Including no advertisement for Circo Fabuloso.

Hockbar: Oh... An... An advertisement, sir?

Fabuloso: Yes! You know,

something that tells the city that we are in

that the Circo Fabuloso is putting on the greatest show

in the whole world tonight!

Hockbar: I see, I see where you are going with that.

Andy: Maybe I should wrap this gift for the Shrews' birthday

party with more than just dental floss.

Leo: But, Andy, Didn't you hear?

Carmen: Since the Shrews all have the same birthday today,

and everybody needed to wrap gifts for them,

there's no paper left at the circo.

Andy: No paper?

Leo: Nope. But still,

the Shrews will never forget the birthday they had here in...

Carmen: Oh, hi Magic Globe!

Magic Globe: Hi, everyone!

Yes, today we are in Tokyo, Japan,

a city full of life and beauty!

Magic Globe: Speaking of beauty, many Japanese people find beauty

in something you might not expect, paper!

Andy/Carmen/Leo: Paper??

Magic Globe: Japanese paper can be folded to create all sorts

of wonderful shapes:

this is a Japanese art form called Origami.

Magic Globe: Paper is also used to make kites...

and sometimes even walls called Shogi screens.

Most of the people in Japan speak Japanese,

and the way you say 'Goodbye' in Japanese is 'Sayonara'.

Hockbar: Aww, did I miss the Magic Globe?

Andy: Mr. Hockbar! How's it goin'?

We were just finding out about how wonderful Tokyo is,

y'know, where we are today.

Hockbar: Yes, yes, yes, yes...

but we need all of wonderful Tokyo to come to our

Circo show tonight.

Do you think you could make some posters for the Circo

Luna: That's Fuujin.

There are lots of stories about him here in Japan.

Some people believe he controls the wind.

Momo: Fuujin is very important to the weather

in our Japanese traditions.

Fuujin: (laughs) Uh oh!

Watch out! I'm moving again...

Luna: Anyway.

Andy, Carmen, Leo,

this is my friend, Momo.

Momo: So great to meet you all!

What brings you here?

Andy: I need to make posters for the Circo show tonight.

I need to find paper!

Luna: Well Andy, I think Momo and I can help you out

with your paper problem!

Andy: Really?

Luna: Well, Momo can.

Her family makes paper right here.

Andy: WHAAA-?

You make paper?

Momo: Hai, Andy.

Andy: Hi. I think we already met.

Luna: Not that "Hi" Andy.

Hai, means "yes" in Japanese!

Andy: Ohhh!

Momo: But it's not just any old paper made in there, Andy.

It's very special paper.

It's called Washi Paper; it's unique to Japan!

Momo: Each sheet of washi paper is hand made with great care.

Momo: We make washi by hand in an ancient way...

not like most paper that is made by a machine these days.

Andy: But it seems like this paper is almost too nice

to paint posters on.

Luna: You could make posters with Washi, Andy...

or you could make something even better!

Just look at how the light shines through this beautiful

Washi wall, or Shogi screen.

Maybe that can inspire you!

Momo, I never imagined how amazing paper could be!

There are so many things you can do with it.

Momo: Yes, but my personal most favorite use for paper

is right this way...

Momo: Kites!

Andy: Whoa... these are kites?

You made all of these with your family's paper?

Momo: Hai. Yes.

Andy: So you can make these out of the Washi paper

and they all fly!?

Like in the sky where everyone can see them?!

Momo: Hai.

Andy: And we can make one right now?!

Momo: Hmmm... hai.

Andy: I've got an idea!

I think I know how to tell the people of Tokyo

that the Circo is in town!

Andy: All we need are materials to make a kite and some paint.

Quick, let's get to the park!

Momo: That's right, then paste this one down there

and we're just about finished.

Carmen: Who knew kite-making the Japanese way was so fun!

Andy: If you've finished your kite-making,

it's time for kite painting!

Andy: See Circo Fabuloso tonight.

Carmen: Andy! Now I see what the plan is...

you're going to use this kite as one big poster

for everyone to see!

What a fantastic idea!

Leo: Yeah! With this flying in the air,

we're sure to draw a crowd to the Circo tonight!

Momo: Well, what are we waiting for?

Let's go fly a kite.

Momo: I'm not sure there's enough wind...

Carmen: Yeah...

Andy: This has gotta work!

Momo: Sorry, Andy.

A kite just can't fly without a breeze.

Momo: I've never seen Fuujin take so much time off...

where is he? Where is the wind?

Andy: Hey, wait!

Luna, aren't you friends with Fuujin, that wind guy?

Can't you ask him to get the wind going again?

Luna: I don't know...

I borrowed his rice cooker a few months ago

and I haven't returned it yet...

Andy: Please, Luna?

Fuujin: I must create the perfect bubble.

Luna: Heeeeeey, Fuujin...

Fuujin: Very.

Luna: Listen, I know I haven't returned your rice cooker yet,

but could we get some wind for our kite?

Fuujin: Wind?!

Luna: Just a bit... for my friend's kite here.

I promise to return your rice cooker,

plus do you another favor.

Fuujin: Hmmm... another favor?

Actually, I have been meaning to ask you for something...

Luna: Oh, sure.

You name it.

Luna: Whoa-whoa-whoa whoa-whoa-whoa..!

Andy: The wind is blowing!

Leo: The kite is flying!

Luna: Whoa-whoa-whoa... Carmen: And so is Luna!

Luna: (screams) AAAHHHHHH!

Kid: Look! It's Luna!

Parent: Hey wait a second was that a Circo Fabuloso kite

dragging her down the street?

Let's check it out!

Crowd: Wait for us!

Luna: (wails) Crowd: (commotion)

Luna: AHH!!

Woah woah woah!

Kids: Ah! Oof!

Luna: (yelling) Fabuloso: AH!

(crash)

Luna: Woah...that was a hoot!

Fabuloso: Luna!

Great job, what a crowd!

Wow!

Luna: Actually, it was all Andy's idea.

Momo: and the kids made the kite, Andy painted it...

...and Momo's family made the paper!

Luna: Hey, Fuujin.

Fuujin: Don't forget.

We had a deal...

Luna: Oh, right.

Fuujin: Wheeeeee!

All: (Laugh)

Carmen: Hi! This is Carmen with a tale from Japan.

Once there was a warrior traveling

in a terrible rain storm.

He still had a long way to go.

But he saw a cat signaling to him from a house

where the cat lived with an old man.

The cat, named Tama,

waved 'Come in, come in' with his paw.

The warrior couldn't ignore a waving cat,

so he stepped toward the doorway.

BOOM!

A bolt of lightning struck the very spot

where he'd been standing.

The warrior was saved by Tama and he knew it.

The samurai was so grateful, he fixed up the old house

so the cat and old man lived well from then on.

All this good luck had come from Tama the cat,

so the old man made a statue of Tama

and since then, many, many more

Lucky Cat statues have been made,

to spread more and more good luck..

Carmen: Hey batter, batter, batter, batter...

Andy: It's a high fly ball!

Leo: Ah, what a beautiful day for tea.

Wolfgang: You said, it Leo.

It's simply TEA-lightful.

Leo/Wolfgang: (laughs) Hahahaha!

Carmen: You're out!

Andy: Hey, no fair!

Wolfgang: (gasps) Careful, kiddos!

This Japanese tea set is fragile.

Carmen: (gasps) Are you guys having a tea party?

Leo: It's not a tea party.

My dad is showing me how to perform

a traditional tea ceremony,

like they do here...

umm, where are we?

Andy: Yeah, where are we today?

Carmen: Let's ask the Magic Globe!

In Tokyo, the language most people speak is Japanese.

People here see beauty in things

that you and I may not notice...

Like tea!

The traditional Japanese tea ceremony is an art form

that shows the beauty and peacefulness of making

a simple bowl of tea.

Andy: Bowl? Don't you mean cup?

Leo: No, she's right!

The tea ceremony uses ceramic bowls, called Chawan,

for preparing and drinking the tea!

Andy: Chawan!

Leo: Up close you can see that the bowl isn't perfect.

The Japanese believe that these bumps and dents

make it beautiful.

Leo: The simple cherry blossom design

matches the rest of the set.

Andy: Wow! I never knew that tea-making could be art!

I wanna try!

Leo: Cool it, Andy! This stuff requires a delicate touch.

Observe. Whoa!

Oh, no! Ah!

In fact, there's a store right down the street.

Carmen: Let's bring the broken pieces

so we can find one that looks just like it!

Andy: Good idea, Carmen!

Don't worry Leo, we'll have this problem fixed in a jiffy!

Wolfgang: Here's some yen. It's Japanese money,

enough to buy a new bowl.

Leo: Thanks, Papa.

Wolfgang: Just make sure the price isn't too steep!

(laughs)

Andy: Wow! This place is packed with pottery!

Leo: Yeah, but I can't find anything that matches my bowl...

Carmen: I'm scared to move.

I don't want to break anything...

These tiny aisles aren't made for a moon like me.

Hana: That's okay, happens to me all the time!

She was just showing me around Tokyo's famous

Kappabashi street!

Hana: Welcome, everyone!

Hana: Any friend of Luna are friends of mine!

Andy: Phew.

Leo: Luna, I've got a problem.

I broke my tea bowl, and now I can't find one to replace it.

Luna: Oh my, that is a problem.

Maybe my friend Hana can...

Hana: Help?

Yes, I can!

Hana: As you can see, I'm a little clumsy.

So broken pottery happens to be a specialty of mine.

Andy: You don't say...

Hana: Let's take your broken bowl

and head back to my studio... where I work!

Hana: And uh...

I guess we'll be taking this other broken stuff as well.

Leo: Heh, heh.

Hana: Here we are... my very own pottery studio!

Carmen/Andy/Leo: Whoaaa!

Andy: Everything really is broken.

What do you do with all this junk?

Hana: Junk, Andy? It's not junk.

Broken pottery is the key to

practicing the beautiful art of... Kintsugi!

Carmen/Andy/Leo: Kinsu... Kin... Sugi...

Kintsugi... Kintsugi...

All: What's Kintsugi?

Hana: Kintsugi means golden repair...

and is the Japanese art of fixing broken pottery

with gold seams!

In Japan, we try not to live a wasteful life...

so we don't like to throw things away

just because they're broken.

We make them into something new.

Hana: I collect things like broken plates and bowls...

Hana...and put them back together to become

better than before!

Leo: Whoaaaa!

It looks like rivers of gold!

How do you do that?

Hana: Well... Let me show you...

Hana: Woah! (crashing)

Hana: Ah ey oh!

(struggling)

Hana: What you're looking at is actual gold!

Leo: What?

Really?

Hana: I put the pieces back together with a special kind of

glue and then cover it with real gold powder

to give it that golden shine!

Leo: Real gold?

Every bowl is a treasure!

Hana: Exactly!

Isn't that right, Luna?

Luna: Yup!

And most importantly, Kintsugi teaches us that things

still have value even when they are not perfect.

Leo: Does that mean... my bowl can be fixed too?

Luna: Of course it can!

Hana's been fixing my stuff for years!

Hana: Leo, what do you say we glue your bowl back together?

Andy, Carmen, you can get going on your own projects.

Help yourselves to the pile of bowls I've broken today.

Andy/Carmen: Awesome!

Leo: Luna, I don't know if I can do this.

If only I hadn't been so clumsy in the first place...

The imperfections are what make it beautiful!

Just like the pottery used in the tea ceremonies!

Luna: Speaking of tea ceremonies,

I fixed it with Kintsugi, the art of broken pottery repair.

Sorry it doesn't look like it used to...

Wolfgang: Hmm... oh...

Wolfgang: Thank you for joining me.

Now, let the ceremony begin.

Wolfgang: First, I must clean the chawan with my fukusa...

a red Japanese cloth.

Wolfgang: Next, the scoop.

Now, I warm the bowl with hot water

and rinse the whisk.

Wolfgang: Once everything is clean and dry,

I pour scoops of tea powder.

I add the hot water and whisk it really fast.

Now the tea is ready!

Wolfgang: I must spin the bowl twice

to make sure it faces the right way.

Wolfgang: Enjoy and remember,

slurping sounds are a compliment.

Leo: (slurps) Ahh! Wow!

This tastes amazing!

Carmen: Yeah! Not to mention

the tea looks so pretty against the gold seams.

(slurping) Andy: I could go for seconds!

Leo: Kintsugi is amazing.

It's taught me that things have value

even when they're not perfect.

Thanks for taking us to Hana's studio, Luna!

Now, when I break something, I'll fix it

instead of throwing it away.

Leo: Luna?
