Carmen: Hi, it's Carmen with a folktale from East Africa

called "Why the Hippopotamus Lives in Water."

Carmen: Long ago, the hippo spent all day on land.

The other land animals had coverings for their skin,

like fur, feathers, or scales.

But not the hippo.

His skin was unprotected

and easily b*rned by the sun.

So, the hippo went to the river

and politely asked the river creatures

if he could join them in the water.

The crocodile, the water birds,

and the others said,

"No, you're too big. You'll eat all the fish

and there will be nothing left for us!"

But the hippo said,

"How about if I don't eat fish?

How about if I don't eat anything in the water.

Carmen: "I'll leave the river during the evening

to eat the grass on land."

The animals still weren't sure,

so the hippo promised one more thing:

"What if, while in the water,

I open my mouth very wide

so you can look inside to make sure

there are no fish in there?!"

This convinced the river animals,

so to this very day,

the hippo spends his days in the water

and opens his mouth wide

for the others to look inside.

And he stays nice and cool,

even during the hottest days of summer.

The end.

Hi, everyone!

The city of Nairobi is located in the country of Kenya,

on the continent of Africa.

Magic Globe: Nairobi is the largest city in Kenya and,

to answer your question Leo,

yes, farms are usually found outside of cities,

but in Nairobi, many people have small farms

right in their neighborhoods,

where they grow food to feed their families

and also sell to others.

Carmen: But cities are crowded.

Where do they keep all the plants and animals?

Magic Globe: Farmers in Nairobi are good at thinking of

creative new ways to house animals and grow vegetables

without needing a lot of land.

Have fun in Nairobi, everyone!

Luna/Carmen/Andy/Leo: Thanks, Magic Globe!

Andy: How is farming creative?

I thought being creative was just something artists do?

Luna: Being creative isn't just for artists, Andy.

It means thinking about things differently

and solving problems in new ways.
