NARRATOR: Collinwood in .

And Gerard Stiles, possessed by the spirit

of the warlock, Judah Zachary,

is now master of the great house.

He is succeeding in his plans

to wipe out the Collins family.

Quentin Collins is on trial for his life.

The charge, witchcraft.

The penalty, beheading.

And now Gerard, sure that Barnabas is a vampire,

goes to the Old House to destroy him,

while he lies vulnerable in his coffin.

Gerard!

Well, that's some frightening welcome, Julia.

What's the matter, did I frighten you?

No, no, I just didn't expect you.

What did you want?

I'll find it myself, if you don't mind.

How dare you?

What are you doing with that?

Don't play so innocent, Julia.

What are you going to do?

You know exactly what I'm going to do,

and I advise you to leave this house,

because it won't be very pleasant.

I don't know what you're talking about.

Okay, so you play your little games.

But I advise you, don't try to stop me

from what I plan to do.

Gerard, have you gone insane?

These b*ll*ts can k*ll you as well as anyone else.

Stop, what are you going to do?

Gerard!

Looking for a book?

Barnabas!

But it's daylight!

Of course, what else did you expect

at o'clock in the afternoon?

If you tell me the title of the book you're looking for,

perhaps I can help you.

What did you want, Gerard?

[suspenseful music]

What's wrong, Gerard?

You're standing right before me, in broad daylight.

Why do you think there's anything unusual about that?

You know what's unusual.

Vampirism?

Vampirism?

Well, what on Earth makes you think that I'm a vampire?

You know my answer to that, Barnabas.

Well, as I understand it, vampires cannot...

well, cannot survive during the daytime.

And isn't it also true that vampires,

their images cannot be reflected in mirrors?

Would you like me to stand in front of a mirror for you?

So, it's obviously that you've had

assistance from someone, and if I find...

Of course I've had assistance.

I've been fortunate enough to have someone nearby

offering a kind hand.

Did you want me, darling?

Gerard!

How nice to see you!

- Now won't you sit down? - No.

Would you like some tea?

No, thank you.

What about a glass of sherry, though it is a bit early.

Your composure is beautiful.

Take it while you can.

Enjoy it while you can, because I swear

that this wonderful little gathering

won't be going on for long.

[suspenseful music]

[door slamming]

Angelique, when I came to you for help,

I knew you would want something in return.

You didn't tell me then.

Tell me now what you expect.

I expect nothing.

For once in my life, there is no price.

I'm sorry, Angelique.

I appreciate what you've done for Barnabas,

but I'm afraid I cannot believe you.

You've never done anything for nothing.

Julia, I only did what any woman would do

who loved Barnabas.

Believe me.

I would like to believe you, but I'm afraid I can't.

Julia, I think Angelique and I should have

a talk alone for a moment.

Of course.

You are, after all, husband and wife.

And Julia, thank you.

If you hadn't warned me that Gerard knew about me,

I would have been lying dead forever in that coffin now.

He would have had to k*ll me first.

Then Angelique has saved us both.

Saved us for what, Barnabas?

For what?

[dramatic music]

Angelique, you can pretend in front of Julia,

but I think we know each other too well now for lies.

You saved my life, tell me the price now.

There is no price.

None.

Barnabas, I don't expect you to believe me,

not after all we've been through.

And I've only myself to blame.

Myself.

Angelique, you are extraordinary.

I've seen you play this scene before, many times,

but I must confess that I've never been so convinced.

Perhaps because it's the truth.

What is the truth?

That I love you.

No matter how much I fight my feelings,

I will always love you.

Spare me the charade.

You do not love me, Angelique.

You only want power over me.

Well then, why would I lift your curse?

You're free of me now.

I have no hold over you.

Barnabas, I did want you for myself.

But rather than see you dead,

I would see you free of my power, and free of me.

I do, I love you.

Reject me, revile me, despise me.

Have you not given me reason?

Yes, I admit that.

I wanted you.

I couldn't bear to have anyone else have you.

But everything I have done, none of it has

given me your love.

Angelique, we cannot love at will

anymore than we can prevent our love.

Well I know that.

It's why I ask nothing in return for your life

that you can't give me willingly.

All I want is your love.

Only if you're able to give it.

I only ask that, that you try.

Right now, I, I almost feel that

I'm an ordinary man, and you're an ordinary woman.

But you are.

You are an ordinary man, now that the curse has been lifted.

Forever?

Forever?

You are silent.

Yes.

Yes it will be forever, I swear it.

Oh, Barnabas, hold me.

I'm so afraid.

Afraid?

Of losing you.

You're human now.

Like anyone else, you can die, and you have enemies.

Please, please just hold me.

Do you believe me now?

Yes, I believe you, Angelique.

I cannot say that I love you, but I understand your love

for the first time since you came here from Martinique.

And does that make any difference?

I don't know.

[suspenseful music]

Barnabas, this is madness.

You must not believe her!

If you believe her, then she will be manipulating you,

and you will never know where you are.

Barnabas, if you believe her, you'll be

at her perpetual mercy.

You must not trust her!

But I do.

I must, Julia.

She's changed, and I have changed because of her.

I'm free now, I must believe her.

Oh, Barnabas, anything you feel beyond gratitude

will be a serious mistake.

She will use her power against you again.

Oh, Barnabas, I care for you too much.

You're, you're my good friend.

I don't want to lose you.

You will not lose me, Julia, not now.

I am not afraid of anything anymore.

I am ready for anything that might come along,

because I'm human now.

What am I doing standing here when I could be

outside in the sun?

Julia, excuse me,

I'd like to take a walk alone for a moment.

I understand.

[suspenseful music]

[suspenseful music]

Going up for a rest, Julia?

I'm not tired.

You had quite a night the other night

with Valerie, didn't you?

I don't know what you're talking about.

Perhaps I could help you.

When was the last time you saw your brother Barnabas

in the daylight?

About a half hour ago.

And before that, this morning.

Or you may remember that.

I am not referring to today.

Oh, you mean yesterday and the day before?

Yes, I've seen him all those days.

As a matter of fact, I think I've seen him

every day since we arrived in Collinsport.

Then you are the only one that has.

Come here.

Who was that?

Barnabas Collins.

Which one?

The father.

The father?

My father.

Are you certain?

Because I believe there is only one Barnabas Collins.

Just one.

And I believe he is living at the Old House,

And I also believe...

That he is a vampire.

Yes, you have already told us that.

Gerard, as a doctor, I'm very concerned about you.

You seem to be succumbing to the hysteria in this house.

You yourself are saying that you are seeing vampires

and supernatural creatures.

Barnabas is not what you think he is.

No.

Barnabas is quite human.

All too human, I'm afraid.

Excuse me.

[suspenseful music]

Well, what are you doing here?

I want my check, if you don't mind.

Here.

Wait, what is this?

This is only half my allowance.

That's all you will be getting until the trial is over.

That trial is costing this family a fortune.

But I have no doubt that the rest of my allowance

is in your pocket, with everything else

you've bled from the Collins.

Now this is my money, and I demand it now!

What a bore you are, Gabriel.

[ghostly laughter]

Father? Father is that you?

Father, is that you laughing?

[ghostly laughter]

Father, why have you come back?

Why?

[suspenseful music]

Angelique, do you know what the daylight is like?

I've never seen more beauty than I have

in these past few hours.

Happy?

Oh, I've never known such happiness.

More than I could ever hope to have known.

I'm almost like a child.

I can hardly wait for the morning.

I'm so glad.

You seem to be very busy.

Yes.

I'm answering a note from Charles Dawson.

What did he want?

He's asked me to testify.

Well, as prosecuting attorney,

he must want you to testify against Quentin.

Yes, that's right.

And?

Well, I'm going to do it.

But you can't.

I forbid it,

Quentin is innocent!

No, Barnabas.

He must never be set free!

Quentin is evil.

He's possessed by the spirit of Judah Zachary!

[dramatic music]

How did you know Judah Zachary?

Isn't it remarkable?

All the years we've known one another,

and yet you never knew who it was that made me as I am.

Then it was...

Judah Zachary, yes.

But how?

It happened long before I met you, in .

I'd just moved to the village of Bedford,

taking a position as a chambermaid there.

One of the prominent families.

The first time I met Judah Zachary, I loathed him.

Somehow, mysteriously...

He...

I was drawn to him.

And without my even knowing it, I came under his spell.

He made me a member of his coven.

Later Judah was tried for witchcraft and beheaded.

One of the judges who convicted him was Amadeus Collins,

your great uncle.

But it was I who testified against him.

They put a black hood over him

so that he couldn't look at me and control me.

It was my testimony that proved he was a warlock.

If I hadn't testified against him,

they would have beheaded me as well.

But Judah d*ed vowing to return and destroy your family.

And me.

Then you were Miranda.

The Miranda that the newspapers would talk so much about.

ANGELIQUE: Yes.

And in reward for your testimony,

they gave you your life and exile.

Yes, I went to the West Indies,

long after that, to Martinique,

where I met Josette and finally you.

But I always knew that someday Judah would return for me.

But why do you think that Judah possesses Quentin?

It all began with Gerard.

One day he called me Miranda.

I thought no one but Judah would know that.

Then why do you think that Judah possesses

Quentin and not Gerard?

I had a vision of Amadeus Collins as he was in ,

in the courtroom when he promised me my freedom

in return for my testimony.

So don't you see, I knew then that Judah had returned,

but not as himself.

I suspected Gerard.

And so I used my powers to conjure up

an image of Judah as he exists here and now,

And the face that I saw was that of Quentin Collins!

No, Angelique, no!

If anyone is possessed, it's Gerard!

Why do you think he named you Miranda?

He explained that.

He said he'd been reading Judah Zachary's journal.

The description of me had reminded him of me.

He was lying.

All of your strange experiences

have been made by Judah acting through Gerard.

Why are you so sure it's Gerard?

Angelique, I have come from the th century.

In the future, Gerard is a spirit, an evil spirit.

He will try to possess the souls of two children.

David Collins, the boy who's living there now,

and his friend Hallie Stokes.

And he will try, and he will destroy

the great house of Collinwood.

And Angelique, I know that in this time,

he will m*rder Quentin Collins.

And soon.

Gerard?

Well then if that's true, Quentin will be acquitted.

Judah Zachary will continue to exist.

I'm so confused, Barnabas.

Tell me what to do.

You must trust me.

You must refuse to testify against Quentin in the trial.

Now will you?

Yes.

Yes, if you think it's best.

I do.

If anyone is a thr*at to us, it is Gerard Stiles.

Thank you, Julia, this is most helpful.

Well I hope so, I've never seen you so upset.

You look pale as a ghost.

I've just a dizzy spell, I suppose,

but I think I'm fine now.

JULIA: I'm glad.

Julia?

JULIA: Yes?

Something tells me that you...

that you dislike Gerard as much as I do, is that correct?

How do you suggest such a question?

It's obvious that you either hate him

or are terrified of him, or both.

Are you suggesting that it's possible that he

can be terrifying, or could hurt me?

Yes, I am suggesting that.

He is a loathsome pig!

Now, it's good that we hate and fear.

It keeps our guard up.

And our guard needs to be up, especially mine,

because Gerard knows I'm going to break my father's will.

GHOSTLY VOICE: No, Gabriel, do not try.

Do not try!

Did you hear that?

What?

Did you hear that voice?

What's wrong?

That voice!

What voice?

GHOSTLY VOICE: Gabriel, do not try!

- Do not try! - Stop it!

[suspenseful music]

[Julia Thinking] Something is terrifying him.

What could it be?

[suspenseful music]

[wind howling]

Oh, Father, please leave me alone!

Leave me alone.

Hello, Gabriel.

Oh, no!

You m*rder*d me, deny that!

Father, Father, it wasn't me, it was Gerard!

He made me do it, Father.

Father, he lied to me.

He told me I was going to be your heir.

Then he said Quentin was going to be it.

And he goaded me into k*lling you, father.

Please, he goaded me.

You watch, you watch!

No!

- Lies, Gabriel, lies! - No, no!

Lies.

You've lied your whole life.

You will lie no more.

I'm everywhere, Gabriel.

Everywhere with you!

I will do to you what you did to me.

I will make you die.

Oh, no.

I will make you die!

Father.

Father, it wasn't me, it was Gerard!

Please, punish Gerard, not me!

Punish Gerard!

Gerard, I'm going to make sure you never hurt me again,

Gerard Stiles!
