Well, we're going on a bug-watching expedition!

[barks happily]

Do you want to be a bug watcher with us?

Great!

Well, let's go look for bugs in the wild untamed wilderness...

of the backyard.

Keep your eyes open for bugs, okay?

[insect buzzing]

[whimpers]

I think Blue found something.

Let's go take a look.

[buzzing stops]

Look, it's our first bug!

What kind of bug is it?

A dragonfly!

It is a dragonfly.

Wow.

I love the way it just hovers there

like a helicopter.

[Steve buzzing]

The dragonfly is one of my favorite bugs.

Hey, Blue.

What's your favorite bug?

Oh, I get it!

We'll play "Blue's Clues"

to discover what Blue's favorite bug is.

♪ 'Cause it's a really great game, yeah! ♪

So remember-- Blue's paw print will be on the clues.

that I'm really going to need your help today

trying to figure out what Blue's favorite bug is.

First, let's draw a curved shape

that's flat on one end and another one.

There-- wings!

So, we're trying to figure out what Blue's favorite bug is

and our first clue is "wings."

So, what could Blue's favorite bug be with wings?

Maybe.

But I think we should find some more clues and some more bugs.

This way, bug watchers.

We're going on a bug-watching expedition.

I think I know what kind of bug that is.

I'm pretty sure that's a grasshopper.

[barks "grasshopper"]

Hey, what's that grasshopper doing?

It's hopping.

Yeah, it is hopping.

See how it uses its big back legs

to hop through the grass?

Why does it have to hop around like that?

You know, that's a good question.

So, why do you think the grasshopper hops?

Yeah, could be.

Maybe it's looking for food.

Or maybe that's just how it gets around.

[barks bye-bye]

Look, Steve!

I can hop, too!

[barks happily]

Come on, let's go look for more bugs.

Okay, do you see any other bugs?

[barks happily]

Did you find a bug?

[whispering]: Yes, Shovel.

See?

It's right there.

Oh... I've seen that kind of bug before.

I think it's called a "mole cricket."

A mole cricket?

Well, what is it doing in the dirt?

It's digging.

It is digging.

It's digging tunnels just like a mole.

Oh... oh, that must be why they call it a "mole cricket."

But I wonder why it digs these tunnels.

Let's take a closer look and figure it out.

So, why do you think

the mole cricket digs these tunnels?

Good thinking.

Maybe it's making its home.

It could live in that tunnel.

Yeah, or maybe it's resting.

That's my favorite bug.

It digs in the ground, just like me!

Cool.

Hey, let's go see if we can find some more bugs.

That's a good question.

STEVE: Well, why do you think the stick bug is hiding?

Oh, yeah.

Maybe it's scared.

Or maybe it's looking for food.

I'm going to watch some more.

but we're going to go look for some more bugs.

Maybe, but I think we should find our last clue

just to be sure.

[Mailbox buzzing]

That's the praying mantis.

MAN: You know what a close relative of mantids are?

BOY: No.

Cockroaches.

These are Madagascar hissing cockroaches.

This one's a millipede from Africa.

BOY: Oh, millipedes.

This is like a rock.

ALL: Bye, Steve!

Wow, pretty wild.

Hey, let's get back to looking for bugs.

[barking]

Hey, Blue just skiddooed into that big bug book!

Come on.

♪ Blue skiddoo, we can, too.

Wow!

Huh, look at all these trees.

Wow.

[stalk creaking]

Hey, that's not a tree.

That's a blade of grass.

We're really small!

Just like bugs!

Blue, now we'll get to see

what it's really like to be a bug.

[barks in surprise]

Look at that ant.

It looks so big...

because we're so small.

Hi, I'm Antoinette.

I'm a worker ant.

Today is my first day on the job

and I think I need some help.

Oh, okay.

Do you want to help Antoinette?

Great.

All right, lead the way.

First I have to find some food to bring back home.

Okay, so we need to help Antoinette

figure out how to find her food.

All right.

What's that other ant using to find its food?

Its antennae.

Its antenna.

Antoinette, use your antenna

to help you find your food.

Oh, that's right.

My antenna helps me sense where the food is.

Oh, that crumb is the perfect food

for me to bring back home.

Great.

Well, uh, let me give you a hand with that.

Ah...

[grunts]

Blue...

[both grunting]

Wow.

It's so big and heavy, I could barely move it

and it's just a crumb-- imagine that.

[barks in surprise]

Why do you think Antoinette can move

this big, heavy crumb?

She's strong.

I am strong.

I'm going to carry this crumb all the way home.

Come on.

Okay.

Why don't... why don't you get that, then.

This is my home, the anthill.

Let's get in line.

First time in an anthill.

This is the ant colony.

Wow!

Nice colony.

Yup, and everybody's got a job to do.

Wow.

Look at all these rooms.

That's where they take care of the babies.

This is the food storage room.

Come on.

Thanks for helping me bring some food back home.

Now I want to bring some food to my mom.

There she is.

That big ant over there is my mom.

She's the leader of the entire colony.

Really?!

Well, what do you think Antoinette's mom is called

Okay, now that we're in our thinking chair, let's think.

You will help, right?

Great.

So, we're trying to figure out what Blue's favorite bug is.

And our clues are:

Wings...

Colors...

And... a chrysalis.

So, what could Blue's favorite bug be

with wings, colors and a chrysalis?

Hmm...

Well, what if the wings had these colors on them?

Yeah.

But then what about the chrysalis?

Well, a chrysalis is kind of like a cocoon, right.

So maybe the bug could come out of the chrysalis.

Well, what kind of bug has wings with colors

and comes out of a chrysalis?

A butterfly.

A butterfly!

Yeah, because a butterfly has wings with colors

and it's in a chrysalis

when it changes from a caterpillar into a butterfly.

We just figured out Blue's Clues!

[music begins playing]

Come on, bug watchers, let's go see if we can find a butterfly.

And it's shaking.

Do you think a butterfly is ready to come out?

I want to see the butterfly.

Hey, Periwinkle.

Remember how we found the grasshopper

the mole cricket and the stick bug in the backyard?

ANTOINETTE: Hi, Steve.

Down here.

Oh.

Hi, Antoinette.

Remember how we helped Antoinette find food

to bring back to the ant colony?

[Blue exclaims]

The chrysalis.

It's starting to open.

Wow, what a beautiful butterfly!

Blue, you got to see your favorite bug.
