There's a major disaster
in Novato.

Joe, Gail and I have been
recalled for Mutual Aid Response.

I'll go with you.

Captain Delany,
San Francisco Fire Department.

This is Gage and
DeSoto from LA County.

ROY: You got an
assignment for us?

We've got two chemists
unaccounted for in Building 3.

Wanna give it a try?

PETE: Hey, Roy! John! In here.

CHARLIE: Oh, man! Hey, Vince!

This halyard is jammed again.

Let me give you a hand with it.

I don't know why we
don't replace that block.

It's the third time this
month she's jammed on us.

I'll get it. I need
the exercise.

Hey, Vince!

I bet you can't make it
up there in 90 seconds.

You got yourself a bet.

Yeah, but...

Laurie, the seats
are 10 rows up,

and they're right in the middle.

They're right in the middle,
Laurie. And they're free.

Pete, free is not the point.

You know I'm going to that
seminar at the paramedic convention.

Laurie, what's more
important to you?

Going to a ball game with me

or going to some dumb
lecture about your job?

Never mind, don't answer.

It's so typical, Pete.

Always putting things
on an either/or basis.

You know, I'm going
to ignore that remark,

'cause I know
you really didn't mean it.

Now, if you were a normal
everyday-girl type girl, you'd...

[ALARM SOUNDING]

MALE DISPATCHER ON PA:
Still alarm, Rescue 2.

A rescue with injuries
aboard the schooner Balclutha

in dock at Fisherman's Wharf.

Control KMA 526.

[SIREN WAILING]

Ambulance 87, a rescue
with the Fire Department

aboard the schooner Balclutha
at Fisherman's Wharf.

[SIREN WAILING]

[SIREN WAILING]

What happened? I don't know.

Vince went up to
free a jammed block.

Next thing I know,
he lets out a yell and sort of fell out.

Hey,
you guys better get him down fast.

Okay, Ricco, you and I'll go.

The rest of you guys
handle it from the deck.

Let's go.

Okay, guys, look.
I'll drop the tagline

and we'll set up on that side,
all right?

Okay, Cap-

Ready, Ricco? Yeah, let's go.

[SIREN WAILING]

What have we got?
PAKULA: Just what you see.

Captain and Paul are
gonna bring him down.

This is going to take some time.

I better get the drug
box and telemetry.

Okay.

Has he moved at all?

Not since we've been here.

Give me your hand.

Thanks, Cap.

Watch your footing here.

Oh, this is gonna
be a rough one.

Hanging there
won't get the job done.

Let's get the belt on him first.

Pakula, here comes the lifeline.

Pick up the slack.

Let me down a little bit.

Easy! Easy!

Hold it! Hold it!

All right,
I'm cutting the halyard.

Stand clear below.

Okay, I'm ready to come down.

Give me some more slack. Easy.

One of you guys come over here

and grab this line
and let him down.

You guys got it? Yeah.

Got him? Got him.

Okay. Straighten him out.

You want to get that
equipment over here?

Yeah.

Phew! Nice job, Captain.

Is he going to be all right?

Well, he's in good hands.

Thank God. I was kind of
worried there for a while.

Head injury. Shock.

Pulse is 64.

Both bones fractured
above the ankle.

LAURIE: BP is 80 over 30.

Harbor Emergency.

Harbor Emergency,
this is Unit 87, Paramedic 187.

Go ahead, 87. This is Dr. DeRoy.

We have a trauma victim.

Male, approximately

He fell 10 feet and his leg
jammed into a ship's block.

He's suffering from a fractured
leg and definite head injuries.

Back seems okay.

Victim appears shocky.

We will be taking neck
precautions and applying splint.

Request an IV with Ringer's.

Go ahead with IV of Ringer's
and transport.

Harbor. IV with Ringer's and transport.

Our ETA
approximately 10 minutes.

Hey, say, Captain,
did you have to cut that load line?

I mean, it's going to be a lot
of bread to replace that gear.

I'm sorry. It was
either that or his leg.

And legs are a little harder
to come by nowadays, you know.

Yeah, I guess.

Incidentally, why didn't you guys
try and get him down yourselves?

[LAUGHS] What, are you kidding?

I mean, we don't get paid
for that sort of stuff, you do.

Besides, with workman's comp
and insurance and all that,

I mean, who wants to get sued
messing around with a rescue?

You know what I mean?

PETE: I know exactly
what you mean.

That was good work.

Thanks, Doc.

Say, Laurie,
can I speak with you alone?

I think I'll get some
supplies or something.

Good. Mmm,
good old reliable Joe.

[CHUCKLES]

What's up, Doc?

Well, I'm going to be
delivering a fascinating lecture

at the convention tomorrow,

and I just wanted
you to be there.

Mmm, I'm planning on it.

Great, great.

I guess I can ask you
out for dinner afterwards

and you can tell me
how great I am?

[CHUCKLES] Are you still trying
to take advantage of me, Doctor?

Absolutely. Good.

Then let's skip
the second lecture.

What second lecture?

The one you're going to
give me at dinner about Pete.

[GROANS] Oh.

It'll only frustrate you.

You mean about your relationship
with that Neanderthal fireman?

That's not exactly the
description I would give,

but that's the way it goes.

You know, I don't understand...

You don't have to. You don't
have to. You don't have to.

I'll see you later.

Hmm? Laurie!!

If you change your mind,
let me know.

Doctor, I admire your persistence,
not your perception.

After lunch, I'll be
delivering a lecture

on the PAT Syndrome.

I think you'll find it very
interesting from your point of view.

It's a new simple technique.
No complex equipment.

I don't know. [SIGHS]

Don't know what?

I don't know. It seems to
me I've heard all this before.

You mean you slept through all this before,
too.

I like it. They're making
some new advancements

on some old techniques,
and I'm glad we came.

Yeah? What kind of advancements
can you make on an IV?

Either you get a vein
or you don't.

The only major new
advancement I know of

would be if people had
built-in spigots.

It'd be great for vampires.

[SCOFFS] Very funny.

Thank you.

Well, if you didn't
come here to learn,

what did you come here for?

Sure would like to
get a cup of coffee.

Gail!

Gail, how are you doing?

Hey, how are you? Fine.

Good to see you.
Yeah, nice to see you.

Sit down. Have
some lunch with us.

Oh, no,
thanks. I'll just have some coffee.

Good luck.

ROY: How's Pete
and Laurie doing?

Oh, they're fine. They're still together,
and still fighting.

Well,
at least the relationship isn't boring.

Yeah, that's true.

Hey, how come you guys didn't
call when you got into town?

We just got in this morning.

And Mr. Gung Ho here wanted to get
started on the convention right away.

Look, I think the convention is
going to be kind of interesting.

He's a little weird.

Well, you don't know what weird
is until you've heard my husband

try to explain his latest
laser beam theory to me.

Well, that's what you get
when you marry a professor.

You have to listen.

Look, if you wanna goof off,

why don't you go ahead?
No one's stopping you.

[MAN CHOKING]

What's wrong, Tim?

Put... Put your arms
over your head.

Put 'em up over your head.

Go ahead.

Okay, folks,
you wanna move back here, please?

Here we go.

Are you okay? Are you okay?

Nothing, nothing,
nothing. Uh-uh. Did it help?

Nothing. Okay.

Nothing. [COUGHS]

There it is. Okay, okay. Oh.

Come here, sit down.
I'll go get an ambulance.

Okay, yeah, yeah. Just relax,
I'm a paramedic.

Come on, sit down.
How do you feel now?

It's k*lling me. It's my chest.

Okay, you just breathe slowly.

We're gonna give you
some air here. It's k*lling me.

We're gonna give you
some air. [GASPING]

You Okay? Hey.

No, he's arrested.

All right, here.
Lay down. Hang on.

[CROWD EXCLAIMS]

You got it? Yeah, I got it.

[GRUNTS]

No.

One, two, three, four, five.

One, two...

MALE DISPATCHER ON RADIO:
Ambulance 87,

a choking victim at 137
Harbor Street in the coffee shop.

Repeat,

One, two, three, four, five.

One, two... No. Nothing.

Three, four...

[SIREN WAILING]

He's in arrest.
We've been giving him CPR.

Harbor, this is Ambulance 87.
Paramedic Number 138.

This is Harbor. Dr. DeRoy. Go ahead,
Paramedic 138.

Harbor, we have a male patient,
unconscious.

He choked on a piece of meat,

which was dislodged using
the Heimlich technique,

then went into cardiac arrest,
ventricular fibrillation.

He was defibrillated times one

and is now
in normal sinus rhythm.

His vitals are...

BP 100 over 80.

Pulse is 90, respiration's a 20.

BP 100 over 80,
pulse 90, respiration 20.

Patient is regaining
consciousness and color looks good.

Did you receive
EKG transmission?

Unit 87, Paramedic 138,
affirmative on EKG.

Start IV of D5W TKO
and transport immediately.

Continue EKG en route.

And notify any changes
in the scope pattern.

What is your ETA?

ETA approximately
eight to ten minutes.

Okay, we can take it from here.

Listen, do you need any help?

I mean, I can go
in the ambulance with you.

Sure. We can always
use some free help.

Yeah. Great.

You'll do anything to get out of a lecture,
won't you?

Hey, no, if we don't hurry,
we're going to miss the first lecture.

All right.

[HONKING]

[SIREN WAILING]

What... What happened?

LAURIE: It's okay.
Everything is going to be fine.

We'll be at the hospital soon.

I just had a terrible thought.

Eager Ellen?

Yeah. Eager Ellen.

The nice young lady you set me
up with the last time I was up here.

[CHUCKLES] Sorry.

Wanted a June wedding.

Any June. Any groom.

[LAUGHS] Any groom.

You got lucky, huh?

I suppose you can use that word.

Well, don't worry, Johnny.
It's her day off.

So, you can roam the
hospital with an easy mind.

Okay, if you say so.

What were you going to do if I
told you she was there? Jump out?

It is a thought.

[HORN HONKING]
[TIRES SCREECHING]

Boy, doesn't anybody in San
Francisco stop for you guys?

[CHUCKLES]

DAVISON: I've had
enough of you, Marvin!

I've told you again and again
to keep that stupid music down,

but no, you won't listen.

It's enough.
I want you out of here.

I want you out of here
tomorrow. That's final.

Wait... Wait a minute.
Wait a minute.

I've been living here four
years and I'm not moving.

All my other tenants say you're moving,
I say you're moving, period!

Mr. Davison, why is everybody
against me? I don't bother anybody.

[SCOFFS]

What am I going to do?
Where am I going to go?

I don't know and I
don't care. Just go!

Or I'll have the cops
throw you out.

[DOOR SLAMS CLOSE]

Hi.

Oh! How's he doing?

Very good. He's really lucky.

I guess if you're going
to have a heart att*ck,

a paramedic convention's
the best place.

Oh, really? Where's Joe?

Yeah, he's going to take some
supplies into the ambulance.

Want to have some coffee?

No, I'm kind of waiting around to
meet this little therapist in there.

Well, we better go some place

because I saw Ellen
down the corridor.

You saw who? Ellen.

Ellen? You said she
wasn't going to be here.

What... What she doing here?

I know. I don't know
what she's doing here.

I guess her radar's
at work again.

Well, let's go.

Come on.

Oh, Johnny! Oh!

You're back so soon.
Yeah, I had to.

Listen, they're waiting for
you out in the ambulance.

Oh, okay.

Oh,
I wanted to tell you. I told Roy.

Gordon and I are having a
barbeque tomorrow. Can you make it?

Try to. If Roy can make it,
I can make it.

Okay, I'll see you. Good.

See you tomorrow.

Where are you going?

I was a little tired. I just
wanted to get some fresh air.

Bored?

Yeah.

You got bored. Yeah.

What are you doing?

Eager Ellen.

Lucky you.

Really. Listen.

You're bored, I'm running.

Let's go to Rescue 2 and
ride out with Pete and the guys.

All right, that's a good idea.

It's the best idea
I've heard all day.

Anyway, I'm all excited
about the barbeque tomorrow.

You know, it's going to be
the biggest party I've ever had.

Need any friendly help
from a helpful friend?

Well, if you could come
about an hour earlier.

Oh, say no more, I'll be there.

Okay.

Hey, Tom just called in sick.
He's got the flu.

Oh, great. Well,
who's covering for him?

Not me. I got
a heavy date tonight.

Well, I can take another shift.

That could be kind of fun.
We've never worked a rig together.

Okay.

Two girls on the same rig?

I don't know whether the Watch
Commander would buy that.

Joe, how would you like a thick
lip to go with your thick head?

[CHUCKLES] No offense.

Why don't you get changed and
I'll handle the Watch Commander?

Okay, Right?

Thick lip?

Well, did I handle
the Watch Commander?

You certainly did.

MALE DISPATCHER ON RADIO: Ambulance 87,
an inmate in labor.

Women's Section City Jail.

Respond. Code 2.

Our first customers.
Who's driving?

Why you? Me.

Why not?

DAVISON: Look, Marvin,
be reasonable. We can talk about it.

MARVIN: Not now, it's too late.

I'll talk to the other tenants.

We'll work something out!
You'll call the cops!

No, no, I'll go up... No!

[g*nsh*t]

[BODY THUDS]

Everything's fine.

How are you doing back there?

Everything's cool. The
baby's not too impatient.

Right, Melinda?

Gee, I wouldn't know.

I mean, I've never
done this before.

Do you think it'll
really be all right?

Everything's fine.
All systems go and normal.

Whatever that means.

[LAUGHS]

It means people have been
doing this for years.

I guess you're right.

I mean,
otherwise none of us would be here, right?

Right.

Listen, you think...

MALE DISPATCHER ON RADIO:
Ambulance 87,

a sh**ting at 1014 North
Hudson. Can you handle?

What do you think, Laurie?
Can we take it?

It's only a few blocks away.

I don't know...
How about it, Melinda?

Be my guest.

Okay. Tell 'em
we're rolling on it.

Unit 87 responding on
sh**ting at 1014 North Hudson.

MALE DISPATCHER: 10-4, 87.

[SIREN WAILING]

You know, this is
really exciting.

Don't get too hyped.

We're gonna have to put you on the
back burner for a little while. Okay?

Okay,
relax. This shouldn't take too long.

I won't be going anywhere.

Hi, Frank. What's happening?

Hi. We got a sh**ting victim
in the manager's apartment.

Right off the lobby.
You can't miss it.

Okay, we'll take a look.

Frank, we have
a pregnant prisoner

from the county jail
in the back of our rig.

Nothing serious,
just a misdemeanor rap,

but do you mind
keeping an eye on her?

How is he?

OFFICER: Not too good
from all I can tell.

Looks like he's lost
a lot of blood.

You better get the hospital.

He's going to need
a lot of help.

DAVISON: [GASPING]
Apartment 302.

What are you saying? Louder.

Apartment 302.

He did it. He's crazy.

He's crazy.

Check it out.

Harbor Emergency,
this is Unit 87. Stand by, please.

Police officers. Open up.

[KNOCKING]

Police officers.
Open up in there.

[f*ring]

Let's go back
and get some cover.

Officers need help.

We have a barricaded suspect
wanted in connection with a sh**ting.

I repeat, officers need help.

LAURIE: Harbor Emergency,
this is Unit 87, Paramedic 187.

We've established an IV,

multiple PVCs and BP 90 over 50.

Unit 87, Paramedic 187.

A bolus of 75 milligrams
of lidocaine and transport.

A bolus of 75 milligrams
of lidocaine and transport.

I guess you found the suspect?

We sure did. We got
ourselves a real nut up there

and he's trigger-happy.

We've called for a full sh*t.

We're gonna have to
evacuate this whole building.

We're gonna have to get
you out of here. How is he?

Not good.

Can we move him? If we have to.

We have to.

I'll go get some help so we
can get out of here fast, all right?

How's his BP?

It's not good. You better
call the hospital again.

Okay.

Any unit in the vicinity,

respond to a barricaded
suspect at 1014 North Hudson.

ON RADIO: Approach with caution.

There is a paramedic unit and
one sh**ting victim in the building.

Repeat, 1014 North Hudson.

Fire Department, this is
the Police Department.

We have a barricaded suspect
in a hotel at 1014 North Hudson.

We're going to have to
evacuate the building

and we may have to use tear gas.

Request assistance at the scene.

MALE DISPATCHER: Still alarm,
Engine 38, Engine 13, Rescue 2.

Respond with

at 1014 North Hudson.

Repeat, 1-0-1-4 North Hudson.

Control KMA 526.

You guys wanna come? Yeah.

[SIRENS WAILING]

[SIRENS WAILING]

[INDISTINCT CHATTERING]

Where do you want us?
I don't know.

I'm not sure what we've
got yet. Just stand by.

The suspect hasn't made a move

since the officers tried
to enter the apartment.

Why don't we go help?

No, standard procedure.
We wait here.

I don't want anyone
else around the front

till we get
a better picture, okay?

Where are the paramedics?

Well, they're inside with the
manager. He's the only victim so far.

Except for them,
we've got the entire building evacuated.

They should be out any minute.

Hey, hon... Hon,
take it easy. [LABORED BREATHING]

Hey, hon,
are you okay? Take it easy.

You better go get some help.

All right. Now,
take it easy. You'll be okay, now.

Yes. I'll be right back.

[GROANING]

Lieutenant,
there's an OB case in progress

inside the ambulance
around the corner, sir.

An OB case? Yes, sir.

A lady is having a baby?

Yes, sir.

Oh, that's marvelous.

Look, we're paramedics
from LA. Maybe we can help.

Yeah, please. Go ahead.

[GROANING]

Hi. How you doing?

Not so hot.

The girls said they'd be right back,
but they...

All right, all right,
all right. Take it easy.

You're gonna be okay. We're
paramedics. We'll take care of you.

Better get on the phone
and get some help.

We can handle it.

Well, we're a little bit
out of our district.

[GROANING]

All right. I'll call for an extra
ambulance while I'm at it.

I'll get an OB kit ready,
just in case.

JOHNNY: Dispatch,
this is Ambulance 87.

We request an assistance
at our location. An OB case.

available at this time.

[SIRENS WAILING]

Stay back, stay back!

[g*nf*re]

Stay here.

[GROANING]

You wanna try to move her?

There's no way we can move her.

Yeah. All right, take it easy.

You're okay. You're okay.

You're fine. You're
okay. You're okay.

[g*nf*re CONTINUES]

Officer in the lobby,
do you read me?

This is CP 1. Officer in the lobby,
do you read me?

OFFICER: CP 1. We're
pinned down inside the lobby.

One officer's wounded.

Hey, we got real trouble.
We're gonna have to use gas.

Look, Lieutenant,
even if you could get a man inside,

those canisters are liable
to touch this dump off,

and the paramedics
are still inside.

Well, we can't get them out.
The door is right in his line of fire.

Any ideas?

Hang in a minute.

[INAUDIBLE]

This is CP 1.
Stand by to use gas.

Harbor Emergency, this is Unit 87,
Paramedic Number 187.

BP is coming up slightly,
but patient is still shocky.

Unit 87, Paramedic 187,

start another line of 1,000 ccs of
normal saline at 200 ccs per hour.

And what is your ETA?

Harbor, we have no ETA
at the moment.

We are trapped in the
building by a sn*per.

Stand by for vitals
on second victim.

[g*nf*re]

We may not be able to move her,

but I'm gonna move
this ambulance.

[g*nf*re CONTINUES]

[INDISTINCT CHATTERING
ON POLICE RADIO]

Okay, look,
we can pin him down with our monitor

if we can get set up
across the street.

Yeah, but you got to pull right
into his line of fire to do that.

I can't allow that.

Well, can you give us
some sort of diversion?

Diversion?

Yeah, yeah. I think so. Hold on.

Third floor, this is CP 1.

Go ahead, CP 1.

Yeah, what's your situation
up there now?

Very quiet at the moment.

Okay. Can you give me some fire
through the door on my command?

All right. Stand by to fire.

Now, when they put some rounds
through that door,

it should
take his mind off the street

long enough for you
to get in position.

You got it.

[INAUDIBLE]

Okay, we're ready.

Okay, third floor.
Start f*ring, now.

[GLASS SHATTERING]

[GRUNTING]

[EXCLAIMS]

Okay, guys, M's go-

[EXCLAIMS]

You Okay?

Oh, we're doing fine,
but these two are in bad shape.

Freeze!

Okay. Let's get 'em
out of here. Come on.

Grenades!
That guy is really nuts.

Yeah, what do we do?

Well, there's nobody left to get
hurt except himself and us. Let's go.

Right.

That was no grenade.

You're right. Sounds like he blew
a gas line. Let's get out of here.

Control 2, Rescue 2, give us a full
first-alarm assignment at this location.

[INDISTINCT CHATTERING]

Here they come.

[BABY CRYING]

LAURIE: Gail, Gail!
We forgot Melinda.

Your friendly visiting firemen
took care of everything.

Look, it's a boy.

Nice job.

Hey, what happened out there?

They had a real psycho
up on the third floor.

What was the problem?

I don't know, Roy. But whatever it was,
it's sure solved now.

[PEOPLE WHOOPING ON TV]

[g*nshots ON TV]

MALE ANNOUNCER:
A special news item.

Our on-the-scene news crew
has just delivered this exclusive film

of a sh**ting
in downtown San Francisco.

Phooey! It was
just getting good.

Shut up and watch.

Here are some scenes
of a major sh**t

between the police
and the suspect,

who barricaded himself
in the building.

The manager and a police officer
were sh*t and treated by paramedics.

The suspect apparently k*lled himself with
a grenade, setting the building on fire.

We can see now the victims
being removed from the building

by two very daring
female paramedics.

PHILLIP: Hey, look! There's
Pete and Laurie. And there's Mom!

Hey, Dad! Look, it's Mom!

JULIE: Daddy, look!

It is your mother, isn't it?

We have been informed
that the manager of the hotel

has been taken
to Harbor Hospital

and his condition
is listed as serious,

but is expected to live.

The police officer is listed in
satisfactory condition at Harbor Hospital.

The fire in the hotel was brought
under control about 10 minutes ago.

We now return to our
regularly scheduled program.

[PHONE RINGING]

Daddy, the phone.

Oh, turn the set
down a little bit.

Yes? Oh, hi, honey, it's me.

I just wanted to let you know
that I was okay.

I thought you might have heard
what happened this afternoon.

I didn't want you to worry.

Well, I guess
something did happen

because they just had it
on TV just now.

I just saw you and Laurie.

You both looked lovely.
Was it interesting?

Yes, Gordon.
It was very interesting.

Uh... I'm not
interrupting you, am I?

Oh, no, no. I'm just in the
middle of Johnson's dissertation.

It's really fascinating. I want you
to read it when you get a chance.

Maybe tomorrow.

Sure, whenever.

Listen, I've got to
get back to work now,

so give the kids a hug for me

and I'll see you all
for breakfast.

Okay, sweetheart. Have fun.

You mother says
she's having a good time

and she'll see you
in the morning.

You know, my husband
is really incredible.

What is it now?

Well, he saw the news on TV

and he wasn't even
sure what happened.

But he said we both looked
lovely and he told me to have fun.

Would you prefer he'd be
like Pete and worry all the time?

No, not really. But there's got to
be a middle ground somewhere.

You know, he's so out to lunch,

that sometimes
it's kind of irritating.

Mmm-hmm.

What's really annoying is
that I don't even know why.

Well, you got to look
on the bright side of things.

At least he recognized you
this time.

Yeah. You got a point there.

[sums]

I'm b*at.

Well, better get un-b*at.

'Cause we're in San Francisco,
night-life town.

What do you want to do?

Nothing.

Nothing? Nothing.

There's a movie
on the paid television

I've been waiting a year to see.

I'm just gonna sit back, enjoy myself,
order some room service,

get some great dinner
and just watch the movie.

Hello? Room Service? Roy.

I'd like a large glass
of milk and a BLT.

Hold the...
Roy! What are you doing?

[HANGS UP PHONE]
What are you doing?

Roy, we're in San Francisco!

You don't come to San Francisco,

check into a hotel
and watch a movie!

You'd have to
tie me to this chair

to get me to do
something that dumb!

I'm not gonna
tie you to a chair.

Very funny.

If you're feeling restless,
why don't you give Eager Ellen a call?

She'd be only too glad
to hear from you.

We're a regular laugh riot,
aren't we?

What is the matter with you?

There's nothing
the matter with me.

Why don't you do
whatever you're gonna do?

I'm gonna sit here and watch television,
all right?

Okay, fine.
I'll just go out by myself.

Fine.

[STAMMERING] I don't
believe you. You're really gonna...

Yes, he's gonna do it.

You're crazy'

Yes, hello? Room Service?

I'd like a large glass
of milk and a BLT.

[WOMAN SPEAKING POLISH ON TV]

Hey, hey. Roy.

[MAN SPEAKING IMPATIENTLY
IN POLISH ON TV]

I don't understand what...

What kind of movie is this?

Hmm?

What kind of movie is this?

Polish.

It's a classic.

It's a Polish classic?

I don't believe it.

[WOMAN SPEAKING POLISH]

Coming.

Morning.

Hi.

Mmm.

How're you doing?

Sleepy, but I'll survive.

Oh, good.

Want some breakfast?

Nah, just some coffee.

Are you sure?

Yeah, besides,
you're probably exhausted

from your big
adventure yesterday.

[CHUCKLES] Very funny.

[sums]

[SCOFFS]

So, how does it feel
to be a heroine?

Hmm?

Did you see this?

No.

Pretty nice, huh?

Yeah. Depends on
your point of view, I guess.

Taking a wild guess,

I'd say that you're angry that it says,
"women paramedics." Right?

[CLICKING TONGUE]

[sum-nus] That's right.

But let's not talk about it right now,
okay?

Oh, remember, I have to be at
Gail and Gordon's an hour early.

You want to come along or
should I drive over by myself?

How come an hour early?

To help Gail out.

Which basically means
keeping Gordon out of her way.

Okay. I guess
I can volunteer for that.

Always glad to
do you a favor, honey.

Mmm-hmm. I can see that.

But actually, I thought
I was doing you a favor.

What do you mean?

Giving you
an extra hour of my time.

Ouch!

Got you, didn't I?

Don't you always?
Mmm, I hope so.

Where're you going?

To make myself the
breakfast you didn't want.

[sum-nus]

How much longer
are you two gonna be?

We've told you before,
you can't rush a project like this.

It's too delicate.

What's delicate is the
materials you're working with.

That stuff is dangerous.

Not the way we're storing it.
We've taken every precaution.

No, I still think this project should
be moved to our Montana facility.

It'd be a whole lot safer.

Not until we finish
our basic research.

Look, nothing can possibly
go wrong. It's under control.

In this kind of work,
everything's under control

until something happens
that isn't in the game plan.

Now, look, this whole facility should
have been closed down years ago.

It's a disaster
just waiting to happen.

Like what?

That what, John, is something
I'm not at all anxious to find out.

I just don't believe we sat...

We sat up all night and
watched a Polish art film.

Look, nobody told you to.

I'm starved. I only had half a
sandwich last night, you know.

Oh, don't get petty on me now.

Boy, you're amazing.

You know, sometimes
I really don't understand you.

Who else would come
to San Francisco

and [SIGHING]
watch a film in a room?

You.

Well, that's different.
I got hooked.

You know,
I didn't understand a word of that film.

Not one word. I didn't
know what was going on.

Really? [LAUGHS] No, I didn't.

Hmm.

Well, if you understand anything about
sex at all, you'd understand that movie.

What?

Sex?

You mean that...

You mean that...
That was a dirty movie?

So,
that's what they were doing behind the car!

I thought it was
changing a tire!

Okay, you guys, now eat fast.

We have exactly one-half hour,

and then we have to start
getting ready for the barbecue.

Okay.

Not that fast.

I'll help you, Mom.

I know you will, honey.

You know,
this is a really good picture of you.

You got to send it
to your mother.

I will.

Gordon, have you heard
anything I've just said?

Certainly.

You said you were going to
send this picture to your mother.

Oh, Gordon.

In exactly four hours, we're going to
have 30 people here for a barbeque.

Thirty people, huh?

At three quarters
a pound each, that's...

Twenty-two and a half pounds of hamburger
you'll need, if they each eat only one.

Personally, I'd multiply it
by a factor of 2.3.

Hot dogs! Suppose some
of them want hot dogs?

Then I'd reduce the factor.

Will you guys cut it out?

I need some cooperation
around here!

All right, sweetheart. The
hamburgers are my responsibility.

I've been told I make
a terrific hamburger.

Oh, Gordon, you do make
terrific hamburgers.

God knows how, but you do.

As a matter of fact,
you're almost famous for them.

You see,
it's not the hamburgers I'm worried about.

What, then?

It's the barbeque.

You never seem to remember that
the fluid goes first, then the match.

You're right.

The logic is indisputable
when you stop to think about it.

Don't worry, Mom, I'll help.

Yeah, don't worry, Gail,
Phillip helped last time.

He really digs combustion.

How're you doing up there?

It's a good thing I'm
not afraid of heights.

[CHUCKLES] Isn't it?

What I don't understand is
why we have to do this today.

I mean, we have to
leave in an hour.

Just keep painting.

You've been promising to
help me for over a month

and I decided enough was enough.

I don't know what the hurry is.

I don't like living grubby.

What's grubby about this place?

Well, nothing,
compared to yours.

But I'm a sensitive person,

[LAUGHS] except about
the men in my life.

Men? What's with the plural?

Ha, ha, ha! [CHUCKLES] Suffer.

[MOCK LAUGHS]

I don't think I'll ever
understand you, Laurie.

Well, that's good.

There's got to be some
mystery left in our relationship.

Hmm.

You're not missing any spots
up there, are you?

Oh, great. A perfectionist.

Well, listen, I said
I'd do this myself.

You're the one that wanted to help,
weren't you?

Yes, yes, yes!

Well, quit griping and paint.

Demanding little brat,
aren't you?

Yes, I am, I guess.

All righty, I've finished.

Can I give you a hand?

No, I'm doing just fine.
Mmm-hmm.

I should be through just about the
time you finish washing your hair.

I washed my hair.

Yeah, but that's before
I dropped paint on it.

You didn't.

You did!

Check out this thing.

Okay, clothes check.

Let's go around
through the patio.

Okay.

Hi, Gail! Hiya!

GAIL: Hi!

The rescue team has arrived.

Yeah. Hi, everybody.

Just in time.

A trained firefighter could
be needed at any moment.

I guess that means I'd better get outside,
huh?

Very perceptive of you. Mmm-hmm.

See you later. Okay.

How's it going?

[LAUGHING] Oh, great. I just
have to finish the appetizers,

get the tables set up,
set up the bar, take a shower,

do my hair, get dressed.

[SIGHING] That
sounds exhausting.

Listen,
why don't I take the shower for you?

Oh, that's a big help.
Thank you.

No, I'm kidding. Go,
go, go. Take a shower.

Yeah? Okay. I can do this.

You know, Gloria, J.P. really
seemed worried about the project.

He gets paid to worry, John.

So he has to justify his job.

I know, but maybe...

No maybes about it.

We know exactly
what we're doing.

And if we know,
then there's no problem.

Whose side are you on anyway?

The project's, of course.

Then stop worrying like Wallace

and let's get back to work.

Okay.

It's just that he does have a better
overall view of what's going on around here.

And we hardly have a clue of
what anybody else is working on.

All that's important
is their competence.

Do you care what
they're experimenting with?

No, I...
I just wonder why J.P. does.

Don't drop it.

Not a chance.

I can't wait until we
ship that stuff out of here.

[sum-nus] Me too.

Just a couple more days and
you'll stop your complaining.

I can't help it if this stuff
gives me the creeps.

Cheer up. Think of all the other
stuff that may be around here

that we don't know
anything about.

No, thanks.

I'll settle for worrying
what I know about any day.

Good. Then stop your
complaining and let's go get lunch.

All right. As soon as I scrub.

[INDISTINCT CHATTERING]

DeROY: Well, you see, Doctor,
in family practice, like yours,

you can't possibly be objective.

You just know
the patients too well.

But in emergency medicine,

well,
we don't have time to personalize.

You mean treat the
illness not the patient.

Right. Right.

Anyone for some food?

No, but I could think of
something else I'd rather have.

Oh, well, we take
what we can get.

You having fun?

Oh, yes. If talking shop
can be classified as fun.

Dr. DeRoy explaining his
theory of treating the illness

rather than the patient.

Isn't that fascinating?

Well,
wouldn't think of
interrupting or even listening.

Hey!

Hmm.

Well, as I was saying...

You want to take over?
I'm tired.

Thank you.

[LAUGHING] Hi.

How's it going?

No one asked
for their money back.

Has Joe done
his number on you yet?

No, and I'm starting
to get worried.

Don't worry.
These things take time.

You know, there's
a precedent involved.

A little coaxing. Yeah.

Here he comes now. With guitar.

Smile.

Hi, Joe.

Hi, Joe.

Hi.

Having fun?

Yeah, I guess.

Um... You guys need
any help or anything?

Nope. No.
Everything's under control.

How about some entertainment?
You got anything going?

Oh, darn!

I knew I forgot something.

[CLICKING TONGUE] Laurie,
what am I going to do?

I don't know.

Well, I could
maybe sing, if you like.

Oh, no, Joe,
I couldn't ask you to do that.

You're here to have a good time!

Eat your hamburger.

I'm not hungry.
don't mind.

Well, if you're sure...

Gail, you can't impose
on a guest like that.

Yes, she can! I don't mind.

No. No, Laurie's right. I
can't ask you to do that, Joe.

Look, I'd really love
to help out. Please!

Well, if...
If you really want to.

Okay.

[STIFLED LAUGHTER]

Works every time.

[SINGING UPBEAT SONG]

[SCATTING]

GORDON: So you see,
Pete... Whoops!

You see, it makes sense to
use light water on that kind of fire.

Hey, you're right,
Gordon. How did you figure that out?

Well, actually, it's...
It's quite logical.

When you deal with the
chemical properties involved...

Of course,
the philosophy expounded by Plato,

is the basis of most of the
mysticism found in western culture.

Huh. You know,
I've always thought of mysticism

as being kind of a combination

of Eastern ascension
and Western redemption.

Huh.

What did you say
you did for a living?

A firefighter. I'm a fire...
Paramedic with the LA County.

I see.

Shall we get a bite to eat?

[CONTINUES SINGING]

[ALL CHEERING]

This first batch
is really looking good.

I think we already have
enough for the final experiments.

Well, as long as we're set up,

why don't we run another batch?

We really don't need it, but...

Oh, no! Another power outage.

I'll call the generator plant.

[PHONE RINGING]

MAN: I know. I know. We
just ran out of fuel is all.

I don't know how it happened.

I mean, maybe the night crew

forgot to check up
on the t*nk capacity.

Yeah, yeah,
relax. We'll be up on the line in an hour.

Okay. Yeah, all right.

Look, why don't you get off
the line and let me make a call?

All right.

Yeah, listen,
this is Barney over at the plant.

[SINGING UPBEAT SONG]

[SCATTING]

[CONTINUES SINGING]

I guess everyone's having a good time,
huh?

I don't know why you worry.
You're a terrific hostess.

Oh, thanks.

But I seem to spend half my
time worrying about the things

that I didn't do that I think
that I should have done.

Relax. There's plenty
of food and drink.

Joe is singing his heart out.

You gotta learn to be
your own best guest.

Thanks, Doc.

[JOE CONTINUES SINGING]

Hey, he's good.

I never heard him sing before.

I mean, he's really good. And, yeah,
you guys probably heard him before.

Everybody's enjoying him.
I mean, look, everybody...

[CLEARS THROAT]

I think I found somebody
that's not listening.

I should go straighten them out.

[EXHALING]

Oh, hi!

Hi.

[sums]

Have we met?

Well, no, actually, we haven't.

We almost did, though.
Yesterday, in the hospital.

Yeah, I was riding out with Joe.

He's the guy that's singing.

[CONTINUES SINGING]

Good friend of mine.

And Laurie.

We had a run,
so I couldn't stick around.

I'm... I'm John. Johnny Gage,
from Los Angeles.

I'm Kathy Kurland,
from San Francisco.

Hi, Kathy.

Hi, Johnny.

[CLEARS THROAT]

You're a physical
therapist, huh?

Right.

Yeah, right. Yeah.

I'm into physical therapy.

Well, I mean I'm not into
physical therapy perse.

I'm a paramedic, actually.

But I know somebody that was
into physical therapy in Los Angeles.

[GUESTS APPLAUDING]

She was more into hydrotherapy.

Oh, boy! She had this tub,
and we used to...

[JOE PLAYING SLOW MELODY]

[JOE SINGING SLOW SONG]

He sure is good, isn't he?

So, as I was saying...

Yes, Gordon, you were saying
about the light water and...

Oh, hi, honey.

Hi.

All through waitressing?
Mmm-hmm.

The gluttons ate it all.

[LAUGHS]

I think what they're ready
for is some more real food.

Can I give you a hand, Gordon?

What you can give me
is some more hamburgers.

They're in the freezer. Okay.

They keep better that way.

I'll go with you.

I don't need any...
I'll go with you.

I don't believe that Gordon.

He was teaching me all
about how to put out fires.

I think another minute
and I would've...

I wish he'd taught you
how to cook instead.

What do you mean? I can cook.

I know. You make
sensational toast.

I guess you learned it
in the field, huh?

Come here, you.

Now I know why
you wanted to help.

Good thinking, wasn't it? Yeah.

[BOTH MOANING]

Now, help me get the food.

Killjoy.

[SIGHING] I don't believe
what I'm seeing.

Oh, no. Leave it to Gordon.

Organic bowling ball.
Look at this.

I think we're going to
need a hammer, babe.

And a chisel.

[sums]

Well, as Confucius once said,

"A man who does not extend
himself does not know how to live."

Confucius said that?

Is that a literal translation?

Oh, I wouldn't know. I read
it in a Playboy magazine

while I was getting a haircut.

Okay, Jim,
thanks a lot. I can do it now.

I mean, a p*rn
Polish art film.

It really was
kind of fascinating.

I know. I saw it.

You did?

I loved it!

But it wasn't the
least bit p*rn.

Sure it was.

[STAMMERS] I mean,
it may have been a little subtle,

but sure it was.

Abstruse existentialism
always is subtle.

Oh,
yeah! Abstruse existentialism? Right.

It's so rare to find someone
who likes the same things.

Yeah, I know what you mean.

Wasn't that scene with
the devil incarnate terrific?

Yeah.

Especially where
there's a conflict...

Would you like a hamburger?

Yeah, okay.

Great, well, let's go
and get a hamburger.

Have you had one
of their hamburgers?

Nope, not yet.

You haven't? Oh, boy,
you're in for a treat.

Oh, boy.

Hey, short stuff.

Hi!

Hey! How you doing? I'm okay.

I see you two finally met.

You should have
introduced us before,

we really have a lot in common.

Really?

Oh! That's all right.

[INDISTINCT CHATTERING]

Well, enjoy yourselves
while you can.

Johnny, don't look now.

Huh?

Love the outfit. Mmm-hmm.

Oh, boy. [CLEARING THROAT]

Listen, you don't suppose she'd
recognize me over here, do you?

[LAUGHS] You kidding?
With her radar?

Is something wrong?

Oh, no, no.

Johnny!

Oh, Johnny!

[GASPING] What
a wonderful surprise!

Yeah.

I didn't know you were in
town. You could've called me.

Oh! Yeah,
I'm... I'm here. [LAUGHS NERVOUSLY]

I am so glad to see you,
I just can't tell you!

Oh, boy.

I know,
it's a surprise for me, too.

I'm going to give you one.

I think I need one.

Hey, what are you doing tonight?

JOHNNY: [STAMMERING]
Well, I've...

Fantastic! You know that little
restaurant we went to, the romantic one?

I would love to go there again.

[STAMMERING] Listen, Ellen,
you see... I'm a little tied up.

Not with me.

Everything's perfect.
Shall we go soon?

[sum-nus] Yeah, I...

I just love that place.

[LAUGHS NERVOUSLY]

Hey!

You remember Roy, don't you?

Sure. Yeah. He's my partner.

You... Oh, you already have one.

You have a drink.
Let me get rid of this.

It is so good to see you.

You know how long it's been?

[PHONE RINGING]

That's the 15th call
since we shut down.

Go on in and tell 'em
we're waiting for the fuel

just like they are, will you?

It's about time.

Yeah, generator plant.

Oh, yes, Mr. Wallace. Yes, sir.

Okay, straight back.

Go ahead.

It's about time.

I got a plant full of mad
scientists going bananas on me.

Hey, listen,
don't give me a hard time, okay?

I got here as quick as I could.

You don't drive this rig
like a sports car.

After all, this cargo is kind of dangerous,
you know.

Yeah, tell me about it.
Come on, let's go.

Oh, okay.

What did you do,
stop off and go to lunch somewhere?

[SARCASTICALLY] Yeah, yeah.
That's what we did.

Come on, give it a good pull.

All right. Hold it.

All right, all set.
You got it? Okay.

[GRUNTS]

[GAS HISSING]

[YAWNING]

Nice day, huh? Yeah.

Yes, sir.

Yes, Mr. Wallace.

Yeah, the truck's
here right now.

Yeah, we should be operating
in about 15 minutes.

Yes, sir.

Hey! The cigarette.

We're transferring fuel.
What's wrong with you?

What's wrong with you?

You know better than that.

Fire! Fire!

BARNEY: Let's grab
the hose, quick!

[expl*si*n]

[ALARM SOUNDING]

All right, we're going
to evacuate this area.

Now, get all of your important
papers and move! Let's go!

Jim, come on!

Engine 4, Engine 2, Truck 4,
Ambulance 64, Chief 3.

ON PA: Box alarm at Poly Tech Chemical,

Map page 3-1.

Repeat, Poly Tech Chemical,

Map page 3-1.

Control 35.

[SIRENS WAILING]

[HORNS BLARING]

[FIRE ROARING]

We've got to get out.
If this place goes...

And if it doesn't

and they find out what we've
been experimenting with?

They'll find out anyway.

Oh, maybe so,
but I'm not going to give them any help.

Could you get those
other containers and hurry?

[SIRENS WAILING]

Where are we going
to move it to?

Some place cool.

If this stuff ever overheats...

SECURITY OFFICER: Put it down.

What do you guys
think you're doing?

Moving this stuff out of here.

No way. Everything in this
lab is classified material.

And it stays right where it is.

Listen, you moron,
this stuff is heat-sensitive.

You know what'
happen
if this place starts to go?

I don't know and I don't care.

I'm a security man,
not a scientist.

And my orders are
it stays right here.

You in charge here? Near enough.

What happened?

They were refueling
up at the power plant.

Something went wrong,
there was one hell of a blast.

Loose sparks and debris
all over the place.

All right, I'll go on up and see what
we've got. You better come with me.

Listen, you better
concentrate down here.

There's probably nothing
left up there. But these labs...

Dangerous?
You better believe it.

Like how?

Toxic gases, corrosives,
some radioactive materials.

And those are just
the ones I know about.

Engine 4, Battalion 3.
Please respond to our location.

Engine 2, Battalion 3, make for
the harbor and lay down at Building 6.

Ambulance 52,
set up a triage area.

Control 35, Battalion 3.

We're gotta get
a second alarm on this one.

We've got
a fully involved structure

and an exposure problem
involving hazardous materials.

Will request Mutual Aid.

Come on, let's go.

MALE DISPATCHER ON RADIO: Engine 16,
get around to north side of Building 4.

San Rafael, Kentfield, Larkspur,
this is Marin County Communications.

Novato Fire Department requesting
a second alarm, Mutual Aid,

and move up to cover a fire
at Poly Tech Chemical.

Repeat, 3428 Ridge Drive.

You better get
that one fast, Chief.

They've been working with calcium
chlorate in there, and if it goes...

Engine 4, report to me as soon as
you're gonna knock down on that fire.

FIREFIGHTER: 10-4, Battalion 3.

CHIEF: Marin County,
Battalion 3,

we're going to need
a general alarm.

Request two paramedic
ambulances from San Francisco.

If we can't contain this one,

we can expect multiple
major casualties.

[JOE SINGING DISTANTLY]

How's it going?

Huh?

[LOUDLY] How's it going?

I feel like a sculptor.

Well, I feel like I'm hungry.
So, keep hammering.

[PHONE RINGING]

I'd better get it.
No one else will.

Hello? This is
the Warren residence.

Yes, this is Laurie Campbell.

It's Central Dispatch.

Okay, we'll be right there.

What's up?

There's a possible
disaster in Novato.

Joe, Gail and I have been
recalled for Mutual Aid Response.

I'll go with you.
Pete, you should...

Don't argue with me. You're
gonna need all the help you can get.

Okay, 0 Kay-

Excuse me, excuse me, Joe?

Gail, we've been recalled.

There's trouble
in Novato. Let's go.

Johnny, Roy, you want to go?

JOHNNY: Yeah, you bet.

Sorry, we gotta go.
JOE: Bye. Bye.

[STAMMERING] See you later.

Well, there's plenty
hamburgers, folks.

[ALL MURMURING]

[SIRENS WAILING]

This is it, Gloria.

Oh, great.

Don't worry about the formula,
I've got it with me.

Come on, let's get out of here.

[expl*si*n]

[BOTTLES SHATTERING]

[expl*si*n]

Help! Help! Over here!

Save us!

Help!

10-4. We're getting a ladder to the
second floor of Building 6, western side.

WOMAN: Help! Help! Over here!

[SCREAMING]

[CHIEF INSTRUCTING ON PA]

Chief, that building is really
dangerous. If she goes completely...

All we can do is what we're
doing. Was anyone in there?

Well, with all the commotion,

I think they got out all right.

This is no time
for thinking, mister.

I've got to know for sure or
I'll have to send a crew inside.

All right, I'll check
it out right now.

Get some more lines to
the north side of Number 3.

We've got to
isolate that structure.

[FIRE TRUCK HONKING]

Where do you want us, Chief?

Over at Building Number 5.

They've got radioactive
materials in there.

Some idiot security officer
wouldn't let them evacuate it.

What about those
buildings over there?

[CHUCKLES] Nothing
to worry about.

Just toxics and corrosives.

Oh, great. Yeah.

[ELECTRICITY CRACKLING]

Get those men
over to triage area

and get me everything
you can on the exposures.

[SIREN WAILING]

Captain Delany,
San Francisco Fire Department.

This is Gage and
DeSoto from LA County.

Welcome aboard. We can
use all the help we can get.

You got an assignment for us?

Yeah. Get on some turnout gear

and stand by to run like hell.

Now I think all of these
buildings have been searched,

but I want to be sure. Okay.

As near as I can tell,

we got two chemists
unaccounted for in Building 3.

And there could be more.

Great.

We've got two chemists
unaccounted for in Building 3.

Wanna give it a try?

That's what we get paid for.
Let's give it a sh*t, guys.

Hey, Roy! John! In here.

Guys, we've got
two of them over here.

You want to check them out?

No, let's just get
them out of here.

Well, that's our route.

ROY: This place has bars
on all the windows! Johnny!

We're going to have to
go through the walls.

All right, all right, hang on.

Here, ma'am, breathe into this.

Take a deep breath.

Take another one.

Help me with this one.

Are you hurt anywhere?

I don't think so.

But John, he's been unconscious
since the first expl*si*n.

Okay.

[BANGING]

[expl*si*n]

Give it a couple more
whacks, Johnny!

Okay, let's get out of here.

Okay,
just wait right here till I get out.

Pull him out. Pull him out.

PETE: Easy. Easy, John.

All right, good.
Okay, keep it steady.

Roy? You okay?

Yeah, we're okay. Go ahead.

I got to get my helmet.

ROY: Leave it, leave it.
Let's get out of here.

[COUGHING]

Boy, that was close!

Who said close
don't count? [SCOFFS]

CHIEF ON PA: Ladder 25, get that
monitor set up up alongside Building 6.

Engine 36, Engine 18,

start laying lines on the
perimeter of Building 5.

He looks pretty shocky.

He's got probable internal
injuries from the expl*si*n.

CHIEF ON PA: Engine 10 and Truck 6,
pull up to 20's location.

Marin County, Battalion 3,

[SIREN WAILING]

Gail?

[GASPS]

What... What are you doing here?

I heard something
about a disaster out here.

Oh! And you were
worried about me?

Not at all.

I thought you might be hungry,

what with all the
excitement and everything.

Well,
I had all that food left over anyway, so...

So, voifa!

If that's the expression.

[GASPING] My goodness!

[LAUGHS]

Aw, that's my Gordon.

Hey, everybody, chow's here.

Gordon?

There's salad, cold drinks,
plates if you need them.

Group side service here?
Why not?

[ALL CHATTERING]

Well, this really makes my day.

Oh, boy!

A cold hamburger.

Well, San Francisco is
noted for its fine cuisine, right?

So what kind of cuisine is this?

[CLEARING THROAT]

This is chopped steak,
Gordon Blue.

Gordon Blue. Wow.
I bet they like that.

Hey,
you guys! You guys want a hamburger?
