(male narrator) Tonight on "Spenser, For Hire.."

(Martin) We got you this time.

You could be doin' some very hard time.

I told her it was a frame-up.

What he's got is a grudge, coming my way.

Let's take him.

Company!

It's me he wants, and it's me he's gonna get.

[expl*si*n]

This time Hawk pays up.

If you try to take him, he'll draw on ya.

[instrumental music]

[g*nsh*t]

Marty.

He was sh*t in the back.

- Who sh*t him? - It was Hawk.

'And he's goin' down for it.'

[theme music]

[music continues]

[music continues]

[instrumental music]

(Doyle) 'I don't know, Mr. Flaherty. It's dangerous.'

(Flaherty) 'No, it's simple.'

You get me those pictures

out of police property

and you get paid.

Yeah, sure, just walk in.

Doyle, Doyle, Doyle.

- 'Why are we here?' - 'What do you mean?'

- 'We made a deal.' - 'I know we did.'

(Doyle on wireless) 'Only it's not easy, I can't just'

waltz in there and start pullin' stuff.

Maybe I made a mistake today.

I thought your daughter needed physical therapy.

(Doyle) 'That's the problem, Mr. Flaherty.'

'Therapy takes years, the money's not enough.'

Come on, baby, say it.

Alright, I'm a reasonable man instead.

I'll up it to ,, but I want the negatives, too.

(Doyle) Ten thousand cash.

Cash is the only way I do business.

(Doyle on wireless) 'You got it.'

(Flaherty) 'You're a hell of a good father.'

- Marty, he's hooked. - Let's take him.

Come on.

[siren wailing]

Company! Damn!

[engine revs]

[dramatic music]

We got you this time.

'Dumb, Tommy. Doyle's not even married.'

Doyle, grab his cannon.

[indistinct radio chatter]

I got some new jewelry for you, Hawk.

[Flaherty scoffs] 'Some bodyguard.'

You frisk him, you didn't find the wire.

Yeah, these new bugs we got are terrific, huh, Hawk?

It's just a button.

Too bad you're not keepin' up with the hi-tech stuff.

Gloat while you can, my lawyers will have me

back on the street in hours.

After I indicted you for trying to bribe a cop?

On top of standing indictments for racketeering?

Good luck.

You wanna know what you can do with your indictments, madam?

Keep your mouth shut. Show a little respect.

Get him out of here, Frank.

Gentlemen, shall we go to booking?

Roses are red, violets are blue.

Violets aren't blue, they're violet.

Wrap these together, please.

To quibble is the prerogative of the legal mind

to the poetic belongs justice.

Okay, you got me, who said it?

Well, not the guy who wrote "The Faerie Queene"

the other one.

Oh, great, now he's making up his own quotes.

Why not go with the best?

Why don't we settle this over a cappuccino?

- Settle what? - Where we're having dinner.

[sighs] That's a nice idea, but I really can't tonight.

Sure you can.

Just tell the guy you've gotta wash your hair

or re-arrange your closet or some feeble excuse like that.

There is no guy.

I really can't tonight.

Okay, I promise not to give you a hard time

about the unreasonable excessive bail you laid on Hawk.

So that's what this is all about?

No, two separate issues.

Allaying hunger and bail, nobody could make.

Flaherty's connected. What does that make Hawk?

Contract agent. Day player.

I liked Paladin on TV when I was a kid

but I've learned something about

the "Have g*n - Will Travel" mentality since then.

Well, Hawk is about notches above a hired g*n.

- He's also your friend. - Too strong a word.

I've really got to catch a train.

[traffic bustling]

I'm sorry, it's just a bad weekend for me.

How about an early dinner on Tuesday evening?

You got it. Chez Genese, o'clock.

[instrumental music]

(Martin) Let's stop dancin' around, okay?

Maybe we don't like each other

but neither one of us is stupid.

I'll leave that alone.

You could be doin' some very hard time.

Resist an arrest, bein' an accessory to bribery..

'So why don't we talk?'

I'm all you got, Hawk.

Flaherty has left you high and dry.

That so?

He's been on the street for hours.

He hasn't taken step one about bailin' you out.

[knock on door]

Bail's been posted, Marty.

You sure you want to do this, Spenser?

What's a new Mustang?

Am I interrupting something here?

A lesson in negotiation

from a position of strength

which you just lost, lieutenant.

I take back what I said about stupid.

Flaherty's workin' all over you.

You gentlemen finished with me?

Just don't decide to take any unilateral action.

And, uh, don't leave town either.

We wouldn't wanna have to take up a collection

to get poor old Spenser off the MTA, would we?

(Martin) 'Hawk.'

Man is known by the company he keeps.

Stay away from Flaherty.

He's in way over his head this time.

Hey, don't I at least get a thank you?

You need one?

You know, takin' an attitude for gettin' busted

when you're workin' for a guy like Flaherty

is a little unreasonable.

I worked for the man before.

The unreasonable part's comin'

from your good friend Quirk in there.

Well, this time it's different.

How?

Quirk makes a case stick against Flaherty

he could become Chief of Police.

Not to mention Rita Fiore leap frogging

up the judicial totem pole.

Well, you know, I wouldn't want a little thing like my freedom

to derail a couple of brilliant careers.

Just think of Flaherty as a big, dead tree.

He's gonna fall.

And all he can do is step aside from doing time.

Let me play back two things for you, babe.

I do not talk to the man and I do not do time.

And nobody, including you, gonna change that.

You want a ride?

I mean, while I still own the car!

[dramatic music]

He don't know you. You don't see him.

Just tell him I'm here, Short Round.

Take a walk, Ace.

[music continues]

(Flaherty) 'Tell the senator I'm meeting him Friday.'

If he has any questions, I'll be glad to make myself available.

If I wanted to k*ll you, man, you'd be dead.

[beeping]

[grunts]

Of course, if you wanted to k*ll me, you'd be dead, too.

What do you want?

Tyrone Blackwell at your service.

'The way I heard it, the last guy you had'

'screwed you up pretty good.'

- How'd you get in here? - I flew.

- 'From where?' - Out of town, this morning.

And your first piece of business was to look me up?

I need some action.

And you're a man with a whole lot of action.

- The way I hear it-- - 'Murph.'

[exhales] You got flash.

[clicks tongue] Maybe too much.

Guy comes to my house from out of town, no references.

- You could be anybody. - Ain't no cop.

And sure as hell, ain't just anybody.

Give me a job and I'll show you that.

I'm taking a lot of legal heat these days.

Soon as things quiet down, I'll find you something freelance.

'See how it goes.'

What if I, uh, take off some of that heat?

Nah, forget it, the lawyers are telling me

to keep a low profile till we go to trial.

The way this Hawk dude set you up

wasn't a real low profile.

A cop named Quirk set me up.

- Hawk just didn't read it. - Already said it.

Hawk blew it.

'Maybe I'll show him what happens'

'when a guy working for you screws up.'

You listen to me, Mr. Blackwell.

Stay away from Hawk.

He eats guys like you on toast.

Well, let me tell you somethin'.

The word's out on the street that you're running scared.

Name of the game ain't defense, Flaherty.

Don't tell me how to run my business.

Don't give me orders..

...unless you're willing to pay for the privilege.

[laughs] Staff needs work, man.

[laughs]

[dramatic music]

- Well, how was your weekend? - I went to see my best friend.

In a hospital in Providence.

- What is it? - Leukemia.

We watched football on TV.

Two games back to back.

'We didn't talk, we just'

sat there and held hands and watched.

She must be a real fan.

She doesn't know the first thing about football.

She said she just likes the color of the grass.

The doctors say... three or four more weekends.

Maybe.

Maybe next weekend we can teach her

the fundamentals of football.

With a dozen cops in the neighborhood

you didn't see it was a trap.

You set the meet. I drive the car.

Maybe that's all you're good for anymore.

That what you think?

I didn't bail you out. What does that tell you?

Solid. You owe me five for the week.

- Sue me. - Yeah.

[laughs]

[dramatic music]

Patch me through to Quirk.

- 'Quirk here.' - Yeah.

Hawk and Flaherty are dancin' again.

[music continues]

What is it with you and cabbage, Frank?

Well, it's your ultimate mixer, Marty.

You get your corned beef, you get your wurst

you get hot mustard, you get the onions--

And you, when you finish, you get your seltzer water, right?

[chuckles] I'll see you in the morning.

Goodnight, Marty.

[engine revs]

[intense music]

[g*nsh*t]

[tires screeching]

[intense music]

Marty.

[engine revving]

[tires screeching]

[dramatic music]

[indistinct chatter]

Frank, what happened?

He was sh*t in the back.

He's on the table now.

- Who sh*t him? - It was Hawk.

What are you talkin' about?

I was there. I saw him with my own eyes.

It was Hawk.

And he's goin' down for it.

And I'm gonna take him down myself.

[dramatic music]

(Spenser) We cannot tell the precise moment

when a friendship is formed or bonds well.

As in filling a vessel drop by drop

there is a last drop which makes it run over.

It'd been a long time since that telltale drop

had bonded Marty Quirk and me.

After the surgeons had finished removing

a slug from Marty's back

I urged Marty's wife to go home and get some sleep.

I knew Frank Belson would stay until she returned.

Doc, what's goin' on?

We're having trouble stopping the internal bleeding.

We have to open him up again.

I'll keep you both informed.

- I'll call up Katie. - Yeah, thanks.

I'll stay with him.

[device beeping]

(Tyrone) 'Mornin'!'

You turn to page three, you can read

all about this unknown assailant

that took down the toughest cop in Boston last night.

You sh*t Marty Quirk?

Flaherty, it says, "Assailant unknown."

'I do know one thing.'

A man who'd do a thing like that

is due some heavy respect.

'A man who'd do a thing like that for you'

deserves more than just a freelance trial garbage.

I don't need a crazy cop k*ller around me.

Well, now, that's wise.

But the man didn't die because my aim is true.

'And now the heat is off you.'

I ought to hire you for being hungry

or k*ll you for being dumb.

Alright, I'll give you a try.

Aslow, throw him the keys.

[keys clinking]

Where to, boss?

I've got some money to collect.

[instrumental music]

(Spenser) I left the hospital when Marty's condition

had stabilized.

I got home to find that Hawk had called from a payphone.

He wanted to meet.

We weren't going to sit down to tea, though.

Hawk was on the run, and wanted the place

where we met to have elbow room.

Belson signed an affidavit

swearing he saw you at the scene.

Warrant's being drawn up, attempted m*rder.

You sure are tapped in.

- Rita called. - Oh, yeah?

To tell you she's doin' her job

or is it her job callin' you?

Paranoia doesn't become you.

If the goal is stayin' alive, then paranoia

seems a reasonable strategy.

I told her it was a frame-up.

That you wouldn't sh**t Marty Quirk.

What about my cellmate's latest motive?

Flaherty? sh**ting a cop's not his style.

The man's got no style

what he's got is a grudge, comin' my way.

Owes me money, know that I can spin a tale or two.

Seems like it'd be easier for him just to pay you the money.

- Or set me up. - Wanna hear my theory?

- Talk to me quick. - New talent in town.

Wild card.

Somebody crazy enough to sh**t a cop in the back.

- I'm gonna start lookin'. - Slow your row, he's mine.

I'll find the loose marble.

And I don't wanna trip over anybody on the way.

Ergo, you tell Belson sergeant to stay off me

this paranoia's get real jumpy.

I'll tell him.

[dramatic music]

[instrumental music]

(Spenser) The old cliche is true

that the real business in America

isn't done at the office.

It's conducted on golf courses.

And around poker tables.

Except in the case of hoods

they take care of business over food.

[mumbles]

A man is judged by the company he keeps.

And by his tolerance for interruption.

, that's a good year. Oh! I'm sorry, there--

No, Al! Al.

Gentlemen, please, would you excuse us for a moment?

What's going on, Spenser?

Any one of those guys snaps his fingers

you'd be out on the sidewalk looking like a footprint.

And they look like such nice guys.

'I wanna know who set up Hawk for the Quirk sh**ting?'

I didn't. Look..

Hawk made a little mistake, but it's over.

'If I had a score to settle with him'

'I wouldn't waste time with a set up'

I'd put him in a hole.

- Spenser. - Frank.

You wouldn't be carryin' a piece on you, would you, Tommy?

- Frisk him. - Belson, what do you want?

- You got no right-- - I got rights.

And I'll read you yours in the car.

- You're under arrest. Cuff him. - But I wanna talk to my lawyer.

Hey, we got phones downtown. Get him out of here.

What's goin' on, Frank?

He had some outstanding traffic violations.

'I'm just helpin' our fine court system'

'if that's alright with you.'

Traffic violations?

You heard me, sergeant!

I wouldn't tell you if rain is wet

without consulting my lawyer.

Alright, let's try this again, Flaherty!

Hawk came out of your house yesterday--

[knock on window]

You're gonna cut a deal with us, Tommy.

You better do it now before we find Hawk.

You think about that.

What is going on here, sergeant?

You go out without a court order

and you drag a man down here?

- By the book, I had warrants. - For traffic violations.

Well, I've got a bribery case that could

put him away for years.

You risk everything--

I was just askin' him some questions

on what he knows about Marty's sh**ting.

Based on what evidence, sergeant?

I'm developing the evidence, counselor!

I'm askin' him some questions.

- Normal police procedure. - What about his lawyer?

Well, it was lunchtime, he was probably eating.

Well, I guess he's finished lunch, because he's here now.

And he's threatening to move

to have all the indictments against his client dropped

unless Flaherty's released within the next ten minutes!

- The law says-- - Don't tell me about the law!

I'm telling you.

I am not gonna let your strong armed tactics

ruin my case against Flaherty.

Whose side are you on anyway, lady?

What is this case of yours? That guy tried to k*ll Marty Quirk!

Prove it! Get me the evidence

and I'll add attempted m*rder to the charge.

But until you can show me some evidence of complicity

or at least conspiracy, cut Flaherty loose!

[dramatic music]

[instrumental music]

(Spenser) Quirk had once told me he figured Tommy Flaherty

netted to grand a week in the protection racket.

Since a friend of mine named Max

was one of Flaherty's victims

I thought it might be interesting

to see who picked up the money.

Maxy, my man, how's it goin'?

Who the hell are you?

I am Tyrone Blackwell.

And I am handling collections now for Mr. Flaherty.

Never heard of you.

Well, you're hearin' plenty right now, chump.

Or do I have to jump up and down on your ears?

- No. - Huh?

No. No. No.

Well, now, you start, uh

digging for Mr. Flaherty's money.

And don't you hold back one thin dime on me, Max.

Or the very next time I come in here..

...I'm gonna do that to your whole freakin' store.

Till, uh, Friday, Max.

My man.

My lady loves these things, Maxy.

[instrumental music]

- I'll take care of this, Max. - Thanks, Spenser.

[speaking in foreign language]

[dramatic music]

- I got nothin'. - I found him.

A guy named Tyrone Blackwell.

[grunts] Blackwell! You go call that undertaker.

- Well, listen to me. - What more I gotta hear?

Car, clothes, piece like man, dark knight, Tyrone Blackwell.

Even Belson's man can figure out how Quirk went down.

Look, we could use this wild man to get Flaherty.

I don't give a damn about Flaherty.

I'mma get the man that took my name.

Look, we play it smart, we can get 'em both.

Yeah, it better happen fast 'cause I got a summit meetin'

with Blackwell. Tyrone Blackwell!

Name look good on a Tombstone Jack. Ah!

[dramatic music]

[instrumental music]

What I need are your surveillance reports

from Flaherty's collection routes.

I just can't give these to you, Spenser.

They're official documents.

It'll lead us to who sh*t Marty.

And that's the only way to cool Belson down.

You said yourself he's endangering your investigation.

I know, but..

[phone rings]

Fiore.

[indistinct chatter on phone]

[exhales]

When did it happen?

[indistinct chatter on phone]

- Thanks for calling. - 'Yeah, bye.'

What's this new collector's name?

Blackwell.

- Tyrone Blackwell. - Is he a local?

No. We don't know who brought him into the town.

Rita?

Laura d*ed an hour ago.

I was gonna call her this morning and I..

[sighs] I mean, I have other friends, but..

...no one like Laura that I could talk to.

What does it say about a person..

...who's only had one really close friend since college?

I'd say you're very lucky.

Most people never have a friend like that.

Oh, here.

I hope to God that these can do some good.

And I hope that Lieutenant Quirk pulls through.

Rita, I'm sorry.

[sobbing]

[mellow music]

(Spenser) Time, that's what it's usually all about.

Rita needed time to grieve in Providence

as she paid her last respects to her friend.

Hawk and I needed time to turn

Tyrone and Flaherty against each other.

(Frank) 'Coming!'

(Spenser) And Frank was roaring ahead

sure that time had run out for Hawk.

Why don't you rake your leaves?

[sighs] What a way to start the day.

How about some coffee?

I got instant, the water's hot.

- Instant? - Take it or leave it.

- Hawk's not the guy. - Save it, will you, Spenser?

Look, if he sh*t Marty, he wouldn't be hangin' around.

The hell he wouldn't. Hawk thinks he owns this town.

He also wouldn't miss from feet, you know that, Frank.

What are we talkin' about here? The angel Gabriel?

We're talkin' about a hired g*n.

We're talkin' about a guy that lives

in an roll house up on a hill.

You think he's livin' like this?

What are you sayin'? He's guilty because he has a nice house?

- Come on, Frank. - No.

I'm sayin' he's laughin' at us

'cause we play by the rules.

He's not laughin' at you.

He doesn't even hate you because you think he iced Marty Quirk.

But if you try to take him

he'll draw on ya..

...and he won't miss.

Nice try, Spenser.

But this time Hawk pays up.

You tell him it's just a matter of time.

How's Marty?

He's still on the edge.

He, uh, stopped the bleeding, but..

Next hours will tell.

[mellow music]

(Spenser) I wanted the leverage of driving a wedge

between Flaherty and his new money man, Tyrone Blackwell.

So Hawk and I decided to play a little sting game

called "Collecting For The Collector."

Hey, fellas, can I help you with something?

Yeah, we're looking for a little super service.

Well, you came to the right place.

Hey, you guys can't hold me up.

Hey, don't you know Tommy Flaherty?

Yeah, we know Tommy Flaherty.

Mr. Tyrone Blackwell collects for Mr. Flaherty.

We collect for Mr. Blackwell.

Hey, I don't pay no protection under protection.

You do now.

We'll be back on Friday and I want a grand from you

because that's not enough, you understand?

Yeah.

[dramatic music]

[engine cranking]

[dialing]

Yeah, uh, listen, this is Lou Byers.

Yes, no, Lou Byers.

Now, listen, I got an urgent message for Mr. Flaherty.

[dramatic music]

You got a lot of nerve coming back here at all.

What are you talkin' about, man?

You must think I'm deaf, dumb and blind.

Do you think my people wouldn't tell me you're skimming?

Skimming? Here, count it.

'It's all there, it's even up from yesterday.'

You lyin' piece of dirt.

[grunting]

Okay, come on, make a move. Watch me cut the man.

'Take out the piece, throw it in the bush.'

Flaherty, you got a beef with me

you talk to me, you understand that, man?

People have been calling me.

They say you got two guys working for you.

You've been collecting on your own.

That's a bunch of bull!

You get those people to say that in front of my face.

Okay, I believe you.

You damn bet your life you believe me.

I know a set-up when I see one.

I'm not gonna have an animal like that around me.

Get some help and get rid of him.

[tires screeching]

[instrumental music]

Make sure they clean the inside windows this time, huh?

Yes, sir.

[engine revving]

[expl*si*n]

[dramatic music]

[knock on door]

[knocking continues]

- Who is it? - 'It's Tom Flaherty, Spenser.'

'I'm alone.'

- What do you want? - We need to talk.

Tyrone Blackwell, my new associate..

...he blew up my car.

Murph was k*lled outright.

Eddie and Angelo quit this afternoon.

How do you know it's Blackwell?

I saw him.

He knew I put a hit out on him

after he came at me with a Kn*fe.

My guys blew the first buff they took at him.

Good help is hard to come by these days.

So Blackwell wires my car.

It was blind luck I wasn't k*lled.

That's a real sad story, you're breakin' my heart.

I need help, Spenser.

I don't do bodyguard work.

And if I did, I wouldn't do it for you.

I'm talking about protection.

Blackwell sh*t Marty Quirk.

- I'm giving him to you. - Why me?

- 'Why not the cops?' - Because I can't prove it.

And by the time they mount a full investigation..

Look..

...I need this guy off the street.

He's your problem, Flaherty.

Don't give me that, Spenser.

You want this guy as badly as I do.

'I'm giving him to you as a freebie.'

Tyrone's trying to take over my..

Protection operation.

And he'll go on making collections

as long as he thinks he's got me on the run.

When's the next collection?

He's meeting one of my guys tonight.

[instrumental music on TV]

[music stops]

[g*n cocks]

I talk, you listen.

I got some pressing business in the street.

Sick of your shadow on my neck. Drop it.

Or I'll leave your brains in some Boston gutter.

Yeah, sh*t in the back like you done Marty?

Spenser warned you once, Sergeant Frankie

but you're not gettin' it.

Either you find some hard evidence

that I laid the hammer on Quirk, or get off the phone.

I saw you.

You saw a tall brown man in the dark of the night.

And the moon's made out of green cheese.

I hear you, Sergeant Frankie.

Your boy Quirk went down and you feel you have a score to settle.

Well, that horse of justice you're riding runnin' dead last.

No. No, I'm way out in front of you, Hawk.

Flaherty's whole operation is coming apart at the seams

and it's only a matter of time before

he's gotta finger you to save himself.

Last time, myopic man, I don't pop cops

but you keep charging at me and we're gonna be

all up in a nursery rhyme.

[sighs] I'll take my chances.

Take 'em in court, where you got a sh*t.

You make another move at me and the sh*t'll be mine.

And this time, I'll take it.

[clicks switch]

[dramatic music]

[dog barks in a distance]

[pants]

(Spenser) I'm dancing as fast as I can.

The perfect phrase to describe my last few days.

I felt like a pinball bouncing from the obsessive vengeance

of Belson to the coiled rage of Hawk.

From a bedside visual for Marty Quirk

to serving as witness to the sorrow and loss

experienced by Rita.

Yet the music was slowing, the dance almost done.

Our sting had turned Blackwell against Flaherty.

A gangland empire was unraveled.

What remained was to remove a madman from the streets.

Remember what I said.

We take Blackwell alive unless there's trouble.

And we do it my way.

Get out of the car.

It ain't happening. This is gonna be a quick pick up.

Let's go.

[tire screeching]

[dramatic music]

Missed him.

We run this piece of garbage in, then we go after Blackwell.

Not we, me. Tyrone Blackwell's mine.

And this boy ain't going in either.

I got a job for him.

Now, you go find your Blackwell and whatever hole he's in

and you tell him it's time for the climax. Anytime, anywhere.

Just the two of us.

[speaking in foreign language]

[grunts]

You could walk right into a trap.

It'll never happen.

You see, this wahoo man has one tragic flaw

he thinks he can take me.

He tried ten years ago.

It's me he wants and it's me he's gonna get.

This is now a soliloquy, Spenser.

I still think you should let me back you up.

You're not hearin' me, babe.

Nobody dressed like you sh*t a cop in the back.

Man, knowing me now got me running and hidin'.

That's not the way I live.

A man responsible for that got to pay.

You've got to pay for your transgressions.

[intense music]

(Spenser) I realized years ago that even in my lifetime

I would never fully understand Hawk.

I did know however that much of the fuel that powered him

through life was a smoldering controlled anger.

When that anger erupted, as it surely would toward

Tyrone Blackwell, it would come as a frightening force.

[dramatic music]

- Spenser. - Frank.

Well, ballistics don't lie.

The g*n we took off Hawk wasn't the one that sh*t Marty.

You invite me down here to share your latest theory?

Oh. Come on, Spenser, give me a break, will you?

I'm not proud of going off half-cock like that.

I called you down because I just wanted to--

Look, if this is an apology, save it for somebody else.

Yeah, you're right.

Uh, the DA's office is cancelling the warrant on Hawk.

And I also need some information about this guy Tyrone Blackwell.

I got a description of him from one of Flaherty's hoods.

Any idea where he might be?

You know the shark named Escobar?

Oh, yeah, he's a real cockroach.

- Ask him about Blackwell. - Where you going?

Got some unfinished business with Flaherty. Happy hunting.

(Tom) 'What deal?'

(Rita) The deal you agreed to on the phone.

Changed my mind.

(Spenser) 'This is no time to get cute, Flaherty.'

Let's just stop tiptoeing here, okay, Spenser.

What? Did you think I lost my years on the street?

You and I both know Tyrone's going up against Hawk today.

My money's on Hawk.

Blackwell's a memory, no more problems.

[scoffs]

No matter who wins, you lose.

If Hawk takes Tyrone out..

...you think he's just gonna close the book?

You think Hawk has a bad memory, that he's not gonna remember

who hired Blackwell in the first place?

Who didn't tell the cops it was Blackwell who sh*t Marty Quirk.

Don't kid yourself, Flaherty.

After Hawk takes care of Tyrone..

...your problems are just beginning.

What do you want from me?

Names, dates, everything on the original indictments.

And I want what you know of the sh**ting of Lieutenant Quirk.

And in return.

Protective custody through the trail.

'Maybe even a witness program after.'

If the court thinks it's warranted.

I want immunity.

- Forget it. - You're talking prison.

She's talking about you staying alive.

[sighs]

I'm ready. How do you want to do this?

Hey. What the..

I want Tyrone Blackwell.

Hey, man, take it easy.

- I don't know where he is. - You better start thinking.

Forget about Blackwell, man.

Hawk is going to blow him up.

Yeah, you got ten seconds to tell me where

or your arm's coming right off.

[intense music]

[door creaks]

[music continues]

Showtime, Hawk.

You still don't know who the enemy is.

That b*llet you caught ten years ago

should have been in your heart.

You missed your chance.

I'm gonna give you another.

Generous.

Take your bow.

[sighs]

[chuckles]

[intense music]

[g*nshots]

[groans]

You missed again, Hawk.

[music continues]

Shut up.

Hawk.

'Hawk.'

Don't come any closer, Hawk, or I'll drop this man.

'You hear me.'

You can't pop him then pop me fast enough.

We're gonna find out.

All you holding is an overzealous policeman

who's been chasing me all over town.

So you better get yourself a better hostage, wahoo man.

You ain't gonna sh**t this man.

'That'll make you a real cop k*ller.'

We've got ourselves a standoff.

You know my g*n go through two easy as one.

Hawk, don't.

Don't sh**t.

[g*nsh*t]

[dramatic music]

I felt that b*llet go by my cheek.

I thought you were gonna k*ll me.

I didn't.

[sighs]

Oh, listen, Hawk, I gotta thank..

Hey.

It took two more months before

Marty Quirk could go back to work full time.

But three weeks after he was discharged

he was there in court to testify against Flaherty.

His lawyers were good, but they didn't have a chance

against a tough Irish cop in a wheelchair.

[instrumental music]

Uh, see here we go.

Now, this is, this is, uh, Steve..

[both laugh]

...and this is Benny, I kept, I kept getting them mixed up.

So I better take them back.

Hey, Doug, would you cook these babies.

Oh.

[laughs]

You know, the one on the left had a mean look in his eye.

- I think he's after me. - Oh.

Do you know how long it's been since I really laughed?

Oh, I'm glad I could help.

Laura would have loved that entrance.

Well, it's nice to hear you talk about her with a smile.

It feels nice.

It's almost as if I didn't want the pain to stop.

You were afraid of forgetting her.

- Yeah. - You won't, you know.

What passes is the sorrow..

...the memory of Laura is yours to keep.

I'm finally starting to realize that.

She was such a big part of my life.

Such a special friend, to talk to, to laugh with.

- To love. - Everybody needs that.

I know I do.

I want that sort of friend.

- And.. - And?

And I was just thinking wouldn't it be nice

if it were you.

Hey.

Sign me up.
