02x02 - Into the Deep Woods

Post by bunniefuu »

[forlorn music playing]

[narrator] In the early days
of the Great Crumble,

the Big Man spent every waking moment

looking for his family...

[door slams]

Family...

...hoping he could bring them home.

[panting]

[narrator] But this wasn't home anymore.

Now it was just a place

full of bad memories.

No...

f*ck.

Where are you?

Where have they gone? [grunts]

[agitated hollering]

[wailing]

Family?!

Louisa.

[unsettling undertones play]

[Jepp whimpers]

[heart pounding faintly]

[indistinct throng chanting]
Humanity first! Humanity first!

[chanting continues] Humanity first!
Humanity first! Humanity first!

Humanity first! Humanity first!

- I'm tired.
- [chanting stops]

I don't know about y'all,
but I'm tired of waiting for answers.

[throng] Yeah!

We've all done
what we've had to to survive,

but I'm tired of fending for myself.

I'm tired of feeling like I got a target
on my back just for being human.

[throng] Yeah!

It's a confusing world
out there right now,

but I'll be damned
if the Last Men don't bring

a little order to the chaos.

Yeah!

[throng whooping, hollering]

Join us! Save humanity!

Yeah, Coach!

Yeah!

[whooping and hollering continue]

[Jepp] Coach.

Of course you made it.

Great Crumble don't stand a chance
against number .

Huh.

[clears throat]

How about Louisa?

I lost her.

Her and the baby, our... son.

I looked everywhere for them.
The QZs, the camps, the registries.

I don't know where else to look.

Is it true what you said in there?

[fraught, distressing music playing]

Which part?

About getting answers.

This... will get you in a lot of doors.

Doors that locked you out because you're
a nobody in this new world, like I was.

With the Last Men,

you can be somebody again.

You can take back some of what's yours.

I only want my family.

Listen to me, T.

If they're out there,
Last Men are gonna find them.

[muffled] Humanity first! Humanity first!

[throng] Humanity first!

You with us?

[distorted] You with us?
You with us? You with us?

[chanting continues] Humanity first!

[Gus] Big Man?

Big Man!

- Big Man!
- [gasps]

Where is he? Where is... [shuddering breath]

[Jepp breathing shakily, spluttering]

You're okay.
You're just having a panic att*ck.

Slow your breathing.

[gulping gasp]

Count to ten.

One.

[inhales deeply] Two.

[haltingly] How'd you find me?

Three.

- I heard your kid on the radio.
- Four.

But by the time I got there,
he was already taken to the Preserve.

[Jepp] Five.

[breath evening out]

Six.

- Then I saw you.
- Seven.

Figured if the Last Men sh*t you,
you must be on my side.

Did you see anyone else?

A girl, curly hair, punk attitude.

She was at this house in GoGro.

They said over the radio
they found a safe house in the area.

Maybe it was
the same one your friend was in.

I guess it b*rned down,
then I lost contact.

I'm sorry.

No.

If she's smart, she'll be long gone.

I'm Aimee.

Where's my jacket?

I left it there.

I liked that jacket.

- You're welcome.
- For leaving it there?

For saving your life.

You're that Preserve lady
who took in all those hybrids.

And you're on all those wanted posters.

Good. Heart rate's steadied.

Now we can start.

Start what?

Oh sh*t.

Here's the plan.

Our kids are here at the Preserve.

At midnight,
I'll come in through the front.

[Jepp chuckling wryly]

Good luck.

This bitch is crazy.

[grunting] God.

You're leaving?

That place will be a fortress.

If I'm gonna get that kid back,
I'm gonna do it my way.

Or we can do it together
and get all the kids back.

It's a lot easier to save one.

I know that place better than anyone.

Give me one chance.

You owe me at least that.

I'll go in, find where they're keeping
the kids, and we'll get out here.

It's an old tunnel blocked off years ago.
It leads right under the zoo.

They probably sealed it off.

They don't even know it exists.

It leads to an exit on Crosby.

When I give the signal over the radio,
you'll take my truck and meet us there.

It's a good plan.

It's not a good plan.

[Wendy] Mom, we're alive.

We're in the pump house
under the elephant pen.

They took Roy.

You answer that and you'll ruin
your only advantage. Surprise.

[determined music playing]

- What the hell are you doing?
- Roy was taken.

I have to get in there.

What happened to midnight?

You said our one advantage is surprise.

No one expects me
to go in the front in broad daylight.

Wait for my signal.

I didn't say I was helping.

Gus is waiting for you.

I didn't say his name.

You talk in your sleep.

Damn.

[wistful, nostalgic music playing]

[determined music swells]

- [grunts]
- [Last Man ] Need a hand over here!

- [Last Man ] Got a double load!
- [Last Man ] Double load!

[guard ] Hold on, let me check.

[scanning devices beeping]

[guard ] Check in here.

[klaxon wails]

Hood off.

Goggles.

[scanner beeps]

Hand.

- Hand!
- [clears throat]

I need to do a blood test.

[foreboding music builds]

[computer beeping]

[music swells, trails off]

You're good.

[heavy, oppressive music playing]

[klaxon wails]

[Last Men chattering indistinctly]

[tense, rousing music playing]

[Last Man over radio] All units...

- [Last Man grunts]
- [basket rattles]

- [Johnny] What do you need flowers for?
- [Dr. Singh] It's a need-to-know basis.

[Johnny] I want to help you
while I'm in charge, Doc,

but if things aren't to his liking
when he gets back,

we're both gonna get hell.

Everything will be to his liking
before he returns, Johnny.

[Johnny] I hope so, for your sake.

[relieved sigh]

[music intensifies]

[startled yelp]

You new?

[hesitantly] I just got assigned.

Hybrid duty.

Then what are you doing
with the Choc-o-Rockets?

Figured we could use a snack.

Want one?

Which base did you train out of?

What's it to you?

Answer the question.

[suspenseful music playing]

[Jepp] There you are.

They're looking for us
over at the elephant pen.

She's with me.

Hang on. I'm gonna need to see your IDs.

[Jepp] Relax, man.

Let's go.

[footsteps receding]

[both panting]

Thank you for saving me.

I'm not.

I'm trying to stop you from messing up
my one sh*t at breaking out Gus.

Let's go break him out.

Damn right.

Hold it.

[tense stinger]

I took out a defector yesterday.

Had a little hybrid with him.

You know anything about that?

Sure do. Yeah.

I heard that you sh*t his ass real good.

[guard] Uh-huh.

Right in the chest.

- [gripping flesh roughly]
- [Jepp grunts]

I think you better come with me.

[Jepp grunting]

[resounding clang]

Nice move.

Kids are this way. Come on.

- [guard ] Is that Hulk?
- Hey. We gotta get out.

No. We have to get the kids.

We get caught and no one gets their kids.

Soldier down! Sound the alarm!

- [klaxon wails]
- sh*t.

We're so close.
They won't even know we tried.

Look. They'll know.

Gus will know.

Hey, you! Stay there. Don't move!

[klaxon wailing]

[guard ] Open this door!

You expect me to fit in there?

I didn't expect you
to be here for this part.

Open this damn door right now!

[Aimee] Go! Go!

Damn it! Oh God.

Stand back! Stand back!

[guard grunts]

[music swells, subsides]

[suspenseful music continuing]

[Johnny] No!
No one said anything about a tunnel!

- You, I need eyes in the sky, now.
- [guard] Yes, sir!

- You two, go get a Jeep.
- Roger that.

And someone close up the g*dd*mn tunnel!

[loud bang]

[Last Man] Alpha Unit, hit the streets.

Take the south gate.
We'll head east and west.

Fire up the drone!

Lunchtime, freaks.

[food rattles]

[kids clamoring]

[gentle, optimistic music playing]

Dog? How did you get in here?

Big Man! That means he's alive.

Told ya! We're getting out of here!

[excited, restrained chatter]

Listen up.

We need to be ready to move
when they get here.

We can meet Roy!

- [kid] Roy! Meet Roy.
- [kids muttering excitedly]

They will come.

For all of us.
As long as we stay together.

Believe it.

Where are we gonna go?

Maybe the place where Gus grew up.

No, thanks.

I thought it was your home.

I thought so too, but...

I don't need to go back there.

[Bobby, haltingly] Bobby can't.

Collar.

Good point, Bobby.

We have to get that off before Mom comes.

[unsettling music playing]

[restrained sobbing]

What happened to you, Gus?

[Rani] Up here?

[Dr. Singh] Our new room.

[Rani] Hmm.

I bargained with Johnny
for a change of scenery.

I needed the aviary for work.

I feel alive again.

Thank you.

Uh, I'd say make the place your own,

but I, uh, can't seem to find
a Target around here that's still open.

[chuckles] You're in a good mood.

Does this mean work is going well?

Yeah. I might be onto something big.

Maybe even a breakthrough about where
the hybrids came from in the first place.

Wow, how did you, um...

This, um...

There's this deer boy, Rani.
There's something about him.

I think his father made him.

Have you been getting enough sleep?

Every minute I'm asleep is another minute
I'm not finding our way out of here.

Hey.

I'm worried about you, Adi.

Maybe you can get
a good night's sleep tonight,

in this bed, with me.

[voice over radio]
Search for intruders has gone citywide.

[guard] Copy.

Everything all right?

Yeah, just the nut job
that used to live here. Don't worry.

Someone lived here?

Message for you, Doc.
The florist has arrived.

Adi?

I have to work.

[voice over radio]
...remains unaccounted for...

[footsteps receding]

[somber, uneasy music playing]

[kids clamoring]

[Bobby] Pull!

- [grunting]
- [door opens]

Single file line.

[tense music playing]

[Maya exclaims, grunts]

You think I don't know that look?

I grew up with an older brother.

Yeah.

You guys are hiding something.

[delicate, uneasy music playing]

Hands! Flippers.

Where I can see 'em.

This day just gets better and better.

You. Deer kid. With me.

Singh wants you.

[door closes, locks]

What if Mom comes before Gus gets back?

[uneasy music continuing]

Go away.

[Gus yelping]

[door closes]

[Johnny] I put my neck on the line for you
'cause you promised results.

I hope you know what you're doing.
These flowers can k*ll us.

[Dr. Sing] No one's found a cure
in a decade, Johnny.

If I'm going to find one,
I have to take some chances.

[Johnny] You got ten minutes. That's it.

You better hope this works, Doc.

[delicate, intriguing music playing]

- [switch clicks]
- [feedback whines]

[Dr. Singh] Gus.

[music trails off]

Can you hear me?

Uh-huh.

I want to try
something different this time, Gus.

You told me how you got to see your Pubba
after falling in the purple flowers, so I...

I brought the purple flowers to you.

The pollen seems to have
a hallucinogenic effect on your kind.

Sort of like, uh, hypnosis.

Maybe these flowers can help you
remember where you came from.

I... I need to go back.

I need your help, Gus.

If this doesn't work, I'll have to go back
to taking your friends.

Okay, Gus.

Let's get started.

[low, uneasy music playing]

[nervous, shaky breathing]

Take me back to where you were born.

[discomforting, distorted tones playing]

[Dr. Sing, distorted]
Where Pubba made you.

[high-pitched ringing]

[birdsong]

[trees creaking]

Whoa.

[rich, teeming wildlife calls]

[high-pitched ringing intensifies]

[Pubba] Once upon a bye, there was
a mischievous boy named Tom Sawyer.

[Pubba's voice echoing]

- [fence rattles]
- [wind whistles]

Always getting into trouble...

Getting off on danger.

[uneasy audio distortions]

I don't want to be here!

Hey, hey, don't worry. Don't worry.

I'm right here with you.

Now, Gus, it's important you tell me

everything you're seeing

if you want to go back to your friends.

What are you looking at

right now?

[Dr. Singh echoing]

[Gus] The fence
that Pubba told me never to cross.

Except I'm on the other side of it.

Come on, Gus.

We'll cross the fence together.

Let's go.

[ominous music builds, fades away]

[Jepp] You know how to get
to the nearest city exit?

No.

We can ride this out in my office.

You don't get it.
We need to leave the city now,

find some muscle, then come back.

I just left my kids.

I am not leaving the city too.

Well, you can do whatever you want.

I'm getting the hell out of here. [grunts]

[Aimee] Wait, Jepperd.

What... What about Gus?

Dog is a promise.

You can bet your ass I'm gonna keep It.

[Aimee] Fine.

But you need me.

And the only way
we're getting out is my truck.

[Jepp] Damn it!

[angrily] Come on, then.

[engine splutters]

[softly] sh*t.

- What's wrong?
- I don't know.

Don't tell me this was the plan,
to use a broken truck.

Shut up! And let me think.

[engine continues spluttering]

[brooding, introspective music playing]

Knock-knock.

Beans on toast.

[Johnny chuckles]

Because you're British.

[Rani] Ah.

So, you're the cook around here.

I take care of all the prisoners.

Kind of in charge
of this whole place until Dougie...

Abbot... [clears throat] ...gets back.

Impressive.

And the food's plated beautifully.

I used to be a chef.

Thank you.

W... Was this place someone's home?

Some lady ran
some sort of a hybrid sanctuary.

Just let them run around free.

Like pets.

But don't worry,
they're all in the kennels now.

Hybrids lived here?

Crazy, right?

I even heard one of them can talk.

I didn't know they were capable.

Yeah, there's a lot of misconceptions
out there about the hybrids and the Sick.

I mean, like you.

I mean, everyone is scared of you.

But I know you're not contagious.

I've never even seen one before.

[brooding music continues]

I'm sure you could
accompany me to the kennels, right?

God, I don't know, Mrs. Singh.

That's not really...

I thought you said you were in charge.

[deep, resonant audio distortion]

[Dr. Singh] Where are you, Gus?

It's cold...

and the trees are gone.

[Dr. Singh] Focus, Gus.

We're running out of time.

You need to go home.

I don't want to.

Don't you want to see your Pubba?

What happened to you at home, Gus?

Did this Pubba hurt you?

No.

He just lied to me about some things,
and that hurt.

Was he a scientist, like me?

He was nothing like you.

Then show me, Gus.

You need to help me. Do it.

[wind whistling]

[Gus whimpers]

The cabin.

A cabin. Not a laboratory?

No.

It's the cabin.

Pubba's cabin.

I'm going back. My friends need me
and we have to stay together.

[forcefully] No!

I'm sorry, Gus. I...

I lied to you as well, I'm afraid.

I told you that you were helping someone
that I care about very, very much.

But do you know the real reason
why I need answers, Gus?

Because I'm a prisoner too.

Just like you.

My life is threatened every moment
I don't have the answers, but I...

But I think we can help each other, Gus.

Will you help me?

Okay.

Okay.

[delicate, wistful music playing]

[suspenseful music building]

[door hinges creak]

What are you looking at now?

Pubba.

[Dr. Singh] Does he have
any equipment around?

Like in my laboratory.

Scientific tools, instruments?

No.

He didn't have stuff like that.

[Dr. Singh] I don't understand.

He hid you, he raised you out here
in the middle of the woods on his own.

There must be something more to you, Gus.
Why else would he do that?

Because...

Because he loved me.

He loved me and he kept me safe.

He was my Pubba.

Even if he wasn't really my Pubba.

[flames whoosh]

No, Gus.

If it wasn't him,
then someone else made you.

Go back further. When you were younger.

When you and Pubba
first came to the woods.

I was just a baby.
I can't remember that far.

That's the beauty of this place, Gus.

You can remember things
you didn't even know you knew.

[threatening music playing]

[wind whistling]

- I have to go back.
- [distorted] No!

Do you remember anyone
in lab coats like mine?

They made you, they must have!

[threatening music continues]

[cacophonous din]

What do you see? Tell me.

[Gus] Science place.

- Project Midnight Sun.
- Yes.

This is where you're from.

Tell me where this is.

[echoing] Dr. Miller, is the unit stable?

- [Gus] Who's that?
- [Dr. Singh] Who's who? A scientist?

Just some lady.

Louder, Gus!

[Gus] I don't know her.

Look for a name!

[staticky audio distortions]

Fort Smith!

- [wind rushing]
- [window pane shatters]

- No! Let me out of here!
- What's happening, Gus?

No! No! No! No!

[guttural growling]

Wake up, Gus. Wake up. Wake...

- [Dr. Singh grunts]
- [Gus panting]

It's okay. You're okay.

Whoa. That got really scary for a sec.

Yeah. [haltingly] It's over now.

We got what we wanted.

The theories were true.

Fort Smith created the virus.

And you, Gus.

Thank you, Gus.

You've given me something
that I thought I'd lost a long time ago.

Your marbles?

[gentle, soulful music playing]

Hope.

[thunder rumbling]

[horse neighing]

[hooves clopping in distance]

[horses whickering]

[soft, wondrous music playing]

[suspenseful music building]

[grunts]

Pinkies.

You first.

I can't let anyone
get my Oma and Opa sick.

Hey, I need a ride.

You alone?

I'm looking for some friends.

If you're looking that way,
you can come with us.

Only if you don't mind playing pinochle
every time my Opa wakes up from his nap.

What's pinochle?

Pure boredom.

You a mechanic before the Crumble?

Therapist.

Ah. That's how you know
how to do that breathing stuff.

Count to ten.

Nope. That came
way before my therapist days.

I was a m*llitary kid.

Moved a lot.
And then my mom got discharged.

m*llitary doesn't like to diagnose PTSD,

but she had it bad.

By the time I was ,
I knew how to recognize a trigger.

Battery's still got some juice.
We'll be okay.

[dark, menacing music playing]

You didn't tell me they had drones.

They didn't used to.

[dark music continuing]

- [engine revs]
- Push!

- [wincing in pain]
- [engine spluttering]

g*dd*mn!

[Jepp bellowing]

[drone trilling]

[Jepp] Go for it!

That thing is sending our location
to every unit out here.

We gotta lose it.

Right! Here! Right!

Watch it!

[Aimee] Sorry!

[Last Man over radio]
Drone in pursuit of a red truck.

Female driver, male passenger.

A really, really big male passenger.

[bright, optimistic music playing]

[Bobby] Hurry!

[Earl grunts]

- [neck cracking]
- [Bobby whimpers]

Are you ready?

- [Bobby] Huh?!
- Ready.

- [Earl straining]
- [Bobby yelping]

[Earl grunts]

[Bobby flails, grunts]

[gasps]

- [kids murmuring]
- [Bobby groaning]

[morosely] Bobby stay behind.

[intense, fast-paced music playing]

[Jepp] Stay under the trees.

[Last Man on radio]
Drone unit lost them,

but they appear to be headed
towards the zoo.

B-Squad, shut down the front gate.

Got 'em. Drone unit four in pursuit.

g*dd*mn it.

[can clatters]

[Last Man on radio] Drone down.

Patrol units converge
on last known coordinates.

Maintain pursuit.

Come on.

[Last Man on radio] Coordinates came in.
Alpha, Tango, Romeo, secure it.

[brakes screech]

[Jepp] We got company.

[g*n cocks]

Turn here!

Faster!

Hurry up!

[g*nf*re]

- Here, right!
- Okay!

[Last Men clamoring]

Aw, sh*t.

[Jepp] Go for it!

[Last Man ] Number three!

Clear out!

[brakes screeching]

[fence rattling]

sh*t.

[music intensifies]

[Last Man ] The truck has fled the city.

All units, stand down.

[Last Man ] Repeat.
The truck has fled the city.

[forlorn music playing]

Is she leaving us?

[soft, somber music playing]

Move.

[grunts]

[guard] Get up.

What's up? Why are you slowing down?

Because of them.

[brakes screeching]

[hand brake sets]

- [hooves thundering]
- [deep lowing]

I could scare 'em a bit.

Put some pep in their step.

No.

Let 'em be.

They don't have to be
on human time anymore.

We wait for them now.

We should have had our kids by now.

If I had just waited until midnight.

[forlorn music playing]

And now I'm leaving them behind.

Look. Amanda...

Aimee.

You're not the only one who lost somebody.

We'll get 'em back.

[winces]

Ah. Let me.

You said earlier
that we needed to find more muscle.

Did you have someone in mind?

Yeah, I know some guys.

Are they former Last Men like you?

Yeah, but you can trust 'em.

What did you do for them anyways?

Nothing good.

- Did you...
- No.

I didn't take kids.

All finished.

Thanks.

[herd stamping, lowing in distance]

Let's go get your guys.

[somber, determined music playing]

You guys are still here!

But what happened? Where's Big Man?

They left us.

We don't know why,
or if they're even coming back.

Well, if he left,
I'm sure he had a reason to.

We can't wait to find out.

We're getting out of here by ourselves.

And I know where we'll go.

Yellowstone.

Yellowstone?

It's where Pubba raised me.

It's basically my home,

and now it can be our home.

Wait, I'll ask.

They want to know what it's like.

Well, it's big and green,

and... it has maple syrup,

and jumping on rocks.

And when you go to sleep,
you get this warm feeling

in your stomach.

Here, I'll show you.

[gentle, emotional music playing]

[singer vocalizing wistfully]

[thunder rumbling]

[emotional piano and strings continue]

What are the odds that I'd meet a hybrid?

A deer boy who could talk,

who could be
the answer to all my questions.

Perhaps...

it was meant to be.

[wistful vocalizing continues]

[gasps]

[wistful, emotional music trails off]

[suspenseful outro music playing]
