[laughter]

[peppy rock music]

- Whoo-hoo!

[engine sounds slowing]

♪ ♪

Hi, everyone.

Do you like fireworks?

I do.

In fact, I love fireworks!

All those whizzes and whooshes

and bangs!

But not everybody loves them,

as you'll see

in today's story.

[train whistle blows]

All aboard

for a big adventure.

♪ ♪

[easygoing music]

[Thomas narrating]

[whistle blows]

♪ ♪

Samson

and his brake van Bradford

had come over

from the mainland

to help out

at the Blue Mountain Quarry.

- [clears throat]

According to the official

railway rulebook,

birds are not allowed

on goods cars!

♪ ♪

[mysterious music]

[whistle blows]

- [blows whistle]

Hello, Thomas.

- Hi, Samson.

- [clears throat]

- Oh.

Hello, Bradford.

- Are you sure those crates

are correctly secured

to your flatbed, Thomas?

- Yes, thank you, Bradford.

Perfectly secure.

- What have you got there,

Thomas?

- Oh, these are the fireworks

for the earl's

annual fireworks display

tonight at Ulfstead Castle.

- F-f-fireworks?

- My favorites are the rockets.

They're like space rockets,

whooshing up into the sky,

higher and higher

and higher.

Whee!

Bang!

Bang!

[laughs]

[dramatic music]

See you later!

♪ ♪

Whoo-hoo-hoo!

[laughs]

Bang!

Bang!

[laughs]

- Oh, stop it, Thomas.

Stop it.

[deflating noise]

- Samson?

What's the matter?

- Uh, n-n-nothing, nothing.

Why should anything

be the matter?

Not afraid of fireworks

No, not at all.

Just a few loud bangs.

Ha, nothing to worry about.

- Enough nattering.

We're already running

seconds late.

Let's go, let's go.

Come on, move it, move it.

[horn music]

- Later that day,

a thick fog rolled in

over the island of Sodor.

None of us could see

where we were going.

[gasps]

- Watch out, Thomas!

- [strains]

Sorry, Gordon.

I-I didn't see the red

signal.

- Well, you should've

been looking

where you were go--

[both scream]

- Phew.

- Look out!

- Oof!

- Sorry.

- [strains, grunts]

Now, because the fog

is so bad,

and we don't want

any accidents,

I've asked Cyril the Fogman

to come and help us out.

- This is a detonator.

We will be placing these

on the tracks

to warn you that you are

coming up to a signal,

so when you hear a bang,

slow down and look out...

[bang]

- Ooh.

- Because there's

a signal ahead.

- Uh, thank you, Cyril.

Now, off you go,

and be careful out there.

[shrill whistle]

- [blows whistle]

[bang]

[train cars yell]

- Oh, dear.

What's that noise?

- Don't panic.

It's only the fog detonators.

They're warning us that

we're coming to some signals.

Samson and Bradford were on

their way to the quarry,

but nobody had warned them

about the detonators.

- I'm sure this isn't the way

to the Blue Mountain Quarry.

You must have taken

a wrong turn in the fog.

- And then there was trouble.

[bang]

- Ah! What was that?

[bang]

Ah! Fireworks.

Fireworks!

- No, Samson!

Those aren't fireworks.

They're fog detonators--[yells]

[bang]

- [screaming]

Ah!

Help! Ah!

- [yells]

Watch out!

- Sorry!

[yelling]

- Samson, stop screaming.

They're not fireworks.

Get a grip!

- [incoherent gibbering]

- And he's not listening.

- Ah!

Fireworks!

Fireworks!

- [humming absently]

Ah!

Excuse me.

What are you playing at?

This isn't a shunting yard!

- [yelling]

[bang]

[yelling]

[dramatic music]

♪ ♪

- Oof!

Finally.

- Sorry, Bradford.

[pants]

Don't know where we are now.

I didn't mean to get lost,

but, well,

I really do not

like fireworks.

- They weren't fireworks.

I've been trying to tell you.

Those bangs

were fog detonators,

to warn you

about signals in the fog.

- Oh.

- "Oh," indeed.

Now we're lost in the fog

in the middle of nowhere.

- But what do we do now?

- Nothing we can do, boy-o,

except sit here and wait

for the fog to lift.

[harmonica playing]

♪ ♪

- [clears throat]

- Uh, sorry.

- Uh, uh,

fog hasn't lifted.

- No, it hasn't,

and now it's dark, too.

[sighs]

[firework screams, bangs]

- W-w-what was that?

[fireworks exploding]

- Fireworks?

- I thought you said

they were detonators.

- Not on the tracks.

Up there, in the sky.

[wondrous music]

- No, no, don't want to look.

Make them go away.

- See, Samson.

They're not scary.

In fact, they look beautiful.

Lovely colors and that.

Oh, look at that one.

- Oh.

I suppose it is quite pretty.

- They're not just pretty,

my lad.

Useful, too.

- Useful?

- That must be the earl's

firework display.

If we follow the fireworks

to the castle,

then we'll know where we are,

and we can find our way home.

- Okay, but--but--

I don't want to get

too close to those fireworks.

- Of course not, but we can't

stay here all night.

Step to it, now.

Follow those whizzes and bangs!

- [blows whistle]

[peppy rock music]

[quavering]

- Oh-ho-ho-ho!

It's working, Samson.

The fireworks are helping us

find our way.

- Oh.

Look, Bradford, look!

It's the castle.

We're here!

♪ ♪

[cheers and applause]

- So what do you think

of the fireworks, then, Samson?

- Ah, well, they're not so bad,

after all,

and most helpful.

[loud bang]

Ah! Oh.

But I do wish

they weren't so loud.

- Well done, Samson.

Section

of the railway rulebook

says engines

who face their fears

are very, very useful.

[bell ringing]

- [toots whistle]

What do you do

when your friends are scared

or upset?

Sometimes, you can help them

feel better.

My friend Henry used to be

scared of the rain.

He thought it would ruin

his paint work,

so he would always try

to find a place

to hide and stay dry.

I didn't like seeing Henry

looking so sad and worried,

so I tried to show him

that rain

was nothing to be

frightened of.

After all, it's only water.

When Samson got scared

of the fireworks,

Bradford stayed with him

and helped him

get over his fear.

Once Samson calmed down,

he realized that he did

quite like the fireworks

after all.

Sometimes, we can help

our friends feel better,

just like our friends

can help us, too,

and friends who help

each other

are the best friends of all.

[whistle blows]

- Come on, Thomas!

- It's time to go.

- See you next time!

[whistle toots]

[peppy rock music]

[upbeat music]

[children singing]

[whistle toots]

[whistle blowing]

[horn toots]
