Jennifer O'Keefe had been six years old

when she disappeared years ago.

There are missing children who are never found.

Jennifer O'Keefe is dead. She's been dead for years.

I have a client, she doesn't know who she really is.

She could be your granddaughter.

(Hawk) 'Spenser!'

There was some ugly people, child molesters.

A long time ago, this cost you your badge.

I'm not gonna drop this thing.

I oughta blow you away.

[g*nsh*t]

Spenser!

(Hawk) 'Hold on, man.'

[theme music]

[music continues]

[music continues]

[instrumental music]

(boy # ) 'Spenser!'

'Spenser!'

[young Spenser sighs]

What are you doing? It's two o'clock in the morning.

I'm running away from home.

I came to ask if I could borrow your Zippo.

Why?

Well, I got some matches but they could get wet.

And I might have to build a fire if I camp out.

Why are you running away from home?

You saw the report card.

My dad's going to k*ll me.

Can I have the Zippo?

[sighs]

It's.. Here.

Works every time.

[snores]

[gasps]

[dog barking]

I still think it's strange.

Well, not really.

Last night, I told you about Valentine having strange dreams

about her childhood.

You also told me she was deeply disturbed.

Do you think I am deeply disturbed, doctor?

[laughs]

Disturbing, not disturbed.

There's a big difference, fella.

Last night, you dreamt of your childhood.

a troubling time for you and your friend.

The difference is that your dreams

came out of a reality

which you know existed.

I don't know that about Valentine's.

I mean, hers could be reality

and it could be complete fantasy.

And if I'm gonna help her, I have to find out which.

[indistinct chatter]

That's her.

So what do you want me to do?

Help me find out who she really is.

I thought you said her name was Valentine.

Valentine Turner.

But she's not sure where she got the name

and the last name has changed several times.

She grew up with aunts and uncles

and when she'd ask about her parents

she'd be told that they were dead.

Or that they'd given her away

that they'd abandoned her.

That they didn't want her anymore.

A different story every time.

Yes.

'In her dreams, there's a woman named mommy and a daddy'

and sometimes a grandma.

They were all kind and loving to her.

But only in her dreams.

Yes.

What happened to her parents in her dreams?

(Susan) 'She's not sure.'

She thinks she did something awful

and that she was put in a dark place

for a long time.

She never sees them again.

What do you think that means?

I can't be sure.

I've only had three sessions with her

but I think there's a chance that she was abducted

as a small child.

I mean, there are missing children

who are never found, right?

There are always missing children.

As I said before

I don't know how much of her dreams are real

and how much are fantasy

but I do know that there is one thing

that is real.

As a small child growing up

she was sexually abused.

'I mean, long term, chronic'

'you could almost call it institutional.'

Someone or some group of adults

made her child's life a nightmare.

(Spenser) So, where'd you grow up?

[laughs]

Lots of places.

You wanna tell us about some of those places?

Mm.

Lancaster.

Pennsylvania.

How old were you then?

I don't know, twelve or thirteen maybe.

I was in junior high.

I was with Fred then.

Was Fred your uncle?

Yes.

Fred have a wife?

Barbara.

She hated me.

What's the first time you remember with Fred and Barbara?

(Valentine) 'Uh, uh..'

'One or two years before that'

I don't know, we traveled around a lot.

He was selling things then.

What sort of things?

Films, you know, sex stuff.

Pictures of me too.

What's the earliest time you can remember?

'Who was taking care of you then?'

I don't wanna do this anymore.

- I wanna go. - Valentine--

You're supposed to be helping me.

We are trying to help you.

I know it's painful.

'Please stay.'

Just try.

Why do you think you lived in Boston?

Because of my dreams.

In your dreams..

...did you live in a house?

Or in an apartment?

It's funny, uh..

Sometimes..

...it's this big beautiful house

and, uh..

the lawn just keeps going and going.

I can, I can see the ocean.

'And, uh, sometimes..'

'...it's a boat.'

'Like a house boat.'

Punchinello.

My dog's name was Punchinello.

Valentine said she remembered a dog

but she couldn't remember it's name.

Was this little, uh, scruffy dog

like in, "The Wizard of Oz."

[sniffles]

That help any?

[phone ringing]

(Frank) 'Homicide, hold please.'

- Frank, I need some help. - You need help?

Got a third of the precinct down with the flu

we're working double shifts three days runnin'

I'm not feeling good myself

Look at my eyes.

Romantic as ever.

I'm serious here, Spenser, look at my tongue.

Dark coating. Probably chocolate.

(Spenser) 'I need the Jennifer O'Keefe file.'

- Hey, Halpic. - Okay, hang on.

Does it look like I have three ears?

Don't answer that.

Jennifer O'Keefe.

Yeah, look, Susan's been working in this clinic once a week

and a couple of weeks ago, this girl comes in

doesn't know who she really is.

but remembers things in dreams, you know?

Spenser, Jennifer O'Keefe is dead.

Yeah, well..

She describes the O'Keefe Mansion.

Right down to the lawn rolling down to the sea.

She knows about the boat down on the cape, uh

the name of the dog, I know it's nothing

that wasn't covered in the newspapers

but I told Susan I'd check it out.

- It's got you again. - No, it doesn't have me again.

Yeah, it's got you again, it's got you again.

I just want the file, alright?

Read my lips, will ya?

Jennifer O'Keefe is dead.

She's been dead for years.

The Hanovers m*rder*d her

They m*rder*d her and those other kids.

- During that five-year period - They never found a body.

They never found half the body, Spenser.

You get careless when you bury that many kids in the woods.

I need the files, just get a uniformed cop

to go down to the hall of records

and dig all that stuff out.

Including the cops' logbooks.

And your logbook too, I suppose.

Yeah, my logbook too.

Spense..

'A long time ago, this cost you your badge'

'let it be.'

I'm not gonna let it be.

I can't let it be.

Now either give me the file

or arrest me later for breaking and entering.

(Spenser) I could only wait for Frank to bring me the file

from downtown.

In the meanwhile, after making some phone calls

I decided to pull up what I'd saved myself.

Jennifer O'Keefe had been six years old

when she disappeared.

It was a day in late January years ago.

Because she was the only child

of one of the richest men on the Eastern Seaboard

it caught the media's attention.

Then four years later, Fred and Elsie Hanover

a charming, average

middle class couple were arrested.

When their story had finally tumbled out

they had admitted to the abduction and m*rder

of a total of children.

Jennifer O'Keefe being one of them.

I never believed it.

I found Hawk and asked him to make some inquiries.

Then I went to keep an appointment

at what I thought could be the house

in Valentine's dreams.

Mrs. O'Keefe?

- You are Spenser? - Yes, ma'am.

Yes. I remember now.

You were younger of course and thinner then.

[chuckles]

I, uh, appreciate you seeing me.

You were always coming back, asking more questions.

Even after..

I never believed the Hanovers had k*lled your granddaughter.

I'm thinking of selling the place.

Doctor Forsythe has suggested that we renovate it first.

Because no one's lived in it since.

Mrs. O'Keefe, if you remember, uh..

...the Hanovers denied k*lling your granddaughter.

They were in jail almost a month before they..

'...before they added her to their list.'

What more do you want?

Can't you see?

They're all gone.

My son

'my daughter-in-law.'

They're dead too.

They never recovered.

I have a client.

Young woman.

Eighteen.

Nineteen.

'She doesn't know who she really is."

It's possible she could be your granddaughter.

Tsk.

I'm sorry. I thought you should know.

I'm checking out the girl's story.

Her background.

'But ultimately, I'll need a test.'

Something that wasn't in the media.

Something that only you

and a six-year-old Jennifer might know.

I'm disappointed in you, Spenser.

I always thought of you as a bright, earnest young man.

we knew someone would show up.

'I'm just sorry it was you.'

I don't understand.

About a month ago, Mrs. O'Keefe's attorney

received a phone call from a man

who wouldn't identify himself.

He wanted to know if the million dollar reward

for the return of Jennifer was still in effect.

You're a fraud, Spenser.

Worse than that.

Bad fraud.

[instrumental music]

(Forsythe) You can let yourself out, Mr. Spenser.

[music continues]

[music continues]

As your nanny, I should know. It was here.

She always kept Timmy right here, officer.

[sighs] I'm sorry, I keep forgetting your name.

(Spenser) 'Spenser'

'You're sure Jennifer didn't take Timmy?'

Yes. That's exactly it.

They didn't like her to bring it to her little school

Timmy was, uh, old and dirty.

One of his arms was missing

One of his eyes didn't work.

Timmy was Jennifer's favorite teddy.

She wouldn't go to sleep without him.

Nobody will believe me when I tell them that

Timmy was here after Jennifer left

and the day after.

He was gone.

They tell me that I'm imagining things.

I've even heard them whisper

that I'm supposed to be having a nervous breakdown.

[instrumental music]

[dramatic music]

(Spenser) I didn't like the notion that I might be

being played for a fool.

As a matter of fact

Susan wasn't too hot

on the idea either.

Valentine's not scheduled

to work again until tomorrow morning.

Do you have an address on her?

Yes. The boss also said she doesn't live alone.

Now it makes sense.

- Who is he? - Jack LeClerc.

He was a crime reporter.

Till they found out he was a go-between

for some cops and dirty money.

He didn't do anything illegal

but he's always looking for an angle.

He covered the Jennifer O'Keefe disappearance.

Then he'd know everything about the O'Keefe Estate.

Sure, the boat down at the cape.

- The dog named Punchinello. - Oh.

We do our homework right

and you're gonna be a very rich girl.

[knocking on door]

(Susan) 'Valentine? It's Dr. Silverman.'

What do you want?

(Susan) 'I just need to talk to you for a few minutes.'

'It's important.'

Okay, let her in. But if she wants to talk for a long time

tell her you'll meet her at the clinic. Okay?

[sniffles]

How'd you find me?

Uh, listen, if you guys wanna talk

uh, I'll just meet you back..

We can go to the clinic, we can go now or..

'I'm sorry but I..'

'You caught me at a very bad time right now'

'so if you wanna..'

'You can't just walk into somebody's house and..'

Spenser.

LeClerc.

[laughing]

Wha..

Uh..

Same old Spenser.

Same old LeClerc.

Tryin' to pull off some shady deal.

Not shady. I resent that.

'Legitimate.'

Do you know what he was tryin' to get you to do?

I was trying to help her was what I was trying to do.

(Valentine) He was helping me.

Helping you assume the identity of some wealthy missing heiress.

(LeClerc) 'Whoa, wait a minute, I resent that.'

'I think she really is Jennifer O'Keefe. Hey.'

Before you laugh or walk out the door, smart guy

maybe you should listen.

'I mean, wouldn't it be ironic'

if after all these years of you

'believing that she was not dead'

'and you quitting the force'

'because they wouldn't let you'

'go on with the investigation.'

If you walked out now

and maybe she's standing right here.

'Think about it.'

Valentine. Who do you think you are?

I don't know.

'But almost everything I told you is true.'

'Except I didn't remember about the dog being named Punchinello'

'and he told me about the boat.'

And in my dreams, I have a mommy and daddy who love me.

And they don't do things to me.

They just hold me and love me.

- Excuse me. - Spenser..

[Valentine sobbing]

You have a coat?

Get it. We're going for a walk.

Tell me a story.

She tells me she has dreams

about another life, things like this..

Now why did you think that she was ultimately

Jennifer O'Keefe though?

- Her dreams. - Her dreams?

Yes. Her dreams.

A big house with a lawn that rolls into the sea.

A mother, and a father, and a grandmother

that she doesn't know what happened to.

Whoa! I start thinking "What if?"

- Sure. What if. - What if? No.

She's the right age and she kept telling me

that she felt like she belonged in Boston.

I mean, it could make one hell of a story.

It'd also make a great payday, right?

One million dollars.

You're the one who called the O'Keefe's attorneys, right?

Absolutely, yes.

Yes. A man has got to know

that there will be rewards if he puts out the effort.

The only effort you made is to get somebody else

to do the leg work for ya.

Who's gonna believe me I go walking in there

and I say I got Jennifer O'Keefe.

You got a point.

Who is gonna help me prove that?

The cops?

The O'Keefes? No, not with the reputation I got.

Well, why didn't you come to me? We go way back.

Are you really gonna believe me more than anybody else?

Pay any more attention? No.

Susan. Susan was the best way to get you into the action.

And the only thing I'm sorry about

is that you came in so early.

What are you gonna do? You gonna drop the investigation?

I'm gonna have to ask my client.

Uh, excuse me.

- Yes? - Where are you taking her?

She can stay with me tonight.

'Tomorrow, we'll find her a place of her own.'

Come on, honey.

You're a piece of work.

Hey, if she really turns out to be Jennifer

'I get a big piece of that million.'

A true humanitarian.

[instrumental music]

(Spenser) I dropped off Susan and Valentine

and headed home.

LeClerc had left me feeling used and dirty.

Then I realized that's how Valentine had felt

most of her life.

It was a long sh*t she was really Jennifer O'Keefe

but I figured she deserved someone trying to find out.

(male # ) 'Come on.'

Move it up.

Back.

'More.'

'Back.'

[intense music]

[tires screeching]

Spenser!

[g*nsh*t]

[sh*ts f*ring]

[grunts]

[tires screeching]

[g*nsh*t]

Ah.

- He's dying. - No.

Look like I gotta call an ambulance.

I don't suppose you have any idea who did this, huh?

- Somebody doesn't like me. - A whole bunch.

In fact, there's a digit on your head. thou.

Somebody up top you. I just came here to spread the news.

Somebody b*at me to it.

g*dd*mn.

Unh-huh. Unh-huh-huh.

[indistinct chatter]

(male # ) 'Here we go.'

Looks like you sh*t some high-priced talent, Spenser.

Maybe luck will get 'em back making license plates

for the Commonwealth. Achoo.

You don't sound good, Frank.

You oughta be home in bed.

My theory is I'd feel just as rotten home in bed.

I might as well get paid for feelin' rotten.

You got any idea why they sh*t at you?

The only thing I'm working on is this Jennifer O'Keefe thing.

That reminds me. Come here.

[coughs]

You know, I had my head handed to me

for breakfast this morning for diggin' these records out.

Everybody knows you got a girl claims to be Jennifer O'Keefe.

You're makin' a lot of people very nervous.

- Anybody in particular? - Well, brass mostly.

People'll look ridiculous if you actually had..

Wait a minute. Wait..

You're not saying that these guys sh**ting at you

had something to do with the O'Keefe case.

I don't know. But look at it this way.

If Jennifer O'Keefe didn't die after all those years

then it only makes sense that somebody took her, right?

I mean, it's the only reasonable explanation.

Alright, alright, I'll bite.

If she didn't die years ago, somebody took her.

And after all these years, she shows up

or somebody who might be Jennifer O'Keefe shows up.

Anybody involved in her abduction's

gotta be a little nervous.

And if she can identify 'em, she can put 'em

in the Charles Street jail for a long time.

And we both know that that ain't the Riviera.

You're right, Spenser. Then that girl's life is in danger too.

She's at Susan's. Hawk's looking after her.

I'll get a uniform on her as soon as I can.

Now, will you take these files outta here?

I already had a piece taken out of my hide today.

[instrumental music]

All's quiet on the northern shore.

Susan and the lost child are safe and sound.

You been hiding under some rocks.

Indeed I did and I found some ugly people.

The kind that deserves surgery with a chainsaw.

You wanna elucidate?

Rumor. There are photographs of little Jennifer.

Very explicit. Very expensive.

I'm ready to go halvsies on that chainsaw.

So who has these pictures?

Very sophisticated. Very upscale.

Very clean. Doctors, lawyers. All walks of life.

They are called pedophiles. Not child molesters.

Fancy name. Same thing.

So they exchange photos and magazines

and sometimes even children.

What about somebody abducting her?

They claim they don't steal children.

Got enough problems staying away from the man

without worrying about kidnapping.

Well, where did they get these children they pass around?

Spenser, you know

go downtown any city

streets are filled with people nobody wants.

Too many of them are children.

Hooray, for the red, white, and blue.

Time to go.

Where'd these pictures of Jennifer come from?

Don't know. Still askin'.

'Bout to file that chainsaw though.

[instrumental music]

(Spenser) If Hawk was right about there being pictures

of young Jennifer

that meant the backgrounds matched.

Were they the same person?

I still didn't know.

But another question was nagging at me.

When had Jennifer O'Keefe's sexual abuse begun?

Before or after she disappeared?

Bluebird School.

Jennifer O'Keefe was last seen alive

on a Wednesday morning in January

when she was dropped off at her school.

The girl's nanny was fighting off the flu

and didn't feel well enough to walk the girl inside.

She never actually saw a teacher in the playground.

The people who ran the school said that Jennifer

had never arrived in class.

Later, it was speculated that

she wandered out of the schoolyard.

Like everyone else in the case

the people that'd run the school

had been thoroughly investigated.

Or so we thought they had.

Maybe we should've asked them

if one of their hobbies was photography.

[line beeping]

(woman on phone) 'Operator , who wants city?'

Yes, in Newton please.

The number for the Bluebird School.

'That number is - .'

Nice to know they're still in business.

[phone ringing]

- Spenser. - Spenser!

LeClerc. I need help.

'They're tryin' to k*ll me!'

LeClerc, slow down. Who's trying to k*ll you?

[g*nshots]

LeClerc!

(Spenser on phone) 'LeClerc! LeClerc!'

[instrumental music]

- Watch that. - Yeah, alright.

[coughs]

Yeesh.

I've had , units of Vitamin C today.

Everywhere I go, I think I smell oranges.

I always figured LeClerc would end up like that

with a face full of somebody else's buckshot.

Yeah, it's nice not to be disappointed.

Too bad he had to drag you into his scam.

Well, in a way, his motives might be suspect

but that greedy little guy might've been right.

That girl could be Jennifer O'Keefe.

Heh. Sure.

That's why LeClerc's running this little home study course

so she'd have all the right answers.

(Spenser) 'Somebody tried to knock me off this afternoon'

the only thing we had in common was Jennifer O"Keefe.

The only thing you had in common? Come on, Spenser.

The only thing you guys have in common is that

over the years, you both made a heck of a lot of enemies.

Now granted, his list is a little longer

and a lot sleazier than yours.

But the guys that don't like you can be just as violent.

You're not listening to a word I'm saying.

I am listening, Spenser.

And I happen to think child p*rn

is the worst thing in the world.

'But if you think I'm gonna go downtown'

and tell 'em I wanna reopen the O'Keefe case

and start by investigating

one of the most exclusive schools in the--

That little girl attended that school

from the time she was three.

If you're gonna do something like that to a kid

what better place than a school?

The Hanovers confessed to k*lling her.

A month after they were in jail.

This doesn't fit.

It never did fit.

'People have bent pieces to make it fit.'

They cut corners.

The other children were taken in the afternoon

Jennifer was taken in the morning.

Hanover worked the night shift. He slept in the mornings.

I need some help.

I'm not gonna drop this thing.

Alright.

Alright, I'll see what I can do.

Quietly.

Spenser, if you want the big g*ns involved

you're gonna have to give me more than this.

You're gonna have to give me proof that that girl is alive

and not buried somewhere in the Maine woods

like the Hanovers said she was.

[coughs]

[instrumental music]

[lighter clicks]

Works every time.

Yeah. Got some lighter fluid in the kitchen.

I'll bring that in case it runs out on us.

What do you mean "us?"

I'm the one running away from home.

I'm coming with you.

Why?

Your dad's not gonna k*ll you.

You got a great dad.

'You don't wanna run away from home.'

I've wanted to run away from home for a long time.

Just looking for the chance.

You're only doing this because you think

I can't make it on my own.

You're crazy.

You're always protecting me.

Even in school when they ganged up on me.

You didn't let them.

You don't have to come with me.

You're my best friend.

I don't want you to be alone.

Gotta make sure I got your old trusty Zippo.

[instrumental music]

(Spenser) The Massachusetts Monsters

as the media had dubbed Fred and Elsie Hanover

had been a quiet, friendly couple, neighbors said.

No one had known that their hobby was kidnapping

torturing, and murdering children.

Fred had since shuffled off his mortal coil.

Actually, he had been given a pretty good shove.

Thirty-seven s*ab wounds while taking a shower

at men's correctional institute.

Elsie, on the other hand, had found God.

At least, that's what the color spread

on one of the Sunday supplements

had reported a few months back.

I was hoping she hadn't lost him yet.

Jesus loves you.

You have that on good authority?

The best. My Lord tells me so.

It's right here in his book.

And now, you've come to see me.

You see, I need to communicate with the outside world

I need to contact the parents

of the dear children Fred and I hurt.

But the authorities don't understand.

They don't wanna give you their names and address.

I, I read that in a magazine.

Praise God, you understand.

How many parents would you like to contact?

All of them.

Including the parents of Jennifer O'Keefe?

[inhales] Uh..

I don't know.

Elsie.

Somewhere in that book of yours

'it says I am the way'

'and the truth.'

I'd like the truth, Elsie about Jennifer O'Keefe.

A very confused young woman has come to me.

She doesn't know who she is.

It's possible she might be Jennifer O'Keefe.

We said we k*lled her.

Elsie.

I can help her

if I know the truth.

Elsie, if you wanna save yourself..

sometimes you have to try to save someone else first.

No.

No what?

We didn't k*ll her.

We weren't even in the state when she disappeared.

We were in Baltimore, Fred's dad was dying

counting the funeral, we were there more than a week.

Why?

Wy did you admit to k*lling Jennifer O'Keefe?

One of the children we k*lled

w-was in New Hampshire.

They had the death penalty there.

After some weeks in jail our lawyer come to us

he said he could make a deal

a promise that we wouldn't be extradited to New Hampshire

if we include the O'Keefe girl..

...in what we did.

You're trying to tell me

that my granddaughter is still alive?

I'm saying the Hanovers didn't k*ll her.

Elsie Hanover will be making a formal statement

to that effect.

Why?

How long is this thing gonna go on?

The other day I told you about a young woman.

She could be your granddaughter.

What do you want from me?

I wanna bring her here.

Tomorrow morning.

With the doctor who's been working with her.

And you think we'd be able to tell

whether she's Jennifer?

I'm very sorry to put you through this ordeal.

Tomorrow morning then.

[instrumental music]

(Belson) 'The Hanovers attorney's name was McCracken.'

Who?

Frank McCracken.

Yeah, it seems that shortly after he defended the Hanovers

he came into a lot of money and moved to Hawaii.

You know where he is now?

Uh, yeah, we got a call out to the guy.

He's on a hunt or somethin'. Wild pig, I don't know.

He's not available till tomorrow.

You got great steam here, Spenser.

Yeah, that's one of the features that attracted me to this place.

[chuckles] Look at this.

You know, I haven't seen one of these since I don't know when.

I had one just like it, except..

...mine had a little navy emblem on it.

That was my dad's.

Okay, Spenser, we're gearing up a full scale

investigation into the O'Keefe case.

That business about the Hanovers being in Baltimore

when the girl went missing, it checked out.

There's a lot of red faces down town.

Yeah, you said McCracken came into some cash after the trial

you know where he got it?

That is one of the many questions

we wanna ask this guy.

It seems that right after the Hanovers

added the O'Keefe girl to their list

McCracken goes up to New Hampshire to review a file.

Two days later there's a fire in New Hampshire

and evidence needed to convict the Hanovers

gets destroyed.

Give us a chance up with you, will you, Spenser?

We're only about eight years behind you on this one.

Ante's been raised on you and the lost child.

You are both now high prized kills.

Someone's gettin' nervous.

Somebody who's afraid that Jennifer O'Keefe

can identify him.

Well, I left trail of rattled heads

and dented faces

no closer to the photos, but may know

who's the source of her troubles.

- School? - Not what I hear.

Drums say she used to be delivered to parties

by a lady dressed in grey.

Grey?

Grey.

It was here.

She always kept little Timmy right here, officer..

I'm sorry, I keep forgetting your name.

(Spenser) I phone Rose O'Keefe

and found out the woman who had been Jennifer's nanny

now ran a flower shop in Quincy.

How charming.

Looks like she has company.

Forsythe.

Who is he?

(Spenser) 'Dr. Robert E. Forsythe.'

He has one of the more prominent medical practices in the city.

Happens to be the O'Keefe's family doctor.

You should've k*lled her when I told you.

I couldn't. I took care of her.

You took care of her, you made her a star

by the time she was five.

Maybe the police can help you pack the rest of that.

Wait a minute, Spenser, put that away.

There's no need for that.

Now look, I can make you a wealthy man.

You're a piece of garbage!

And I oughta blow you away.

Victor!

[g*n fires]

[g*n fires]

Down! Get on the floor!

[groaning]

Damn, man!

Spenser!

Hold on, man.

Hold on.

Works every time.

g*n sh*t wound to the chest.

- Got a pulse with him? - Yeah, weak and thready.

[indistinct chatter]

- Get him over. - His head.

Okay.

Wait.

[indistinct chatter]

(male # ) 'Get any after bath routine going in there.'

- Second line in. - Pulse still there?

- 'No, I'm losing him.' - Steading.

- 'There's no pulse.' - Okay, he's in defib.

Gonna have to shock him.

Set to . Everybody clear please.

Clear.

Hit it.

(male # ) 'We're still in defib. Chargin' up again.'

Everybody clear off again, please.

I'm coming with you.

Not this time.

You're always protecting me.

But this time it's my turn.

[machine beeping]

(male # ) 'Alright we got a sinus bradycardia.'

Okay, he's startin' to come up.

How is he?

He's gonna be fine. He's out of danger.

But I gotta tell you the dumb luck.

The doctor said one of the b*ll*ts would've gone

right through his heart.

But it hit this in his shirt.

[sighs]

[instrumental music]

(Spenser) Over a week had passed.

And the doctor's still weren't happy about my leaving.

But there was a place I had to be.

I had to know if Jennifer O'Keefe

was finally coming home.

I used to walk along this wall.

Mom will get really scared.

And over there was..

What was over there?

I thought it was a playhouse.

There was a playhouse.

Your father had it..

...had it built for Jennifer when she was three years-old.

(Hawk) 'Once upon a time there was a doctor'

'that liked to party with children.'

One bright morning a little girl named O'Keefe

showed up, saw him.

Doctor was afraid she would talk.

Told the nanny to k*ll her.

The nanny said she didn't have the heart to do it

so she sold her to a couple in Hartford.

Selling young souls into bondage.

Nothing new there.

I think I used to try and slid down this bannister.

This was my room.

I had...all my stuffed animals right here.

And my record player was over there.

I don't know.

I don't know how much he told me and how much I really remember.

[sobbing]

Maybe it doesn't matter

if we never find out who you really are.

'We both had terrible separations'

'from ones we loved.'

Maybe we should just..

..be glad

to have found each other.

And can need each other.

[sobbing]

Has she returned?

I don't know.

She remembers a lot, but nothing that wasn't in the material

LeClerc had.

(Spenser) 'Jennifer.'

Where's Timmy?

Show us where you used to hide Timmy.

Do you remember Timmy?

I always used to hide him when I went away

'cause I didn't want nanny to throw him away.

'And then I would never see him again.'

[instrumental music]

[sobbing]

Oh, Jennifer.

[theme music]

[music continues]
