This is a compost heap.

A real compost heap?

It is a real live compost heap.

What do you use a compost heap for, scott?

Well, a compost pile is really the beginnings

Of making some soil to put back on the soil

To make the soil healthier.

Wait. All this stuff breaks down and becomes soil?

It does. It breaks down and becomes soil.

Oh. Well, how do you make a compost pile?

Well, you take things like vegetable scraps,

Things that you eat, whatever's left over from that.

But how does it go from being a pile of old fruit and vegetable scraps

To being compost?

Well, that is a sort of mysterious, natural process.

And it breaks down slowly until it eventually becomes soil,

Just the way the leaves break down in the forest.

Whoa, scott.

Now, riona, if you hold these sticks,

I'll get the glue.

Oh, hey! Riona and I were just building a birdhouse together.
