Leo: We live in a big, beautiful world.

Leo: I'm Leo.

Andy: I'm Andy.

Carmen: And I'm Carmen.

Our parents work in a circus that travels

all around the world and we travel with them.

Andy: So we never know where in the world we will end up next.

(train whistling)

Carmen: But wherever we go, we know that

Luna the Moon will be there with us.

Andy/Luna: Aaaahh!!

Luna: Nobody is going to believe what happened to us!

Andy: We gotta go tell Carmen and Leo right now!

(upbeat banjo music) ♪

Andy/Luna: Carmen! Leoo!

Carmen: Hey! Luna's coming!

Leo: And Andy!

Carmen: ♪ Luna, come and play! ♪

Leo: ♪ Luna's here whaddya say?! ♪

Andy: ♪ Luna, bright as day! ♪

Leo/Carmen/Andy: ♪ Show us the world lead the way! ♪

Andy: You'll never believe what just happened to us!

Luna: Y-Yeah! Sitting! Water!

Andy: ...and then like this... Schwap!

Luna: But like- blubba-blubba-blubba..

Andy: Right, and then you, I mean me...

I mean us... I mean, what do I mean?!

Luna: (pwttt) And then "Look out!"

Blubba flubba glubba... Eek! Glug-glug-glug! PLOINK!

Carmen: Do you know what they're talking about??

Leo: No idea.

I think they're trying to tell us a story.

But I can't understand a thing!

Carmen: Maybe take a deep breath and try again?

Andy: (huge inhale)

River-splash-mud-fish-Luna...

Luna: This isn't working...

Andy: Our story is so fantastic, words can't tell it!

Leo: Well, hold on, where were you two when this happened?

Andy: Oh, that's easy! We were in...

wait where are we today?

Carmen: I know who can help us with that.

Carmen: The Magic Globe!

Magic Globe: I'm happy to help, Carmen!

Today we're in Juneau, the capital city of the state of

Alaska in the United States of America!

Many people in Juneau are members of a native community

called Tlingit.

The Tlingits were some of the first people to live in Alaska,

which makes them Alaska natives.

A special part of Tlingit culture is carving totem poles

from cedar tree logs.

Totem pole artists use images of animals, rivers, mountains,

people, planets or stars to describe a community,

or sometimes tell a story.

Magic Globe: If you're having trouble telling your story here

in Juneau, maybe a totem pole can inspire you.

Andy: Really?

A totem pole could help us tell our story?

Magic Globe: (chuckles) Yes,

and a good word for you to know

is the Tlingit word for totem pole.

It's "Kooteeyaa".

Andy: Kooteeyaa!

Leo: Making a totem pole sounds hard.

Can't you just tell the story now that you're a little calmer?

Luna: I don't know, Leo.

Making a totem pole sounds like a great idea!

Andy: (excitedly) Yeah!

Luna: My buddy James is a Tlingit artist

who carves totem poles here in Juneau.

Maybe he can help. C'mon I'll introduce you all.

James: Huh?

Luna: (struggling)

Whew. We made it.

James: (gasps) Luna!

Luna: James!

Luna/James: Secret handshake!

James: So great to see you, Luna!

Luna: You too, James!

Carmen: What was that cool dance you guys were doing??

Luna: Oh that? That's our secret handshake.

It's how we say hello,

just like when you guys sing the Luna song!

We are missing one more little friend though.

Where did he run off to?

Andy: Totem Pooole!

James: (terrified scream)

Andy: I love it!

Its soo coool!

James: Luna, what... is that thing?

Luna: That's my friend Andy!

He's just a little excited...

Andy: Wowww...

Luna: (gasps) And covered in squirrels.

Andy: Hi!

Luna: Andy, Carmen, and Leo, I want you to meet James.

He is an Alaska native...

and a Tlingit carver.

Andy/Carmen/Leo: Hi, James!

James: Uh.. Hello...

(whispering) Luna, why is he standing so close?

Luna: (whispering) He's a very friendly frog...

Andy: I love this totem pole!

Or Kooteeya in Tlingit.

Right, James? Did you make it?

James: Yes.

Andy: Whoa... that is... so beautiful.

But listen, James.

Luna and I have an amazing story from this morning.

The short version is basically that we were at the river

(speaks excited gibberish) Bwaahh! Skeebiddy!

Skeebiddy! Poof! Floosh! Rahh! Bluba-blu-rahh-bwha...

Luna: (excited gibberish)

And then I was, whoa, yikes

(struggle, grunt) Squeeze, Pop!!

Andy: Can you see it? You know, as a totem pole?

Luna and I were hoping you'd help us make a Tlingit

totem pole to tell our story.

James: You can't just make a Tlingit totem pole about

anything, and not everyone can make one.

It's a sacred tradition in our community, handed down

from my grandparents, and my grandparents' grandparents.

But maybe I can help you make your own totem pole.

It would look a little different from traditional

Tlingit carvings, but it could help tell your story!

Andy: Awesome! It would be such an honor.

I wanna tell our story!

(Hoompf)

James: (whispering) Luna,

I don't know if I can work with this guy.

Luna: He's just excited about totem poles, James.

Give him a chance.

You two might have more in common than you think.

James: Well, okay.

Sure, Andy.

I'll help you make your totem pole.

Andy/Carmen/Leo/Luna: YAY!

Andy: You're gonna love working on our story, James!

Leo: Luna, what are we gonna do while they're

making the totem pole?

Luna: Maybe we can help.

Totem poles take a lot of work.

Leo: Cool, this is amazing...

Hockbar: Look at that, there's some nice detail there.

Hockbar: (whispering) Um, It's a Totem pole, sir.

Fabuloso: Oh yes thank you. Totem pole I've ever seen!!

Andy: Just look at that pole, Luna!

Luna: It completely captures what happened to us.

Andy: The imagery... the colors...

I can really feel our story now!

Luna: I think I'm ready to tell it Andy, are you?

Andy: I think so!

Luna: That means it's...

Luna/Andy: STORY TIME!

Andy: Circo Fabuloso!

Boy, do we have a story for you!

Please direct your attention

to the top of our majestic totem pole!

Circo Folks: A story! I've never directed my atention

to the top of a totem pole before.

Andy: It all started days ago with this guy, me...

Andy: And Luna, that's her!

Luna: We took a stroll along a beautiful river in Juneau!

This carving here represents the river.

Circo Folk: Oooooh...

Fabuloso: What happened next, Luna?

Luna: Well, we both sat down...

Andy: And dunked our feet in the water...

Luna: When low and behold...

Andy: A giant sockeye salmon leaped out of the water...

and landed on Luna's head!

Circo Folk: Oh no! Luna!!

Oh Luna! Acronauts: (Boing, Boing)

Carmen: (gasps) Oh no!

Leo: Were you okay, Luna?

Luna: Yes, I was okay.

Except I was stuck in the mouth of a big salmon!

Andy: But I came to the rescue!

Carmen/Leo/James: Go Andy! Wooo!

Luna: Andy tugged and tugged.

Andy: And I tugged and tugged some more!

Luna/Andy: Untiiiiil...

Pop!

Fabuloso/James:(gasps)

Luna: Andy pulled me out of our new fish friend...

Andy: ...and we left the river and went back to the Circo...

Andy/Luna: Covered in mud!

(laughs)

Circo Folk: (laughs)

Fabuloso: Ohhh my, that is amazing!

Leo: What a great story, I can see it all in the totem pole...

Leo: ...the river... the salmon...

Luna stuck inside the salmon...

and Andy trying to get Luna unstuck.

I can't believe something that doesn't move can be...

So moving!

Carmen: Your story was really thrilling, guys!

And now this totem pole will be here to remind us of it!

You're truly a Totem master, James!

James: Thanks, Carmen!

Salmon: Wait!!

(bubbling noises, rumbling)

Bluurghh!

Salmon: Luna!!!

I'm so sorry I fell on you, eh!

I didn't realize that was your head.

I...I thought you were a giant meatball!

Luna: It's okay, Mr. Salmon.

You inspired a great story and an amazing totem pole.

Salmon: S-So you... forgive me, Luna?

Luna: Of course!

Fabuloso: Come, friend...

Chef Chockers will make you some nice meatballs.

Salmon: Oh, thank you!

I do so love meatballs, they're so tasty.

and I love totem poles!

Andy Hi, it's Andy!

Here's an old story from Alaska

about a woman who raised a bear... as her son!

Once, a woman living in the Alaskan wild

found a polar bear cub

who had no one to care for him.

The woman decided she would be his family -

he would be her "Bear Son".

She shared all she had,

which wasn't much.

But he was great at catching fish <span> ,

and soon caught more than they needed.

Then they had food to share with the whole village <span> .

Instead of being happy,

the Fishermen of the village were jealous.

One night <span> , the Polar Bear brought back

more food than ever before.

He left it with the woman.

When she woke up, she found the fish,

but also saw her Bear Son was gone.

The woman knew little bears grow up

and go to live on their own,

but it just happened so fast with her Bear Son.

She went to look for him.

She spotted him, out on the ice,

and saw that he was a grown-up bear.

That night, the woman went home, proud of her Bear Son.

Carmen/Leo: (sips) Ahhh.

Carmen: Wow, this hot chocolate's perfect

for the cold weather.

I just wish Andy were here to try some.

Where is he?

Carmen: Oh! There you are!

Andy: What's all this?!

We don't have time to just sit around!

As an artist,

it is my duty to explore

and find beautiful art!

Leo: But Andy, we don't even know what city we're in!

the biggest and coldest state

in the United States of America.

then the Mendenhall Glacier Ice Caves

are perfect for you!

Magic Globe: The Mendenhall Glacier is a HUGE

block of ice that moves veeery slowly.

Most glaciers are hundreds of years old.

(twinkling sounds) And inside the glacier

are the amazing Mendenhall Ice Caves.

From in there, everything looks beautiful and blue!

Andy: So it's art... but art made by nature!

So cool!

Magic Globe: (Chuckles) Have fun in Juneau!

Leo: Those ice caves look nice, but...

Cold.

Leo: (shivers).

Andy: There! Now you're all dressed for the cold weather.

Andy: Now let's go see some blue ice caves!

Carmen: Fine...

Leo: I know you're excited about these ice caves, Andy,

but do you even know where they are?

What if we get lost?

We don't know anything about Juneau, Alaska.

Andy: That's true...

(sparkle bling) I'm so glad we found you!

Leo: We found a Luna too!

Luna: Hey, guys. Welcome to Juneau.

Don't mind the ice sculptures-

I got inspired by all this ice and snow.

So, what's up today?

Andy: Luna, do you know how to get to the Mendenhall Glacier?

We wanna see the ice caves!

Luna: Oh, sure, I'll take you there.

The Mendenhall Glacier is just a quick bus ride away.

Andy: Seeee?

A quick ride on a warm bus.

We'll be there in no time!

(bus engine)

Luna: (grunting)

Polar Bear: Excuse me!

We'd like to see the Mendenhall glacier, please.

Mo: Ah, the glacier.

Just look through any window or step outside to see..

Mo: Well, hey there, Luna!

Luna: Hi, Mo!

My friends here want to see the Mendenhall Glacier.

Mo: Right outside.

Andy: Actually, we want to go inside the glacier

to see the ice caves.

Mo: Oh... the ice caves?

Well... that's a liiiitle bit different...

(clunk)

Andy: Uh... what's all that?

Mo: It's your hiking gear, of course!

After all, for a long journey you'll need...

Safety helmets, snowshoes so you don't slip and fall

rope and healthy nut bars so you don't go hungry...

Carmen: What??

Leo: It's that hard?

What happened to right outside?

Mo: Well, from right outside,

visitors can see the glacier from a distance.

But getting to the caves is much more difficult!

You're gonna have to hike through forests

and over rocks and icy snow!

All in all, there and back,

you're looking at an -hour hike.

Andy/Carmen/Leo: hours?!!

Carmen: Andy, you said this would be easy!

Leo: Yeah! More like freezy! Let's just go back!

Andy: Guys, guys!

Maybe it's a tiny bit harder than we thought,

but the ice caves will really be worth it, they're works of art!

Luna: I'm sure the hike won't be so bad.

Mo: Help yourself to the equipment!

Just keep walking that way

and you'll see the start of the trail.

Good luck!

Andy: Thank you!

Leo: Oh boy...

Leo: Are we there yet?

Andy: No.

Leo: Are we there yet?

Andy: No.

Leo: Are...

we...

there yet?

Andy: Nope.

Luna: Woah-woah-ahhh!

Wooo! (crash)

Luna: I'm okay!

(snow crunching)

Carmen: I've got snow in my boots.

Leo: I've got snow in my socks.

I can't take much more of this...

(THUNK) Andy, are we-- Andy: YES!

We're there!

we've reached the end of the forest!

(exciting music)

Andy: We're here, we're here! We're finally...

where are we?

Leo: Where are the ice caves?

Carmen: Ooo! There they are!

Just on the other side of this snowy field!

(wind howls)

Leo: Brr.

I just went from freezing to frozen. Brrr!

Andy: What are you guys waiting for?

(giggles)

Last one there is a frozen egg!

Luna: Ummm... Andy?

You're not going anywhere.

Andy: Hmmm.

(smack, smack, smack)

The snow is frozen solid!

I guess snowshoes don't work on ice.

Leo: Bummer, I guess we'll just have to go home

and drink hot chocolate.

Carmen: Actually, that does sound nice...

Andy: Come on guys, don't you want to see nature's art?

Whoa whoa...

(splat)

Leo: I'm cold!

Carmen: I'm tired!

Beaver: I'm a beaver!

Well, been fun. Good luck crossing the ice!

(squeak! squeak!)

Luna: Come on guys, we're almost there.

We can't give up now!

Andy: It's okay, Luna.

Maybe they're right.

Maybe the ice caves aren't worth all this trouble...

Luna: Andy, I know these little setbacks are frustrating,

but nothing worth doing ever comes easy.

We just need to keep a positive attitude!

And I know the perfect song for that.

Andy: Luna, it's working!

We're sliding across the frozen field!

Luna: Next stop, the ice caves!

Bo: Why, hi there, everyone!

Welcome to the Mendenhall Ice Caves!

Andy/Carmen/Leo/Luna: Hi, Mo!

Bo: I'm not Mo, I'm Bo!

You must be thinking of my brother who works

at the visitor center.

I suppose we do look a tiny bit alike.

Andy: What are you doing out here all alone?

Bo: I'm an ice-cave tour guide!

But you're the first tourists I've seen today.

I guess the long hike and cold weather is a bit too much

for most people.

Andy: I'd go to the ends of the Earth for the sake of art!

Bo: Well, you have come to the right place!

What you're about to see is a masterpiece of nature!

Put on your helmets and let's go inside.

Luna: Oh!

Andy/Carmen/Leo: Woooow...

Andy: Cool, the caves really do glow blue!

Bo: Oh, that's right!

The ice only reflects blue light.

Leo: Where do the ice caves come from?

Bo: Ahh! You see this little stream

running down the middle of the cave?

It's glacier water!

As the glacier melts, water flows through the ice

and carves out these tunnels.

Carmen: It's hard to believe anything could melt out here...

it's sooo cold!

(shivering)

Bo: Actually, it's warmer here than it used to be.

A little melting is normal, but as the temperature goes up,

the ice melts faster.

These caves are worth the hike though, don't you think?

Andy: Yeah! I'm so glad we made it!

Leo: Me too! I'm sorry I complained a little.

I mean a lot...

Carmen: I'm sorry, too.

This is sooo beautiful.

Andy: Aww, thanks guys!

Luna: It's probably time to start heading home.

Everybody ready for the long hike back?

Andy/Carmen/Leo: Awww...

Luna: There's hot chocolate waiting for us at the Circo...

Andy/Carmen/Leo/Bo: YAAAAY!!!!

Luna: (slurp) Aaah...

Luna: I was just admiring the Alaskan snow in my moonlight.

Andy: I had a great time today, Luna.

I'm glad you were there to help.

Even when were ready to give up,

you were excited to keep going.

Luna: Actually, I was feeling pretty cold and tired too.

But if you want something,

you've got to work hard for it.

Andy: I want to see all the beautiful things in Alaska!

I don't care how hard it is.

Luna: (laughs) That's the spirit!

But we should probably rest up before our next adventure.
