[narrator reading title]

Some engines on the Island of Sodor give diesels a bad reputation.

[laughing menacingly]

Hey!

[laughing]

[humming to itself]

[narrator] But Paxton is one of the kindest diesels you could ever meet.

Good morning, Thomas!

Good morning, Paxton.

[narrator] And because he is kind, Paxton has a lot of friends.

Paxton is friends with the narrow gage engines

up at the Blue Mountain quarry.

[horn honks]

[engines whistle]

Hello there, Paxton!

Hello, Skarloey!

[narrator] And with Salty and Porter at Brendam Docks.

Even cranky Cranky is friends with Paxton.

Look, Cranky! I've got youyour favorite again.Heavy stone! [chuckles]

[chuckling] Oh, Paxton!You shouldn't have.

[narrator] But the engine Paxton has to try the hardest

to be friends with is Diesel himself.

Ooh! Diesel! Hello! Hello!

[narrator] Unfortunately, Diesel is not a very easy engine to be friends with.

Quick! Paxton is coming!

Let's all hide,so he can't find us!

It'll be very funny.

[chuckling] OK.

I like funny jokes. [chuckles]

Come on, Sidney. You need to hide, too.

Hello. Oh! You'll never guesswhat happened downat the docks. It...

Hello?

Oh. There's nobody here.

[laughing]

Diesels?

Where can they be?

Anybody here?

No. [giggles]

[Paxton echoing] Hello!

What's going on?

Something terriblemust have happened!

All the dieselshave disappeared!

I have to find them!

[laughing menacingly]

I think we've taken this jokea little too far.

Yeah.

What he means isPaxton was really worried.

[laughing] Don't be suchfussy buffers!

It was a joke, that's all.

And jokes are really funny!

[narrator] Paxton didn't think it was a joke at all.

[whistling sadly]

[sighs] Hello?Any diesels here?

I'm a diesel.

[narrator] But Paxton didn'’t hear Rusty

because he was already hurrying away.

[engines whistling]

Have you seen any diesels,Thomas?

Um, I can see you.

Not me! The other diesels.

They've disappeared!

Where's Salty?Is he missing, too?

Something is makingall the diesels disappear!

Don't talk nonsense,Paxton.

Salty went by five minutes ago.

Ahhaaar!Somebody mention my name?

Oh, Salty! Thank goodnessyou're still here!

Ahhrrr! You're burning fuelover nothing!

The other diesels'll turn upsoon enough.

Oh, do you reallythink so, Salty?

Oh, no doubt about it,matey! Ahar!

Cool your pistonsand fill your t*nk again.

[narrator] After all the rushing around, Paxton'’s fuel was getting low.

I bet my buffers at the endof the day,

the diesels'll be backat the Dieselworks,

where they belong![laughing] Ahhhaaarrr!

And here's Diesel himself.

Diesel? Where?

Shush, Cranky! Who asked youto put your hook in?

Diesel, wait! Come back!

[whistles]

[laughing]

Paxton doesn'’t give up easily,I'’ll give him that!

Diesel! Wait!

[children cheering]

[laughing]

They don't call meDevious Diesel for nothing![laughs]

[panting]

Yes?

Can I help you, Diesel?

Is that Diesel over there, Reg?

[pretends to be Reg]Uh. No. It isn't!

But that did soundlike Diesel.

That's becauseit is Diesel, Paxton!

[Diesel] No, it's not.I'm a truckload of sausages.

Sausages?Diesel, wait, come back.

[honks]

Oh. What do you want to gochasing after him for?

He's my friend!

Is he really?

[narrator] Diesel was still having so much fun

that he decided to go up to the quarry to hide.

[laughing and coughing]

[narrator] But no sooner had he pulled off the mainline,

then he ran out of fuel.

No!

My t*nk can'’t be empty!

Finally! Diesel,I'’ve been worried.

All the dieselshave gone missing!

We weren'’t missing. We were hiding from you!

Oh! Well, that's not a verygood hiding place, Diesel.

I can see you![chuckles]

[sighs] I know.I didn't expect to stop.

A better hiding place would bebehind a shed or some bushes

or even up at the quarry.

I know! I know!

I didn't plan to hide here, but I ran out of fuel and--

Oh! Well, why didn't yousay so?

[honks]

What are you doing?

I'm shunting youto the next station

so you can get some more fuel.

Oh!

[narrator] Diesel didn't know what to make of this.

He hadn't been very kind to Paxton.

But Paxton was very kind to him.

[Paxton honking]

[narrator] Diesel didn't know what to say.

He didn't like to say, "Thank you",

so he didn't say it.

Why did you help me?

That's what friends are for.

[narrator] Paxton was just happy to have found Diesel again.

He was even happier when he got back to the Dieselworks

and found the other diesels there!

Hello! I was looking for you!

[all honk and whistle]

[narrator] Diesel came back to the sheds

and backed into the berth beside Paxton.

He still didn't manage to say, "Thank you",

but he did manage a friendly smile.

And that was enough to make Paxton smile, too.
