No, Jesus.

The holy man of yours is not too popular down here.

He's not too shy about banging the heads

of pimps and pushers together

if he thinks it'll save a child.

Drug pushers, huh? You pimps!

Come on, come on, come on. I'll fight you here on your own.

I think I may have k*lled someone last night.

All I wanna know is if it's true.

- I don't know. - You have to know.

I don't care how drunk you were.

You really think he k*lled that girl?

The priest is where he belongs. I hope he rots in there.

I'm gonna prove I'm right.

You're dead, Spenser.

You're a classy guy, Frank.

Well, I know I'm a classy guy.

Yeah, the car was only bucks to rent for the day.

Hey, don't try to change the subject, Spenser.

It's still John Ritter. That's an 'R' to you.

Uh, Richard Baseheart.

- They'sa been used. - Not in this game, it hasn't.

It has to, it has to.

You remember, we're coming out of the stadium..

No!

And you said Ruth Roman.

And I said Richard Baseheart.

- He's right, Spenser. - Whose side are you on anyway?

I mean, you oughta give it up, Spenser.

There are no more odds. I'm the champ.

I keep telling ya. Nobody beats me at movie stars.

Richard Arlen.

Richard Arlen. Who's Richard Arlen?

Richard Arlen, that's right.

. "Wings." He almost won the Academy Award.

Alright. That's an 'A' to you.

Um, Alan Alda.

Alan Alda. Yech! Hate Alan Alda.

Well, I happen to like Alan Alda.

- 'Oh. he's awful.' - 'Said a lot of other people..'

No, but looks like trouble.

Hey, there's something going on.

Better stay here.

Father, need some help?

There's a boy inside who does.

(Father Mike) 'Oh, Jesus.'

Jesus, Mary..

- Let's check upstairs. - Alright

(male # ) 'Alright, folks, step back. Nothing else to see.'

Put 'em in the car.

Do you believe that, Grady?

He thought I was a customer, the little creep.

I'll be out in half an hour.

The hell of it is, he's right.

What are you doing down here, Frank? Little slumming?

Coming back from the Boston College game

we saw this going down.

Grady! Look what I found climbing out the back window.

You bookin' him?

Resisting arrest.

Assaulting a police officer.

I want to see the wife and kiddies

when they come down to bail him out.

and him trying to explain what he was doing down here.

Father Mike's housekeeper called me.

He's up there.

- Who's the girl? - She works at the shelter.

For the street kids. Used to be one herself.

Priest turned her. Father Mike.

'He started the shelter.'

Ran it for a couple of years before he b*rned out

and fell off the deep end.

Another football fan?

Yeah. So why don't you take Susan home?

It's no place for her to be hanging out.

Catch you later.

(Father Mike) 'Has reconciled the world to himself..'

How long has this been a sh**ting gallery?

[sighs] Who knows?

It floats.

Here, this week.

Last week, basement of China Harry's.

(Father Mike) 'I absolve you.'

Blot out the sins he has committed

through human weakness.

In this world he has d*ed

let him live with you forever

we ask this through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

[instrumental music]

Lost another one.

(Spenser) I'd met Father Mike in passing several years before

about the time he was starting the shelter.

I had heard he would go sometimes

days on end without sleep

if there was a kid in trouble.

He was truly one of the good guys.

I was sorry to hear that he had fallen on hard times.

Look at all these bills, Spenser.

Why don't you, uh, spare me the month-end blues

and open some wine?

(Susan) 'Just as long as I don't have to pay 'em.'

'Not good, detective.'

Telephone company, gas, electric..

Bank card!

Oh, here's a bright spot.

Edwic Mann wants to pay you ten million dollars.

Remember when a mere million would satisfy our greedy souls?

Here's one from your dad.

Why don't you open it, he's always putting stuff in there

I'm supposed to tell you anyway?

"Dear son, I hope this letter finds you well.

"I was going to phone you but I wasn't sure

"I could find the words I had to say to you.

Charlie Moon d*ed two weeks ago."

Oh..

Oh..

When we were kids, uh..

Charlie and I were best friends.

When we were , , , uh..

I guess we were never apart.

It says he was k*lled in a..

...car accident.

[instrumental music]

[sighs]

(Spenser) The loss of my friend, I knew, would haunt me.

Oddly, my thoughts turned to Father Hoyt

who had also lost someone today.

My comfort would come from warm memories.

And Susan's love.

Who, I wondered, would comfort the priest.

Another double.

You told me you were going back to the parish house

and then they called me looking for you.

- Go away, Sharon. - No, I can't.

Not when you're like this.

Don't you understand?

I am the worst thing a man can be.

Mike, you can't save every child.

He gave me his chalice.

I asked for it, but, but he..

He gave me his chalice.

You saved me.

Damn it. No, don't you, don't you see?

- I'm a bad priest. - No!

You have to get away from me, Sharon.

- No! No! - No, leave me.

My enemies. Come on out here, huh?

You p*rn! You drug pushers!

Huh? You pimps. Come on, come on, come on.

I'll fight you here on your own.

- 'Take it easy.' - 'You had enough, man.'

[instrumental music]

(Young Spenser) You got it. Watch where you're going.

You got it. You're doing swell.

Okay. You got it.

You got it. You're doing good.

Okay. Okay, pedal some more.

I'm never gonna learn, Spenser.

- You can! - I can't.

Once you get your balance, it's easy.

Why don't you face it? I'm a freak.

I'm years old and I don't even know

how to ride a crummy bike.

- You can! - I can't.

You don't try again, I'll tell everyone

you have a crush on Brenda Clark.

- You swore! - 'I don't care.'

You get back on this bike

or I'll tell everyone how mushy you get.

How you wanna kiss her.

I think I can do it, Spenser.

I can feel it. I think I'm getting the balance.

This is easy. Spenser!

Ah!

[crashing]

Are you okay?

[sighs]

[phone ringing]

[phone ringing]

[phone ringing]

Spenser.

This is Father Hoyt.

I need help.

What can I do for you, father?

I, uh..

[clears throat]

I think I may have k*lled someone last night.

[instrumental music]

(Spenser) A long time ago, in another lifetime

while I was growing up in Wyoming

I had been an altar boy.

Then somewhere through the years

like old friends, the church and I had drifted apart.

While we weren't as close as we once had been

I still felt at home here.

[indistinct chatter]

[chanting in foreign language]

(Father Mike) All my life

all I ever wanted was to be a priest.

When I was a boy, they were my heroes.

Vincent de Paul.

Thinking of him all the time.

Guess that sounds pretty stupid now, doesn't it?

Also sounds like you're feeling sorry for yourself.

That's sin too, huh?

- What happened last night? - Not yet. I..

I need to tell you some things first.

I drink.

How bad?

I can't control myself.

Does that shock you, a drunken priest?

I was under the impression they recruited

most of you fellas from the human race.

I understand you're no longer at the shelter.

How could I?

When I first started, I, I was

so full of fire, I was so sure we could make a difference

if we could just give the street kids

a roof over their heads.

I thought that's what you were doing.

Oh, we saved some kids.

But for every one we did, five more were lost.

To the pimps and the..

...drug pushers selling their death.

I kept remembering Christ said

that we should have faith

like we're children.

Only, the children were dying.

And the only way to forget was by drinking.

More and more as time went on.

Towards the end, there were whole days

that I couldn't account for.

The point is, I have a temper.

One day, a policeman, a friend

uh, came to me and he told me that I had, uh..

I'd beaten up a hooker.

Broken her jaw.

But you don't remember.

No. But..

You thought you were capable of it.

I wanted to turn myself in

but he said no, it would be better if I just went away.

'I went to the archdiocese that day'

I told him everything.

They put me in a dry-out joint for a couple of months.

Been here ever since.

Who'd you b*at up last night?

- That's why we're here, right? - I don't know.

It was after the boy.

Finding him dead.

I hadn't had a drink for almost two years until then

Truth is, I should not have been down there

I shouldn't have gone back.

So you hit the bottle.

Old dogs. Old tricks.

[sighs]

I, I can..

...remember some of the places that I was in.

Not all.

Then I woke up in an alley, it was dawn.

There was a cat looking at me.

There was blood on my clothes.

I remember just fragments.

A woman was screaming.

You know who she was?

Where you were?

No.

I'm not even sure it really happened

I hope to God it didn't.

You want me to find out if you k*lled a woman.

Yes.

You should know, I won't lie.

To you or the police, about what I find.

I wouldn't want you to.

If I've done a terrible thing

then I must accept the consequences.

If I haven't..

I have to know that too.

At least then there could still be some hope for me.

To be a good priest again.

[instrumental music]

(Spenser) I ran away from home once. I was .

And by the time my best friend Charlie Moon and I had

hitchhiked a miles to Cheyenne

we realized it wasn't a good idea.

I called my dad

Almost fighting tears.

He was there to get us in a couple of hours.

He bought us hamburgers and fries and chocolate malts

and gave us hugs.

Most of the runaways here wouldn't be so lucky.

Times have changed.

The best chance these kids have are guys like Father Mike.

Only, he had turned up broken.

Yeah, that thirsty holy man of yours

is not too popular down here.

Seems he's not too shy about banging the heads

of pimps and pushers together if he thinks it'll save a child.

Any luck on where he was last night?

So far, I've got him to the Waikiki Club at bells.

Time and my charming personality will yield further answers.

You wanna tell me why you so anxious to find out?

He thinks he might've done some damage.

What kind of damage?

With his fist.

Thinks he might've k*lled someone.

A woman.

I trust you pointed out to him

that nosin' around where you think you might've

done that kind of damage is not very clever.

He needs to know the truth.

Zsa Zsa Gabor and ZaSu Pitts.

Those are two movie stars whose names never come up in games.

That's because their first names begin with a Z

and there are no movie stars whose last names begin with Z.

- Amazing. - Ha, ha.

That's why I'm the champ.

Uh, this is part of my new diet, Spenser.

See, what I do is I get these babies back to my desk

and I cut 'em in half.

And then when I'm ready for a snack, see

I'm only taking half as much as I would

if I had a whole one.

- George Zucco. - Huh?

"Confidential Agent," "David and Bathsheba"

"Captain from Castille"

There's also Anthony Zerbe and Efrem Zimbalist.

Didn't I see you over at the zone?

[exhales] No surprise.

That's my b*at for the last couple of months.

So, you're that private cop, huh?

- Belson's pal. - Yeah, Spenser is the name.

Ramos.

Uh, off the record, uh..

Heard there was a k*lling down there last night.

Off the record, I'm selling raffle tickets.

My kids' school dinner.

A buck a piece or a $ for a book of .

Can't pass up a worthy cause like that

I'll take a book.

The only one I heard about was the kid

the priest found in the sh**ting gallery.

Heard there was a girl beaten up.

Maybe beaten to death.

You hear pretty good, Spenser.

Maybe get your crystal ball out again.

They found a woman beaten to death

in a cheap hotel room. Your partner just called it in.

What was her name?

Sharon Gibbs.

'You saw her yesterday.'

She was the one that worked in that, uh

shelter for runaways.

All I wanna know is if it's true.

- I don't know. - You have to know.

I don't care how drunk you were.

Did you know it was Sharon?

I was afraid it might be.

One of the last things I remember

was being angry with her.

Where?

Um, bar, uh..

- Waikiki Club. I was shouting-- - Did you k*ll her?

I, I honestly, I can't remember, I pray to God, I didn't.

(Grady) 'Father..'

(Spenser) 'Sergeant Grady.'

I'm sorry, I'm gonna have to arrest you for m*rder.

I understand.

Before you say anything, father

I have to read you your rights.

You have the right to remain silent.

The, um, night clerk at the hotel

saw Father Mike take the girl upstairs.

Little while later, he saw him running away.

I don't believe it.

You don't wanna believe it, Spenser. There's a difference.

(Grady) 'Father, do you understand these rights'

'as I've explained them to you?'

(Spenser) Belson was wrong.

There was more than my wanting Father Mike to be innocent.

I remembered how he had held

that dead boy's head in his hands and cried.

I remembered how much he had cared about other kids.

The ones he'd pulled off the street

and tried to help.

I just couldn't accept the idea

that the same man could k*ll an innocent.

Someone he cared for.

If he had, there wasn't much I could do.

But if he hadn't, I meant to find out.

You another cop?

The kind that pays for information.

That's a switch.

I wanna talk to the night clerk.

One who fingered the girl for k*lling the priest.

That's, uh, Tony. He ain't here right now.

Where is he? When's he coming back?

Said he was going on, vacation.

He's got one of them trailers, you know?

Likes to ride around.

He's a regular Charles Kuralt, you know?

Why do I get the feeling you're lying?

'Cause maybe I am.

'I ain't gonna do nothing to help that priest.'

He's a no-good bum.

That's what you want, isn't it?

He's responsible for my Ronnie being in prison.

Little Ronnie didn't have anything

to do with that himself, did he?

Hey, what do you think, life's a fantasy island down here?

So what if Ronnie did do a little dealing

'how's a kid supposed to make a livin'?'

'That priest wants to make a federal case out of it.'

'He's a bum. He's a no-good bum.'

Looks like you've made another lifelong friend.

Uh, she's a grand woman. Belongs somewhere in Macbeth.

Uh..

(Hawk) 'I hear they arrested your holy man.'

On the word of a night clerk named Tony.

Only, she wasn't about to tell me where he is.

You think your holy man was set up?

I'm hoping.

(Hawk) 'There are lot of folk on the street.

'who'd like to see him disappear.'

(Spenser) 'Anyone in particular?'

The word is, your holy man was gonna make a comeback.

He dried out. He was gonna come back to the shelter.

People started getting nervous. People like pimps, pushers.

The ones he had a habit of putting out of business

and putting into jail.

New paragraph.

There was one person who "hated him highly."

That be your All-American boy.

Irony.

He was one of the first street kids

Father Mike took

'and put him into the shelter.'

He said he would get him last night.

- Later. - Alright.

- What do you want? - Just wanna have a little talk.

- I don't wanna talk to you. - You don't have a choice.

[dramatic music]

Going somewhere?

If you got nothing to hide, what are you running from?

Nothing.

I just wanna talk about Father Mike.

I don't like to talk, okay?

Don't come any closer.

Why, what are you gonna do, jump?

Is that all your life is worth to you?

The priest is where he belongs. I hope he rots in there.

You think he k*lled that girl, huh?

Or do you know he didn't?

You set him up, didn't you?

He's a liar, and a fake.

Why, what did he do to you?

All I want is the truth.

What are you just gonna do, b*at it out of me?

'Cause I've been done by the best.

My old man.

He broke four of my ribs, my left arm

and my jaw when I was four.

You know why? Because I had to go to the bathroom.

- Father Mike ever hit you? - He did worse than that.

He got you off the street. He tried to give you a home.

- You don't understand. - Well, make me understand.

- He lied to me. - How did he lie?

He told me I was worth something.

He said that everybody had some dignity.

How could he say that?

And then drink.

And just..

...fall down.

Sometimes..

...a man can break under too much pressure.

That doesn't mean he lied.

Or changed how much he cared for you.

(Grady) 'You lookin' to help the priest'

you picked the wrong kid.

He hates his guts.

Never been more wrong in your life.

He loves him so much, it hurts.

[instrumental music]

[instrumental music]

(Hawk) 'Paradise.'

'Most open street in the city shuts up tight'

'when one inquires about your holy man.'

(Spenser) Makes me wonder.

Who could keep a street full of voices so quiet?

Who can make the night clerk finger Father Mike

for the k*lling?

There is one distinct possibility

that would explain everything.

Your holy man did the deed.

Yeah, I'm ready to buy that one.

Ha. Some shaft.

[dog growling]

[dog barking]

- Doc! - 'Nero!'

Okay. They're friends.

(Spenser) I had discovered several years ago that Doc

while being a bona fide street character

was also a bit of a fraud.

While he gave every appearance that the wrist watches

and jewelry he sold were hot

he actually bought them at a wholesale house.

He said he was only appealing to man's insatiable appetite

for the forbidden fruit.

More basil.

Hm.

We need some help, Doc.

You're tryin' to help the priest.

That's not a very smart thing to do.

You helped him.

You saw the kid going to the sh**ting gallery

and you called the priest.

Mistake.

Better if I'd never called him.

Look, nobody will help the holy man.

They won't even talk about him

and when they do, they're afraid.

People are always afraid of dying.

"Who" are they afraid of?

Hear you're looking for a night clerk

that made the priest.

You know where he is?

Knew where he was at lunchtime.

Crap game in China Harry's.

Very lucky fella.

Lost all of his money.

You call that lucky?

Too busy telling everybody his good fortune.

I mean, he's a three-time loser with a trial coming up.

He was looking at life until this morning.

What happened this morning?

Cop told him his arrest record was gonna be lost

if he did a little favor.

ID the priest.

This cop got a name?

Doc?

Hey!

Even little guys are afraid of dying.

[dog barking]

Nero!

[operatic music]

[engine revving]

We've talked to the district attorney

the deal's made

we'll work out the details tomorrow.

Alright.

[clattering]

Champ!

Champ!

I know..

I know you hate me. I don't blame you.

'I've done some terrible things. I know I drink too much.'

'Shout.'

Get angry.

I remind you of your father, I'm sorry.

I love you.

God..

...loves you.

'Please don't go on leading the life you're leading'

'because I failed. You're too important for that.'

Champ!

Forgive me.

Forgive me.

[instrumental music]

If a cop framed Father Mike for k*lling the girl

chances are the..

...same cop set him up

for breaking that h**ker's jaw a couple years ago.

You always wanna believe the best about people, don't you?

Hey, your dad says you've always been like that.

My dad?

Did he call?

Couple of hours ago.

He says that you used to take care of Charlie

like he was the little brother you never had.

Hm.

Oh, boy.

[phone ringing]

[phone ringing]

Spenser.

This is Champ.

Uh, we, uh, talked on the roof today.

I know who you are.

I didn't set up Father Mike but I know who did.

Where do you wanna meet?

Back of the Waikiki Club. In one hour.

[receiver clacks]

[instrumental music]

[indistinct chatter]

(Champ) 'It's a trap, man. Get out of here, Spenser.'

'Get out. It's a trap.'

[spray hissing]

[pan clangs]

You're dead.

[grunting]

(male # ) 'Heard you wanted to see the night clerk.'

[g*n f*ring]

[g*n fires]

[groaning]

(Young Spenser) Charlie!

Charlie!

Your mom and dad are looking all over for you.

I'm not going back.

- You gotta sometime. - No, I don't.

She told, big girl.

My dad wants to put her to sleep.

Just doesn't wanna see her suffer anymore.

She's the best dog there ever was.

I know but she's dying, Charlie.

'She's been in a lot of pain lately.'

My dad says sometimes, when you love someone enough

you just have to let go.

[instrumental music]

(male # ) 'Somebody call an ambulance.'

[indistinct chatter]

[instrumental music]

Spenser, the doctor says you have a concussion

you should stay in at least overnight.

I know. He told me. Three times. It's his business.

You know, for the doctor to tell people like me

things like that.

On the other hand, it's my business

when people set me up to be k*lled

to let 'em know real quick it's a bad idea.

I thought Hawk was taking care of that.

I can take care of myself.

Maybe. But you sure dress funny.

[sighs]

Can it wait?

It can't.

[chuckles]

[clears throat]

Hey, doc says you got a concussion, Spenser

you should stay in at least overnight.

How's your diet coming?

In case you didn't notice, Spenser

that sh**t had a shotgun.

If the kid didn't plow into him when he did

you'd be in two pieces.

What's the word on the kid?

We're out there looking for him now.

The point is, Spenser

if somebody's out to get you

you're not fit to be out.

Who's gonna protect me, the police?

If I had to lay odds, I'd say it was one of your boys in blue

who had the kid set me up in the first place.

Hey, that's a pretty strong statement.

So is the one by the now-dead night clerk.

Same as Father Mike who k*lled the girl.

Word on the street, Frank, is that the, uh, night clerk

made a deal, with a cop.

You finger Father Mike for the k*lling

and we'll lose your arrest records.

(Frank) That doesn't wash, Spenser.

You keep looking for ways for Father Mike

to be innocent but he's not.

The priest and his lawyers cut a deal with the DA.

He's gotta cop a plea to involuntary manslaughter.

By the end of the week, it's all gonna be swept under the carpet.

Then I still don't believe it.

You still don't wanna believe it.

I'm gonna prove I'm right.

Hey. Come on, you can't go out alone.

Then don't let him, Frank.

[instrumental music]

[dramatic music]

Hey, Champ.

Listen, man, I don't want to thank you for coming out on me.

[indistinct chatter]

[g*n f*ring]

[tires squealing]

(Father Mike) 'What else did you expect me to do?'

I couldn't put the church through anymore.

The courts.

The scandal.

Besides, they had evidence against me, uh

the sworn statement of a night clerk.

Night clerk's dead.

I think he's dead because I was looking for him.

I don't understand.

It's very simple, I think you were framed

for k*lling the girl.

'That's what your friend, Champ'

'wanted to talk to me about.'

You saw Champ?

Tonight at the restaurant

this afternoon, on the rooftop.

We had a very nice conversation.

About you.

In case you didn't know, he needs you very much.

- Not me. I drink, I get angry. - Will you stop it already?

Stop all the lying. You're needed on the street.

Don't you understand?

I can't. I'm an alcoholic.

Yeah, maybe you are.

'Maybe you oughta do something about it.'

I also think you're hiding behind all this.

'You're using it as a shield'

'so you don't have to look at your real problem.'

You're afraid you're losing your faith.

'But as long as your brain is numb and you allow people'

'to accuse you of crimes you haven't committed'

'you don't have to face those ugly questions.'

How could God let happen what happens

to those kids on the street?

How could he let it happen and still be a good God?

What is it you want from me?

Like I said, I think you're being framed for the k*lling.

I also think you were probably framed

'for b*ating up the hooker a couple of years ago.'

'I wanna know who told you that.'

I want the name of the cop

who said he'd hush it up if you got out of the Zone.

Grady.

Grady?

He's the one that took the statement

from the night clerk.

I'm sorry to interrupt you

but there's a phone call for Mr. Spenser.

'Says it's very important.'

Thank you.

Yeah?

Big, found that kid that set you up.

Champ?

Things are getting curiouser

and curiouser.

He was meeting the cop.

The one they call Ramos.

'Before I could get in, someone else did.'

Kid got away, man caught four b*ll*ts.

- Dead? - 'Not yet.'

He's a tough hombre and he says he's undercover

internal affairs, investigating another cop.

The one who sh*t him.

Grady.

You are perception in motion, baby.

You better bring your holy man with you.

Man said he want to see a priest.

Bye.

(woman on PA) 'Please report to the pharmacy.'

'Doctor, to the pharmacy please.'

Ramos gonna make it?

Flying colors.

[sighs] You nail Grady?

Yeah, nailed him.

Grady was giving protection to the pushers and the pimps.

You want half a candy bar?

It makes me sick, Spenser.

Dirty cops just turns my stomach.

Why'd he go after Father Mike?

Too many of the bad guys were tired

of the priest wrecking their business.

Puttin' em in jail. And you were right.

'First time was a couple of years ago.'

Grady looked for a night when Father Mike

was drinking heavily.

And he got a bartender to slip him a Mickey.

'He wouldn't remember anything then him and the fat man'

broke a h**ker's jaw and forced her to sign

a complaint against the priest.

Why'd he k*ll the girl the other night?

Well, I guess she was becoming as..

much a problem as the priest was.

There were rumors of Father Mike makin' a comeback

like, daddy was under pressure to deliver.

Figured he'd take them both out of woods.

Hmm.

You look like hell.

Well, I've been eating half candy bars, Spenser

I'm starving to death.

What's your excuse?

[laughing]

What do you say we go out for steak and eggs

and some very greasy whole-fried potatoes, on me?

You are a true American hero.

(Spenser) It's said if you're going to judge a man

you can't do so just by his friends

but also by his enemies.

Father Mike had made some dandies.

Coffee, regular.

(Spenser) And yet it's also said that every man

is his own greatest enemy.

I was hoping Father Mike had overcome that too.

[instrumental music]

I'm back.

I'm going to try again.

'I can't do it alone. I know that now.'

If you can't see your way clear to help me..

...at least try to forgive me.

'Pray for me.'

Father!

Good boy.

[indistinct chatter]

(Spenser) Sometimes, it's good for all of us

to get back to our beginnings.

Our loved ones.

I thought this was a good time for me.

[instrumental music]

I also wanted to say goodbye to a friend.

[theme music]
