04x04 - Costa Rica with Dom Rocket

Post by bunniefuu »

Through my work on this
little project called "Ride,"

I've had the privilege
to travel to places

that I've always wanted
to see...

a good excuse to embed myself
in the local scene,

meet some innovative people,

and learn a bit along the way.

But the fact is,
no matter where you wander,

there's no shortcut
for assimilation,

no easy way to unlock
local nuance

and the unspoken subtleties
of everyday life.

That only comes with time.

Costa Rica is where I own a home
and go to escape.

But shuttling in and out of here
between projects,

I've always felt like a visitor
passing through.

So I'm taking this trip
to immerse myself

in the people and culture
of a country that I love.

Alright, hit it!

Here we go!

Yeah, baby.

That was crazy!

Shake and bake, baby!

Yeah, I know.

Not the first thing
that comes to mind

when you think of Costa Rica.

But I promised this guy... Go, go, go!

A quick race
before starting out.

Shake and bake!

Dom Rocket and I met
back in the ' s

while throwing back sh*ts
in sleazy New York City bars.

With a shared affinity
for raising hell,

he and I became fast friends.

Don't quit now, Norman.

Oh, son of a bitch!

I made contact.

Oh, yeah, get out of the road!

- Ohh!
- Ohh!

Messed me up, dude.

Talladega, baby.
Talladega.

I took you out.
I shaked and baked you.

You baked me, for sure.

Dom Rocket in Costa Rica.

Got the team back together.

For the last few years,
Costa Rica has been my refuge,

but spending my days here
on dirt bikes and sunny beaches,

I'm still just
an outsider looking in.

So this visit, I'm seeking out
a more authentic way of life.

The Republic of Costa
Rica, a working democracy.

Costa Rica is a happy nation

of small farms
owned by individual farmers.

Costa Rican landscape
is a tropical country.

We have lots of beaches,
mountains, volcanoes.

We have . %
of the world's biodiversity.

We were the first country in
the world to abolish the army.

Our education is free
in Costa Rica.

We are known
for the friendliness

of the people and pura vida.

Pura vida is like saying
in English, "pure life."

It's a term that is based
in peace, democracy,

sharing with friends,
sharing with neighbors.

That's the heart of pura vida.

Over the next
three days, we'll depart

the capital city of San José
and venture kilometers

into the forest
and coffee fields of Monteverde.

After a quick stop in Pitahaya,
we'll take a -kilometer ride

down the coast
into the beach town of Jaco.

It's my chance to start becoming
a part of this place,

and an opportunity to catch up
with my long-lost friend.

You want to get some
breakfast? Yeah, man, let's do it.

Thanks for doing this, man.
Thank you for having me, bro.

I mean, first time I met you,
you had a mohawk.

You know what I mean?
We started up a conversation.

I was in a punk band,
and I had a mohawk.

And I know for a decade
at that time,

me and you probably saw
each other almost every day.

All day, every day. Yeah. Every day.

You know, you're
like my brother. Yeah, bro.

And we used to fight
like brothers. Oh, yeah, I know.

Oh, yeah.

Throw each other
through tables and stuff.

Mm-hmm.
We did that at Piano's bar.

We did it several places,
as well.

And we changed the subject
real quick.

You were my best man,
my ring bearer.

Yeah, that's right. I was trying
not to lose the ring.

I was terrified. You were.

Yeah. You were so nervous.

I know I'm gonna lose it.
I'm gonna lose it.

Young, wild, and free.

I tell my friends, like, Dom's,
like, a real friend of mine.

He's never seen the show.
I tried to watch it once,

and I was like, "This is weird
seeing Norman like..."

Being all redneck? You were like...

Yeah, totally.
Who's that redneck?

That's not Norman. Who's that dude? Yeah.

You remember whenever we used
to be able to hang out together,

and nobody would come up to you?

Yeah, those were the days, yeah.

You remember those days? For sure, yeah.

And I remember when you started
"The Walking Dead,"

and it was just, like...
Like every year,

it started to get, like,
crazier and crazier.

From that moment on, it was
like, couldn't go anywhere.

Yeah, right?

Yeah, man. So, what made
you decide on Costa Rica?

I just fell in love
with this place.

It had a...
I needed a getaway place.

I needed a place
where it wasn't so hectic,

and I could escape everything.

I kept falling in love
with this place

over and over and over again.

Right, I could do this... This
is my escape joint, yeah.

I was told, throughout history,
like, economically,

you could live off of less money

in this area more than
any other area,

and that's where
the pure life came from.

And that's the way
everybody should be living, man.

It's pura vida right there. Pura vida, man.

Yeah. Let's do this.Alright.

Good day to be alive, son.

Black Widows? How'd you come up
with the name Black Widows?

Because the Black Widow,
you know, k*ll the husband.

- Uh-huh.
- Yeah. Right.

- That is awesome.
- One, two.

- One, two, three.
- It looks so badass.

Do you like it? Yeah.

If I saw you rolling down
the street with that on,

I wouldn't mess with you.

Tonight, we park
our bikes in Puntarenas...

Got it, we got it.

Because tomorrow
brings new plans...

A date with the Black Widows
to scope out a motorcycle rally

that has this entire town wired.

See you tomorrow.

Have fun, guys.

What is that? That's a tapir.

That's the biggest mammal
of Latin America.

Wow. Is that its penis,
that thing right there?

Yeah. What a crazy-looking penis.

Looks like a cow penis.

I'm just so impressed.

I told you,
they are related to horses.

You can enter here. Just pour it in there?

Lookit. His penis,
like, got way bigger.

He's about to step on his penis.

I mean, it's so big. You're in shock.

How do I not focus on it?

It's right there.
It's gigantic.

Okay, well,
maybe let's talk about it.

Why is it so long?
Simply because

when they go on the female,
they can't touch,

so they have to have
a really big penis

to enter in the vag*na.

I guess you know
which is the male?

Yeah, no mistaking the male
on that one.

As the sun beats down
on day three,

Puntarenas has the look
and feel of a surfer's paradise,

except today, I've been told the
bikes will outnumber the boards.

Good morning, Shavie.

Orale, vato.

We're going on a ride, homes.

Puntarenas.

Look at that ocean.

Wow, it feels so good.

Oh, this guy
coming up behind me.

Oh, oh.
On the side of you.

Yeah, what's up, man?

Like, "I got to do this
for the 'Gram."

We're meeting back
with our friends from the bar

to check out a motorcycle rally

that we've heard
attracts aficionado

from all across Central America.

I wonder if this is just
a get-together.

Whoa, man.
Check this out.

Wow. Did you think
it was gonna be this big?

No, I didn't think it was
gonna be this big.

Unh-unh.
Wow.

Look how far back it goes.

I like that it's, like,
all different bikes, you know?

Got sport bikes,
got off-road bikes.

Got some Harleys. There's a lot going on.

I don't know where to look. Yeah, I know.

Well, we made it.

Dude, this is crazy here.

Yeah, hey, what's up?
How's it going? Good morning.

Good to see you again.
Good morning.

Good to see you.

Wow, this is a big rally.

I didn't realize
how big this was.

- Hey, Norman!
- Yeah, what's up, man?

Yeah!

The convention in Costa Rica
has been running for years.

And it's to join all
the motorcycle clubs

in all the area
from Mexico to Panama.

First time, it was
motorcycles,

and now it's , .

There's vendors. There's party.
There's concerts.

Nobody pays anything
in the convention.

It's totally free.

So, that's a nice event. A rodeo?

Yeah. And with the rodeo, like,

is it a full rodeo
with, like, bulls and stuff?

No, no, no.
It's just for with the bikes.

Oh, a bike rodeo.

What do you do in a bike rodeo?

Is that the only thing?

Oh, he made it,
he made it, he made it.

Ah, he knocked a cone over.

That would be kind of penalized.

Oh, okay.
He's penalized, yeah.

- Wow, dude.
- Watch out.

Whip it, whip it.

Oh, nope. Oh. Yeah.
That's gonna be a drag, yeah.

Whoa, look at... Look at that.

Big, old bars
on there like that?

He doesn't mess around.

I didn't even know
you could do that

with a bike like that.

- That's Loco?
- He's good.

- I mean, look at him.
- He's real good.

Wow. Man.
That guy is whipping that bike.

I got to say,
Loco might be my fave.

I mean, how can you
not like a guy named Loco?

You know, that's who
you want on your side.

Cheers, guys. Cheers.Cheers.
Pura vida. Thank you.

Pura vida.

Oh, that's so good.

I totally want to eat
this coconut.

Mmm. Mmm. Good.

Who's the favorite here,
that guy back there?

Mmm.

Ohh! Dude.

I just broke a tooth.

Wow! Holy sh*t.

You see he broke his tooth
biting into a coconut,

just broke it off.

We have a story about me trying
to cut a tooth out of my mouth.

Yeah, it's gnarly. It's pretty gnarly.

It's literally...
It's a rated-R movie.

Yeah. It was a bow Kn*fe
and a bottle of whiskey.

Gnarly, gnarly, gnarly, gnarly.

That's one reason
I love this dude.

He just shrugs it off.

Dom's like a bull,
albeit a bull in a china shop.

That said, we should probably
get out of here

and find a way
to fix this tooth.

It needs a certain glue,

I think that glue you have
to mix with water or something,

and it becomes a paste,
and you glue it back in.

Are you... Are you...
Do you have the glue?

- No.
- No, they don't have it here.

- Okay.
- Gracias.

What kind of glue you need?

- It's, like...
- It's made for the...

It's a special dentist glue?

Special... Yeah.

It's, like, it bonds
the dentures together, so...

- You need some food?
- Let's do it.

See if we can find
the tooth fairy?

Maybe we can find a dentist
up here.

I like this place.
This is like a proper beach bar.

This is proper.
Yeah.

Dude, that was fun,
that little biker thingy.

That was great. Dude, I think... Loco?

Loco was awesome.
Loco was k*lling it, yeah.

I mean, I couldn't take
my eyes off him.

Yeah. I can't stop
looking at your tooth.

I know. So, what happened?

You bit into a coconut?
I bit into a coconut,

and the shell was still
attached onto the back.

Didn't know it.

Did it hurt?
No.

It hurt. You know me. You know I'm tough.

I know.
Probably didn't feel a thing.

That's papaya. That's papaya.

Papaya.Papaya.

Yes. Thank you.

This looks delicious.
Cheers.

Cheers, brother.

Talk like this.

Cheers.

Cheers.
"Costa Srica."

Hey, Norman Reedus.

Oh, my God.
This is good.

- Oh, my God.
- That's good.

I'm on the lip. Whoo.

Feels good to move.

Whee!

Whoa.

Yeah, I got one.Yeah.

Leaving Puntarenas,
it's a -kilometer ride

along the Gulf of Nicoya
into the resort city of Jaco.

For me, with the serenity
of its shorelines,

Costa Rica's always been
a beacon for relaxation.

And after our last two days,

it's something Dom and I
could use a little more of.

So, we're headed
to a beach town, right?

Yeah. This is a whole thing
going on here.

Yeah. Look at all this.

This is like
a truck-stop heaven.

Wow, look at this. This
is a postcard right here.

It is. You want to stop for a second?

Let's go check it out.

I hope we see crocodiles.

It looks like
something's sticking up.

In the water?
Yeah.

Oh, maybe it is.

Where?
Right there.

Whoa!

It is a crocodile. It is a crocodile!

Dude, two!

Wow.

There's a couple.

Whoa, there's a big one
right there.

Whoa.

Wow, look at that guy.

There's one, two, three.

I've never seen a crocodile
in Costa Rica before.

I've heard that they come down
during the rainy season.

There's another one at
the bottom down there. Look.

Yeah, it's lurking. Coming up, yeah.

Lurking.

How rad is Costa Rica?

I mean, it's amazing.

The biodiversity is strong.

The force is strong
with this country.

I'm in love.
I'm in love with Costa Rica.

Oh!

Man down. Man down.

Llevarlo suave...
In English, "to carry it soft."

But here in Costa Rica, it's
the local slang to take it easy.

And as we head
towards the ocean,

that's exactly
what Dom and I plan to do.

Whoo! Let's see what else
I can break.

I got crashed by a go-kart,

thrown off an ATV,
and broke a tooth.

And it's not over yet.

It ain't over yet.

Look at those little
mini dirt bikes.

Do you want to do it?
Come on, you want to race?

You really want to go again?

Alright, let's go.
Alright, cool, let's do this.

Got to get some revenge.

Give you a running start.

Dirt bikes.

When in Costa Rica,
call me obsessed.

The open terrain,
shifting landscapes...

Down here, I usually spend
more time off-road

than on the pavement.

So to be able to share a part
of my Costa Rica

makes this the perfect end
to a gratifying ride.

Okay, this is what we're
gonna do. So, instead of just

me and Dom, we're gonna have
the crew jump in, right?

Little family having fun
on the road in Costa Rica,

you know what I'm saying?
Pura vida!

- Whoo!
- Let's do it!

Look at this tiny little thing.

It's so cute.

Whoa!

Aah.

Whoa, dude.

Super squirrelly, dude.

Oh! Oh, my God.

Whoa, dude.

Whoo! I got some air.

Wrong way, dude.

Wrong way.

- Wrong way.
- Whoa.

Oh!

- Ohh.
- Man down. Man down.

Of course I hit it.

Ohh. Whew.

Wipeout! Wipeout.

I am tired.

Talk about squirrelly, boy.

How many teeth you got?
Oh, he's missing one.

I could just hear you going,
"I'm down. I'm down."

I'm down again.
I'm down again.

That was awesome.
That was awesome.

Let's take a shower right now.
Let's just jump in the ocean.

Can we just go, run out,
and jump in the ocean?

- Yes.
- Let's do that.

You look hysterical.

I swear, you don't look
any better.

Yeah, we're borrowing
the dirt bikes, slowing down,

and keeping close to the ground,
because after three days

of going balls to the wall
with this guy,

we're trying to get out
of this place in one piece.

Last stop, the beaches of Jaco,

a chance to put our feet up,
enjoy a cold one,

and watch the sun
sink into the ocean.

I need to lick my wounds.

- You're all b*at up.
- I b*at the out of you

in Costa Rica. Yeah, you did.

I see how you treat
your friends, man.

I'm sorry! How about it?

You know, the thing
about Costa Rica is,

like, I've only seen
one part of it.

I'd never saw the rest of it,
and it's magic.

It's just like magic everywhere.

Yeah. Look at
that sunset, bro.

Look at that.

It's amazing.

Look at that water.

It's so peaceful.

Oh, my God. Look at that.

This little kid surfing
right here, look at that.

Way better than me.

Oh, this is paradise right here.

Dude, thanks for
doing this, yeah.

It's great to have you here
doing this, man. My pleasure, brah.

Yeah. Don't get
b*at up anymore.

You b*at me up
pretty bad, though.

A little scrapes, a little
blood, a little bruises,

and a tooth got knocked
out. A little missing tooth.

Other than that,
it was a perfect trip.

Yeah. And I'd do it all again, bro.

Yeah.

I understand why
you moved here now.

You know, it's...
I mean, look at that.

I could just listen to that
right there.

Yeah, for sure.

We're all travelers,

each of us just trying
to figure out where we belong.

While I've spent a lot of time
in this country,

to fully be part of something,

you first have
to immerse yourself

in what exactly it is
you want to become a part of.

But this trip has given me
a place to start.

In Costa Rica, happiness stems
from co-existence with nature,

finding beauty
in the simplest things,

and staying present
in your surroundings.

For me, that's reconnecting
with an old friend,

one that I'll look back on
forever and just smile.

Cheers. Cheers, my brother.

I think we... we officially
have caught up with each other.

Yeah. And then some.
