Hi.

Welcome to my travel room.

I love to travel,

So I decided to fill this room
with things that reminded me

Of all the places
that I've visited

And the different ways
that I got there.

You name it. If it has to do
with leaving one place

And going to another,

I've probably got it here.

But you know
what I really love?

I love maps...

All kinds of maps.

Each one tells me
something different
about the world,

Like this antique map
I've got here.

It actually shows the world
as though it were flat.

And this globe
is a map of the world

That you can take...

For a spin.

There's a map
for just about anyplace
you're interested in going.

Maps can tell you a lot,
but they can't tell you
the whole story.

If you really want
to experience a new place,
you have to go there,

Like my friend mrs. Tilby

In this book,

Someplace else.

Carol kane: all her life,

Mrs. Tilby had lived
in the white house
by the apple orchard.

All her life,

Mrs. Tilby had tended the trees
and picked and sold apples.

All her life,

Mrs. Tilby wondered
how it would be to live
someplace else.

One morning,
mrs. Tilby came downstairs

And spoke to her son wes.

"All my life,
I've wondered how it would be

"To live someplace else,

"And now is the time
for me to try.

"Tomorrow I am leaving
to visit your brother les
in the big city.

If it suits me, I'll stay."

The next day,
mrs. Tilby put her suitcase

In the back
of the old green truck.

Then mrs. Tilby drove off
down the road.

Mrs. Tilby pulled up in front
of les' apartment house.

It was 40 stories high.

"Welcome to the city, mother,"
said les.

"I know you're
going to love it here."

Mrs. Tilby was happy
in the city.

She went to museums

And theaters

And restaurants,

But after a few weeks,

She wanted to move on.

"I can see why you
love city life, les,"
said mrs. Tilby.

"But it doesn't feel
like home to me,

"So I want to try living
someplace else.

"Tomorrow I'm leaving
to visit your sister tess

"At the seashore.

If it suits me, I'll stay."

Tess' house stood on stilts
at the edge of the ocean.

"Welcome to the seashore,
mother," said tess.

"You'll just love it here."

Mrs. Tilby did like
the ocean.

She spent hours gathering shells
with her grandchildren.

At night,
the sound of the waves

Lulled her to sleep,

But after a few weeks,

She needed to move on.

"I understand why you love
living by the shore, tess,"

Said mrs. Tilby.

"But it doesn't feel
like home to me,

"So tomorrow I'm leaving
to visit your brother jackson

"In the mountains.

If it suits me, I'll stay."

Jackson's house sat
on the edge of a cliff.

"Welcome to the mountains,
mother!" Jackson shouted.

"You're going
to love it here!"

Mrs. Tilby loved
the mountains

And the smell of pine
that filled the air.

Jackson's wife bess
taught her to ski,

But after a few weeks,

She felt like moving on.

"I know why you love
the mountains, jackson,"

Said mrs. Tilby.

"But it just doesn't feel
like home to me.

I'm leaving tomorrow."

"But where will you go?"

"I don't know, dear,"
said mrs. Tilby.

"There must be
someplace else."

She tried living
in lots of places.

She stayed in a cabin
by a lake

And in a fire tower
high above a forest.

She stayed in an adobe hut
in the middle of the desert.

She even spent time
on a riverboat.

[Horn blows]

And everywhere she went,
it was the same.

Mrs. Tilby was always happy
at first,

But after a few weeks,

She always wanted
to move on.

One morning, mrs. Tilby set off
back toward the apple orchard

When she saw
a shiny silver trailer.

"For sale" read the sign
in the window.

Mrs. Tilby leaped
out of the old green truck

And asked to see
the inside of the trailer.

It had a cozy bedroom,

A tiny bathroom,

And a kitchen
that folded out of sight.

Mrs. Tilby bought it
on the spot.

Now every few weeks,

Mrs. Tilby sets off
in the old green truck

With the shiny silver trailer
attached behind.

Sometimes she visits les
in the city...

Or tess at the seashore...

Or jackson and bess
in the mountains.

Sometimes she stays
in other places.

And in the autumn,

She goes back to the white house
by the orchard

To help wes
pick and sell apples.

Mrs. Tilby is always home,

And she is always
someplace else.

Mrs. Tilby could probably use
a map collection of her own.

In the meantime,
mine keeps growing.

All of my friends know
that I'm a map maniac,

So whenever they come across
an interesting one,

They send it to me,

And I think that's
what's inside here.

[Rattling]

[Chuckles]

I don't know what kind of map
could be inside of this box.

Wow!

It's a puzzle map
of the united states!

Ha ha ha ha!

And it's huge!

Look at this.

This is the northeast corner
of the united states.

It's a pop-up map.

I love it.

And this would be
new york city.

[Traffic noises]

Tall buildings...

Traffic jams...

Crowds of people...

Street music:

These are the sights and sounds
of the city.

It's a place
with so much energy,

It feels almost alive,

And that's what makes so many
people want to live here.

But city lovers sometimes need
a place they can go

To escape all
of that nonstop action,

Someplace high above
all the noise and the crowds.

[Cricket chirping]

Woman: my name is val gary,

And here in new york city,
I garden on my rooftop.

I've been interested
in gardening since
I was a little girl.

When I grew up,
I came to new york city,

And the question was
where I could grow things.

The answer was the rooftop.

This...this is called
lamb's ears,

And I wish
you could feel it.

It's as soft as a lamb's ear,
very furry, both sides.

The special thing
about gardening on a rooftop

Is you have to grow
everything in soil,

Which you try and make
as light as possible

So the containers
don't get so heavy

That they maybe go
straight through the roof

And land in somebody's
living room.

Everybody needs
a special place,

And this rooftop garden
is mine.

Man: my name
is danny murray.

This is my pride and joy:
flying pigeons on 135th street,

New york city, manhattan.

[Danny whistles]

[Whistles]

[Whistles]

[Whistles]

As a kid growing up
in this neighborhood,

They had a lot of pigeon coops
on the roof.

So as a little youngster
in the street looking up
all the time,

I, too,
wanted to fly birds.

These pigeons here are not
your regular street pigeons.

These are tipplers,
baldies, birminghams,

Red tiga flights,
blue tiga flights,

Silver flights, black baldies,
red tipplers, silver tipplers.

There's all kind
of birds:

Russian trumpeters,
russian high fliers,

Turbits, black turbits,
yellow turbits,

Owls, silver owls,

Yellow tigas,
black danishes, red danishes.

You have it all.
I have them.

I was born to raise birds.

I, uh...

I raise them
for their beauty,

And as you can see...

They're lovable.

Favorite spot up here.

[Whistles]

Across the street...

It's amazing how 30 years later,
I'm still flying birds.

Great hobby. Great hobby.

I think all the kids
in the neighborhood
should start doing this.

Ain't that beautiful?

[Whistles]

[Whistles]

When I see them up there
in that beautiful blue sky,

The feeling of being free,

That's what makes me
feel good.

I guess I'll be flying birds
for the rest of my life...

Flying pigeons
on the rooftops,

Where there's no trouble,

It's nice and peaceful,

The sun is shining,

And everything
is beautiful.

Some people call
their city rooftops tar beaches,

And they wouldn't trade that
stone and cement of the city

For anyplace
in the world,

But for others
who live near the sea,

There is nothing to replace
the sound of waves

Crashing on a rocky shore...

Or the sight
of a beautiful schooner,

Like the heritage,

Setting sail.

Levar:
during the summer months,

The lee family makes
the heritage their home.

Sailing is
their way of life.

Just look at all
of this coastline.

There are plenty of places
for people to go

If they want to live
near the seashore.

Then again, if water
doesn't turn you on

But mountains
peak [pique] your interest,

Then the biggest
are always found out west.

Personally,
when it comes to mountains,

My favorites can be found
even further west, in hawaii.

The mountains
aren't just mountains.

They're volcanoes.

The hawaiian islands were
actually formed by volcanoes

Spitting out molten rock
from inside the earth.

In fact, some are
still active today.

Every time kilauea erupts,

The island grows
and changes.

It's like
a work in progress.

Kilauea is sculpting new shapes
for the big island of hawaii,

And for one artist,

It's a place
that fuels creativity

And fires the imagination.

Man: living on the summit
of kilauea

Is quite an inspiration
to my work.

One views lava rocks,

The colors of the rocks,

The formations,
the textures, the surfaces,

And living in the forest,

One senses the quality
of the forest

And tries to transfer it
to the work.

The clay feels
very wonderful.

It's hard to describe
how it really feels.

It's like
touching the earth.

For this particular series
that I'm working on

Is a series, to me,
symbolizing the volcano,

Living so closely
to the volcano

And creating a vessel
from earth

To depict
the feeling of the volcano.

The opening of the volcano
is irregular

And not symmetrical,

So I tend to reflect that
in the opening of my vessels,

Whereas the rest of the piece
is quite perfect.

And to contrast
that perfection,

I create
a slight imperfection,

So then the piece
will feel more balance.

When a piece is done:

When it feels right
and looks right.

The glazing is a process
where one views the naked vessel

And almost asks
what it wants to wear.

All my glazes
come from the earth.

They're all earth minerals

That are combined
in different proportions

To give different textures
and surfaces and colors.

[Motor running]

The kiln basically fires
the vessel.

It creates a temperature
hot enough

To melt the glaze.

This particular process
that I'm using

Is called a raku process,

And it takes 3 hours
to fire.

When the volcano
is erupting,

There is a constant roar
in the background,

And this roar
is just awesome and powerful,

And as I am working,

I feel this power
coming through me,

I feel myself
getting stronger.

The most important thing
when we're working with anything

Is to really find
enjoyment in it

And to be able
to express yourself

Through whatever it is
that we enjoy

And to perfect it
and refine it

To a point where
it can express yourself

And our environment
and the planet that we live on.

I bet there are
lots of times when you
feel like hitting the road

And going someplace
you've never been.

Well, that's when a book
can be your passport
to someplace else.

Whether you head north, south,
east, or west,

Here are some books
that will show you the way,

But you don't have to take
my word for it.

She makes a map

Here's a map of her country.

The girl enjoys looking
for her own special place

On the map.

Everyone needs

Why don't you go to yours

Me on the map?

Hi. I'm steeledan.

I like to visit places
away from home,

But it's always great
to get back.

That's what these 2 mice

country mouse.

Town mouse gets a letter
from his country cousin.

He's so excited!

When he gets to the country,
he's in for some surprises.

He steps on a rock,
but it isn't really a rock.

It's a turtle shell!

Country mouse wants a taste
of the city, too.

He goes home
with town mouse.

The city has dangers
of its own:

Traffic...

And cats!

I think you'll agree
with the moral of the story,

Which is there's no place
like home.

That's why I recommend
town mouse country mouse.

Hi. I'm tisha.

Did you know that somewhere
in the world right now
it's already tomorrow?

I found that out
in a book called

Somewhere in the world
right now.

Somewhere
in the world right now,

It's deepest night.

A baker is baking bread
in england.

Elephants are sleeping
in africa.

In another part of the world,
it's daytime.

Fishing boats are busy
bringing in the catch.

Here's a busy rush hour
in a big city.

Everyone has their own place
in the world,

Whether the sun
is up or down.

Before you go to bed,
read this book.

Just one more piece.

This is where I live:

Los angeles, california.

L.a. Is where a lot of tv shows
and movies are made,

And since I'm an actor,

It makes sense
for me to live here.

Finished.

A perfect edition
to my travel room.

You know what I love most
about this room?

It's not just about the places
that I've been.

It's also filled with dreams
of places I have yet to go.

Hey, maybe one of those places
is where I'll see you...

Next time.
