Whoa!

ALL:
Whoa!

Whoa. Oh.

Is it time to get up?

Seriously?

The Wow Fact alert?

This early?

But it always means
they found something cool.

Hey, guys.
What do you got?

We found a hermit crab
changing shells.

Check it out.

AVIVA:
Wow.

That's so weird.

Okay, I'm awake.

We'll be right there.

Cool.

So, why does a hermit crab
live in a shell anyways?

MARTIN:
For protection.

Kind of like a turtle
has its shell for protection.

And see how his big claw
blocks the entrance?

Whoa. But a turtle
doesn't change shells.

Why does the hermit crab?

Picky. His name's Picky.

Okay. Why does Picky
change shells?

Because he grows.

When Picky grows,
he gets too big for his shell.

Then he has to find a new shell
that fits it.

And the shell gives
a hermit crab protection.

It's armor and a home.

Now that's a cool
Creature Power.

He inspected a lot of shells
before he found this one.

And I feel
really inspired

to do some hermit crab
power programming.

(Speaking Spanish)

GOURMAND:
♪ I'm on the sea ♪

♪ And the sea's
calling me ♪

♪ Feeling like seafood,
you see, Wild Kratts ♪

(Gasping)

Wild Kratts!

Didn't want to see them.

Blueberry and green pea
always interfere with my plans.

But this time they won't even
know I'm around,

because I'm going to find
the sea animal

that will be today's special
on a different beach.

(Snickering)

Wow. He's climbing.

Whoa. Hermit crabs
are really strong.

Could you imagine climbing
with your house on your back?

(Seagull squawking)

Whoa.

No luck, seagull.

A hermit crab brings his
protection wherever he goes.

Whoa!

He picked off Picky!

Come back here
with our hermit crab friend!

Get back here with Picky!

(Both yelping)

BOTH:
Ooh!

(Both grunting)

Oh!

(Groaning)

BOTH:
Huh?

Ah-ha! Mine!

Uh-oh. Aah!

Mine!

(Groaning)

Oh, no!
Picky!

Of course he's okay.

Whew. He's protected
by hermit crab powers.

Did someone say
hermit crab powers?

Two Creature Power discs
ready to go.

BOTH:
Oof!

Thanks, Aviva.

Activate Creature Powers.

(Beeping)

Uh, where's the shell?

What? Oh, no.
No shell?

I feel totally exposed.

(Whimpering)

Not only did they get
hermit crab power,

they also got
the hermit crab weakness.

They're terrified
without a shell.

Aviva, why didn't you
program a shell?

Okay, guys,
calm down.

Remember, the shell is not
a part of the hermit crab.

You've just got
to find a shell.

That's all we've got to do:
find a shell.

BOTH:

(Seagull squawking)

BOTH:

This is the perfect spot
for my crustacean café.

Now to find me
some tasty sea critters.

Aww, we're never going to find
any shells big enough for us.

It's not fair.

They all have shells.

But we don't.

(Both sobbing)

(Gourmand humming)

♪ Should I feature lobster,
crab or moray eel? ♪

♪ Which of these creatures
has special appeal? ♪

(Laughing)

(Humming)

BOTH:
Gourmand!

Aah! We really need
shells now.

BOTH:
Find a shell, find a shell,
find a shell, find a shell,

find a shell.

There are no shells
big enough for us.

Hey, wait a second.

Hermit crabs sometimes use
other things.

Wow, this is amazing.

GOURMAND:
♪ This seafood special ♪

♪ Is especially for me ♪

♪ And now I know
what my special's going to be ♪

(Laughing)

They're everywhere.
Easy pickings.

Hermit crab poppers.

It will be a fabulous dish,
with a shell so easy to grab,

pick up and suck out
the tender crab-- Ow!

(Screaming)

Oh, you've got
a strong grip.

I will boil you first.

CHRIS:
Oh, no, you won't.

MARTIN:
Not if we can help it.

Who said that?

MARTIN:
We are the guardians
of the hermit crab.

CHRIS:
We are?

MARTIN:
Yeah, sure. Why not?

Who are you?

CHRIS:
Maybe we should just go

with our usual names.
MARTIN:
Okay.

Show yourselves.

We are the Wild Kratts,

with hermit crab powers.

Oh, you're just blueberry
and green pea

hiding in some old junk.

Get out of my way.

Whoa!
Whoa!

Whoa!

Nice try, Gourmie.

You'll have to do better
than that.

Uh-oh.

(Screaming)

Yikes!

Hoo-hoo! Hermit crab powers
are tough to b*at.

Hey, where'd he go?

(Laughing)

CHRIS:

Aah!

So much for hermit crab
powers.

(Both screaming)

(Groaning)

Those shells
weren't so good.

Uh, yeah. An old tire
and treasure chest

just aren't going
to cut it.

We need new
and better shells.

And fast.

GOURMAND:
I'm coming for you!

Yeah, we need real shells,

like Picky has.

Hey, we could hide
in these shells

if we were miniaturized.

I'm on it, bros.

Miniaturizer flying in.

Yeah!
GOURMAND:
Oh, no, you don't!

Hyah!

Look at this bonanza
of shells.

Did you see that?

Yeah. What is it?

I don't know,
but I don't like it.

Let's get the Miniaturizer
back onboard

so I can check it out.

Come on, bro. We've got to find
some shells that fit.

MARTIN:
Hoo-hoo!

You could play a soccer game
in here.

Too big.

Hey, this one
is just right.

Ah, yes.

Oh, and this one
fits like a glove.

(Rumbling)

GOURMAND:

I'll find you,
hermit Kratts.

Hide.

Whew, that was close.

Oops.

Ah-ha!

I know what you're up to.

But the joke's on you,

because now you're the same size
as my hermit crab poppers.

Huh?

Ow!

I know you're in
one of these shells.

Just not that one.

Hey, is it just me

or is it getting a little tight
and uncomfortable in this shell?

(Gasping)

I think I can actually
see my claw arm growing.

Oh, no. We're...

BOTH:
Outgrowing our shells!

Koki, come in.

Something's wrong
with our Creature Power Suits.

I know what happened.

Gourmand's dough ball
disrupted the miniaturization,

making it unstable.

You are slowly returning
to real size.

Uh, not so slowly.

You have to switch shells,
like a hermit crab.

Okay, I'll distract
Gourmand.

(Grunting)

Or that one.

Huh? Ah-ha!

Whoa. These young conch shells
are nice.

I see why you like them,
Picky.

I'm going with
the shark's eye shell this time.

Ooh, this one
is a bit bigger.

Now the question is, how are we
going to stop Gourmand?

Uh, I think
the question is,

how are we going to keep
switching our shells

without getting caught
by Gourmand?

Uh-oh. I thought my new shell
was already feeling snug.

I have an idea.

The ocean's right over there.

Why don't you head
for the water?

I bet there are tons of shells
down there to hide in.

Good idea, Jimmy.

GOURMAND:
Ooh.

(Laughing)

Easy pickings.

(Both gasping)

Everybody knows that crabs
live in the water.

(Ringing)

(Muffled screaming)

(Both gasping)

They can't breathe.

They activated
with the land hermit crab,

and land hermit crabs
only get oxygen from air.

I did not know that.

AVIVA:
There are other types

of sea hermit crabs
that live in the ocean

and get oxygen
out of the water.

Or that.

Guys, you have to find a sea
hermit crab and reactivate.

(Muffled dialogue)

It's the snail that actually
created the shell.

These shells only become
available to hermit crabs

when the snails
who made them die.

A sea hermit crab.

BOTH:
Reactivating!

(Gasping)

(Sighing)

That's better.

Sea hermit crabs can breathe
in the water.

And did you know there are only
species of land hermit crabs,

but species
of sea hermit crabs?

Uh, cool.

But do you remember that we're
still outgrowing our shells?

Yeah. We need
the Miniaturizer.

Hey, Koki, how's it going?

I'm going as fast
as I can.

But Gourmand really
messed it up.

Hurry, Koki.

I can hardly get into mine
anymore, it's so small.

Aah!
Uh, yeah.

But we've got another
problem, bro.

How are we going
to change shells

with all these
predators around?

All of them would gobble up
any hermit crab

they found out of his shell.

You're right. I don't think
we can leave these shells

until we find new ones.

(Screaming)

Chris!

Uh, I'm definitely not
getting out of this shell

until I find a new one.

(Screaming and grunting)

Whoa. Good thing hermit crabs'
shell armor works.

There's one.

It's a little bit bigger.
It looks perfect for me.

I'll take this and then you
can have mine, and...

Uh-oh. Uh, the hermit crab
inside looks bigger too.

Whoa! Easy, bruiser.

(Grunting)

Hermit crabs use their claws
to battle over territory.

I'm feeling the squeeze.

(Groaning)

(Coughing)

What in the creature world?

What are they lining up for?

I didn't know hermit crabs
went to the movies.

Very funny, Martin.

They must be lining up
for something.

Well, let's get in line
and find out what.

Hey, no cutting.

Oh! Oh, come on.
That's even worse than cutting.

I don't even know the rules
to hermit crab line-ups.

I think I do.

The hermit crabs have organized
themselves in a line

from biggest to smallest.

JIMMY:
Wow, cool!

But I'm confused.

Does this mean hermit crabs
are very smart or very polite?

How and why would hermit crabs
do this?

I guess we'll just have
to wait in line and find out.

(Beeping)
You won't have to wait long.

Something's happening.

This is unbelievable.

Hermit crabs line up
to exchange shells?

Ha! I never knew
this was possible.

But now we have new
awesome shells too.

The hermit crab shell exchange
really works.

Yeah. And now all we have to do
is get back to normal size.

The Miniaturizer is fixed

and ready to make your hermit
crab powers giant-sized.

BOTH:
Cool!

Plus, you won't outgrow
your shell anymore.

And you'll be big enough
to deal with Gourmand.

(Humming)

(Laughing)

(Water bubbling)

BOTH:

we take him on one at a time.

Well, hermit crab powers
are all natural.

(Screaming)

Everything's back to normal,
Picky, my pal.

Hermit crabs,
back to where they belong:

living free and in the wild.

On the land
and in the sea.

Land hermit crabs
come in all different sizes,

from the really big guys,
like this one...

To the teeny tiny guys,
like this guy.

And as a hermit crab grows,

he has to keep changing
his shell for bigger ones.

MARTIN:
Hermit crabs will change their
shells lots of times

throughout their lives.

At first their shells
are small,

but as they grow their shells
need to be bigger.

Finding the right shell
is so important

for their survival.

The shell needs to fit
their body perfectly

to give them the protection
they need,

and the ability
to move around easily.

CHRIS:
It's got to fit just right.

MARTIN:
Hey, Chris, look.

There's one looking
for a shell.

CHRIS:
That crab's naked.

He has no shell.

MARTIN:
Oh, that is weird.

He looks like a little alien.

CHRIS:
But he's vulnerable.

He's got to find his shell,
and quick.

MARTIN:
Wait. Okay, here, here.

He's got something.

He's checking out
the shell.

Feeling inside.

Testing to see
if it's got the right fit.

CHRIS:
Yes. He's in.

He likes it.

I can't believe
we saw that.

He found his shell.

MARTIN:
Wow. And wait a second.

He's not done yet.

Now that he's in a shell,

he's checking to see
if this one's better.

Oh, yeah.
Checking it out.

CHRIS:
It's amazing that they can get

a sense of the interior
of the shell

by feeling with
their front claws.

MARTIN:
Nope, he doesn't like
that one as much.

CHRIS:
He's sticking with
his first pick.

(Laughing)

MARTIN:
(Laughing) Wow!

Good choice, buddy.

It looks good on you.

And that's how a hermit crab
chooses and changes shells.

Way to go, buddy.

Living free,
and in the shell.

(Laughing)
