There.

That looks just right.

Now I just need my birthday tiara.

Oh! Hi max!

You surprised me!

Do you know why I've got

My special party dress on?

It's my birthday!

Do you know what happens on your birthday?

You have cake,

And you get presents,

And if you're lucky,

Your friends come for a birthday party.

And sometimes

If you're really lucky,

Your friends have a surprise

Birthday party for you.

Surprise!

That's right, max.

A surprise birthday party

Is just like a regular birthday party,

Except your friends don't tell you about it,

And when you least expect it,

They all come out and yell "surprise!"

Surprises are one of the best things

About birthdays.

I just know my friends

Will have a surprise birthday party for me,

We don't eat the cake yet!

There are lots and lots of fun things to do

Before we get to the cake!

First of all,

We have to play some party games!

Louise: I love party games!

Valerie: me too!

Hmm... I know!

Let's play musical chairs!

Girls: (excited) oh, I love that! Great idea, ruby! Yeah!

Do you know how to play musical chairs, max?

Louise: it's really fun!

You put out a chair for everyone in the game -

Except one!

Ruby: then you put on some music

And everyone walks around in a circle,

Until the music stops!

Valerie: then everyone tries to sit on a chair,

And the one who doesn't get a chair is out.

Get it, max?

Louise: okay! Let's play!

And one and two...

Louise: round we go!

Ruby: (squeals of excitement)

Maybe you'll win the next game.

Cake!

Ruby: not so fast, max.

The game isn't over yet.

We keep playing

Until there's only one chair left.

Ruby and martha: huh?

Louise: what happened?

To win musical chairs!

But it's not time for cake yet.

We have more games to play.

You always play more than one game

At a birthday party!

That's right, max.

What do you want to play next, ruby?

Let's play stick the tail on the bunny!

Louise: we put a blindfold on somebunny.

You want to be first, ruby?

Valerie: you're the birthday bunny!

With sticky stuff on it.

Martha: and then we spin her around.

Ruby: whoa.

Now she has to try to stick the tail

On the right spot on the bunny.

Good luck, ruby! (Plays piano)

Louise: okay! Go ruby!

Ruby: (giggles)

Girls: (cheer excitedly)

Am I getting warmer

Or colder?

Okay,

I'm going to stick it right...

Louise: we have more games to play!

Valerie: you always play more than two games

At a birthday party!

Martha: that's right, max.

What should we play next?

Let's play...

Red light green light!

Ruby: I love that game!

Do you know how to play that game, max?

It's loads of fun!

We all line up back here,

And ruby stands at the front.

Valerie: when she has her back turned

And says "green light",

We can move toward her.

But when she says "red light"

We have to stop.

If I see you move -

Even a tiny bit -

You have to go back to the start.

And the one who touches ruby

Without getting caught,

Get it, max?

And I see you moving too, valerie.

But I just couldn't.

Louise, you and max are okay.

Okay, here we go again.

Green light!

Red light!

Caught you, louise!

Now you have to go back.

What are you doing way back there?

You'll never win if you don't even try

To get closer to me.

Louise wins!

And you know what it's time for now, max?

For her birthday.

You choose something special

And give it to them

Your friends must like you a lot, ruby!

Which present are you going to open first?

I can't decide.

Oh, they all look so pretty.

I think I'll open this present first!

Because it's the biggest?

Because of the beautiful ballerina wrapping paper!

It's from grandma!

Open it, ruby!

Oh, the ballerinas look so graceful.

I can't wait to see what's inside!

Okay,

But I have to be careful

Not to tear this pretty ballerina paper;

I want to save it.

Makes a present even more special,

Doesn't it, ruby?

It's not a real present

Unless it's nicely wrapped.

There.

(Giggles) good work, ruby.

Ooh! My very own personal ballerina bar!

Thank you, grandma!

You're welcome, ruby! (Chuckles)

Now I can practice my ballet moves

Any time I want!

Oh ruby! You're so lucky!

Can I try?

Sure, louise!

Present!

(Stumbles and thuds)

A ballerina barre is just what I always wanted.

And you can keep the beautiful wrapping paper

To use later.

Nothing says you're special

Like ballerina wrapping paper.

Which present are you going to open next, ruby?

What about this one?

Ruby: I love that paper!

(Gasps) max!

That's special birthday paper.

I want to save it,

Okay?

Thanks max.

Look, louise.

This present is covered in birthday kisses!

I thought you were going to open this one?

It looks really special.

I think I'll save it for later.

Okay! Then open that one!

Ruby: I can re-use this paper on valentine's day!

Louise: great idea, ruby!

Wow!

My very own lipsticks to play with

In our beauty shop!

Cherry. Peach.

Strawberry. Plum.

It's a whole fruit basket!

Let's try the strawberry!

Get your camera!

I'm ready for my close-up.

(Giggling)

(Reel cranks)

Ruby: max!

I told you, max.

This paper is special.

If you want to play fish,

You'll have to catch something else.

(Reel cranks)

Which present are you going to open next, ruby?

The one covered with squiggles?

Mmm...

Not yet.

I want to save that one for later!

Look at all these pretty birdies.

I can put this paper

In my bunny scout birdwatcher's scrapbook.

What is it?

(Bird twitters)

It's a bird caller!

You'll be the only bunny scout

With your very own bird caller!

(Bird caller twitters)

Present!

(Bird caller twitters)

Both: (laugh)

(Truck whirs)

Max!

This paper is special

And I'm saving it for special things,

Okay?

Present!

I think I'll open this one next, louise.

I love the funny squiggles!

That's from me!

That's why I like the paper so much!

You always know what I like, louise!

What is it?

I'm not telling.

You have to unwrap it to see.

From now on whenever I see squiggles,

I'll think of you, louise.

(Gasps)

Ohhh! Pretty!

It's a special keepsake box

To keep your most treasured treasures in!

Thanks, louise! I love it!

(Gasps) I know!

I'll keep my extra-special

Birthday wrapping paper in it.

Wait!

Where did my wrapping paper go?

Both: max!

Here's max's wagon,

But where's max?

(Gasps)

I think you missed a present, ruby.

Ballerinas.

Lipstick kisses.

Birds.

I recognize this wrapping paper.

(Giggles)

Why are you all wrapped up

In birthday paper, max?

Present!
