[ominous music playing]

[music intensifies]

[neighs]

Welcome to France, Your Magnificence.

Your long and tedious journey

is almost over.

[sighs]

My sister the Moon burns brightly tonight.

She's very excited, of course.

Soon we will force our father,

Amun-Ra, the Sun,

down on his knees

to grovel in the mud for mercy.

But there will be no f*cking mercy.

I will cut off his head and suck out

his brains and spit them into the dust.

[groans]

They've always worshiped him.

My father. The f*cking Sun.

Since they crawled out of caves,

mortals have adored him,

because they are afraid of the dark.

Soon there will be only darkness.

And terror will be all they know.

For now though, Countess,

the nights are short this far north.

We still have a way to travel.

Yes, yes.

[groans]

But I'm so thirsty, Drolta.

[people whimpering]

[whimpering]

[gasps]

[Drolta] Daughter

of a revolutionary deputy.

A member of the Jacobin Club.

- [woman whimpers]

- [Drolta] Lawyer.

Liked the sound of his own voice.

I'm told he begged for his own life

rather than hers.

[whimpers]

[groans]

[groaning weakly]

[Erzsebet] Oh. Oh, yes.

Exquisite.

I'm so bored of empty terror.

- [sniffs, moans]

- [woman whimpers]

- [Erzsebet] This is much, much sweeter.

- [whimpers]

Despair.

- [woman screams]

- [sinister music playing]

[music swells, fades]

[dramatic opening theme music plays]

[Richter panting]

Hold on.

I need some f*cking answers, Granddad.

[Juste] Please,

call me anything but granddad.

Where the f*ck have you been all my life?

I thought you were dead.

I'm gonna k*ll Tera.

I came to this country when I was 10,

knowing absolutely nobody.

If it wasn't for Auntie Tera,

who isn't really my auntie,

more some sort of third cousin

a thousand times removed

[Juste] We had a f*cking deal.

- What do you mean you're gonna k*ll her?

- [Juste sighs]

She promised not to tell you

where to find me.

What are you talking about?

You mean, she didn't tell you?

No! What? No No!

[Juste] Uh

Well, in answer to your question,

where have I been all your life?

I've been here all the time.

Since you came to France.

Keeping an eye on you.

You mean you've been watching me?

Secretly?

Well, when you put it like that,

I suppose it sounds a bit creepy.

[Richter] And Tera knew?

She agreed not to tell you.

I've been giving her money.

And that was the deal?

No, no, of course not.

Uh, well, sort of.

When I have a bit of money from k*lling

these stupid provincial vampires,

I give her some to help out.

But I asked her

not to tell you about me because

[inhales]

Well, I thought it was for the best.

You didn't want me to know

I had an actual f*cking grandfather

living a few miles away?

No, I didn't.

You might expect things from me.

Advice, encouragement, birthday presents.

Who the hell wants that?

My mother said you were dead.

In fact, she never even mentioned you

except to say you were dead.

She said she went to the New World

because there was no one else,

and she was the heir

to the Belmont mission,

and there were vampires there

she had to fight.

Like Olrox.

Where are you going now?

You're a Belmont.

You're not supposed to hide in a hut.

And you're not supposed to k*ll

vampires for money.

I was a hero once.

I lost count of how many vampires

I k*lled "heroically."

The whip was mine, then, of course.

But I had other powers.

One of our ancestors 300 years ago

was a great sorceress.

Sypha, yes. I know.

I know everything

about the history of our family.

My mother taught me.

And she left you out.

I'm starting to see why.

- [Juste chuckling]

- [gentle music playing]

[Juste] You sound so much like her.

I was the most powerful magician

the Belmont line ever produced.

Barely needed the whip.

I could roast a whole nest of them

with a burst of flame.

[Richter] So, when did you turn

into this creepy old man?

[Juste] Go outside. I'll bring you coffee.

I think I've got another cup.

[footsteps approaching]

You said you were a powerful magician?

Emphasis on the "were."

I had a wife.

Your grandmother, Lydie.

And a friend too, if you can believe that.

His name was Maxim.

A vampire k*lled them both.

[sighs]

Lord Ruthven.

God, that's a name

I haven't spoken aloud in years.

I held her in my arms,

pleading with her to come back to me.

"Come back to me."

Holding her.

So limp.

So cold.

So cold.

And across the hall,

Maxim, my friend, butchered.

And for a while, not quite dead.

All because of me.

The magic left me.

I had nothing.

Nothing left.

You lost your daughter too.

Or have you forgotten that part?

Your daughter who went

to America to fight evil alone.

[mysterious music playing]

Evil will always win, Richter.

Whatever it is, evil.

And it's everywhere.

It will always be stronger than us.

And you can k*ll this or that devil.

A Lord Ruthven, a Dracula,

maybe even an Olrox.

But there'll always be more,

more and worse.

And they'll m*rder the people you love.

[gentle, tragic music playing]

No one around you are safe.

Evil will always win.

Why are you here then,

if you didn't come looking for me?

[music fades]

What are you doing here?

[sobbing softly]

[gloomy music playing]

[eerie music playing]

[sniffs]

Hmm.

[mysterious music playing]

[magic humming]

[strains]

[dramatic music playing]

[strains]

[music fading]

[exhales]

You k*lled Vaublanc.

We all rejoiced.

But I lost Edouard.

Though not his soul.

Take courage from that.

The Belmont boy

turned out to be useless as f*ck.

He literally ran away.

Ran. Away.

Everyone starts by running away, Annette.

What?

That is completely different.

How can you possibly compare that?

I came here for guidance.

I thought I'd seen

the worst evil the world could hold.

But here,

it's been growing roots for centuries.

And this Vampire Messiah,

she's older still.

Your power is old too, Annette.

If these are my ancestors, Cecile,

they're just a babble. Noise.

They are no match for some

ancient Egyptian Devil-God.

They're only a babble

because you're not listening.

[mysterious music playing]

You were shaped, Annette.

Everything about you,

by being born a sl*ve.

Of course you were.

It's the source of your fury,

but it's not the source of your power.

They like to tell you,

these petty devils

like the Comte de Vaublanc,

that sl*very is just the way of the world.

It's what people do.

And you can look around and think,

oh, maybe they're right.

Evil, v*olence, and oppression everywhere.

Even these French with their high ideals.

What do they know

about what we've suffered?

And what do they care?

They'll build their new world,

but it won't be freedom

or equality or brotherhood for us.

If they build it at all.

But they know it's not true, Annette.

The petty devils.

It serves them if we believe it.

But humanity didn't enter this world

dragging armies of slaves.

That came later.

And your ancestors.

Of course I mean your mother,

who loved you.

And your father,

who was dragged from her

by men with whips.

And your grandmother,

who watched the ships sail,

weeping and pulling her hair.

[chuckles softly] But they go back.

Beyond them and beyond them.

Back to the source.

To the Iwa of Ogun.

And a world without slaves or masters.

Learn to hear your ancestors.

There is light in this darkness.

["Requiem in D Minor" by Mozart plays]

[Edouard singing in Latin]

[Edouard continues singing]

[growling softly]

[Edouard continues singing in distance]

"Mournful that day, when from the dust

shall rise guilty men to be judged."

[chuckles] He's threatening you.

Your reluctant demon.

Why was the Belmont boy so afraid of you?

I lived a long time as human and vampire.

But I've only really loved once.

He was from a little town

in Massachusetts,

if you've ever heard of that.

Which in those days, was a colony.

But he wasn't a colonist.

He was proud to be Mohican,

with roots deep in the land and forest.

He b*rned with such passion.

About the world, about how the people,

"the people," that's how he talked,

could win this thing called freedom.

Even people like him.

People whose land had been stolen, I mean.

Like mine was, oh, so long ago.

But he fought with them,

the revolutionaries.

He fought with them.

He almost made me believe in it too.

Then Julia Belmont k*lled him.

[Mizrak] Because he was a vampire.

And you did that to him.

- Did you even ask permission?

- I was in love with him.

I wanted him to be with me forever.

And is that what you have planned for me?

Of course not, Mizrak.

I'm not in love with you.

[song ends]

Who were you, friend?

Do you remember who you were?

[ominous music playing]

[night creature] I remember

being out in the woods.

And a girl who liked talking.

I remember that I liked her.

And I liked what she said.

My name

was Jacques.

[music continues]

[breathes deeply]

[music fades]

Do they know?

All of them? Do they know?

[sighs] Of course not.

Ashamed to tell them, are you?

Why?

I mean, you're a priest,

so you're supposed to keep it

in your pants.

But everyone knows most priests don't.

Most popes don't even.

They are dishonorable priests.

[chuckles]

Fathering a few brats here and there

doesn't count for much

compared to summoning devils from hell.

Or does the Pope do that too?

We do whatever we have to do

in the name of God.

It was for God, was it?

That you ignored me my whole life?

I haven't ignored you, Maria.

I know, for instance, that you're a witch.

But I protected you anyway.

You're not seriously accusing me

of black magic?

[ominous music playing]

[Abbot] Join me.

[laughs]

[Abbot] God moves through me, Maria.

I implore you.

Please, don't stand in God's way.

- [vampire] Our savior is here!

- [gasps]

[vampires] Our deliverer has come!

Our deliverer!

Down the Revolution!

Praise be to God!

Our savior!

Salvation is here!

Lift our soul!

She's come to save us.

Our savior!

She's here! She's here! She's here!

She's here!

She will save us! She will save us!

[all clamoring excitedly]

[vampires] Deliver us!

Down with the Revolution!

[music peaks, fades]

Long ago, when I was still human,

I watched men wade ashore from ships

and slaughter my people.

Slaughter them in their thousands,

millions in the end.

Who could've believed such a thing?

They said they were doing it

for their God.

Sometimes their king too,

but always their God.

But in the end

[chuckles]

[inhales sharply]

there's only her.

[vampires] Death to the Revolution!

Down with the Revolution!

- [crowd clamoring]

- [dramatic, gloomy music playing]

I've been looking for you.

[vampires chanting]

Death to the Revolution!

He says this is God's plan.

Have courage.

There is light in this darkness.

[Edouard] And in this prison,

down here in the dark, Jacques.

Standing guard over me.

Do you accept it now, as your fate?

[eerie music playing]

[Jacques] No.

[music fades]

Was it quick?

Julia's death?

Was it quick?

No, not really.

She was looking right at me when she d*ed.

I could tell.

I mean,

I could tell when her life stopped.

I saw it in her eyes.

The actual moment where it ended.

And then Olrox let me go.

[Juste] She was proud, your mother.

She said she didn't need me.

I would only slow her down.

[inhales deeply]

But, of course,

I should have gone with her anyway.

I was a terrible father.

But well

[chuckles dryly] most important thing is

to face the truth about yourself.

Even if it's not very pretty.

[grunts]

I need a piss.

[Richter gasps softly]

[tense music building]

[breathes deeply]

- [grunts]

- [music intensifies]

[panting]

[disorienting music building]

[music swells]

- [roars]

- sh*t!

- [grunts]

- [whip cracks]

[Nikolai laughs, grunts]

- [a* clangs]

- [groans]

[screeching]

[vampire grunts]

[gasps]

- [suspenseful music playing]

- [grunts]

[grunts]

- [strains]

- [sizzles]

[gasps]

[groans]

[grunts]

[music fades]

So then, here we are.

- The Belmont Clan soon to be extinct.

- [Richter straining]

[ominous music playing]

What, are you going to beg

for his life first?

[chuckles] Maybe not his.

After all, you hardly know him.

But back in Machecoul,

they're family, aren't they?

Sort of.

The little girl who isn't your sister

but is almost your sister.

The Speaker woman who isn't your mother,

but has been like a mother to you.

And the Black girl.

Wherever the f*ck she is from.

- You could beg for their lives.

- [gasps]

[Nikolai chuckles]

Not a lot of point begging to me though,

because it won't be me that kills them.

That will be the gift

of the Devourer of Light.

Often she hangs you by your arms

with hooks through the bones,

making sure you don't bleed out too fast.

You can be conscious for days.

It's wonderful.

If they're lucky,

she'll turn them,

and then they'll never die.

What do you think of that?

[laughs]

[sighs]

[pants]

[sobbing softly]

- [high-pitched ringing]

- [heart b*ating]

[heartbeat accelerating]

- [shudders]

- [magic crackling]

- [yelling]

- [magic crashing]

[magic whooshing]

[wind whipping]

[magic rumbling]

[wind whipping]

[wind fades]

[dramatic music plays]

[Richter gasps]

[vampire grunts]

[crackles]

- [dramatic music playing]

- [screams]

[demonic snarling]

[vampire groans]

[screams]

There's something

you forgot about Belmonts

[gasps]

[Richter] Stupid of me,

I'd forgotten it too.

[gasping in fear]

- [ice whistling]

- [groans]

- [whip whooshes]

- [gasps, groans]

- [grunts]

- [whip whooshes]

[panting]

[Nikolai panting]

[chuckles]

I was going to say something witty

and cutting and brutal

before I finished you off.

But f*ck it.

- [whooshing powerfully]

- [screams briefly]

[rumbling]

[rumbling fades]

[gentle, ethereal music playing]

[footsteps approaching]

I can do magic again.

I noticed.

How did it happen?

I don't know.

Because I had to.

I have to live.

There are people I love.

Pity it didn't work like that for you.

I'm much younger than you.

That's probably all it is.

Yes.

That's probably all it is.

[music fades]

[ethereal music resumes]
