Leo: We live in a big beautiful world.

Leo: I'm Leo.

Andy: I'm Andy

Carmen: And I'm Carmen

Carmen: Our parents work in a circus

that travels all around the world.

And we travel with them.

Andy: So we never know where in the world we will end up next.

(train whistling)

Carmen: But wherever we go, we know that Luna the moon

will be there with us.

Leo: Hi Soupy. You bet I do!

Soupy/Leo: ♪ Tasty scoop of the Soup Cave Soup ♪

Leo: You hear that Matilda?

There's gunna be a soup cave restaurant

around here soon.

(slurps)

Squirrel: (squeaking)

(splash)

Leo: Ahh!!!

(splat)

Squirrel: (squeaking)

Andy: Leo, Matilda.

Did you see a squirrel go by here?

(laughing)

Carmen: (humming)

Leo: What's going on out here?

Leo: Ah!

Andy: Wooo! (laughing)

Moose: (groans)

Leo: What is this place?

Why are there so many animals?

Leo: Ah!

Andy: I don't know Leo.

Isn't it great? I made so many new friends.

(squeaking)

Carmen: So have I,

these birds are great singers.

(birds chirping)

Leo: What kind of place has so many animals?

Carmen: That's a good question.

What is this place Magic Globe?

Magic Globe: Hello everyone!

Today we're in the city of Juneau,

in the state of Alaska,

part of the United States of America.

Alaska is known for its natural beauty

and is home to many wild animals.

Leo: But you said Juneau is a city.

Cities are full of buildings, cars and people.

They're not supposed to have wild animals running around.

Magic Globe: Well, this one does Leo.

That's part of what makes Juneau so special.

Leo: Oh...

Magic Globe: (chuckles)

Juneau is surrounded by trees, grassy fields and mountains!

It's a perfect place for wild animals to live.

Enjoy these beautiful natural surroundings friends.

Kids: Thanks Magic Globe!

Andy: I think Juneau sounds awesome!

Carmen: Me too!

I want to explore and make more animal friends.

Wanna come Leo?

Leo: Eh... You guys go ahead and explore Juneau.

I think I'll just stay inside and watch Soupy the-

Leo: Bear!

Hey bear!

You can't eat those apples! They're for the Circo!

Hey!!

Porcupine you can't scratch your back there!

We just got that giant inflatable

Fabuloso for the show tonight.

(pop)

(balloon squeals)

Leo: Ah!!

I'm sick and tired of all these-

(bird screeching)

Andy: Woaah!

Carmen: I think that's a bald Eagle.

Andy: It's coming this way!

Carmen/Andy: Ah!!

Andy: That was a close one Leo!

That eagle got really friendly!

(screeching)

Leo: AH! He's coming back!

(thunk)

Run for it!

(squawking)

Andy: Why is he after us?

Leo: I don't want to stop to find out!

Aw!

Carmen/Andy: Oof!

Kids: Ah! Luna: Ouch!

Those mosquitoes again!

Kids: Luna!

Luna: (gasps)

You're not mosquito! You're friend-squitos!

Carmen: ♪ Luna, come and play! ♪

Leo: ♪ Luna's here whaddya say?! ♪

Andy: ♪ Luna, bright as day! ♪

Leo/Carmen/Andy: ♪ Show us the world, lead the way! ♪

Luna: Hi Andy, Carmen and Leo!

We were just having some delicious root tea!

Meet my friend Skye and some little salmon fish.

Skye/Fish: Nice to meet you all!

Skye: Welcome to my lovely hometown of Juneau Alaska.

Come join us.

My little Salmon buddies were just heading out.

(slurping)

Luna: Bye little salmon fish.

(splash)

Luna: How are you friends?

Carmen: Good! Andy: Awesome!

Leo: Bad. Luna: Cool!

Yay! Oh no. What's wrong Leo?

Leo: So many things Luna!

I've got squirrels in my Soupy the Bear soup,

Bears in my apples,

and porcupines in my inflatable things.

There's just too many animals around.

Skye: Woah! Hold on there Leo.

There aren't too many animals in Juneau.

We love animals.

Leo: But with all the houses and people around here,

aren't the animals in your way?

Skye: Mm, nah.

Try looking at it like this.

Maybe we're the ones in their way.

Luna: I think Skye wants us to follow her Leo.

Leo: Okay...

Leo: Uh Skye? Where are you taking us?

Skye: To a very special place in Juneau my friend.

Leo: Oh. Can I stop spinning now?

Skye: Oh, yeah we stopped doing that a while ago.

(bats screeching)

Skye: Here we are everyone. Right through there.

I think Leo should do the honors and check it out first

Leo: (gulp)

Leo: Wooow!

This is the most beautiful place I've ever seen.

Andy: Squirrels!

Leo: The animals!

They're all so...happy.

Luna: This is a place where only animals live Leo.

Leo: Is it okay for us to visit?

The animals don't mind?

Skye: They don't mind, as long as we walk gently

respect their home and give them their space.

Luna: We co-exist.

That means we all live together and respect each other's space.

Leo: Co-exist.

You know that sounds pretty cool.

Carmen: Can we explore Luna?

Luna: You read my mind Carmen!

Let's go...

Into the wild!

Kids: Yaaay!

Luna: ♪ Earth is home for all of you ♪

♪ And all the other creatures too ♪

♪ Just like you and just like me, ♪

♪ They all need a place to be ♪

♪ Earth belongs to you and me, ♪

♪ we have responsibility. ♪

♪ Clean water and clean air for everyone, ♪

♪ it's only fair ♪

♪ The Earth belongs to us all ♪

♪ Earth is home as you can see ♪

♪ For every animal and tree ♪

♪ Each needs its special place ♪

♪ So love the Earth a lot, it's the only one we've got ♪

(eagle screeching) ♪♪

Leo: Look! There's the Eagle who said hi to me earlier.

Skye: You see? The animals just need a place to live too.

Just like we live in cities and towns.

I mean Juneau wasn't always here

before the buildings went up, Juneau looked a lot like this.

But does that mean we shouldn't build buildings anywhere?

Skye: No of course not.

We just need to be aware of the animals too.

And make sure we all have what we need.

(twig snaps)

(sounds of struggling)

Carmen: That is one weird sounding animal.

Andy: Let's go see what it is.

Carmen: Andy! Wait for us!

(groaning)

Soupy: Move it you bush!

Leo: Soupy the bear! What are you doing here?!

Soupy: Woaah!

Clearing this whole area here

for my new Juneau Alaska Soup Cave location.

Andy: This area?

With the squirrels?

Carmen: And the birds?

Soupy: Yup, now please leave this future Soup Cave location.

You know, until we open Of course.

Then come eat all of the soups.

Leo: Wait! Soupy the Bear!

This is already an eating location for Mr Snail.

He doesn't need or even like soup.

Soupy: No I'm pretty sure that's where the ball pit is going.

Leo: What? Ball pit?

No...no ball pit.

Snails need space too, Mr Soupy.

Soupy: Okay fine.

I'll just cut down these trees

to clear space for the parking lot then.

Leo: No wait!

The Eagle family! Soupy: Huh?

Leo: There's an Eagle mom with her freshly hatched

Eaglets up there.

Don't you see Mr Soupy?

The animals need a space of their own.

Just like us.

(bear roar)

Soupy: Huh. I guess I never looked at it that way before.

Leo: That's right.

We just need to be mindful

of what the animals need when we build.

Skye: We know you're just trying to do your job

but there must be a better way.

Soupy: Wow you're all making good points

about respecting the animals in their space.

I think I'll build my new Soupy Soup Cave

somewhere closer to the city.

Leo: Yeah, I'm excited to visit your new Soup Cave location.

Just not at this location.

Soupy: Alrighty, I gotta go.

He he he! Bye!

(bear roar)

Andy: Yeah! You did it Leo!

You saved my little squirrel buddy's home.

Carmen: And the trees are safe for all my bird friends.

Luna: Yeah, great work Leo.

Leo: It was all thanks to you and Skye

for teaching me to co-exist.

Skye: Any time little blue buddy.

(groaning)

Leo: Huh!?

What's that?

(banging)

Moose: (grunting)

Leo: Oh right.

Just an animal friend looking for some space of his own.

Leo: I'm happy to coexist with you big guy.

Skye: (laughs)

I'm glad you're getting along with the animals Leo.

Leo: Me too!

Did you see that awesome Moose, Luna?

Luna?

Luna: Here I am!

Leo: Luna, thank you for your help today.

I wish I could see more animals tonight.

But I think I need to get some soup and some sleep.

Luna: There really are a lot of animals to see here

in Juneau Alaska.

But remember, there's always tomorrow.

Andy: Hi, it's Andy.

When we visited Juneau, I learned a bunch of

fun facts about Alaska.

♪ Just follow the Northern Star, ♪

♪ to the biggest state by far. ♪

♪

♪ Alaska. ♪

♪ Between two oceans. ♪

♪ Shore to shore. Alaska natives ♪

♪ and so many more make their home in Alaska. ♪

♪ With two thousand glaciers ♪

♪ And twelve thousand rivers. ♪

♪ Fish swim in three million lakes. ♪

♪

♪ The top ten tallest US mountains ♪

(yodeling)

♪ But apparently only one kind of snake? ♪

The Garter Snake!

♪ Amazing Northern lights fill the sky with color ♪

♪ almost every night. ♪

♪ In Alaska, ♪

♪ they have moose and mountain goats ♪

♪ and whales there too. ♪

♪ Polar bears and eagles and caribou. ♪

♪ They have a law that I suppose makes sense up there. ♪

♪ It's against the law to wake up a hibernating bear. ♪

♪ so follow the Northern Star ♪

♪ to the biggest state by far. ♪

♪ Alaska. ♪

Carmen: Story story.

Carmen: And so, with the magical MacGuffin

safely returned to the Wizard's Wardrobe,

Katmione Everquest was ready for her next adventure.

Maria: We may not have another book to read

but I can tell you a story.

It's one my mother used to tell me

when I was a little girl.

Carmen: Uh thanks Mom, but I'm all about The Hairy Games now.

Maria: Oh, okay.

Carmen: I'll just have to wait a year for a good story.

Today we're in the city of Juneau,

in the state of Alaska,

which is located in the United States of America.

But unlike most of the states in the country

Alaska is waaaay up here.

Carmen: Near the North Pole?

Brrr!

No wonder it's so cold.

Magic Globe: Today is a special day in Juneau

because they're having a big festival.

Celebrating Alaska natives.

Carmen: Alaska natives?

Magic Globe: Alaska natives are the people

who have lived here from the beginning.

Thousands of years before Alaska became a state.

Carmen: Juneau sounds cool. Thanks Magic Globe!

Magic Globe: No problem

Carmen: And thanks for reading with me Mom.

Maria: Have fun in Juneau Carmen!

Carmen, meet my friend Hana!

Hannah: Hello.

Luna: She's telling a story at the big festival today

and I'm her to see her big debut!

Carmen: You mean the Alaska native festival downtown?

Magic Globe told me all about it!

Does that mean you're an Alaska Native?

Hannah: That's right. My people, the Tlingit.

Have lived in this area for thousands of years.

The Tlingit are just one of the Alaska native cultures

celebrated at the festival

Leo: Luna's is going to take us there

We've just been waiting for you Carmen.

Andy: Yeah! What took you so long?

Carmen: Oh, I was just finishing book sixteen

of the Hairy Games with my mom.

Hannah: No way! You like the Hairy games too!

Carmen: Eek!

We should totally be friends!

Which district are you sorted into?

Well Grisseldorf is pretty cool,

but I'm definitely more of a

Carmen/Hannah: Restletoff!

(laughing)

Andy: We need to read more.

Carmen: I just can't believe we have to wait a whole

year for the next book!

Hannah:Uh seriously

Well if it's a good story you're after

you should come hear me tell mine at the festival.

Carmen: What do you mean tell yours?

Is that as good as reading from a book?

Hannah: Yes.

We Tlingit have a long tradition of storytelling

That means we memorize stories and tell them out loud

instead of writing them down.

My grandmother taught me the stories I know,

And when I grow up I'll teach them to someone new.

Andy: That sounds like a lot of work!

Hannah: Well, it should be.

Being a Tlingit storyteller is a big deal.

It's the duty of every Tlingit it to honor ancestors

and future generations in our language,

We call this value "Haa Shuka".

Leo: Haa Shuka.

I like it. Even though we're not Tlingit.

I guess my family does that too.

My grandpa taught my dad how to cook

and now my dad is teaching me.

Hannah: Good point Leo.

You don't have to be Tlingit to learn from your ancestors.

And one day, when you become a great chef

you can pass on what you've learned.

Luna: Oh my, look at the time. We better get moving.

Hannah, will you lead us to the festival?

Hannah: Sure. Come on Carmen,

I'll show you around Juneau while we walk.

Over here is my school. My teacher is really nice.

She likes the Hairy Games too!

Andy: I guess I'm a little confused.

Why tell a story from memory,

why not just read a book?

Luna: Books are great for sharing a story

with lots of people,

But sharing stories from memory is a special experience between

storyteller and listener that makes them feel close.

These are special family stories.

This's my grandmother I was telling you about.

Grandmother Rita: Oh Hannah! I'm so proud of you.

All grown up and storytelling already.

Are you excited?

Hannah: A little nervous. A little jittery, but excited.

Grandmother Rita: Well, I hope you're ready

Hannah: Ah!

Hannah: You're right Grandmother Rita,

do you have my clothes for the ceremony?

Grandmother Rite: Settle down. I've got them somewhere.

Hannah: Thanks, Grandma Rita!

Grandma Rita: Good luck!

(hushed whispers)

Hannah: (deep breath) Hello everyone.

My name is Hannah and I am Tlingit.

And the story I'm about to tell

is one I've learned from my grandmother Rita.

We the Tlingit people tell many stories

about Raven and Eagle.

Two very different birds.

(drumming)

In many ways opposites.

(raven cawing)

Hannah: This is Raven.

(tapping)

You see Raven doesn't take life too seriously

Eagle is not amused.

He's more grown up.

His elegant head shows age and wisdom

Eagle is very proud of his neatly groomed head.

But Raven keeps messing it up.

Eagle's had enough!

He flies up to chase after Raven!

Zoom! Zoom!

Zig! Zag! Woosh!

But just as Eagle's about to catch Raven...

Raven crashes right into a tree!

Branches and leaves fly everywhere

as Raven tumbles toward the earth.

But just then, Eagle reaches out

and grabs onto Ravens wing, flying them both to safety.

Eagle and Raven smile, knowing that despite

their differences they're good friends.

And will always care for each other like family.

(cheering)

Carmen: Great job Hannah, I loved it!

Hannah: I'm glad you guys liked it.

And that's not the only Raven and Eagle story.

We have many more.

All passed down from my ancestors.

It's how we keep our stories alive.

Carmen: Wow that's so cool.

I wonder what my family stories air like.

Oh...

Luna: What's the matter Carmen?

Carmen: It's just that my mom wanted to tell me a story

that grandma used to tell her.

But I didn't want to hear it because I thought

it would be boring.

I didn't even give it a chance and now I feel bad.

Luna: Well, let's go back to the Circo,

I'm sure your mom would still love to tell you her story.

Carmen: You're right Luna.

Hannah, thank you so much for inviting us to the festival.

Hannah: No thank you for coming to see my performance.

Now I see that family stories connect us to people we love.

Maria: Oh Carmen, of course.

And that's why my great, great grandfather

is nicknamed the Coyote

(howling)

Carmen: Aww! What a happy ending!

Maria: (laughs)

That was my reaction when I first heard it too.

Carmen: Thank you for telling me the story Mama.

When I grow up, I'm going to tell it to my kids.

I'll bet Luna would want to hear it too.

Maria: Where is Luna?

Luna: Up here!

Carmen: Luna!

You're already up in the sky?

Luna: Yep.

I learned so much about Tlingit storytelling

and about my own family.
