[Hal chuckling]

Here you go, Hal! Catch and fetch!

Oof!

Woops! I missed, baby!

Yeah, I noticed.

Here's another piece, Hal! Catch and fetch!

Oof!

[Hal]: Ah!

I'll get the next one.

I sure hope so. Ooh!

Here's some good catching wood!

[grunting] Here you go, Hal.

Catch and fetch!

Ha! Let me try that again.

[grunting] Catch and fetch!

Yowch!

[groaning]

You okay, Nature Cat?

Ah, as right as rain. [chuckling]

But there's something odd about that wood.

[grunting]

Wow! Ho-ho! It feels a lot heavier

than a piece of wood this size normally feels.

Whoa! It's harder than wood too.

[sniffing]

This doesn't smell like wood either, neither,

neither, either.

Time for the ultimate teeth test!

Yow!

I can't even bite into it!

The wood is hard as a rock!

Whoa! Man-oh-man! You're right, Hal!

I think this wood is rock.

[Nature Cat laughing]

Daisy, Daisy, Daisy.

It looks just like wood, therefore it must be wood.

[gasps] Maybe it's wood

that turned into a rock. Sneaky.

Turned into rock, you say?

[gasps] Do you know what that means?

Yes! Maybe. Well, not at all.

I don't know. Can I call a friend?

It means this must be the work of Woodley Wood Wizards!

Uh-huh, got it. But one quick question

about these Woodley Wood Wizards everybody's talking about...

[chuckling] Who are they?

Gather round!

You see my Great Grandpa Squinkley once told me

about strange magical wizards

who live in nature.

Nature... nature... nature...

[Squeeks]: The Woodly Wood Wizards just have to look

at something and it turns hard as rock!

[ominous music]

And if they can turn wood to stone, why,

they can probably turn mice to stone.

And dogs!

[whimpering]

Oh, puh-shaw!

There are no such things as those Wizards!

[rustling]

[together]: Ah! Woodley Wood Wizards!

Don't turn me to stone please, please, please!

[rustling]

Hello.

Ahh! Woodley Wood Wizard!

I'm not a wizard. I'm a woodchuck!

Whew. Ahh!

Woodchuck?

I am Jeremiah,

the Ancient Woodchuck of the Woods!

Now tell me, what's with all the worrying?

Ugh, it's this wood, Jeremiah.

It looks like wood, but it's hard like rock

and we have no idea why.

Perhaps I can answer that. Let me see.

Hmm... yes, yes.

This wood is hard like a rock because it's petrified.

Petrified? That means scared.

Why is the wood scared? Now I'm really scared!

[whispering]: It's Woodly Wood Wizards!

[screaming]

Easy now.

In this case, the word "petrified"

means turned to stone.

Okay, so the wood really did turn to stone?

Oh, yes! You see, petrified wood is a fossil.

Hey, we know all about fossils!

Season One, episode B,

"Daisy's Colossal Fossil!"

Page five, narrator's line ! Ahem!

[deep voice]: You see, fossils are stone-like remains

of a plant or animal

that lived thousands or even millions of years ago!

Yes! Very good! Very good!

Zounds! Does that mean this petrified wood

is from a tree that lived millions of years ago?

That is both right and correct!

In fact, petrified wood is...

a key to the past!

[gong resonating]

[Daisy]: Uh, excuse me, Jeremiah,

how is it a key to the past?

By studying petrified wood,

we can find clues to what the Earth was like

millions of years ago.

So, what do we have to do?

Like, look in a book or something?

Even better! If you want to find out

what it was like around here millions of years ago,

gather 'round the petrified wood and repeat after me.

Petrified wood is the key to the past,

so take us back really fast!

[all]: Petrified wood is the key to the past,

so take us back really fast!

Uh, Jeremiah, what's happening?!

Hold on! We're going back in time.

[all]: Whoa, whoa, whoa!

Ah... Where are we? [thudding]

The exact same spot where you found this petrified wood.

This is the very tree the wood came from.

How is it back in the ground?

We just travelled back in time

millions and millions of years!

[together]: Whoa!

[gasps] Everything looks so different!

The Earth is always changing.

Ah, it's so much hotter!

Ahh!

And wetter!

Mah-oh-man!

The trees we have don't look anything like this.

Let me see! Ugh!

These trees are some of the first trees

to ever grow on Earth.

Hi, new trees! It's me, Hal! Welcome to Earth!

Hmm... Ah!

Can we get back to the dryer, present day, please?

Sure thing! Gather 'round the tree we were touching

when we arrived and say...

[all]: Petrified wood is the key to the past!

So take us back really fast!

[all]: Whoa, whoa, whoa!

Argh!

Time travel makes me dizzy!

That was incredible!

I gotta find more pieces of petrified wood,

so that we can learn more about the past.

Well, if you want to find more,

I know the perfect spot. Follow me!

Yonward and onward!

Uh, Nature Cat, this way.

Uh-huh!

Welcome to the petrified forest.

Forest? But there are no trees.

[Jeremiah]: No trees, but lots of petrified wood.

Wow!

How did this piece of petrified wood

get so colourful?!

And this looks like quartz!

I mean, how did quartz get in petrified wood?!

[Nature Cat]: And look at these holes on the bottom of the wood.

What made these holes?

If you want answers to all your questions,

let's take another trip back in time.

Uh, do we have to?

Oh, alright. I'll do it for nature!

Onward and yonward!

[all]: Petrified wood is the key to the past!

So take us back really fast!

[all shouting]

Wow! This is a desert in the present,

but millions of years ago there were trees everywhere.

And a river too, too, also, also!

As well, as well.

Whoa! Our planet really is always changing!

My mind is blown yet again!

Hey! These trees look more like the trees we have today,

but why is there ash on them?

[Daisy]: And in the water.

And in the mud!

Huh! Maybe it came from that volcano over there?

Is anybody else all the way still dizzy?

Ah-ah-ah-achoo!

[tree creaking]

Uh-oh!

[screaming]

Yeah! Woo-hoo!

[Nature Cat]: Tally-ho!

[excited shouting]

[screaming]

[grunting]

Hey! [sneezing]

I just remembered something. [sneezing]

Quartz can form from stuff

that comes out of volcanoes, like ash!

[sneezing]

But how does the wood turn to quartz?

Some of these trees will be buried

in layers of mud and ash.

[Jeremiah]: But they won't rot under there.

The tree's wood will soak up the minerals

dissolved in the mud and ash,

including quartz.

These minerals replace the wood and what's left is stone!

[others]: Whoa!

Now that we figured it all out, can we go back home?

[sneezing]

Certainly! The only problem is,

we have to gather around the exact tree

we were holding when we got here!

[Hal]: Hmm. Which one was it?

[all]: Petrified wood is the key to the past,

so take us back really fast!

Petrified wood is the key to the past,

so take us back really fast!

Okay, it looks like we're gonna be here for a while...

Can anyone remember anything about the tree?

[gasps] Wait a tick! I remember something

about the petrified wood Squeeks found.

It had little holes in it.

What made those holes?

[Daisy]: That's not important right now.

We just have to find the tree with holes in it

to get back home!

Right! Onward and holeward!

No holes here.

None here either.

None here either, neither, neither.

Hee-hee-hee! And I can't find any.

[giggling]

What's so funny, Nature Cat?

Something is tickling my feet.

Oh! Look at that!

There's a little prehistoric beetle crawling over my toes.

[Daisy]: Hey! It's heading for a tree!

[Nature Cat]: That beetle went into the hole!

I bet beetles made all these holes!

And more importantly, that must be our tree! Come on!

[all]: Petrified wood is the key to the past,

so take us back really fast!

It worked!

Tally-ho-ho-ho!

[screaming]

[wind gusting]

[all sighing]

We did it! We're back!

Nature Cat's back, alright!

We're home! Oh, yeah! We're home!

Now that we're back, can we go back to playing

some catch and fetch with regular wood? I like that.

To the woods!

[cheering]

Yes! Onward and catch-fetchward!

Uh, Nature Cat, this way!

Right! I know!

[Daisy]: Nature Buddy Clubhouse!

[Hal laughing]

Huggy, huggy, tree time, baby!

Ha-ha, yes!

And that was the last item on today's Nature Buddy agenda.

It's time to end this Nature Buddy meeting

with the Nature Buddy creed!

[all]: I am a Nature Buddy,

I love nature through and through.

I take care of all of nature.

And all of its treasures too!

I love the dirty dirt.

And the mud that is so muddy.

[all]: I promise that for all my life,

I shall be a Nature Buddy!

Nature, nature, hoo-hoo-ha-ha!

Woo! Whoa! I got excited there.

Alright, Nature Buddies, I have a surprise for everyone.

I, Nature Cat, have cleaned up the backyard!

[together]: Nature, nature, hoo-hoo-ha-ha!

Ha-ha! Oh, I did too many.

Wait, where did you put all the stuff that was laying

around the yard, Nature buddy Nature Cat, baby?

Why, I put it in this nifty shed, Nature Buddy Hal.

Soon, I'll take it all to the garbage dump

to toss it away!

Ahh!

Gah. Oops!

Let me just clean that up again. Ha-ha!

Wow! It's so great that you cleaned up the yard,

Nature buddy Nature Cat!

That's not even the best part, Nature Buddy Daisy.

Now that the yard is clear,

I have decided to build us a Nature Buddy Clubhouse!

[together]: Nature, nature, hoo-hoo-ha-ha!

What's gonna be in the Nature Buddy Clubhouse,

Nature Buddy Nature Cat? Hmm?

Glad you asked! I just happen to have drawn up a plan!

Ooh! Ooh! Show us your plan! Show you your plan!

Show everyone that plan!

[Nature Cat]: This is the reading nook,

here's the gardening centre,

this is the exercise area,

and this is the arts and crafts station!

Wow! This is going to be the bestest

Nature Buddy Clubhouse ever!

Nature, nature, hoo-hoo-ha-ha!

Let us build!

What do we have to do first, Nature Buddy Nature Cat?

Well, there are few things we need to shop for

from the store first.

What do we need to shop for?

I'm glad you asked, Nature Buddy Hal,

luckily I made a little list!

Ooh! Ooh! Show us your list! Show you your list!

Show everybody who will look at that list! Show it to them!

Sorry.

Huh. Do we really need all of that stuff?

It's not that much!

Now come on, Nature Buddies, onward and superstore-ward!

[light music]

Everybody ready for Operation Shopping Human?

Ready.

I'm ready.

Je suis prêt!

I'm practicing my French. No big deal.

Now come on and let's buy some stuff! Tally-human!

Ooh! We can use that for the arts and crafts station.

Say what?

That desk! We need to get that desk!

No, Hal, the other way!

[Hal]: Whoops!

The other, other way!

[Hal]: Ha-ha-ha! Sorry.

Okay, let's lift it.

[grunting] It's heavy!

Ah! Really heavy!

C'est difficile, as they say in Paris.

[grunting]

[all]: Whoa!

[grunting]

[shouting]

Hey! Careful of my cans!

Excuse me, fellow human,

which way to the art supplies?

[all]: Whoa!

Ooh! A Nature Buddy Clubhouse can always use some cat toys.

Grab them off the shelf, will you, Daisy?

But, Nature Cat, look! The cart is too full.

Nonsense, there's plenty of room.

There.

[all shouting]

[all]: Whoa!

Ahh! Stop that cart!

Other way, Hal!

The other, other way!

Faster, Hal!

Almost got it!

Ahh!

Ahh! [grunting]

Welp, we'd better load this stuff back into the cart

so we can buy it for our awesome Nature Buddy Clubhouse.

Wait, wait, wait. Maybe buying all of this stuff is a mistake.

Uh, why is it a mistake?

We're Nature Buddies and we promised

to take care of all of nature and all of its treasures too!

Right, but what does all this stuff have to do with nature?

Every single thing we're buying

is made by using things from nature.

No, no, no. You don't understand.

This is a desk. There are no desks in nature.

Okay, let me show you what I mean, Nature Cat.

This will show us what each thing is made from. Watch!

[computerized voice]: What's it made of?

Wood desk. This wood desk is made from...

[beeping]

...wood from trees.

Okay, that makes sense, actually.

But surely this can

isn't made out of anything from nature. May I?

[camera clicking]

This can is made from metals

that are found in the ground.

Really? Interesting.

Well, how about this plastic container?

There is no way...

Plastic is usually made from oil or gas.

That comes out of the ground, too.

Wow. I honestly did not see that coming.

Alright, so they're all made from things in nature.

But what's the big deal?

There's plenty of nature to go around!

Wait a minute. Wait a minute.

So, if we keep buying more and more stuff,

is nature gonna run out of the stuff we need

to make all that stuff? And then have no stuff?

It says here that there's only so much

of the things we take from nature, like oil and metal.

Once they're gone, they're gone.

You know, I don't think a good Nature Buddy

would buy all this stuff.

You're right, Nature Buddy Hal!

I guess we won't be making

our Nature Buddy Clubhouse after all.

Wait! Maybe there's still a way we can make the clubhouse.

[together]: How?

Mais comment? C'est ridicule.

Is this annoying? It is, isn't it? Okay.

My Granny Bunny taught it to me, it's called upcycling!

Oh! Great idea!

Let's cycle!

Not cycle, Hal! Upcycle!

I can do that too! Let's go up, cycle!

Wink, wink. [bicycle bell ringing]

While that is amazing, astounding,

and physically impossible to do,

that is not how you upcycle, Hal.

Oh.

So how do you upcycle?

Upcycling is taking an item that was used for one thing

and using it for something completely different

instead of throwing it in the trash.

Hey! I know where there's a shed full

of old things that were heading for the trash!

Well, maybe we can upcycle some of that!

Yes! Come on, Nature Buddies!

Let's go upcycle!

Uh, before we go, uh, should we tidy up?

Hey! Can we rewind this mess please?

[high-pitched chattering]

Thank you! Tally-ho!

Let's see what we got.

Ready to upcycle?

[all]: Nature, nature, hoo-hoo-ha-ha!

What should we build first?

Oh! Oh!

[Nature Cat]: Oof! How about this?

I really want to put in a trellis

for plants to climb up.

Okay, let's see what we can upcycle into a trellis!

Not this!

What about this headboard from an old bed?

Yes! Yes! This would be a perfect thing

to upcycle into a trellis!

Whoa, whoa, whoa! [thudding]

Hey! Maybe we can upcycle these cans into planters!

That's a fantastic idea!

[upbeat music]

Hey, Nature Buddies!

We just did our first upcycling!

[all]: Nature, nature, hoo-hoo-ha-ha!

[gasps] It was great!

I loved it. What's next?!

Hmm. Next, we need a bookshelf for the reading corner.

Ooh! Let's see what we can upcycle!

[door creaking]

Ahh!

[humming]

How about this surfboard?

I don't think that's quite right.

[humming] How about this ironing board?

I think we should keep looking.

[humming] How about this ladder?

This might be perfect!

[Daisy]: Wow! Upcycling really is a great way to save things

that were heading for the trash!

And it's fun too, also, even!

Come on, let's keep upcycling!

Peppy upcycling music please?

[upbeat music]

Wow!

[Hal]: Our Nature Buddy Clubhouse looks amazing!

And this is the most important part...

children at home watching...

We made the whole thing without taking anything from nature!

Isn't that wonderful?

Not to mention all the things we saved from the trash!

Woo-woo-woo-boo!

We sure are good upcyclers!

And good Nature Buddies!

Now come on,

let's enjoy our upcycled Nature Buddy Clubhouse!
