Emma: Hmm?

Ah.

My family,

do you wanna hear about ’em?

Mujika: Mm-hmm.

Emma: His name is Phil.

Isn’t he cute?

And that’s Sherry.

She’s elegant and super sharp.

Mujika: And who is that?

Emma: That’s Carol.

She’s only one, but sometimes

she can make the weirdest faces.

She’s hilarious!

Mujika: Who are those two?

Emma: They’re Naila and Damdin,

and the one

behind ’em’s Eugene.

Ray: Checkmate.

- ( boys cheer )

- Dominic: Good move, Ray!

Sonju: Ray, you’re going to make

a great general one day.

- ( Ray chuckles )

- Jemima: Yeah.

Norman would’ve been

a great one, too.

( Dominic sighs )

Sonju: Who’s that?

( Ray sighs )

Emma: This is Norman.

Norman.

Before they shipped him out,

I promised that I wouldn’t

let any more kids die

and I wouldn’t stop, not until

I got everyone off that farm.

Mujika: Ah.

( Emma chuckles )

This is so weird, isn’t it?

I mean, I can’t get over

how totally

undemonlike you are.

( Mujika gasps )

( Emma gasps )

Wait! I’m sorry.

I didn’t mean to be rude!

Mujika: No, it’s fine.

Emma: You’re not that different,

are you?

Like us humans,

you demons come

in all shapes and sizes, too.

Mujika: That is true.

Over the past thousand years,

our appearance

has changed quite a bit.

Emma: Huh?

( Mujika chuckles )

Before you,

I had never seen a human,

much less spoken with one,

and now I have.

You are neither enemies,

nor food.

You are unlike

any living thing.

I am glad to have met you

and to have spoken with you

and to have become friends

with you.

Emma: Yeah, so am I.

I’m glad to have met you

and that I got to know you.

Thank you

for the past six days.

But most of all,

I’m glad we’re friends, too.

( breeze echoing )

( display crackling )

( Ray sighs )

( Emma grunts )

( grunts )

It’s all clear. Ready?

Children: Mm-hmm.

( footsteps crunching )

( children murmuring )

- ( all gasping )

- Yvette: Neato!

( children laugh )

( bird shrieks )

Christie: It’s so big!

Don: It’s endless!

Emma: That’s the wasteland, huh?

Sonju: You’ll reach

your destination in about a day.

Just keep going south.

Emma: B zero-six, three-two.

Don: Mm-hmm.

Alicia: Aw, Mujika,

I don’t wanna say bye!

I don’t want you to leave.

Mark: Can’t you stay with us

a little longer?

Ray: Cut it out, guys.

Alicia: Aww.

Ray: They have places

they need to go, too.

And besides,

we can’t always depend on them.

We need to survive on our own.

( both sigh )

Sonju: Don’t worry.

You won’t run into

any demons out here.

Just keep walking,

and if you make good time,

you should see

your Mr. Minerva tonight.

( children laugh )

Sonju: Whatever you do,

stay clear

of the forest and water.

You got that?

Boys: Y-Yes, sir!

Sonju: If you do

come across any demons,

you run.

And if you can’t,

then you fight.

Aim for the center

of their face,

for the eyes.

- ( children murmur )

- Emma: Got it.

Sonju: Well,

watch your backs out there.

( Gilda sighs )

Mujika: I wish you well.

All of you,

may you have a safe journey.

Anna: You, too.

( Mujika chuckles )

Emma.

( object clinks )

Emma: Wh-What is that?

Mujika: A special amulet.

Keep it close.

I am sure it will protect you.

Emma: Thanks a lot, Mujika.

Mujika: Think about us

from time to time,

- and take care of yourself.

- ( Emma grunts )

Ray: Hey, Emma!

It’s getting late. Let’s go.

Emma: All right.

Goodbye, Sonju, Mujika.

- Anna: Goodbye!

- Emma: Thank you again!

- See you!

- ( children laugh )

Sonju: Goodbye,

and safe travels.

Mujika: Goodbye, all!

- May we meet again someday!

- Children: Goodbye!

Thoma: Thank you!

Sonju: You got pretty attached

to them, didn’t you?

Mujika: As much as you did,

even though they are escapees.

If we turned them in, we could

have lived well for six months.

( Sonju chuckles )

Mujika: Are you thinking--

Sonju: No. I won’t

hand them over to the farm.

Mujika: Before, you said

you were curious about them,

but that is not true.

Why did you want

to save those children?

Sonju: Why not?

They’re good kids after all.

Mujika: True.

They are kind and diligent.

Sonju: And so smart.

- Mujika: Yes.

- Sonju: So, so smart.

The highest-grade product

from a top-class farm

with the best brains.

( Mujika gasps )

( Sonju chuckles )

Don’t get me wrong.

I don’t want to eat those kids,

- not them.

- Mujika: Meaning?

Sonju: If those kids

get to breeding,

they’ll make a generation

of wild, free-roaming,

all-natural humans.

In time, there’ll be so many,

we’ll have to hunt

and eat them

to keep their numbers in check.

Mujika: Then you want

to eat humans after all.

Sonju: I do.

According to

the original faith,

the gods don’t mind

if we k*ll their creations,

as long as it’s all

for the hunt.

If they’re wildlife,

I’ll eat them.

( sighs )

What a day that’s going to be,

when I can eat my fill of human.

See you in a bit.

I have business

to take care of.

Mujika: What business?

Sonju: Wait here,

and when I get back,

I’ll tell you.

( breeze blowing )

Gilda: Hey, Christie,

do you know our heading?

Christie: Oh.

East-southeast is that-a-way.

( boys murmur )

( both gasp )

Thoma: He’s right!

( owl hooting )

Demon: Hmm?

( heavy footsteps thudding )

( thud )

( Demon growling )

( blade clanks )

( metal clangs )

( owl hooting )

Mark: Are we there yet?

We’ve been walking all day.

Ray:

Check the coordinates, Emma.

Emma: Okay. Hang on.

- ( gasps )

- Don: We’re here.

Thoma: What?

Emma: This is

B zero-six, three-two.

Lannion: Huh?

Emma: That’s what it says.

The location we’re at right now

is B zero-six, three-two.

Don: You gotta be kidding.

Nat: Well, now what do we do?

There’s nothing here,

just desert.

Gilda: This can’t be right.

Thoma: It’s right, all right!

Don: It’s a whole lot

of nothing.

Ray: You see any people?

Like a town or camp?

Nat: No.

There’s no one out there.

Alicia: Mr. Minerva said

he’d be here, but he’s not!

Christie: How come?!

Jemima: We came

all this way for nothing.

( Yvette sighs )

- ( boys wailing )

- Alicia: That liar!

Christie: He said he’d be here!

Where is he?!

Alicia: He said for us

to come here and see him!

Children: That’s why we’re here!

( panting )

Ray: Are you guys done yet?

- All: Yeah.

- Ray: Good.

Then calm down. It’s for

situations just like this one

that we have the pen.

Do you see that?

I wasn’t able to get

to this window before.

- It kept giving me an error.

- Gilda: What does that mean?

Ray: It means the pen won’t

let us access the next clue

unless we’re

at a specific location.

Emma: That’s why

we were told to go here,

to unlock the next clue!

( pages flutter )

Don: Page , line ...

( gasps ) "History"!

Ray: Here goes nothing.

"History."

Both: Come on!

( display crackles )

Both: There it is!

Jemima: What kind

of clue is that?

- Ray: A bunker.

- ( children murmur )

Ray: And it says

there’s a trapdoor.

Over there.

Check on the ground!

( stone scraping )

Emma: Over here, Ray!

I think I found it!

Ray: That’s it.

( grunting )

Alicia: There was

something here!

Christie:

Mr. Minerva wasn’t lying!

Thoma: You think he’s down here?

Emma: Mm-hmm.

( footsteps echoing )

( gasps )

( breathes deeply )

( children murmuring )

( hinges creak )

( Emma gasps )

Please work.

Children: Lights!

( overlapping chatter,

laughter )

Emma: Looks like

we’re the only ones here.

Ray: Someone was here before us.

Maybe they were escapees, too.

Rossi: Look.

It’s showing us the outside.

Don: This is perfect!

With all these monitors,

we’ll know right away

if a search party or demons

are lurking out there!

Ray: Hey, Emma.

Emma: A radio!

( chuckles )

Gilda: Look.

Emma: A letter.

Gilda: Mm-hmm.

"Congratulations

on your arrival.

I’m sorry I can’t be there

to greet you now.

However,

make yourselves at home."

( gasps )

Signed, "William..."

Children: Minerva!

Emma: You see that, guys?

I knew he had a good reason

for leading us here.

He made this bunker

for kids just like us

escaping from their houses.

- Nat: Yeah.

- ( both giggle )

Ray: All right.

Let’s check this place out

top to bottom.

Lannion: Wow! A full-on kitchen!

- ( laughs )

- Thoma: Cool!

( Yvette laughs )

Thoma: Ah, and it’s

got everything we need

to do some real cookin’!

Mark: I wanna cook something!

Yvette: Yeah, me, too!

Children: Wow! It’s a bath!

Both: Yay!

Gilda: Hold it! That can wait.

- ( children gasping )

- ( stomach growls )

- ( children moan )

- Don: Jeez.

I’m so hungry!

Both: I wanna have some dinner!

Jemima: Huh? What is this?

Don: I think it’s a garden.

( Alicia gasps )

Lannion: We can plant

a bunch of seeds

and grow fruits and veggies!

Alicia: Oh, yes!

Christie: Whoa.

Look at all these books!

Anna: It’s like

a teeny, tiny library.

Rossi: This looks like

the biggest room here.

Anna: Mm-hmm.

It’s big enough

for us all to sleep in.

Nat: Mind if I play?

( children laugh )

( playing lively piano tune )

( Dominic chuckles )

- Plink!

- ( Nat gasps )

- ( Dominic laughs )

- ( grinding )

I didn’t do that!

( grinding stops )

Anna: It’s a secret room!

Dominic: It’s stuffy.

Rossi: It’s dark

and scary down here.

Gilda: Even so, it looks like

a perfect place

to use for storage.

( Dominic grunts )

( Christie echoing )

Would you look at that?

Another passageway!

Ray: Not bad. We have shelter,

canned food, clean water,

and electricity.

Emma: And it’s all

thanks to Mr. Minerva.

Dominic: Hey, Emma.

If we’re done, can we go?

Emma: "Go"? Go where?

Gilda: Yes, you can.

You deserve it.

Go on now, and enjoy yourselves.

Both: Yay!

Lannion: Ahh!

That’s what I’m talkin’ about.

Oh, yeah. A hot shower,

then a hot bath.

Boys: Hot water!

( chuckling )

Lannion: So good.

( children sigh )

This is heaven.

( Dominic sighs ) I haven’t had

a hot bath this good

in ten years.

Lannion: Me, neither.

Nat: Aw, please. None of us have

even been alive for ten years.

Rossi: Huh? That’s weird.

I’m crying.

But, like...

Sonju and Mujika saved us,

and it was easy enough

getting here, but...

I can’t stop crying.

( sniffles ) It’s so weird.

Don: Nah, buddy, it’s not weird.

- ( grunts )

- ( boys wince )

( coughing )

You’re just glad we escaped

and happy we’re here.

You get it? Those are

happy tears. That’s all.

Rossi: Yeah!

( both chuckle )

All: Thank you for the food!

Ray: This bunker

has everything we need.

It’s better than I hoped for.

It has an underground well

for fresh water.

It gets its power

from geothermal energy

and organic waste.

It’s even got

a separate generator

that runs on regular fuel

if we need it.

Don: Wait.

What’s organic waste?

Rossi: Huh?

Don: Poop power?!

You’re kidding!

Gilda: Don, Ray,

people are eating!

Ray: I didn’t say, "Poop."

I said, "Compost."

Don: Just tryin’ to get a laugh.

Emma: The food

we found in the pantry

isn’t gonna last forever,

but I did see animals outside.

We can hunt for meat,

and we also have the dry food

we brought from the house.

And we can plant

those seeds Mujika gave us.

This place is all right.

We can live here.

Ray: Yeah. We couldn’t have

asked for a better hideout.

It’s safe and clean,

and with our little group,

we can live here

for as long as we need to.

We can survive.

Emma: Mm-hmm.

( Nat playing piano )

Emma: We’re starting over

in our new home.

Ray: Mm-hmm.

( clock ticking )

Thoma: What’s that thing?

Ray: A radio. I found it

back in the monitor room,

and with this thing,

we can keep tabs on the house.

( all gasp )

Emma: You remember, guys?

There was

a certain time at night

when we couldn’t

find Mom anywhere.

She’d just disappear.

Children: Hmm...

Gilda: What time was that again?

That’s right! It was at : !

Ray: All right. Here goes.

( static crackling )

( Don moans )

( Anna whimpers )

( Nat swallows )

( static continues )

Woman: Come in, Headquarters.

Come in.

- ( Ray gasps )

- Anna: You got it working!

Woman: This is

in Plant One.

January .

Everything is fine.

Woman : Plant Four here.

January . Everything is fine.

( children chatter, laugh )

Woman : End transmission.

Over and out.

Don: Well, that sucks.

We didn’t find out a thing.

Ray: We know

which frequency they’re on.

All we have to do now

is listen in

every night at this time,

and eventually

we’ll find out

what’s going on at the house.

- Anna: Mm-hmm.

- ( Gilda grunts )

( breeze blowing )

Don: Poor kids.

I hope they’re doing okay.

( both sigh )

Emma: They are. I’m sure of it.

But not for long.

We have to hurry

and get them out.

Ray: Yeah.

Lannion:

Can’t catch me, slowpoke!

- Thoma: Wanna bet?!

- ( both laugh )

Don: Emma, Ray,

you got a second?

Emma: Why? Is something wrong?

Huh?

That’s a weird keyhole.

( Alicia gasps )

Mr. Minerva’s owl!

Don: The code says "pen."

( boys laugh )

Lannion: Try and catch us, Anna!

Thoma: We’ll lose her

at the next hallway.

( both laugh )

Anna: Yvette?

Lannion: Huh?

( Thoma gasps )

Anna: Hey, Yvette, you okay?

( gasps )

( lock clicks )

Don: You unlocked it!

( Anna gasping )

( latch clicks )

( hinges squeak )

( all breathing heavily )

Anna: Is this...

a joke?

- ( telephone rings )

- ( all gasp )

- ( chair clatters )

- ( ring )

Man: This is William Minerva.

( Emma gasps )
