This is Ted Mayfield
at the Tahlequah, Oklahoma —

At the th
World Parachuting Championships.

We're right now into our ninth day
of competition...

and the competition
is very, very keen.

We'd like to tell you a small story
about sport parachuting.

We was teaching a man to jump
here about five years ago...

and during the entire program
was such an individual and everything...

that the instructors actually refused
to jump with him anymore or work with him.

So we finally got him ready to go
after about five hours of work.

And as we put him into the airplane,
his eyes started getting quite large.

As we climbed out to our altitude, he'd become
one of the individuals that we all are.

As we opened the door,
by this time he was completely petrified.

And as I told him to put his feet out
he said, "Who? Me? Not me."

I said, "The pilot's not goin' to,
and I'm not going to. You're going to."

We finally got him out on the step and at
the command of "Go," he yelled back, "No!"

We yelled a command of "Go."
He yelled back, "No!"

I hit him on the fingers
as hard as I could with my hand...

and at this time made him let go.

He let go of the strut of the airplane
but grabbed the step as he went by.

So, being the cautious person that I am,
I reached out with my foot...

and very gently stomped on his fingers.

When we got down, I asked him,
"How was the jump?"

He said, "That was one of
the greatest feelings of my life...

but it sure makes your fingers sore."

And I think, to your program and to the
th World Parachuting Championships...

there's only one tribute
that I could ever see worth giving...

and that is a toast
to each of you and to your film.
