(male narrator) Tonight, on "Spenser For Hire.."

It's hard on me, Kevin. to see you here.

I want to protect my son.

Your son took mine, Cavanaugh, he's got to pay.

Mob chiefs aren't big on making deals.

If Gus tries to hit me, you're gonna stop him, right?

[tires screeching]

[g*n f*ring]

You watch your mouth, Hawk.

Anytime you want to You feeling focused, now leave.

[theme music]

[instrumental music]

(Spenser) As jobs go, this one couldn't have started better.

A chance to escape the city for a day

and a drive to the Canadian border.

All I had to do was bring back an ex-cop

who was hiding out under a witness protection program.

Gutsy guy Nick Cavanaugh, he went undercover in the mob

and sent the boss' favorite son to prison.

Now, he was returning secretly to visit his own father.

And if the mob got wind of it, well, then we're into vendettas

blood feuds and late night visits from guys named

Benny the Frog, Baltimore Pete.

On second thought, maybe this job wasn't so terrific.

Last chance.

Sure you want to do this?

My father's dying, Spenser.

What do you want me to do? Send him a card?

It's not gonna make him feel better

if Gus Harley puts a large hole in your head.

It's been two years, Spenser.

How long am I supposed to hide up there?

As long as Gus hang on to this.

Try forever.

If Gus tries to hit me, you're gonna stop him, right?

That's why my father hired you.

Gus employs about pistoleros

you got me.

Makes the odd about - .

Comforting.

[intense music]

[engine starts]

[music continues]

[car horn blaring]

Hey, buddy, you got any jumper cable?

- What's he got? - a*t*matic.

[grunts]

[g*nsh*t]

[tires screeching]

[tires screeching]

[groans]

[g*n f*ring]

[tires screeching]

Kind of moving violations.

You fixed the ticket?

[scoffs] Maybe.

[instrumental music]

They tried to hit us.

Where?

Reed Street by the Dover Station.

I think there were six guys.

How could they know?

If I had to guess, I'd say they had your phone wired

maybe your whole house, you're going to have it swept.

Can you do that?

I'll send you someone, a guy named Dickey Forbes.

Good. Do it promptly.

I'm sorry, Nicky, but you should go back.

No, dad, I won't.

I'm here to stay this time.

Nicky, we agreed, just a quick trip.

So, I can run again?

No, dad, I spent three years undercover.

Two years as a security guard in Toronto

at five years being somebody I'm not.

I'm coming home again, dad.

I want to bring Sarah and the kids home again for good.

Yeah, I know, Nicky, I know, I know.

- Spenser? - I can't keep him alive.

I can slow down the process, I can up the ante

but eventually Gus will k*ll him.

He knows that.

Look, I can hire all the help you need.

You can hire the British fleet if you want, it won't matter.

Eventually Gus will k*ll him.

We have to get to Harley, we have to make a deal.

You know Gus Harley?

'Just by reputation.'

Mob chiefs aren't big on making deals.

Everybody deals, Spenser.

I've been making deals in the States since

and I want to see him.

I want you to take care of Nicky

and I want you to set up a meeting with Gus Harley.

And on the weekends, I'll take care of the situations

in the Middle East.

Go on.

We've got to find you a place to stay.

You can't stay with your father.

You can't stay with me.

They obviously know about me.

- How about a hotel? - I've got better idea.

- I've got two problems. - You got it down to two?

Uh, two you can help me with.

About nobody can help you with.

Yeah, but who's counting?

I need to stash this guy with you for a while.

who's after him? Cops or robbers?

Gus Harley.

Damn, no wonder you come to me.

And I need to set up a meeting with Gus.

Meeting to do what?

Try to keep him from acing this guy.

- Got any connection with Gus? - Maybe.

So, what do you think?

I can get you together?

Dig this here Gus be a funny guy

very sentimental, very tough.

Hmm. Much like myself.

Bad temper. No scruples.

Much like yourself.

- Do you like him? - Negative.

- Do you trust him? - Keeps his word.

Well, just for you, me and Nick.

His father is Emmett Cavanaugh.

Judge Cavanaugh? My, my, my the plot thickens.

Gus can bring who he wants, but no sh**ting just talking.

Can you do it?

- I've got a safe place. - Where?

It wouldn't be safe if I told you where it was

now, would it? No, unh-unh.

Look at the ducks.

[instrumental music]

(Spenser) Susan had been gone a year now and I was perfectly used to it.

Except sometimes when I saw someone who looked like her.

Just didn't happen more than once or twice a day.

If I wasn't as hard as a sheet metal screw

I would have had a lump in my throat for a minute.

Besides if Susan were ever to come back to Boston

she'd call me.

Fifteen minutes, Mr. Harley.

How are you, Kevin?

Everybody treating you okay?

Like a prince, pop. You have a long reach.

It's hard on me, Kevin, to see you here.

I know, pop, it hurts. I miss you too.

Just get through it, son.

We all need you.

You've got to start replacing me when you get out.

There'll be time to talk about that later.

[scoffs] I'm getting old, Kevin.

And Georgie..

Georgie is good in the fight.

And he's the oldest.

He has no management skills, Kevin.

And it's my right to decide who runs my business.

You run it, pop.

We'll worry about the rest when I get out.

[instrumental music]

Hawk.

Are you looking for work, Hawk?

Emmett Cavanaugh says he wants to talk to you.

What, about how his kid stuck my brother in jail?

Says he has a deal for you about his son.

When does he want this meeting?

Anytime you ready.

You're gonna listen to this, pop?

You're gonna meet these people? You listen to Hawk?

Since when do we started listening to people like Hawk?

You sure you didn't find him on the front steps, Gus?

What the hell is that supposed to mean?

- Georgie. - Huh?

It means you're about much like your father

as a beetle's like a dragon.

Now, you watch your mouth, Hawk.

Means you ain't got no style, Georgie.

Means your word ain't worth ain't nothing.

Anytime you want to, G Man.

Any way you want it. You feeling focused now. Leap!

JD, take Georgie outside

and walk him around until we get finished here.

- Father's orders. - No, pop!

Go, Georgie. Go!

Come on, Georgie, outside.

Come on.

You guarantee this meeting, Hawk?

Affirmative.

I'll do it.

I'll bring JD and Georgie and maybe Ollie.

Me, Spenser, Cavanaugh and his sons.

Spenser, the bodyguard. I hear he's a friend of yours.

Mm-hmm.

[scoffs] he does good work.

This afternoon, o'clock at the abandoned tea station.

No sh**ting.

We'll be there.

[instrumental music]

(Spenser) I knew I was working for Emmett Cavanaugh

I could tell by his name on the check.

But what I was hired to do kept changing.

First, I was supposed to protect Emmett's kid

when he insisted on coming home.

Then I was supposed to protect him

when he insisted on staying.

Then I was supposed to organize a meeting with the guy

I was protecting the kid from.

Shuttle diplomacy.

Me and Henry Kissinger.

Of course I was bigger than Henry

and better looking.

I always felt we'd meet one day, Gus

I just, uh, never thought it could be like this.

What do you want?

I want a deal.

I want to stop things here.

I want to protect my son.

Your son took mine, Cavanaugh, he's got to pay.

My son was doing his job.

That should mean something even to you.

A man does his job, he should be respected.

Don't matter, job or no job, none of it matters

'your kid took my kid away from me.'

'I got to put him away. You understand?'

I don't take care of that, things don't balance.

There's no, there's no justice.

He's my only son, Gus.

There's gotta be a way to deal.

There's got to be a way, Gus. The way to even things out.

Don't beg, dad. We don't need to beg people like this.

Hell you don't.

Justice doesn't have to be an eye for an eye, Gus.

There's other ways to even it up.

Okay, I'll listen.

No, pop.

What do you got to deal?

[g*n sh*t]

[groans]

[groans]

No g*ns. I said no g*ns.

- 'Pop.' - 'I said no g*ns.'

No g*ns.

(Spenser) Maybe Emmett should have hired Henry Kissinger.

[instrumental music]

Well, it hadn't been too effective.

Plan B called for me to take a shower

Eat a quart of French vanilla and lie on my back

in bed until I fell asleep or thought of plan C

whichever came first.

[intense music]

Hello, there, cutie.

- You come here often? - I used to.

You know what they say, home is where when you go there.

They have to take you in.

How'd you get in?

Old habits die hard.

I remembered where you kept your key at the firehouse.

You keep it in the same place here.

And you just walked in?

How'd you find me?

First I went to the firehouse. You were gone.

The city recommissioned it.

It's time for me to move on anyway.

But you're still there on the phonebook..

...under "Investigators." "Private."

- Yeah. Spenser with an "S.." - Spenser with an "S.."

Like the poet.

I guess I've always been pretty easy to find.

Was the rest of what you were looking for was easy?

I remember telling you that I never quite knew

why I was leaving.

But when I went I had to.

I had to know I could live without you.

Because until I knew that I could never live with you.

Looks like you got the hang of it pretty good.

Yes, I learned that and I learned something else..

...that I didn't want to.

I pretty much learned the same thing.

I think you knew that all along.

That's you, Spenser.

You're full of passions and certainties.

You grew up a long time ago.

'You know who you are and what you want.'

'What matters more and what matters less.'

You were so easy to just fill myself up with you.

You cast a long shadow, Spenser, and I was disappearing.

I had to find enough of me to survive in your life.

I had to know that I could live with the fear of what you do.

And know that I could go on alone if I lost you.

And now it seems that all I really knew when I was leaving..

...is how very much I love you.

I loved you enough to let you break my heart.

It's funny..

...you know, all the marathon talking we did

before you left for San Francisco

it never really hit me till that date.

'Loading the boxes in the van..'

'...putting you in the cab like you were going off'

'for some weekend.'

Then I came home, got a beer out of the fridge

turn on the television, the game was on.

Sox leading by four games. Can you imagine?

'But I didn't watch it.'

'It still smell your hair.'

'See your eyes..'

You were with me for a second.

[scoffs]

I-I realized I was staring out the window

watching the sun go down

and listening to the planes take off over the city and I..

..kept looking and wondering which one you were on.

And then..

...I realized I was alone.

You aren't alone anymore.

- If you want-- - 'No.'

No, Susan, there can't be any ifs.

[sighs] I want to stay to talk, but I..

No..

There'll be time..

I should go.

Listen, uh, uh, what about breakfast tomorrow?

I still make a pretty mean omelet.

I'd like that.

Tomorrow.

[instrumental music]

It's good to see you.

[instrumental music]

You called me, I'm here. What do you want?

Gus, I'm dying.

we all are.

Well, I'm going little faster than most.

I didn't know.

That doesn't matter.

What does is that we can still work something out.

Yesterday was a mistake.

Our people didn't start up.

Your boy Georgie started up.

I know. Georgie is a hot-headed kid. He got out of line.

I'm sorry.

It's not your fault. Georgie got crazy, not you.

He's my son. They're my people.

I gave my word. I can't control them. It's my fault.

Then leave them out of it.

Gus, we're two old men who only want our sons at home.

Yeah. My business, your business

what the hell does any of it mean?

We both lost our boys.

Well, then, let's help each other.

You keep Georgie and your people away from Nick.

Kevin is eligible for parole in a month.

I will try to help him get it.

You know, I've got some clout in this state.

Yeah, I guess you do.

It's worth a try.

[instrumental music]

(Spenser) When it comes to the big things

change never seems to come slowly.

It doesn't just tip-toe up and ring a bell.

No, it marches on over and blows the door off the hinges.

Susan's return was what a shock to say the least.

Give or take a few thousand, there were a million things

we had to say to each other.

At the moment, however, someone else wanted my attention.

Judge Cavanaugh's been trying to phone you all morning.

Phones are off the hook.

Judge Cavanaugh says he wants to see you now

says he has a deal for Gus Harley.

I can't right now.

Your phone's off the hook, you won't see a paying client

since when did you become the hermit of Charlestown?

Uh, do you want to get that?

- What? - The door.

- Somebody's at the door. - Uh-huh.

Since when did I become the butler

from the hermit of Charlestown?

[chuckles]

Some days the fish do in fact bite.

Sometimes your career runneth over.

I knew you've missed me.

The world wasn't so cold, I'd have missed you too.

You planning to stay.

Yes.

- I need Spenser now - No. Not now.

It's okay. Really.

You go ahead.

- You will wait? - Right here.

It might take a couple of hours.

I can wait a couple of hours.

Couple days, or weeks.

"I could not love thee half as much. Loved I not Honor more."

Oh, you silver-tongued devil, you.

Welcome back.

I have Gus Harley's hand on it, Spenser.

You got Georgie's?

Gus can control him.

Now, that should cover you including expenses.

If not, just say so.

Check's fine, judge.

But I think you'll make a mistake.

The last time you made a deal with Gus

it ended in a sh**t.

Now, you just don't like the fact that, uh

couple of old hands can do some old-fashioned

horse trading, Spenser.

'But what it comes down to is we just don't need'

'you or Hawk anymore.'

Because you're gonna get Kevin out of jail, right?

Exactly, and they will end the vendetta against Nick.

Look, I'm dying. I'll do anything to give Nick

his life back.

I am saving my son.

And what if you can't get Kevin paroled?

My father will get it done, Spenser.

You're dealing with the wrong guy.

Gus keeps his word, but Gus is old and Georgie..

Georgie's unpredictable.

If we, uh, run into any problem, Spenser, we'll call.

(Spenser) Normally, my intuitions serves me well about every months

and I'd made a good guess only six months ago

so I wasn't due but something felt wrong.

And it kept coming back to how Nick blew the whistle

on Kevin Martin.

Time to go to the primary source

before I turn my back on this one.

Seeing Kevin wasn't a problem

we've crossed path a couple of times before.

Nothing personal, fact was I sort of liked it.

You know who nailed you?

Nick Cavanaugh.

Hmm.

He's going to pay.

Just because he was doing his job? Come on, Kevin.

He pretended to be one of us, get to b my friend

Georgie's friend, then he betrayed us.

No, no, no, actually he betrayed you.

- That surprise you? - A little.

You didn't think it could happen to us.

Why? I mean, your family is not into this door-to door

Bible business, you know.

A lot of people are looking to put you away.

- We always knew. - You knew, huh?

Sure. We had a guy inside in my father's pocket.

A cop?

[laughing] You think that can't happen?

I'm older than that. I just think it's uncommon

you should tell me, you know.

It doesn't matter now. He's out of business.

They caught him, canned him quietly.

Yeah, I'll even tell you his name. Lee Kazek.

- You know? - No.

So, how come old Lee didn't save your tail?

I don't know.

He must have brought Nicky in from west Podunk.

We never got a whisper.

Yeah. Yeah, bad luck I guess, huh?

But it's curious, you know.

Don't you ever wonder why you're the only guy who got caught?

Guess I was getting more and more into the day to day stuff

I was high profile.

Easy target. Ancient history now.

My old man's got a deal with Emmett Cavanaugh.

Yeah, that's what I hear.

Be sure, Spenser, the parole works out.

Hey, Kevin, look, that's the judge's area, you know.

If it doesn't work out, Nicky will be needing

your services badly, okay?

Hmm.

You have a nice jail time, alright?

[indistinct chatter]

[groans]

Yeah, I will ask someone over there to take possession.

Yeah, yeah, will take care of that too.

Pa..

Kevin is dead.

- Kevin? - Yeah, pa.

They shanked him in the yard.

Kevin's dead.

We'll even it up, pa.

That-that-that private cop Spenser, he was there

just before it happened.

I say he set him up.

I say everybody dies.

The people who put him in there

the guys set him up, the guy who shanked him..

Everybody, pa.

[instrumental music]

[instrumental music]

[indistinct chatter]

- Hey, Frank.. - Spenser..

I'm glad I caught up with you.

Hello, Susan, I was just..

- Hello, Susan? - Hello, Frank.

- You with Spenser? - Yes, Frank.

Susan's back, and Spenser's got her.

Actually, Ducky, I think that should be Silverman's back

and Spenser's got her.

'You know, like Gabel's back and Garson's got her?'

Now, if you want the parallel to hold up perfectly

you'd have to say that Spenser's back and Silverman's got him.

But that's not true, I'm the one who's back.

Good point. Besides the meter's off. Not enough alliteration.

Oh, boy, I don't know what you two were talking about

but then again I never did.

Hey, it's nice to see you back, Susan.

Thanks.

Uh, Frank, something must have brought you here, Frank, right?

Oh, yeah, yeah, Spenser, uh, Kevin Harley is dead.

- What? - 'Yeah.'

'Somebody got him in the yard with a homemade Kn*fe'

about half hour after you left.

Listen, Spenser, you know Gus, I think it's gonna hit the fan.

Yeah, then there's Georgie. I think we got a fan full.

- Watch your back. - Thanks.

I think it's gonna be perfect.

Well, wasn't this where you bailed out last time?

Yes, right after you said

"Susan, I've got to leave you for a while.

It's dangerous and I don't want to involve you."

Oh, I was much less pompous than that.

Oh, of course.

Susan, I have to leave you for a while.

This dangerous and I don't want to involve you.

Yes, that's more like it.

- And you bail out? - No, I've already done that.

This is more than what you do, cupcake. This is what you are.

- What you are is who I love. - You sound like Yogi Bear.

What's really scary about that is that you understand me.

Yes.

So, drive me home and take care of this

and when you get back, I'll see you.

Unless you buy the farm first.

No farms. You got to feed all those furry little animals.

[instrumental music]

(Spenser) 'Think about it, Nick.'

'Who'd want to put a shank in Gus Harley's kid?'

(Nick) 'He got a death wish.'

(Emmett) 'Gus had more power inside than out.'

'Kevin was living better in the can'

'than I was in witness protection.'

(Spenser) 'So, how come he's dead?'

'Nobody on the inside cares.'

(Emmett) 'Now, what are you saying, Spenser?'

I'm saying it was an execution.

Nobody saw anything, nobody saying a word.

You think if some con had a chance to blow the whistle

on Gus Harley's son's k*ller

He'll pass up that chance?

Kevin was k*lled in the yard in broad daylight.

Why come after us? We didn't do it.

Gus gave me his word.

Would you work on Kevin's parole if Nick here had been k*lled?

And I see your point.

I'm not sure that Gus is the one running things anymore.

Georgie?

Yeah. Maybe.

All I know is we've got to take care of things pretty quick

or a lot of people are gonna be dead

and some of them would be us.

What do you-what do you want to do?

Well, we've got to figure out who would profit

by Kevin's death?

Who supplied you the information that helped you put him away?

I never knew.

I infiltrated Gus' organization okay but..

...and I, I got hints, maybes, possibilities.

'One day I got a phone call from a woman.'

'She told me she knew I was undercover'

'she said she had a score to settle with Kevin.'

And if I was patient, she'd give me everything I needed to nail.

- Did you ever meet her? - 'No.'

She'd call me every few weeks, probably from a payphone

and tell me stuff and it would pan out.

'The information was solid.''

The cop on the payroll, she ever give you his name?

No. Not a word about that stuff.

I was afraid I might get blown but, uh, nothing happened.

'You know, mystery lady just kept feeding me info.'

Nick, where did you work before you went undercover?

- Burglary. - Boston?

(Nick) 'Sure.'

You know, a cop, an ex-cop named Lee Kazek?

Sure. I never met him but I know the name.

He was on the organized crime unit.

Do you know where I might find him?

Not off-hand. I heard he quit.

He used to live on a South Shore someplace.

Still does.

Do you know him?

He was on the take from everybody.

He shouldn't be too hard to find.

[instrumental music]

(Spenser) Hawk had a way of finding people that was truly unique.

He'd run his fingers through the Yellow Pages

then he'd rip in half.

That usually got someone's attention.

In this case a South Shore bookie who gave us

the address we wanted.

Hawk and I decided on a variation of good cop, bad cop.

Good cop, demented cop.

So, Hawk, how you hittin' them, baby?

Whoa! Look at all this stuff.

Let's, uh, not screw around here, Lee.

'I know you're dirty when you're on the the cops.'

I know you were chipping to the Harleys

basically I think you're a piece of bad liver.

Hey, you watch your mouth, Jack.

Who the hell are you coming in here ranking me?

Well, I'm the Tooth Fairy. I loosen them.

I want to know what you told the Harleys about Nicky Cavanaugh.

Take a flight..

Hey, Spenser, easy, man, be cool now.

[indistinct chatter]

You're making me real mad, pal.

- Tell him about me, man. - Be cool, man!

I told you I know Lee way back then

Oh, well, if you wanna know him in the future

you tell him about me, huh!

'You tell me how I get when people don't tell me'

what I wanna know!

Hey, chill, chill, Superman, there's no need--

You tell him what I wanna know!

Man, you better tell him fast.

I can't keep him off you much longer.

I told him Nicky was undercover.

Who did you tell?

My go-between. A broad named Katie Barker.

Katie Barker.

Yeah, in that way I didn't have to deal with Gus or anybody.

Where does Katie Barker live?

Cambridge. North Cambridge.

North Cambridge is one of my favorite communities.

Did you know that? What street?

Uh, Linnaean, Linnaean Street.

- I don't know Linnaean Street. - We'll find it.

Thank you very much, Lee.

'Please be so kind as to keep our visit confidential.'

- Please do. - He will. You know why?

Because he doesn't want to tell them what he told us.

- You're alright? - I'm fine.

- Good. - I feel much better.

[sighs]

Been easier if she's been at home.

Probably out having dinner somewhere.

Unlike us.

There are lots of single family dwellings.

If a woman comes home and walks in, it's gotta be her, right?

Unless she has a roommate.

Stop making this so difficult.

Gonna work this time?

- Susan? - Mm-hmm.

She's changed.

Since she's been gone, I've changed the lock too

I guess.

- She's stronger. - A lot.

Needs to be hanging around with somebody like you.

[scoffs] She said the same thing.

Yeah, she's gonna feel guilty leaving you like that.

Gonna take some time for her to get past that too.

I know.

I..

How the hell do you know all these stuff?

Well, I'll know what I need to know.

Kinda like naturale rhythm, you dig?

Plus, she's done a lot of work. She, uh..

- She understands herself. - 'Strong woman.'

[indistinct chatter]

[both laughing]

Lookie here, lookie here.

Miss Katie Barker and see who her date is.

'Georgie.'

Bingo.

That's what happened, Gus.

Nick Cavanaugh went undercover.

Your tame cop, the legendary Lee Kazek

'passed that information on to one Katie Barker.'

'It turns out to be Georgie's girlfriend.'

'She must have told Georgie.'

Georgie did not pass that information on to you or Kevin.

Why not?

What did he do with it?

he framed his brother.

It's the only thing that makes any sense, Gus.

Which brings us to Kevin getting k*lled.

Right after Georgie found out that Kevin might get paroled.

Georgie had him k*lled.

No one would have dared unless it'd come from us.

That's the way it looks, Gus.

Georgie didn't want to deal.

'That's why he started trouble at the first meeting.'

He didn't want Kevin out.

He wanted the business

he didn't wanted to go to Kevin.

Like he was going to.

Kevin was always smart.

Steady.

He saw the way things are.

Now, who'll run it?

Georgie's gonna try.

He k*lled his brother.

Why should he stop there?

k*ll me?

We thought we ought to warn you.

We've worked together many times, Gus.

I know you as a man of great style

but not Georgie.

Hard thing to say, harder for you to listen to.

You stay away from Georgie, Gus, till you find somebody

'you can trust.'

It's not safe, Gus.

It's my home. It's my son.

What are you thinking?

I'm thinking that old man is walking into trouble.

You're forgetting who that old man is, that's Gus Harley

my boss, bad man.

There's one worse at home.

You in?

Georgie, I want to talk.

Yeah. What's up?

What do you want?

You had your brother k*lled, Georgie.

You had him framed, you had him k*lled.

And I know how. And I know why.

So, who dug that up? Private cop?

Not even remorse, Georgie.

Yeah, sure, remorse.

I didn't want to have to do it, you didn't give me much choice.

He was gonna get the business

the older son is supposed to take over.

- Georgie-- - This thing is mine, pop.

- You can't just give it away. - You can't have it, Georgie.

I got it already.

Ollie.

(Hawk) This is how you wanna play it.

We could go around back.

Probably sneak through the window.

You go down the chimney.

Since there's no smart way to do it, let's go through the door.

Kevin's gone, and what's left is you.

You are a ruthless man.

A man like you. Blood shows, pop.

Everything I've done, I learned from you.

Then you've learned nothing.

You didn't learn honor, you didn't learn smart.

If you take over this organization, it'll be gone

in a year.

Give it up, pop. You're an old man.

You got no people with you. Go into retirement

and go live in Florida. You just stay out of my way.

I can't get out of the way. You k*lled Kevin.

Don't make me k*ll you, pop.

Have me k*lled, you mean.

Like you had someone k*lled your brother. Such a tough guy.

Go ahead, Georgie, you k*ll me.

You squeeze it off. Go ahead, tough guy.

Drop it, Georgie.

[intense music]

There's four of us, Spenser.

Four or four hundred, you go first.

Listen, G man, we both gonna sh**t.

- Whatever happens, you die. - Georgie!

[g*nsh*t]

[groans]

[intense music]

[groans]

(Georgie) 'Pop.'

Georgie.

Gus Harley won't care what happens here now.

It's all over for him.

Except for the grief.

Yeah, in a way I feel sorry for him.

I had to live without my son for five years.

For Gus, it will be forever.

- You'll, uh, send me a bill. - My pleasure.

Include whatever he costs.

Nobody can afford whatever I cost.

My bill's with Spenser and not with you.

I'll wait outside.

[clears throat]

How's your health, judge?

Well, the, uh, doc says there's a chance for remission

but, uh..

I know.

It's grandpa, kids. You remember grandpa.

Plane from Toronto was minutes late.

Traffic in the tunnel was backed up to Suffolk Downs

but here we are.

(Nick) 'You remember grandpa.'

[ducks squawking]

(Spenser) One thing has to be settled.

I will never leave again.

If you do, you won't get far because I will come after you

and bring you home.

So, we are forever then?

Yes. Forever.

I don't know what that means exactly

except I know it's true.

Whatever happened..

...whatever will..

...we are permanent.

Yes.

Want to get married?

I don't think so.

I haven't gotten that far yet.

I only recently noticed we were forever.

[chuckles] Maybe we got to live together.

Oh, we could but I don't think we ought to.

You know what, I don't care how we live, Sus..

...as long as things that matter we are together.

There don't have to be any rules for what we mean to each other.

(Susan) Well, we've sketched out the big picture.

Now, all we have to do is work out the details.

(Spenser) I take it back about my rules as one.

(Susan) Monogamy?

- Yeah, the big M. - Absolutely.

- Forever, Sus. - Forever.
