[Squeeks]: Living on the Edge.

[Nature Cat]: Ahh!

What a picture-perfect day

for the Lawn Bowling Championship!

And the lawn must be picture perfect as well!

Squeeks! How's the trimming coming along?

Ho, ho, choppingly!

Hi-ya! Ha! Hi-ya!

Sprinkler system activated in three, two, one,

now, baby!

[whirring]

Wonderful work, Hal!

[Nature Cat]: Daisy?

How's the getting rid of branches and sticks

coming along?

Sa-weet! Taking them to the curb for pickup!

Terrific! Tally-mow!

With these shrubs and tall grasses gone from the lawn,

no balls will be able to disappear now!

I give you: Nature Cat Coliseum!

The greatest lawn in the history of lawns!

And here is the greatest lawn bowler who has ever lived.

Bah-da-bah-da-ba-dah! Babs Ruth!

This is the game where she famously called her sh*t.

-Incredible! -Whoa!

Amazing!

Say, whatever happened to Babs Ruth anyway?

Nobody knows. It's a mystery.

[Raymond]: Ha! The only way you'll b*at my team,

the Mighty Ronalds,

is if Babs Ruth herself shows up

and plays on your team.

But everyone knows that will never happen! Haha!

Hello, Ronald.

Oh hello, Nature Cat.

I'll see you later for the championship.

-Whoa. -Say what?!

Ronald's good!

Hey! What are you doing?!

Why hello, Miss Cottontail Rabbit.

The name's Barbara, Mr. Cat-wearing-clothes.

Hey, Barbara, we're looking for a fifth for our team.

Do you know anyone who plays lawn bowling?

It's a grand old lawn game!

You rascals mowed over my habitat.

It was right here at the end of the yard.

You know, now would be the time of the show where I would say,

"Oh, a habitat? You mean one of those habitats,

but one question about a habitat, what is it?"

You know, that thing where I don't know,

but I do know what a habitat is,

it's a place where you make your home!

And now is the time I would say,

"Hal, you're a genius!"

Yeah, you can still say it, you know.

Hal, you're a genius!

Oh, you don't say, Daisy!

Thank you for saying that unprompted.

A habitat at the end of my yard?

'Tis not possible!

C'est impossible!

[Barbara]: 'Tis possible!

Then what, pray tell, kind of habitat is it?

An edge habitat.

Edge Habitat? Hmm. Never heard of that.

Mountain.

Desert.

Phew.

Ocean.

Meadow.

Forest.

Edge? [scoffs]

No offence, Barbara,

doesn't exactly roll off the tongue.

Maybe not, now that I'm hearing it,

but the edge is very important for myself

and so many other living things!

Huh. Tell us more, Barbara.

For us, and also for our curious

nature-loving viewers at home?

Hi, friends!

Happy to.

[clears throat] An edge habitat is an area

where one kind of habitat changes into another.

Here, it was the space between where your lawn ended

and the woods started.

It's called the edge, like U's guitarist,

and it's its own habitat!

[all]: Edge habitat!

And it's a place with lots of different plants

providing foods for lots of different kinds of animals.

Like the goldfinches that love the thistle seeds in fall

and migrating birds needing a place to refuel.

And all the shrubs and grasses offered safe spots for birds,

like cardinals, to build their nests.

Interesting. What else can you teach us,

and our viewers, about edge habitats? Wink, wink.

Well, now that you mention it,

animals like me had great places to hide

and find shelter, too. Where am I supposed to go now?

Man, oh man! We are so sorry.

Ah, it's okay. You didn't know.

But the problem is that these kinds of habitats

are disappearing everywhere.

It all adds up, you know?

Barbara, I and my lawn bowling buddies feel terrible!

But fear not, for I, Nature Cat,

promise that we shall restore the edge habitat for you

and make it even better than before!

Thank you. That would be swell.

Hmm. So what do we do now?

Hmm... Well, Barbara said that edge habitats

are disappearing so...

[dinging]

The Great Haldini is here

to make the edge habitat reappear!

Ooh!

I love the Great Haldini!

Abra-edge-a-ridium!

Come-back-ium!

[Nature Cat]: Uh, Hal, you just made us disappear, bud.

Now what?

Me thinks that was a noble attempt,

but me thinks again we must build back our edge habitat

for the plants and animals that live and visit there!

Me thinks.

These shrubs and grasses

should be perfect for animals to hide in.

Barbara will be so happy!

[leaves rustling]

Tah-dee! Check it out, Barbara,

the edge habitat we just built is so edge-y and habitat-y,

and all at the same time-y!

Well, what do you think? Pretty nice, huh?

I'm afraid this won't work at all.

Oh no. How come, Barbara?

The edge has to be wild and natural, just like nature.

You know, with plants that are real!

Huh. Point taken there.

Only when nature takes over

will some wild animals feel safe coming back to the edge.

I know exactly how to get wild plants and animals

back to the edge habitat. Check it!

the edge habitat to grow back?

Whoa! Check it out!

This has tips on building an edge habitat!

The first thing we need to do

is stop mowing this area so things can grow back.

There are other tips here too.

[all]: What do we gotta do?!

Well, we should draw a picture

of what our edge will look like.

[in French accent]: Oui, oui. I am ready!

What are we thinking?

The area should be about this wide.

Grasses, clover and wildflowers will grow here,

and that will give food and shelter for birds

and other animals.

Ah, oui, oui. The grass, yes...

Then we can add some native shrubs,

like blackberries and some small trees,

like crabapples and dogwoods.

Those will provide food for animals and places to nest.

Ah, the flowering plants, the blackberries,

the crapabbles, yes...

Oh, and let's add thick brush piles somewhere.

Those are piles of sticks, branches, twigs, and leaves.

Those will give cover for animals including rabbits,

like Barbara.

Et voilà!
