(dance music)

- I go like this.

(grunts)

And then you come back at me like this.

(grunts)

And then we both.

- Hey!

- Come on, Seamus.

I can't do this all by myself.

- Ah, looks like you're doing a grand job there, son.

What is it you're doing exactly?

- We're supposed to give a demonstration in

our karate class tomorrow and Seamus won't even

practice with me.

- What's the point?

I'm no good at it and I never will be.

- Is that so?

- It's not fun unless you do it good, grandpa.

- Jakers.

If I believed that I would have never have done

half the things I done.

Come here, son.

You remind me of a time long ago when my

dear friend, Dannan, forgot the joy of doing

things just for the sake of doing them.

It all started one crisp and sharp autumn day.

(chattering)

(laughs)

(clears throat)

- Class.

Quiet down now, children.

We have a very special visitor today.

Dannan, would you like to introduce our guest?

- I'd be very proud, Mr Hornsby.

(clears throat)

It is my great pleasure to introduce me very own

grandmother O'Mallard.

One of the best performers of traditional Irish dancing

in the whole county.

(crowd applauds)

(chattering)

(laughs)

- Irish dances.

So?

- So?

I'll be coming once a week to share some of

my knowledge with the cooperative and enthusiastic

members of this class.

- Oh, that's great, Mrs O'Mallard.

I can't wait.

- You don't have to wait.

We can start right now.

Mr Hornsby.

(violin hums)

On your feet now, everyone.

We start with a simple jig.

I'm sure you've all seen it done a thousand times before.

But you may find it was a little easier to

watch it than it is to dance it.

In the jig we stomp our feet in a lively manner

with head high.

Keep the upper body as quiet as possible, but

keep those heels stomping.

You keep working at it, Gosford.

It'll come to you.

You're a good dancer, Hector.

- Huh?

Oh, well, I'm not dancing.

I'm just having some fun.

- Well then, you're good at having fun.

- Oh, uh, thanks.

(laughs)

- This is mighty!

I'm a born natural, hehe.

It must be in me blood.

Oh, this is great.

- Dannan, try to keep your upper body quiet

and let your feet do the talking.

(chuckles)

- Dannan's feet are shouting, not talking.

(laughs)

- Keep it up, Dannan.

- You're looking, uh, enthusiastic.

- Woo!

I could dance like this for an eternity.

(laughs)

(chuckles)

- Did you all hear what Dannan just said?

That she felt like she could dancer forever.

- I really did.

- In some contests it is the one who dances

the longest who is considered the best.

So, shall we all try dancing another round?

(chattering)

(violin hums)

- [Piggley] Jakers, Dannan, that was a great class

your grandmother gave us this morning.

- [Dannan] I know, she's a brilliant dancer so she is.

- Oh I couldn't stop stomping me heels all day.

- Did you hear me grandma say that I was the best dancer?

- She didn't say you were the best dancer.

She just said you danced the longest.

- Well, the one who dances the longest is

sometimes considered the best.

- Not this time.

- Ah, Hector, go home and tell your mother

that she wants you.

(laughs)

- It must be pretty embarrassing for her to have

such a terrible dancer for a granddaughter.

(chuckles)

- Oh don't be listening to him, Dannan.

- I'm not listening to him, Ferny.

After all, we all know I danced very well today.

Didn't I, Piggley.

- No, not really.

- What?

- Eh, but you sure were having a good time.

- Ferny?

What did you think of my dancing today?

- Well, uh.

Let's say you had great enthusiasm.

- Oh now you're both just jealous because I have

me grandmother's talent.

Sure I'm a regular chip off the old block so I am.

- Gosh, grandpa.

Dannan was really bad, huh?

- Terrible.

Worst dancer I ever saw.

But that wasn't the main problem.

- [Both] It wasn't?

- No.

The big problem was that Dannan loved her

grandma more than anything in the world and

she wanted her to be proud of the way she danced.

- Oh.

She wanted to be good.

- I suppose she did, Seamus.

- It's going to be a cold one, you'll need an

extra blanket there's no doubt about that.

Did you get all your homework done, dear?

- It's all finished, grandma.

- Ah, then the only thing left to do is.

(smooches)

Go to sleep.

- I will, grandma.

Grandma?

- What is it, my love?

- Today at school, you said the one who dances

the longest is considered the best.

- Ah, sometimes that's true.

I remember your grandfather used to dance all night long.

You know, Dannan, you remind me a lot of him.

- So he danced well then?

(chuckles)

- Heavens no.

He was awful.

He could clear out the entire room when he danced.

What with all his flailing and kicking and shouting.

(chuckles)

Ah, but he did have a great time at it and I had

a great time right along with him.

No one had a bigger heart or more spirit than your

grandfather.

You really are a lot like him, Dannan.

- Great.

- Are you feeling all right, my love?

- Oh yes, I'm fine.

- Well, goodnight then.

I'll see you in the morning.

- Goodnight, grandma.

- [Grandpa Voiceover] Dannan's greatest fear was realized.

She was a bad dancer just like her grandfather.

She felt just terrible thinking she had

embarrassed her grandmother at school that day.

(rooster crows)

(door knocks)

(groans)

- Who's there?

(clears throat)

Dannan, is everything all right?

- I'm sorry, Mrs Winks, but I needed to see

Piggley right away.

It's very important.

- It must be.

Come in, come in out of that.

- Thank you very much, Mrs Winks.

(baas)

- Okay, everybody, rise and shine, rise and shine.

Time to greet another day.

(baas)

Hey, hey, how about a little cooperation here?

I'm telling you it's time to get up.

(trumpet hums)

Look at that.

I get no respect around here.

It's like I'm just another sheep or something.

(symbals bang)

(gong bangs)

Look, if you guys don't start shaping up I'm

going to have to bring in a sheep dog to control you.

A sheep dog.

You know, the kind with teeth.

Okay, you asked for it.

(barks)

(baas)

The sheep dog has arrived.

(yawns)

- Piggley, what's so important that you had to

wake me up this early on Saturday morning?

- Uh, I don't know.

(yawns)

Dannan wouldn't tell me until we got here.

- Boys, I need your help.

You have to teach me how to dance.

(yawns)

- [Both] Huh?

- The next time me grandmother comes to school

I want to make her as proud as can be

with the way I do me jig.

So pull up your socks, lads, and let's get started.

(lively music)

- All right, Dannan, here we go.

- Well now, this isn't too hard.

Oh dear.

(groans)

Oh no.

(screams)

(grunts)

(baas)

(whistles)

(whistles)

(whistles)

(whistles)

(barks)

(baas)

(chuckles)

- Who says you can't teach an old sheep new tricks.

- Piggley, do you really think all this foot

painting stuff is going to help me learn to dance?

- Of course it will.

Me mother taught me father how to dance this way.

- Even if you don't dance better, your feet

will look great.

- Okay, uh, we'll start out slow.

With no music at first.

Are you ready?

- Ready as a rainbow, Piggley.

- Okay then.

Step red, blue, red then blue, red, blue

then red, blue, red then blue, red, blue.

Ferny, let's add some music.

- Right.

(lively music)

- Move a little faster, Dannan.

- Oh dear.

- [Piggley] Red, blue, red.

Blue, red, blue.

Red, blue, red.

- I'm trying, Piggley.

- I don't think I can watch this.

- It's not pretty that's for sure.

- Wow, wow, wow.

My feet might be red and blue, but me backside

is black and blue.

(baas)

(barks)

(baas)

- I can get used to this.

(baas)

(whistles)

Huh?

Oh no I can't resist.

(barks)

(baas)

- I'm not so sure about this.

- Oh don't worry about a thing, Dannan.

Now you can concentrate on the moves and

not worry about tripping over your own feet.

(lively music)

- Okay then, dance, Dannan, dance.

(screams)

- [Dannan] Piggley!

- Oh, well, maybe we should try something else, Piggley.

(baas)

(barks)

- This dog stuff is for the birds and I am a sheep.

(cries)

(baas)

- Right, left, right.

Left, right, left.

Left, right, left, right, left, right, left.

- Uh, you worked hard today, Dannan.

- I did, didn't I?

- Oh you did.

- And I got better as well, didn't I?

- Hm, not really.

But we've only just started.

- Yeah, we've still got the rest of the week to practice.

- And we'll try something else tomorrow.

- Thanks, boys.

- Did you practice all week, grandpa?

- Oh yes.

We weren't about to give up on Dannan until

she was ready to give up on herself.

- Did she get any better?

- I'm afraid not, Sean.

In fact, she got worse because all the joy had

gone out of her dancing as well.

- Oh man, I feel terrible for her.

- What happened, grandpa?

- Well now, Sunday night finally rolled around.

The night before Dannan's grandmother was to

come back to school and give us another dancing lesson.

Dannan was worried sick about how she was going to

to perform the next day.

It gave her a dreadful nightmare.

(violin hums)

(laughs)

- Just like your grandfather.

Just like your grandfather.

Just like your grandfather.

Just like your grandfather.

Just like your grandfather.

(screams)

(panting)

- Dannan, my love, what happened?

Are you all right?

- Oh, grandma, I'm sorry that I'm such a terrible dancer.

- What?

What do you mean, dear?

- I know I embarrassed you last week when I

was dancing around like a mad thing.

But I can't help it, I've been practicing all

week to try and get better, but I'm all feet and elbows.

I'm never going to be a good dancer.

- Oh.

Dannan, you could never embarrass me.

I'm always proud of you no matter how well you dance

or sing or do your homework because you do

the best you can.

That's always something to be proud of.

- But you're such a good dancer and I dance

just like me grandfather.

(laughs)

- Yes you do and I loved the way he danced.

- You did?

- Your grandfather put his whole heart into

his dancing and that's a wonderful thing to see.

So, don't you worry your pretty little head

about embarrassing me tomorrow.

I want you to go out on that dance floor

and dance up a storm.

- Okay, grandma.

I will.

(smooches)

(chattering)

- Hey, Dannan, is your grandmother coming back

to teach us some more dances today?

- [Dannan] Yes she is, Hector.

(chuckles)

- Is she going to let you dance?

- Of course she is.

Anyone who enjoys dancing should be dancing.

That's what me grandma says.

- But.

- I hope you enjoy it, Hector.

You're a very good dancer.

Did anyone ever tell you that?

- Oh, uh.

I'm not really dancing.

I'm just having fun.

- Well that's what I'm doing as well.

(chuckles)

- Come on then, children, let's go inside

and dance up a storm.

That means you as well, Hector.

- Yes, Mrs O'Mallard.

(chattering)

(lively music)

- Wow, so Dannan wasn't a very good dancer, but

she still loved it, right, grandpa?

- That's right, Seanny.

She did it for the fun of it.

- How about it, Seamus?

Do you have fun doing karate?

- I love doing karate.

- Well if you love it you should do it.

Like Dannan's grandma said.

- Okay, but after hearing grandpa's story I've

got a couple of new moves to try on ya.

(chuckles)

- Bring them on.

(instrumental music)
