Anty? Anty?

Oh, my.

What a beautiful view.

Oh, but it's kind of high up.

Um, little Anty?

Bob's come to get you.

Hello?

[ Bob's echo]: Hello?

Huh?

Who is that?

[ echo]: Who is that?

Oh, my.

What a strange voice for an, um... ant.

It sounds... familiar.

[ clearing throat ]

What's your name?

[ echo]: What's your name?

Um...

Oh, my. My name?

My name... Oh, ah.

My name's B-Bob.

[ echo]: My name's B-Bob.

Oh, my.

I don't like that at all.

How can it have the same name as me?

I don't know what to think of that.

And his voice-- it sounds so big.

Who are you talkingto, Bob? [ gasps ]

Oh, it's you, Wartz.

I, um, I... I don't know what to do.

I was looking for an... [ gulps ] ant

and when I called out, Bob answered me back.

Bob?

Aren't you Bob?

Tha-That's what he calls himself.

There's another Bob in the World Tree?

Where is this other Bob, Bob?

I can't see anyone up here but you.

Maybe it's Winslow, Bob,

playing a trick on you.

But the voice said his name was Bob.

Is that you,Winslow?

I guess it isn't Winslow.

Wonder who it is.

Bob? Are you there?

[ echo]: Bob? Are you there?

Yikes!Yikes!

Let's get out of here!Let's get out of here!

Hey, hold it.

No, Ick, there's a strange voice

hiding in the World Tree.

And it belongs to a really scary creature called, um...

Bob.

Bob?

Since when did any scary creature call itself Bob?

Now tell me, Bob, where did you guys hear

this scary, strange voice named Bob?

Up at Broken Branch Leap.

I'm never going back up there again.

Me, neither.

This Bob is really mean.

It talks back to you by repeating

everything you say to it.

It's not nice like our Bob.

Oh, thank you, Wartz.

That's very nice of you to say.

Interesting.

You know, I once heard a strange voice underwater.

And you know who it was?

If you don't mind me calling you that.

Oh, dear, you say

it was at Broken Branch Leap?

Is that where it happened?

Yeah, and I'm never going there again.

Well, let me put you at ease, dears.

That voice you heard is an echo... echo... echo... echo...

[ laughing]: echo.

Oh, no.

Oh, I should have known.

Bob, the echo.

Oh, that's so, so...

terrible.

Um, Madge, what's an echo?

Well, actually, my astute little frog,

an echo is nothing to be afraid of at all.

That's right, Madge.

An echo is when you hear a sound

more than once, because it's reflected

off hard surfaces around you.

That's right.

And some places like your Broken Branch Leap

are very good places for echoes.

When your voice

hits the cliff face right there in front of you,

the sound bounces back

as an echo.

So the sound you're hearing is, in fact, your own voice, Bob.

You mean, Bob is me?

Uh, I mean, I'm Bob?

I mean, that sound was my own voice coming back to me

because of an echo of me?

[ laughing]

That's right, Bob.

I think if you go back up there with Snook,

you might have some fun with this other... Bob.

And by that I mean, your echo.

Come on, let's go.

Okay, I guess.

I am so confused.

Hmm, great view up here, right, guys?

Oh, my, Wartz!

I still don't think we should have come back here.

What if, um... [ gulps ] he's here?

Bob, don't worry.

It's just an echo.

Yeah, don't worry, Bob.

Like Madge said, an echo in nothing to be afraid of.

In fact, it's kind of fun.

Hello, echo.

[ Snook's echo]: Hello, echo.

See, guys?

That's the sound of my own voice bouncing off the cliff face

and coming back to us.

Go ahead, Bob, you give it a try.

Um... okay.

Hello, echo!

[ echoing ]: Hello, echo!

It worked.

It was my own voice all along.

That's right.

See, the sound of your voice bounces back at you

just like a ball rebounding off a wall.

So, Snook,

what exactly is a sound?

Ah, now, that's a good question, Wartz.

A sound is anything that you can hear.

Any noise we make, or the noises around us, are sounds.

Aren't they, Snook?

Yep. The sound we make travels all the way

to bounce off a hard surface--

like the cliff face over there--

and then races back to us to create an echo.

And sound travels really fast.

Even faster than Burdette can fly.

How fast are you?

[ echoing ]: How fast are you?

Not very fast.

I'm a sloth!
