Dad, can I come out

of my room now?

It looks to me like

you're already out.

I mean, for good.

Nicholas, I told you

that you were not allowed

to leave your room

until you explain to me

why you were looking

in my desk.

'You know the rules,

no one is allowed'

'at my desk without

my permission.'

Dad, it's totally

boring in my room.

Nicholas..

All you have to do

is to tell me why.

Now, you shouldn't be

afraid to communicate.

If you explain to me why,

and it's a good reason

I'll understand.

- Really?

- Really.

Well, the reason I was looking

in your desk is because

I needed a good hiding place.

Oh. But why is my desk

a good hiding place?

Because the bottom drawer

is the bill drawer.

And you never look in there

till the end of the month.

Oh...that's very clever.

- Thanks.

- 'You see?'

Now, you communicated with me,

you explained to me why

and I thought it

was very clever.

'Doesn't that work out nicely?'

- Yeah.

- 'Oh, uh, Nicholas..'

Uh, what did you

hide in my desk?

[instrumental music]

Nicholas?

Well..

[sighs]

"Man's Man Monthly?"

Nicholas, get to your room!

But, dad, you said if we--

Oh, dad, I'm glad

I ran into you.

I've got a question.

Yeah? Fire away.

Well, can I go over to

my friend Jackson's house

tomorrow after school?

Why, certainly, Nicholas.

But listen, you don't

have to ask permission

to go visit a classmate.

Yeah, well, I know.

But Jackson is

pretty far away.

Oh, really?

Where does he live?

Granby Avenue is not

exactly battle zone.

Still, it's not

the safest part of town.

Nicholas is only going

there for the afternoon.

Well, well, why can't

Jackson come here?

What difference

does it make?

You saw Nicholas

the other day?

This might be real

good for him.

I just don't feel

right about it.

About what?

About Nicholas going

to visit Jackson?

Or your sudden surge

of overprotectiveness?

Abby, I'm not prejudiced.

I know that.

And it's okay how

you feel, Tom.

It's an understandable

reaction.

But, but, Nicholas should

have a wide range

of friends and experiences.

Yeah, I suppose.

It's a big world out there,

and I guess Nicholas should see

as much of it as he can.

So should all of us.

[instrumental music]

[music continues]

[whispering]

David?

[dramatic music]

- Good morning.

- Good morning.

- Coffee?

- Please.

Oh, thanks.

So, uh, what time did you

finally pull in last night?

I don't know. We sort of

lost track of the time.

It must've been pretty late.

- Were you worried?

- No, no. Of course not.

Are you sure? I mean,

you look a little concerned.

I might be a little concerned.

But that's natural when

a man's wife comes in

in the middle of the night.

Don't you believe

I was working?

Would you like

to see my notes?

No! No.

Well, what is it?

Don't you trust me?

Of course I trust you.

Have a good day at work.

(Nicholas)

'You've got a basket

in your backyard?'

You kidding? I ain't

even got a backyard.

Oh.

It must be great.

I mean, being on your

own and everything.

You can do whatever you want.

Yeah. Well, there

isn't much to do.

- Where do you play?

- All over the place.

The churchyard,

the playground.

Hey, we can go where my

brother plays basketball.

He's probably there now.

We can watch him.

Okay, let's go.

Query, if we

present the case

the sort of the plight

the victimized individual

versus the faceless

conglomerate.

Then how do we counter

Nacelle's testimony

regarding her conversation

with O'Connor?

I don't know. How do we counter

Nacelle's testimony?

We tell him

he's full of baloney

and we stick shaving cream

down his pants.

[laughing]

You are crazy!

Do you know that?

Yep.

I don't know how I'd get through

all this work without you.

I mean, it's not half as bad

is pretty good.

I'll catch you guys later.

Hey, Jackson,

what's up, man?

- Who's your friend?

- Nicholas.

What do you say, Nicholas?

I'm Darren.

- You play ball?

- A little bit.

Well, let's see some

of your moves.

- Okay.

- Come on.

Quick time!

What do you say we grab

us a couple of beers, huh?

No, no. Thanks anyway, man.

Hey, Davey, Davey.

Can I tell you something?

You can't just sit

here feeling

sorry for yourself.

You know what I mean?

Fred, I got a lot of paperwork

I gotta get out of the way.

Sure, I understand.

But can I tell you something?

A man's intuition tells me this

thing between you and your wife

is still eating you up

on your good side, am I right?

No, no, no. She's just working

on a case with a total jerk.

Ah, and she says they're

just platonic friends?

Yeah.

Can I tell you something?

When it's a single guy

and a good-looking woman

there's no such thing as

a platonic relationship.

'Now if I were you, old buddy,

I would clear the air but fast.'

I'd nip this thing

in the bud right now

before it's too late, hm.

Okay, next basket wins.

Alright, let's go.

Alright, look at that!

White Magic, man.

Here you go!

- Alright!

- Alright! Yeah!

- Way to go, Magic!

- Nice sh*t!

- Nice pass.

- Thanks!

Hey, thanks for the game, guys.

Hey, do you think we can get a

game going like this tomorrow?

Yeah, we could. But I'd

rather go to your place.

You've been here. I wanna

see where you live.

But there's nothing

good to do there.

There's gotta

be something.

- Well, if you really want to.

- I do!

I'll have my mom drive me off

right after lunch.

She only works half

a day on Saturdays.

Okay.

(Tommy)

Wait a minute, Elizabeth.

What do you want?

Where are you going?

Out.

- With Ernie?

- Yes.

Dressed like that?

What's wrong with

the way I'm dressed?

Nothing if this is

something special.

It isn't, is it?

Well, any night

can be special

if you're with

the right person.

Elizabeth, let's be

realistic about this.

This is Ernie we're

talking about.

I like Ernie.

Tommy, what is wrong with you?

I'm just trying to save you

from serious embarrassment.

- That's all.

- 'What do you mean?'

Well, you've seen

the way he dresses.

And I wanna tell you,

he doesn't change

his clothes before a date.

I don't believe that.

I tried to warn you.

You two are gonna look like

the princess and the slob.

[doorbell rings]

Dad, Elizabeth isn't home yet.

So?

So it's after midnight!

So? She's not on

a curfew anymore.

And if I remember correctly

you were very much in

favor of me dropping it.

Well, what do I know?

I'm just a kid.

Besides, there are

certain things

I didn't take into

consideration.

Like what?

Like some guys

can get pretty crazy

on their first date

in months.

No. But she and Jack have been

going together for a long time.

She's not out with

Jack tonight.

'They split up.'

Oh, well, who is she out with?

Ernie!

Ernie?

It's after midnight!

[car approaches]

David, you still up?

Oh, yeah, I, I started this book

and I couldn't put it down.

What time is it?

It must be pretty late.

Yeah. I'm really tired.

I gotta get some sleep.

Ah, wait a minute.

As long as we're

both up, uh..

why don't we have

a little talk?

Oh, can't it wait

till morning?

Every time I try to talk

to you, Barry calls.

David, we've been very busy.

Busy? You two practically

live together!

He sees more of you than I do!

I'm going to sleep.

Oh, then maybe you prefer

spending more time with Barry

than you do with me.

How many times do I have

to tell you, David

there is absolutely nothing

going on between me and Barry.

I never said there was.

Why are you getting

so defensive?

I'm not getting defensive.

And you're acting like

a jealous husband!

[dramatic music]

She's defensive.

[instrumental music]

Abby, isn't dad coming down

for breakfast?

Oh, I think, he's sleeping in.

He had a real late night.

Yeah, he and Tommy were

waiting up for Elizabeth.

You know, Tommy is getting

as overprotective as dad.

- Yeah?

- It must be heredity I think.

Nicholas, what time

is Jackson coming over?

Uh, he should be

over around noon.

That gives me three

hours to figure out

what we're gonna do all day.

Hey, Nicholas, there's

plenty you two can do.

Oh, if we were over

at Jackson's house.

- You had a good time, huh?

- 'It was great!'

We played basketball

with the big guys.

And they called me White Magic.

He even lives near

a pinball machine!

Well, I'm sure if you

try hard enough

you'll think of

something to do.

Yeah, well, we can

always watch TV.

I think you should try harder.

I'm gonna take this cup of

coffee up to your dad.

- Good morning.

- 'Hi.'

Ah, can I talk to you

for a minute?

Sure. Should we go

in the study?

- Sure.

- Okay.

- You want some coffee?

- I'd love some.

- Okay.

- Thanks.

It's good coffee.

Oh, yeah. It's good.

You wanted to talk to me?

[sighs]

It's such a mess.

What is? What?

Lately I've been working a lot

with one of the associates,

Barry Coffman.

And it's getting David

pretty upset.

That doesn't sound like David.

Yeah, I know.

He won't say it

in so many words

but he thinks we're

having an affair.

So you just tell David

nothing is going on.

Well...it's not exactly

the whole truth anymore.

Oh.

'Last night,

all of a sudden'

Barry started coming on to me.

I've been working with this guy

for months and he'd never.

But he did, and you didn't

tell David, right?

How could I?

It would only validate

David's suspicions.

He'd get upset, angry and

he has nothing to worry about.

Nothing is going to happen.

I don't want anything to happen.

Well, maybe you should

tell that to David.

I think he'll understand

and trust you enough

not to worry.

But, Abby, what if he doesn't?

I have to work with Barry

until this case is over.

I owe my complete attention

to my job as a professional.

I still think you

should tell him.

I just can't now, Abby.

Not until this case is over.

Maybe you could think

about it a little more.

(Nicholas)

Hey, Tommy.

This is my brother, Tommy.

Tommy, this is Jackson.

- Hi.

- Hi. Ugh, sorry.

What's wrong?

You know, the engine's missing.

Looks like it's still

there to me.

'Hey, have you checked

the points on the condenser?'

Yeah, they're fine.

You know about cars?

Sure. I read lots of

books about 'em.

Hey, if you like cars, have

Nicholas show you Abby's MG.

You got a MG?

It's just an old one.

That's the best kind.

Come on, let's see!

Hey, how's it going,

Bradford?

Ernie, do you realize

what time you brought

Elizabeth home last night?

We kinda got involved.

What's that supposed to mean?

Just that we had a great time.

That's all.

How great?

Well, first, we went

to a movie.

- Indoor?

- Drive-in.

I don't wanna hear about it.

But the movie

was pretty boring.

- So, we just--

- Ernie!

Well, you haven't heard

the best part.

That's disgusting!

It is? What is?

I don't wanna talk about it.

What's your problem, Bradford?

Ernie, she is my

youngest sister.

She's just a kid.

She's older than I am.

Right. So, why would she

have any interest in you?

I don't know, Bradford, but

you better get used to it

because I'm taking her

out again tonight.

If my mom had a car like this

I'd make her take me

every place in it.

- You would?

- Yeah.

I'd pretend I was in some

kind of race or something.

Or maybe I'd be some

rich dude who

likes to drive around

in old cars

because I've got

a lot of class.

Well, Abby drives this car

because it's the only

one she's got.

Do you wanna go

watch some TV now?

What for? I like it out here.

Let's just sit and look.

At what?

The grass, the trees.

You know, maybe someday we could

buy a big ranch together.

In Texas.

It'll have a house

like yours

and big trees like

you got out here.

Yeah. But we need a lot more

land for the horses.

Yeah, and a big pond

for ducks.

We need ducks?

Sure! For the eggs.

Well, why don't we just

get some chickens?

Because ducks are

better-looking.

And if you put

a chicken in a pond

it'd just sink.

[chuckles]

If this is a garage

how come there ain't

no cars in it?

No room, too much junk.

Are these your dad's tools?

Yeah, but the only

time they get used

is when people borrow them.

Does he let you use them?

- Sure?

- What do you make?

Well, my dad and I built

a coaster car once.

But that was when

I was a little kid.

Anything else?

Nah.

Boy, if I had tools like these

I'd build all sorts of things.

You think your father

will help us

build something later on?

I guess so.

You wanna go watch

some TV now?

Heck no!

Let's go climb that big tree

in your yard.

Okay.

Sorry.

Look, Barry, I'd like

to clear the air

about what happened.

[telephone ringing]

- Hello.

- 'Hi.'

David.

- Bad timing?

- 'No.'

So, what's up?

I thought if you're going

to be through early tonight

we could do something.

'Oh, sounds great.'

Good, what time?

Well, I don't know exactly

how late I'll be working.

- 'Oh.'

- But it shouldn't be too late.

Right, uh, look, I'll

call you later

and see how you're

doing, okay?

Okay. David?

'What?'

I love you.

Oh, hello.

- Are you Nicholas' dad?

- Yes, I am.

Oh, you must be Jackson.

- Right.

- How are ya?

I read you in

the newspaper sometimes.

Oh, well, it's nice to know that

I reach the younger audience.

You write some smart things.

Oh, thanks, that's

nice of you to say.

Dad, can Jackson

sleep over tonight?

Oh, I guess so,

I don't think Tommy

will mind sleeping

on the screen porch.

Has anybody seen my notebook?

Oh, yeah, I have it.

It's in the study.

Ah, this is Nicholas'

friend, Jackson.

- Hi, Jackson, nice to meet you.

- And guess what?

He's going to spend

the night with us.

- Oh, that's great.

- Yeah.

Well, I'll show you

where the book is.

- Have a good time now.

- Bye.

Nicholas..

your mom is beautiful!

She's pretty enough

to be a movie star.

[instrumental music]

Let me ask you a question.

You ever had a brain scan?

Look, she told me

she loved me.

And I believe her.

Can I tell you something?

You are in a lot of trouble.

What do you think she did

after she hung up, huh?

Went back to work, I guess.

Oh, man, this is great.

I love it.

The man's wife is

having a major affair

and he thinks his

gidget goes to court.

Oh, come on, how could

she be having an affair?

[sighs]

What planet are you from?

She's been working with

this guy for months, right?

Now all of a sudden, they're

working late almost every night?

And when you called her on it,

she got defensive?

No, no, I wouldn't

be concerned.

I don't know.

Let me tell you something.

When you start noticing an extra

person around the house

you know, just kind of

lounging around in his pajamas

give me a call, okay?

I hope you figure it out.

[sighs]

Hi.

Hi.

Is your friend coming back?

No, sit down.

Thanks.

Can I buy you a drink?

Thanks, uh, but I gotta

make a phone call.

Too bad.

[telephone ringing]

Good evening,

Goodman, Sax and Tweedy.

Yes, uh, Janet Bradford, please.

I'm sorry, sir,

but she and Mr. Coffman

left quite

some time ago.

I see.

Would you care

leave a message?

Uh...no, thanks.

[ringing]

[dramatic music]

Hi.

Hello.

About that drink..

[dramatic music]

[instrumental music]

Thank you.

Barry, this is absurd.

What do you want me to say?

I made a play for you,

and you sh*t me down.

But, Janet, you acted

so friendly.

So close to me.

I thought you wanted me

to make a move.

I do feel close

to you, Barry.

But as a friend.

You know the whole time

that I was writing that brief

all I could think

about was you.

I'm very sorry

if I mislead you.

I like you very much.

But I love my husband.

Hey, I understand.

Well, what do you think?

Can we still work together?

Well, I hope so,

or our client

is out of luck.

'Heh, that's for sure.'

Oh no, I forgot,

David was supposed

to call me at the office.

I gotta get back.

Oh, uh, why don't you

just call him?

Good thinking.

See, we still work

well together.

Elizabeth, what's

wrong with you?

Uh...nothing.

Then why're you

going out with Ernie?

Why shouldn't I?

Well, because..

Because it's Ernie!

You don't approve?

He's your best friend.

I know that.

I just wanna know

what you two

do when you go out.

Hasn't Ernie told you?

Well, he started to,

but I made him stop.

Why?

Because if it's anything like

what he's done with

other girls on dates

I might have decked him.

Tommy..

We're just friends.

I'm still in love

with Jack.

Yeah, but does Ernie know

that you two are just friends?

I think so, why would

he think anything else?

I'm not sure, but I gotta

feeling he does.

Well..

This is where I live.

You know that's funny, ah..

this is the street where

I used to live before I, uh..

Before what?

Before I moved. Heh.

I really enjoyed

our talk tonight.

Hearing about your

travels and all.

Yeah, me too, uh..

I enjoyed talking to you.

Well, why don't you, uh..

come up to my apartment

and I can fix some coffee

or something?

I don't think so.

Oh, okay.

'No, it's not that

you're not attractive.'

You are.

It's..

It's just that I'm married.

And, ah, I think

I better go home.

[engine revving]

(Jackson)

'Nicholas, are you asleep?'

(Nicholas)

'No.'

(Jackson)

'Good, neither am I.'

Whatcha thinking about?

I don't know.

About what a good time

I had today.

It was pretty decent.

You wanna sleep over

tomorrow night too?

No, thanks.

It's nice here.

But I gets kinda

quiet at night.

What do you mean?

'Well, where I live,

sometimes at night'

all the grownups sit

outside on the steps

or stand by the building

and talk.

They have a good time

laughing and telling stories.

I can't wait till

I'm grown up

so I can be out there with them.

I thought you wanted

to live in a house

like this when you grew up.

Yeah, this is a great house.

But I sure miss

the neighborhood.

'Maybe you can have

a house like this there.'

Maybe.

You ever listen

to your neighbors

talk at night, Nicholas?

We don't have many neighbors.

But sometimes my big brother

his wife and my brother-in-law

comes over for dinner.

After we're done eating,

nobody gets up.

They all just sit around

and talk.

It's pretty neat,

even better than TV.

You know when I

like television?

When I can't sleep because

I have earache or something.

My mom lets me sit with her

in a big chair and watch

"The Late Show."

The movies stink. But it's just

fun to watch with my mom.

Well, my mom d*ed.

But Abby's really great.

I mean, when she talks to you

it's not like she's

talking to a kid.

'She really listens.'

Goodnight, Jackson.

Goodnight, Nicholas.

David, hi.

Guess what?

I've got tomorrow off.

Isn't Barry gonna miss you?

Oh, come on, David.

Now, just out of curiosity

when did you get home tonight?

I've been home a while.

- Where've you been?

- Doesn't matter.

Where were you when I

called at the office?

I was with Barry.

After you told me

we'd go out tonight?

Will you calm down?

You were right.

Barry did have more than

platonic feelings for me.

Oh, so he did make

a pass at you?

Nothing happened.

But I was afraid to tell you.

You were acting so paranoid.

No, in other words,

you lied to me.

No, I didn't.

Oh brother, who knows what else

you lied to me about.

I said nothing happened!

And nothing will.

Oh, you're right

nothing's going to happen

because you're not

going to see Barry again.

- What?

- You heard me.

Goodman, Sax and Tweedy

are going to have

to get themselves

another girl.

David, take a minute.

Think about what

you're saying.

We're talking about

my career.

No, I'm talking

about our marriage!

Or don't you care

about that anymore?

[dramatic music]

[instrumental music]

Hey, Jackson.

You're up pretty early.

What's the matter?

Wasn't my bed comfortable?

It was okay. I'm just

waiting for my mom.

Oh, what time she

supposed to pick you up?

:.

It's only o'clock.

You're pretty early.

I wanna be ready.

Oh, well, okay, we'll

catch you later, huh?

But, David, if you

felt that way

why didn't you say

something to Janet?

I don't know, dad.

I mean, there's gonna be

jealousy in any marriage.

Especially with

working newly-weds.

But you don't run into a bar

and pick up a girl

when you feel threatened.

Dad, we just had

a couple of drinks.

I guess I was...trying

to get even.

I was hurt.

Yeah, but that's

not the answer.

It never is.

Marriage is based

on trust.

- Mutual trust.

- I know.

I, I blew the whole thing

out of proportion.

Nah.

You and Janet just

haven't communicated.

You have to be open enough

to tell each other anything.

Honest enough to know

when you're upset.

And strong enough to know that

when you do make a mistake..

...you admit it.

[horn blares]

What's up, Bradford?

Well, I just, uh..

wanted to talk

to you, that's all.

Well, if you're looking

to get some kind of charge

by telling me Elizabeth is back

with Jack, you're out of luck.

She already called me.

No, I just wanted

to apologize.

I was really acting crazy

about you seeing Elizabeth.

I don't know what got into me.

It's just that there's something

weird about my sister

seeing one of my friends.

My best friend.

It's okay.

I'd probably feel the same way

if you went out with my sister.

You don't have a sister!

I mean, if I did.

'It was kinda weird

for me too.'

I mean, half the fun

of dating is

telling your friends

what happened.

I really wanted to tell you

when Elizabeth and I were--

Ernie!

I don't wanna talk about it.

Exactly.

Let's forget I ever

took her out.

That's a good idea.

- Hey, you wanna go by school?

- What for?

The girls field hockey team is

having a special practice.

I heard that the Keydash

twins are suiting up.

- The Keydash twins?

- In the flesh!

[engine revs]

I had a real good time here.

I had a real good time

at your place.

I guess we're both

pretty lucky.

There's my mom.

Dad! Abby!

Hi, mom.

Jackson..

Come and say hi

to Nicholas.

Okay.

Nicholas, this is my mom.

- Hi, Nicholas.

- Hi.

Oh, mom, this is

Mr. and Mrs. Bradford.

- Hi.

- Nice to meet you.

Yes, nice to meet you too.

'Thank you.'

Jackson is very special.

Yeah, I think he missed you

a lot though.

You missed your mom?

Nah.

Well, thanks for

having Jackson over.

- It was our pleasure.

- Yeah.

Thanks for having Nicholas.

Well, I hope to see

you again sometimes.

- Yeah, bye.

- Bye-bye.

(Jackson)

See you.

How come we never build

anything together anymore?

Oh, well, I didn't think

you liked to.

Well, I like to.

Do you think maybe

we can start

on something

this afternoon?

Sure.

Good. You know

something, Abby?

You're good-looking

enough to be a movie star.

- Oh, ho-ho.

- Well, thank you, Nicholas.

You're welcome.

- Boy, oh boy!

- What was that?

What got into Nicholas

all of a sudden?

Oh, I don't know,

I think he just

got the chance to see

all that he has

through someone

else's eyes.

I think Jackson got

the same thing.

Yeah.

[instrumental music]

- I'm sorry.

- I'm sorry too.

I was acting so stupid.

I mean, I'm usually so

level-headed and sophisticated.

No more secret insecurities

or fears between us?

Nope, everything

right out in the open.

And do you trust me?

And you know I love you?

Yep.

And I'll tell you everything

that happens to me.

- When it happens.

- Right.

Total communication.

So, you understand about

the girl at the bar?

Yup.

But don't let it

happen again.

Oh, I'll try.

But you have to understand

that some girls

find me irresistible.

I know.

[instrumental music]

You know, I haven't

been to bed yet.

I haven't slept

a winkle all night.

You know, we, uh,

working people need our rest.

Absolutely.

So what are we waiting for?

[music continues]

Anybody want a shine?

What?

Well, uh, dad

and I just finished

building this

shoe shine kit.

And I'm trying to

drum up some business.

Why don't you go test it

on your own shoes first?

Already have.

Five times.

Hey, Tommy, you want a shine?

Not now, Nicholas.

Elizabeth, can I have

a word with you?

What'd I do now?

I'd just like to ask you

a couple of questions

about you and Ernie.

Tommy, you're getting

as bad as dad.

All I wanna know is

what you guys did.

What's it to you?

Elizabeth, you're my sister.

And he's my best friend.

I just wanna know.

You better tell him, Liz.

[sighs]

Okay, Tommy, if you must know

Ernie taught me something

that no other man

has ever taught me before.

You're kidding.

What?

How to do Bullwinkle,

of course!

[laughing]

[instrumental music]

[mimicking Bullwinkle]

Hey, Rocky, watch me pull

a rabbit out of my hat!

Krrr! Nothing up the sleeve.

Oops, wrong hat.

[music continues]

That's disgusting.

[instrumental music]

[theme music]
