[eerie music]

NARRATOR:The great house at Collinwood.

From out of the past, the spirit of James Forsythe

has come to claim what is due him.

When Morgan Collins spent the night in the locked room,

James Forsythe took possession of his body

and now, through Morgan, is able to take revenge

on the entire Collins family.

Meanwhile, Melanie has brought word

that Gabriel has returned and wants Laura

to meet him at midnight in the deserted gazebo.

[eerie music]

[gasps]

You're not frightened of me too, are you?

No of course not, you just startled me that's all.

You look so, so pale in this light.

How do I look?

Well Gabriel, you look so tired

and so very worried.

How do you think, how do you think it was?

It wasn't easy, you know, running from place

to place, then resting for a few moments,

then running again.

Yes I'm tired.

Of course, the worst is over.

I'm here now.

Yes Mother, indeed you are.

[ominous music]

[eerie music]

Gabriel, what's the matter?

Why are you turning away from me?

I've got to keep moving.

Gabriel, listen to me.

I can't deny that you failed the family,

but now is not the time to dwell on that.

Now is the time to come home

and let your family take care of you.

Oh back to that prison?

At Collinwood?

No I can't go back there, Mother.

No matter how cleverly you tuck me away,

police are gonna find me--

It was all a mistake.

You didn't do anything.

But I'm not gonna stand there and prove my innocence.

I'm going away, Mother.

I'm getting out of the country and,

ah those jewels.

Oh those jewels, they'll help me.

It'll help me get away, Mother, far away.

Gabriel listen to me.

If going away would help you I'd give you anything

you need to go, but it won't help.

When you have these att*cks, you should

be with your family, not with strangers.

I don't know anything about any att*cks.

All I know is you talk too much!

All your kind is you're always talking!

You think it's so precious, all those words.

It's not what I want, Mother.

I don't want your words.

Gabriel--

I said I don't want your words!

No!

Give me those jewels or I'll cut them off you.

LAURA: Gabriel, no!

Gabriel!

Stop calling me that!

I hate that name, I hate myself!

Oh and I hate you so much.

But what are you doing here?

LAURA: You asked me to meet you,

don't you remember?

I did?

Well you're a fool to come.

Perhaps, but I'm still your mother.

My mother?

You lie, just to get me to stop

from what I'm supposed to do.

Well it's not going to stop me, Mother, all those lies.

Because I'm going to k*ll you,

and I'm going to k*ll everyone else.

Gabriel listen to me, I am your mother.

This is the only family I'll ever need, this Kn*fe.

No Gabriel, no!

Get out of here!

I'll take care of him.

Oh you mustn't hurt him, he's not well, he's confused.

You seem very concerned considering

he was about to k*ll you!

LAURA: He is my son!

And Stella was my sister, but she

had no one to plead for her life, did she?

[grunting]

[dramatic music]

Gabriel, you k*lled him.

You k*lled him.

[knocking]

Melanie.

Now listen, you've got to come out of there.

Can you hear me, please listen to me!

Go away, Quentin.

Melanie.

Now look, just because Kendrick Young knows

about your att*cks, that's no reason

to lock yourself in a room.

There's another reason, a reason Kendrick must never know.

I k*lled his sister.

God help me, I k*lled that innocent girl.

QUENTIN: Now listen to me, you can't blame yourself.

And why can't I?

All my life I've wanted to know who I was,

well now it doesn't make any difference

because I'm as much a Collins as anyone else,

the mad Collinses!

And this room will be my asylum for the rest of my life.

QUENTIN: You can't talk like that.

Now you've got to come out.

Why, so they can lock me away somewhere else?

They're not gonna lock you anywhere.

MELANIE: Oh Quentin, stop wasting time with me.

Go and find Mother and Gabriel.

What about 'em?

What about Mother and Gabriel?

LAURA: Oh, oh thank heavens he's alive.

KENDRICK: Yes, alive, to pay for the m*rder of Stella.

No, leave him alone.

Leave us all alone.

What's over is over.

What am I supposed to do,

forget the fact he k*lled my sister?

He didn't!

KENDRICK: What'd you say?

Whatever else he's done,

whatever else he's been,

he did not m*rder your sister.

I know...

You know what?

If Gabriel is innocent, then someone else is guilty!

Who k*lled my sister?

Tell me, who k*lled Stella?

[dramatic music]

You must tell me who m*rder*d my sister.

I know that Gabriel didn't do it.

I don't know who did.

Believe me.

No I don't believe you, and you must tell me before--

Before what, Mr. Young?

Oh!

It's all right.

- I think you better go. - Oh no.

I said go.

All right, I'll go.

Now I'll go.

But do save a little time for me, Mrs. Collins

because I will be back.

Get out of here.

[Gabriel groans]

- Is he hurt bad? - I don't think so.

You'll be all right old man, now come on

I'm gonna help you get on your feet

and we're gonna go back to Collinwood.

Collinwood, Collinwood?

I was there when I was a baby

and it was happy then, hopeful.

But there's no hope for Gabriel now.

There's no hope.

[knocking]

MELANIE: Go away, I don't want to see anyone.

KENDRICK: I think you want to see me.

Kendrick?

KENDRICK: Melanie please, let me in.

No I don't want to see anyone.

KENDRICK: Melanie, I am going to see you

now open this door, please!

[pounding]

Melanie!

Melanie!

[pounding]

Well now you see, the madwoman is--

Don't talk like that.

MELANIE: Why shouldn't I?

Because I love you!

You love me?

Oh if you knew how I've wanted to hear that.

Now you've heard it and it's true.

Melanie, I don't want you to torment yourself anymore.

Torment myself?

I'm not tormenting myself, you're the tormentor.

You come here and tell me that you love me?

What else can that be but torment?

Kendrick, we met too late.

Oh no, we met exactly at the right time, Melanie.

We are right for each other.

Things that puzzled me are clear now.

The emotional running away you were doing--

You did some running away yourself last night.

Yes I did.

I had to sort things out,

and it's all clear in my mind and I'm back now, Melanie.

We're going to face these att*cks together.

Together?

What can you do?

You've got to tell me all about them,

how they started, how--

Oh Kendrick no!

You want a happy ending, and for a Collins

there's no such thing as a happy ending.

Melanie, there is, just because you had these att*cks--

It's not just the att*cks.

What if you were to find out something else about me?

KENDRICK: Nothing you could tell me

could change my love for you.

No, I'm not sure of that.

I am, Melanie.

Tell me anything you want.

It can't make any difference.

Well...

I want you to know that,

I mean you've got to know--

Melanie, what is it?

Kendrick, I can't talk to you

when you're staring at me like that.

Please don't look at me.

No I can't.

Melanie, you're trembling please, please.

Oh don't upset yourself, oh it's not worth it, please.

No, I'm not going to be frightened anymore.

In this room, no one can hurt me

and I can harm no one so long as I'm here

so I'm never going to leave.

KENDRICK: That's nonsense!

Is it?

I've heard of cases like mine.

People who couldn't face life,

but didn't have the courage to die.

You are going out with me tonight.

Do you understand?

If the only thing you can choose between

is life and death I won't let you make that choice.

Melanie, we can have a life together.

A life together, and what happens

when my att*cks come and they will come!

If they do, we will face them together.

You, you seem so strong, so sure.

It's strange you should say that.

After I found out what happened to Stella I,

I completely went to pieces.

Knowing you, talking to you

gave me whatever strength I had.

Kendrick, please.

Don't talk about that now.

Melanie, I wish you had gotten to know Stella,

I mean really know her.

She was a lovely girl.

When she was very young, she always

used to come looking for me.

She always wanted to do what I was doing.

Who would've guessed in the end

I would've come looking for her?

I'm sorry.

I'm so terribly sorry.

Melanie I know how your family feels about me.

I know the things that we have to fight,

but we will overcome them.

How can I overcome anything?

By taking one step, go out with me tonight.

I...

I don't know if I can leave this room.

I have to think.

All right, think.

Think about some young, poor, beautiful girl

lying in a grave in the woods.

She has no more chance, but you still do if you take it!

I'll be downstairs in an hour.

Be there.

Strange, you know I never thought

I'd be at Collinwood again, and here I am.

Locked up in the tower with my

brother Quentin, exactly the same.

QUENTIN: No, no, not exactly.

Oh, oh right yes, you made sure

that I couldn't escape this time, right?

No that's not the only difference.

You see, you hadn't been in the room before.

But now you've been there.

So now you've got to tell me what you found out

so that I can help find out about the curse,

and so that you can help to save all of us.

Morgan spent the night in the room.

Then he should have saved all of us.

I don't think so.

I don't think Morgan spending

the night in the room did anything.

I don't think it satisfied the demands of the room.

Oh well what does this thing want?

I don't know!

But it's up to you, and you've got to try

to remember and tell me whatever you can

so that another Collins won't have

to spend another night in this place.

Gabriel, please!

Now look.

You owe the family something.

Oh you're so smug.

You're so righteous about what I owe the family,

but you never spent the night in that room did you?

And I did.

I did.

And I can tell you the feeling

of being desperately alone, and then

and you're not alone anymore,

and then something so hideous that--

What?

It was just...

What?

I don't remember.

QUENTIN: What do you mean you don't remember?

I don't know I just, I mean I know it's here

in my head, but I just can't,

I mean I go over it times every night

and I try to remember everything that happened every--

All right, all right, what is it?

All right, now look now look, just take it easy,

calm down, try to get a hold of yourself

but tell me what it is!

Now come on!

I'm standing.

I'm standing in the room and I feel,

I feel terror.

I mean terror and then...

Quentin, no I know!

I know what terrified me!

I know what happened in that room!

[dramatic music]

All right, what was it?

What, what are you talking about?

What you saw in the room!

Now tell me!

You know you're always sticking

your nose in where it doesn't belong.

[grunting]

Let go of me, I'll k*ll you!

All right now you know who I am?

Who you are, I know I hate you!

- Why? - I hate all of you!

Why?

Why me, and it's all out in the open!

Sit down will you?

Now just shut up.

Now look, you get some rest.

I'll be back in the morning.

[rattling]

I Can't rest, I can't rest I've got too much to do.

Got too much k*lling to do.

No, I should've k*lled him when he was here.

That would've been one less.

That's all right.

The door will open again

and they will all be dead.

[ominous music]

How is he?

Ah, he was almost ready to tell me

and then he had one of his att*cks.

Then he tried to k*ll me.

Quentin, what are we going to do?

Well we've got to give him more time

so he can get calm.

But there isn't any time.

The police are looking for him now,

even though he didn't k*ll that girl.

He's never going to be able to prove he's innocent

to the police or to Kendrick.

Yeah, he was here earlier.

One of the servants convinced him that

I'd gone out for a while.

He said he was coming back.

All right, all right, when he comes

I'll tell him you're still out.

No, no, I've got to talk to him sooner or later.

What am I going to tell him?

Melanie k*lled his sister?

Oh I wish I knew what to do.

Perhaps I do.

Did he say where he is?

I heard him say he was going to the hotel.

All right.

I'll make a stop by the hotel.

I'm gonna have a little talk with Mr. Young.

Won't do any good, he's a very persistent young man.

So am I, Mother, so am I.

I'm going to tell him a few things,

for one I'm going to tell him that Melanie

had nothing to do with his sister's death, none of us did.

We're all very sorry and that's that.

LAURA: Why should he believe you?

Because Mother, I'm going to tell him

something about the Collins family

that will make him believe me.

LAURA: Nothing about the room.

Whatever's necessary.

Nothing about the room I said,

do you hear me Quentin, I forbid it!

[clock chimes]

[knocking]

Well I'm glad to see you are

finally at home, Mrs. Collins.

You're wasting your time, Mr. Young.

I have nothing to tell you.

You are only one of the reasons I am here tonight.

I've come to take Melanie out for the evening.

You've come to what?

I think you heard me the first time.

Well that's impossible.

Melanie can't go anywhere with anybody.

I am not anybody, I happen to love her very much.

And I intend to help her.

Mrs. Collins, I would never harm Melanie.

The harm has already been done.

KENDRICK: What does that mean?

I think you'd best forget it.

What harm are you talking about?

I want to know if it affects Melanie.

Melanie is not a normal girl, Mr. Young.

You've seen that for yourself.

Only the family can take care of her.

Her family, the great Collins family.

That's why she runs frightened to her room every time

because that's all she's ever seen.

Whatever troubles we have we prefer

to deal with ourselves.

How, how can you deal with your troubles

if you're building them on a wall of lies?

The truth has been missing in this house

for so long, Mrs. Collins, that you can't recognize it.

Mrs. Collins, let me help you.

Perhaps we were enemies at one time,

before I fell in love with Melanie.

But now I realize we must work together

and break down this door.

And let truth in.

Mr. Young.

Who k*lled my sister?

You know who she was acquainted with.

You know who had reason to k*ll her.

I assure you, we know of no one

who had any reason to k*ll Stella.

Well then perhaps there was no reason.

Perhaps it was a mindless, senseless act after all.

Gabriel did not do it.

Well if someone did it, who, who did?

I don't know.

All right then first tell me where it happened and how!

No, I can't tell you anything.

Mama.

You had better tell him.

I tried, but I couldn't, so you tell him, please.
