[male narrator] "The Little Engine Who Raced Ahead."

One day, Thomas was in the yard at Knapford Station

when something unusual caught his eye.

Huh?

That'’s strange.

[whistle toots]

Did you see something yellow rushing around, Percy?

Something yellow?

Like a banana? [laughs]

A banana? [laughs]

And no, Thomas, I didn'’t.

Oh!

Hello, there!

My name'’s Philip.

I'’m a diesel box cab.

Hello, Philip.

I'’m Thomas, and my friend is called Percy.

I'’ve come to work on Sir Topham Hatt'’s railway.

With us?

Um, I don'’t know, maybe.

I'’m supposed to shunt cars, but I'’m not sure which ones.

Oh, maybe those back there.

[both laughing]

[whistle toots]

Who was that?

[both] That was Philip.

[both laughing]

[narrator] Philip was Sir Topham Hatt'’s new engine.

And he was very eager to make a good impression.

[grunts]

Hello, big engine.

I'’m Philip.

Can I get you some cars to pull?

Cars?

Ha, I don'’t think so!

Well, I'’m only trying to be helpful.

If you want to be helpful, then I suggest

you do your best not to get in my way.

[Philip] Don'’t worry.

Oh!

I won'’t.

You be sure that you don'’t.

I pull the express, and I travel very fast.

I'’m very fast, too!

Hey! [horn honks]

Just you watch how fast I can take those cars

to the other end of the yard.

[groans]

[Philip] This is gonna be brilliant!

See? See?

You see how fast I am, huh?

You see how fast I... I am.

Oh.

Where did that big engine go?

He was supposed to be watching me.

Big engine?

Oh, you mean Gordon.

He'’s about to pull the express.

[whistle blows]

Hey, wait!

Wait!

Express coming through!

Hey! Wait!

Wait!

You were supposed to be watching me.

[whistle toots]

Philip, stop!

Your signal is red!

[whistle blowing]

Whoa, Philip.

That was close.

Ha, I know.

I could have caught up with him

if it wasn'’t for that signal.

Gordon'’s very fast, Philip.

And I'’m very fast, too.

[laughs]

Well, Gordon will be back again later

if you really want to show him how fast you are.

[narrator] Philip couldn'’t wait for Gordon to come back.

He kept coming into the station to check the time

on the big clock.

[whistle toots]

[Gordon] Express coming through!

Oh, it'’s him!

[narrator] Philip was so excited to see Gordon

that he rushed straight out into Knapford Junction

without thinking.

Hello, big engine!

Hello!

[whistle blowing]

Uh-oh.

[whimpers]

No, no, no, no!

Oh!

[wheels screeching]

[Gordon grunting]

[sighs]

[groans] Philip!

What did I tell you about getting in the way?

You nearly caused a terrible accident.

Sorry, big engine... I mean, Gordon.

But why didn'’t you watch me?

You went away when I was trying to show you how fast I can--

[Sir Topham Hatt] Philip!

Now, Philip, I know you'’re new here.

But if you want to work on my railway,

you must learn to work safely and obey all the rules.

[chuckles] I couldn'’t have put it better myself, sir.

Mm.

I'’m sorry, sir.

I didn'’t mean to cause any trouble.

I'’ll be careful from now on. I promise.

[horn honks]

Hmm.

[groans]

[narrator] But the little diesel box cab was still determined

to show Gordon how fast he could go.

[horn honks]

Hello, big engine!

I mean, Gordon.

Let'’s have a race!

[groans] I'’m having a rest, Philip,

so please go away.

Oh, come on!

Let'’s have a race.

On your marks. Get set...

Go!

[horn honks] Whoo-hoo!

Away.

[narrator] Gordon wanted Philip to go away.

But Philip thought it was the start of their race.

[groans]

Ha-ha!

Look how fast I am.

You can'’t catch me!

[whistle toots]

Uh-oh.

Oh, it'’s you.

Where are you off to?

I'’m having a race.

Really?

Who are you racing?

Gordon.

Didn'’t you see him back there?

No, I didn'’t.

Ha-ha! That means I'’m winning.

Yes! Ha-ha!

[panting]

[elephant trumpets]

Oh, thank you.

[whistle toots]

Oh, you'’re not Gordon.

No, I'’m Emily.

But who are you?

I'’m Philip, and I'’m having a race.

Okay...

[narrator] Philip raced all the way to Brendham Docks.

And he didn'’t see Gordon at all.

I'’m the winner!

Hurray!

[all laughing]

-All right! -Hurray!

[all laughing]

[narrator] That night, Philip followed his new friends

back to Tidmouth Sheds.

I got all the way to Brendham Docks,

and he didn'’t even catch up.

So I was the winner!

Ask Emily if you don'’t believe me.

[all laughing]

Better luck next time, Gordon!

I wasn'’t actually racing.

[all laughing]

I told you I was fast.

Shouldn'’t you be in another shed with the diesels?

Oh, but I want to stay with my new friends.

[Percy] Philip?

It'’s okay. I can sleep in the back.

You won'’t even know that I'’m here.

[all giggling quietly]

Tomorrow, little Philip, I shall take the opportunity

to show you just how fast I really am.

Okay, Gordon.

I mean, we can have another race if you want to.

But don'’t forget, I still b*at you the first time!

[chuckles]

[all giggling quietly]

[groaning] Oh, the indignity.
