Carmen: Hi, it's Carmen with a tale called

"The First Anansi Story".

There are many stories about Anansi the Spider.

They got started long ago in

what is now the country of Ghana

on the continent of Africa.

But they made their way here to Jamaica,

where they are very popular.

All the other animals worshipped Tiger as King,

so, one day, Anansi wondered out loud,

"Why Tiger? Why not me?"

"Because," said Snake,

"Tiger is big and strong

and you are by far the littlest and weakest!"

"I see, so it's always the same old story:

Tiger did this, Tiger said that,

they even name things after Tiger,

like the Tiger Fish, Tiger Grass--"

"...don't forget the Tiger Lily!" said Tiger.

"That's right, King," said Anansi,

"many, many things.

So, I was wondering, would it be all right

if just one kind of thing got named after me?"

"Sure," laughed Tiger, "why not?"

"Gee, thanks, King," said Anansi.

"Listen, everyone.

From now on, all my stories will be named after me.

They'll be called 'Anansi Stories'.

You will be in them too,

but they will be my stories."

So, that is how this kind of story,

'The Anansi Story', was born.
