Leo: Hi, it's Leo, with a tale from Polynesia

called The Kite Flier.

Stories are told throughout the islands

about a legendary hero named Maui.

He was small, but strong!

And always looking for adventure.

[bam!]

One day, Maui took some bark cloth,

folded it,

and invented the kite.

Maui: Aaaa-ha!

Leo: But Maui needed wind.

He knew from legend that the wind was trapped

inside a large gourd, so he set it free.

[cr*ck]

[whoosh!]

Well, the wind had never seen a kite before

and assumed it was a monster!

So, the wind att*cked

and blew with all his might,

pushing the kite high into the sky,

angering the clouds, and making them rain!

Maui held on tight,

and yanked the kite closer to Earth again!

Both enjoyed competition,

so back and forth they battled.

The people observed that when Maui's kite was low,

the weather was good.

If it was way up in the clouds and out of sight,

they were in for a storm.

And long after Maui and his kite were gone,

the people remembered how to forecast the weather.
