[phone ringing]

DR. DALTON [ON RECORDING]:
Hi. You're through to Leo Dalton.

Please leave a
message, or try my mobile.

Thanks.

[beep]

DSI Carter.

In here?

Yes, sir.

Oi.

It's pretty dark in here, son.

[beep]

[novelty ringtone ringing]

Dad, your phone.

Right.

I'd change the ring.

So uncool.

Leo Dalton.

Leo, it's Sam.

Where are you?

It sounds like a zoo.

I'm at the London eye.

I'm with Theresa and Cassie.

SAM RYAN [ON PHONE]:
Remember the Otty m*rder.

DR. DALTON [ON
PHONE]: Otty? Michael Otty?

SAM RYAN [ON PHONE]: Yes.

It's happened again.

Same place, same MO.

How are ya, Frank?

Sir.

Michael Otty?

Yes.

You've got to come
and see this, Leo.

It was your case.

I don't think I can.

I mean we're about to get on.

We don't have to get on now.

What are you getting on?

The London Eye.

So you don't want to see this?

Look.

I did book the days
out, remember.

OK.

Then, you just have
to trust me to cover it.

[theme music playing]

[radio chatter]

Professor Ryan.

[clatter]

Hey, what the bloody
hell are you playing at?

We need to preserve
the evidence,

not bloody well destroy it.

Sir.

DS PHILIP CARTER: Dear me.

Professor Ryan,
what a nice surprise.

I thought we were
having the new lad.

What's he called?

Leo Dalton, and he's
not so new anymore.

No.

But he did the other
one, didn't he? Otty?

Yeah.

But he's on holiday,
so you got me instead.

Oh.

Well, I suppose beggars
can't be choosers.

Eh, this is deja vu.

This is arrogant.

CASSIE: What's that
over there, the tall building?

THERESA: Um. I'm not sure.

Leo.

Leo?

Sorry.

OK?

Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.

What did they want?

Oh, a body's turned up.

What sort of body?

Never you mind.

Has somebody been m*rder*d?

Cassie, drop it.

I was only asking.

Do you need to go in?

No. Not really.

You can if you want.

We can amuse ourselves.

I could come with you.

Only I'm not going in.

Come on.

You're only here for a few days.

They can do without me.

You weren't on the
Otty case, were you?

No. That'd be Charles.

But he's retired.

There are two pieces of rope.

One is wound
around the neck linked

to another, which is
looped around the wrists

and joined to a leather
belt around the ankles.

This has rendered the
victim totally immobile.

The absence of any blood
on the lips, appearance

of mucus on the upper
lip, which appears

to have come from the
nostrils, and bloodshot eyes

gives the first impression
of the victim as asphyxiated.

Upper torso is naked,
and there appears

to be a burn mark on the back.

No other marks are
distinguishable in this light.

How long has he been here?

I can't be accurate.

Not long, maybe a day.

Do you have a name for him?

No.

Not yet.

Serial k*ller?

It's possible.

I've had identical
methods before,

but never k*lling them
in the same place.

I don't think he
was k*lled in there.

No?

There were small
pieces of wood embedded

in the soles of his feet.

That place is all concrete.

Right.

[phone ringing]

Hello.

Oh, hi, Sam.

Would you mind if I took a look
at the Michael Otty file tonight?

Tonight?

Well, it's a bit late, isn't it?

Well, I don't have
any other time.

I'm out at Hatfield College
first thing in the morning.

Oh, OK.

It's somewhere in the
admin office as far as I know.

Yeah.

OK.

Bye.

[beep]

What you reading?

Stephen King, "Pet Cemetery."

Don't blame me.

I've tried.

It's what she likes.

Here.

Thanks.

Oh, it looks like
I'm going to have

to go in tomorrow after all.

It's a m*rder, isn't it?

They don't know what it is yet.

They wouldn't call you in the
middle of the night if it wasn't.

Well, if you have to
go in, you have to go in.

We can do some shopping.

You said I could go with Dad.

When?

I'm sure you did.

She can come if she wants.

You'll probably end
up getting a bit bored.

Or I might end up
seeing a dead body.

No.

You won't.

So can I go?

[sigh] OK.

If you want.

I've asked you once, sir.

Now, I don't want to have to
ask you again, get out of the car.

Why?

Because I asked you to.

You freakin' deaf or something.

Don't talk to me like that.

Hey, just get out
of the car, will you?

Not until you tell me what for.

All right.

Lippy one here, aren't we?

Yeah.

And you're riding up it.

Get out!

Come on.

Get out of the car. Get out!

Get out!

Right.

Want some of this, pal?

Hey.

Get out!

Hold it!

Hold it.

Ever heard of excessive force?

He wouldn't get
out of the car, sarge.

That doesn't mean
you can go in there

and kick three bells out of him.

The rest of you, what
should he have done?

Hit me first.

Ask questions later.

Yeah. Very funny.

Excessive force,
Day, definition.

Definition of excessive force.

I don't think we better.

Why?

You know what she's like.

If the place fell down around
her, she wouldn't wake up.

I've got to get to work.

The sooner I get there,
the sooner I'll be back.

OK.

OK.

I think we should stop it there.

Can anybody tell me
what's gone wrong?

Yeah.

He didn't check
the walk to the body.

Exactly.

When you're entering
a crime scene,

it's really important not
to destroy any evidence.

These pieces of
paper could prove

to be totally insignificant,
but on the other hand,

they may yield
something very vital.

So next to the body,
what do you see?

A glass of water.

Is that all?

Could it be poisoned?

It could be.

So don't drink it.

More importantly,
at this stage, there

are two ice cubes in this water.

What does that tell us?

Someone was thirsty.

That the crime was
committed very recently.

Maybe our victim here went
and got himself a drink of water

just before the
assailant struck.

Or perhaps someone came
through the door with a glass of water,

just before PC Bushell
arrived here on the scene.

So this is actually going to be
very important in determining

a number of things for us.

Next week, I want to show
you how all these factors can

fit into my role as a
forensic pathologist,

but in the meantime, does
anyone have any questions?

Thanks for doing
this again, Sam?

It's my pleasure.

I really do believe it
puts the whole thing

into perspective for them.

It's the least I can do.

MAN: Bravo Charlie
One from Bravo India Five.

I noticed a PC Alex
Dyer in the class.

Is he any relation?

He's my son.

Oh, following in
father's footsteps, eh?

It was his decision, not mine.

Does it make it difficult
for you, him being here?

No. Not for me.

Though it may do for him.

He's a good lad though.

He's a natural copper.

What's a natural copper?

Well, let's put it this way.

When he was at university,
he made a citizen's arrest.

There were two armed
muggers robbing an old man.

Took them both on and
held them till help arrived.

He just can't seem
to help himself.

Sounds like a chip
off the old block.

I wouldn't know about that.

Well, I would.

You're always one step ahead.

I'll see you next week.

OK.

- Bye.
- Goodbye.

All right.

I'm off to the studio.

I’ll see you tonight.

They found another body.

Who has?

The police. They
found another body.

In the power station, same
place they found Michael's.

In the same place?

Well, that's weird.

Very.

Well, it's got to be
the same person that

k*lled Michael, hasn't it?

Otty's m*rder, was what?

About four, five months ago.

Cause of death, asphyxiation,
belt around the neck.

He'd also be tied
up by two other belts,

and there was a strange
burn on his back too.

Leo thought he might
have been branded.

Nobody ever really
worked that out though.

Who discovered the body?

Security firm.

They keep a check on the
place every couple of days.

Some company's
bought it, hoping to turn it

into a leisure complex.

Otty's half-brother,
Thomas Baldwin,

he was in the frame for a while.

What was the motive?

That was the problem.

He didn't really have one.

Him and his wife
had a rock solid alibi.

They were both at the opening of
one of her exhibitions, Sarah Baldwin.

Some sort of artist.

You ever been to
one of those openings?

Easy to get cornered,
forgotten about.

Meaning?

No one could have had their eye

on them both, not all night.

There you go.

I know a great
book you could read.

"Wuthering Heights."

Read it.

Really?

And did you enjoy it?

It was all right.

I was waiting for someone to get
disemboweled on the Moors though.

[knock]

DR. DALTON: Yep.

What are you doing here?

The autopsy.

I thought I should be here.

And Theresa went
shopping, and Cassie

wanted to see where I work.

Cassie, this is Professor Ryan.

CASSIE: Hi.
- Hello.

The body is white,
male, in his mid-20s.

Appears to be in good
physical condition.

It's the same as Otty, yeah?

Same age, but not in
prime physical condition.

Weighed less than 10 stone.

Bruising to the left cheek.

[camera clicks]

And to the right jaw,
consistent with him being struck.

Otty had bruising to the
right-hand side of his face.

Friction burn on the neck,
probably caused by the rope.

Could you turn him please?

Yeah.

Otty was secured
in the same way.

Only there was no rope
used, just three belts.

If it is the same
person or persons,

I wonder why they
changed to rope.

Run out of belts, yeah.

Dear, oh dear.

Friction burn continues
around the back of the neck

with a break of
approximately four centimeters.

That's different to Otty.

The friction mark from the
belt went all the way around.

Otty was strangled.

This person was more than
likely hanged with the rope

coming around
the back of the neck

and coming away
as it became taught.

DI McArdle.

There's a circular burn mark
in the centre of the back with

some kind of
markings like lettering.

Yeah.

That's the same as Otty's.

Mhm.

There are four small
pieces of wood embedded

in the sole of the right
foot, and again in the left foot

two small pieces of wood.

Otty had metal
splinters in his feet.

We never worked out
where they might come from.

Not from the trees,
that's for sure.

Got a possible ID on the body.

Jason Villers.

Tell us more.

He was a probationary constable

at Hatfield Training College.

Otty was 24.

Villers was 25.

And the MO is nearly identical.

Except Otty wasn't
a police officer.

No, a student, an art student.

And you say Sarah
Baldwin was an artist.

That's right.

I think she taught
him for a while.

Villers' mother is on
her way in to identify him.

Thanks.

Do you know anything
about the rope they used?

No.

Nothing as yet.

Still looking into it.

The ends were
frayed, but that's all.

I think the belt was his.

There was an extra
hole punched into it,

making it a perfect fit for him.

I keep wondering why they didn't

use three belts on
Villers like the original.

Well, what if it isn't a
copycat m*rder but a m*rder

committed by the same person.

You mean that they made
small changes deliberately

to make it look like copycat?

Then, there's got
to be a connection

between Otty and Villers.

Well, maybe Villers
was interested in art.

Did Sarah Baldwin
teach him as well?

Who knows?

Let's find out.

What about the belts
that were used on Otty?

Bought from Burton's.

Dealers were a bit sketchy,
but we don't think they were

Otty's.

[mobile phone ringing]

Mhm.

Well, see what you can learn,

and I want Thomas and
Sarah Baldwin in for a DNA test.

It seemed we had
a lot to go on Otty,

what with the burns and the
belts and the way he was found.

But nothing seemed to turn up.

No girlfriend or
anything for Villers?

DI McArdle's on his
way down to Hatfield now.

See what he can
glean on that score.

I'm over there next week.

What for?

SAM RYAN: A lecture on
the role of forensic pathology.

Well, you'll be one
student light now.

So you were
saying, Jason Villers

was one of your probationers.

Yeah.

Did he have any problems, anyone

he didn't see eye to eye with?

Not that I know of.

If they do have
problems, it's usually

their trainer they come to.

What was he like as a person?

All right.

Outgoing?

Reserved? Thick?

What?

He wasn't the class
extrovert, but he

was no shrinking violet either.

Popular?

Not unpopular.

Well, there must
have been something.

Not that I know of.

Who did he socialize with?

As far as I can tell,
he was part of a group.

That's what usually happens.

They split into groups
of three, four, five.

What about outsiders?

Any trouble there?

No.

You seem unsure.

No.

I'm not unsure.

No trouble there.

Come on.

Rigor mortis is like when the
body goes really stiff, isn't it?

Yep.

But doesn't that
make it hard to cut up?

Actually, you really
don't need to know this.

I do if I'm going
to be a pathologist.

Excuse me a minute.

Harry.

Hi.

I thought it was.

Steph Pinson, John's wife.

Of course, sorry.

It's OK.

It's been a while.

Hm.

Do you have a minute?

Uh, yeah.

Sure.

Sorry about this.

I'm not important enough
to have my own office.

How are you?

How's John?

That's what I wanted
to talk to you about.

Is something wrong?

He d*ed last night.

Oh my God.

It was a terrible shock.

They... they called
me from work to tell me.

How?

He slipped.

Fell down, hit his head.

I'm really sorry.

I can't believe it.

I mean, it's unbelievable.

You know, there he is, and...

[scoffs] It seems two
minutes since we were at uni.

Look, um, do you want to
get a drink or something?

No.

I'm OK. Thanks.

Look.

The reason I came to see you
was because I need you to do him

and me a favor.

Hm?

Because he d*ed like
he d*ed in an accident,

they're going to have
to do a post-mortem.

Yeah. Of course, yeah.

I know this may be impossible,
and just say no if it is,

but could you do it?

It would make me feel...

I don't know.

That he was in safe hands.

I don't see why not.

Thanks.

That wasn't an
att*ck, you big p*ssy.

Next time really go for him.

Come on.

Up.

How well did you know him?

Same as everybody else.

Had a drink with
him now and then.

Did you get on with him?

Yeah.

Is there anything you
can tell us about him?

No.

Nothing.

Does the name Michael
Otty mean anything to you?

No.

Nothing.

INSTRUCTOR: Come on.

A little bit better than that.

For Christ sake,
you lot watching this?

You've got to do
this in a second.

Up.

At it again.

What's this lot doing here?

I've decided to
give up the studio.

Give up the studio?

I'm going to try to
find somewhere else.

I thought you loved the studio.

I did.

It's just I haven't really
used it since Michael d*ed.

I can't seem to settle there.

This some artistic thing?

No.

It's this body turning up
where Michael was found.

It's brought it all back to me.

Brought what all back?

Me working with Michael.

I can't be there anymore.

What have you done to your hand?

I did it finishing
that commission.

I was so behind I was rushing.

I just wanted to get
out of that studio.

And the police are
on their way around.

They want to ask us
some more questions.

So I'm coming at
you with a Kn*fe,

what's the first thing you do?

Run.

[laugh] This is serious.

It could save your life.

He was one of the lads.

We'd have a few pints
most nights, usually

after a good session here.

He was keen on keeping fit.

Did he have a girlfriend?

Not... not that I know of.

You shared a room
with him, didn't you?

Yeah.

DC MCARDLE: And what were
your first impressions of him?

He was a straight sort of bloke.

Seemed decent enough to me.

Can't think who'd
want to do this to him?

Now, what was that?

I could have stuck you
like a pig if I had wanted to.

Alex.

ALEX DYER: Yes, Sarge.

Those two muggers you're so
famous for, were they armed?

Yes, Sarge.

With knives.

Show me what you did.

Go on, Alex.

Go on.

They swung and came at me.

[grunt]

[applause]

The position of the
bone is not identical,

and the markings, I
think, slightly different.

But more importantly,
I would have

said that Otty's burn
was ante-mortem.

See this red mark around here.

Hm.

And Villers' is post-mortem.

Yeah.

I think I'll get a
burns expert in.

Take a look at these.

Right.

[knock]

Yeah.

There's a Gabby
Langton downstairs.

I can't get rid of her.

Says she's come to see
the body of Jason Villers.

[panting]

Thanks.

The body's already been
identified by his mother.

I really can't let you see him.

But I need to.

Maybe later on, the
family might let you.

Why can't I see him now?

I'm afraid I can't.

I won't believe he's
dead until I see him.

Were you his girlfriend?

Jason and me, we...

We... we had this um...

We had this thing.

We... oh... not very good for
a would-be police officer, is it?

I should be able to hold
myself together better than this.

He is dead, isn't he?

[sob] It should never
have happened.

It should never have happened.

Can you bring him
through now please?

No. I liked him a lot.

Yeah.

He was the sort of
bloke you could really

count on in a corner, you know.

I tell you if I ever
get my hands

on whoever did this I think
I'd find it very difficult to play

it by the book.

OK.

Thanks.

I don't know if this
is of any relevance.

What?

There was a bit of
aggro at the local pub.

When?

Villers involved?

Yeah.

Who was the aggro with?

Look.

I'd rather not name names.

Who was it?

Well, there was a set-to
between one of the locals

and an officer
from this college.

And what happened?

There was a bit of verbal.

About?

The local was
saying certain things

about the honesty of
serving police officers if you

get my drift.

And the police
officer didn't hold back

about what he thought.

A bit later, the officer
went to the gents.

The local followed, and
it all got a bit physical.

Who was the officer?

Sergeant Allen.

DC MCARDLE: And you
think this has got something

to do with the death
of Jason Villers?

Yeah.

Well, Sergeant
Allen was getting a bit

repasting until Jason Villers
went in and sorted the man out.

Sorted him out?

Had dislocated shoulder.

He needed a few
stitches above his eye

where Jackson nutted him.

Personally, I believe the
man got what he deserved.

A large circular bruise on
the right side of the chest

and around the stomach area.

Plus a small bruise
approximately four centimeters

by two on the right forearm.

This may have happened when
he was trying to protect himself

during the fall.

It appears that the
bruising around the stomach

has central puncture marks.

It looks like the deceased has
been injected a number of times

around that area.

There are similar puncture
mark in the groin area,

and in the thigh area.

Again on the tops
of the feet, there

are similar puncture
marks, indicating

that the person has been injecting
intravenously for some time.

When did you last see him?

A couple of years ago.

He'd just been made MD
at some marketing company.

A high flier.

The last person you'd
have thought would...

He could have been a diabetic.

Don't think so.

Well, let's wait and see what
the toxicology report turns up.

You mustn't jump to conclusions.

I'm going to have to report
it as a suspicious death.

Of course.

What am I going
to tell his wife?

She must have known.

It's not the sort of thing you
could hide from a partner, is it?

You said in the statement
you gave at the time

that you were attending the
opening of an art exhibition

on the night your
brother disappeared.

That's right.

How long were you there for?

A few hours.

Probably five or six.

And you were
together all of that time?

Well, no, of course not.

But there are
plenty of people who

will tell you we were there.

And when you got home,
Michael wasn't here?

That's right.

Why didn't you
report him missing?

He was a student.

They come and go as they please.

Quite a big age
difference between you

and your brother, Mr. Baldwin.

He was my stepbrother.

My mother remarried.

But you were close?

He moved in here
when our mother d*ed.

And he never mentioned
a Jason Villers to you?

No.

Right.

That's about it.

Thanks for your time.

Oh, there was one other thing.

Um.

Would you mind
giving a DNA sample

for the purposes of elimination?

Sure.

Thanks.

This is interesting.

It's one of mine.

I thought you were a painter.

I do odd bits of sculpting too.

Hm.

It's good.

Sergeant Allen's inside
waiting to be questioned.

Mhm.

And what do we know about him?

Been in the job 18 years,
not a mark against him.

Applied to be a trainer
after he got divorced.

This is his first
intake of probationers.

They have the passing out
dinner in just under a week.

And how is he fairing?

By all accounts, he's very good.

Students like him, and
so does the commandant.

Right.

I didn't report it.

No.

Why not?

I just didn't.

You just didn't.

What if this bloke
with a big mouth

had gone down to the local nick,
put in a complaint against you?

It wouldn't have
been against me.

Well, who would it
have been against?

PC Villers.

He's the one that gave
him the hammering.

So you kept stone
to protect Villers?

That's right, sir.

You didn't hit this
man at all then?

I didn't get the chance.

He came at me from behind.

So Villers was the only
one who made contact?

Yeah.

With his head.

I was surprised.

Why?

He wasn't the most
enthusiastic student.

In what way?

He's what I call
a reluctant bobby.

He'd have been better
placed in the social services.

Do we have a name
of this nutter he nutted?

No.

Well, I'd never seen him before.

Well, I'll tell you
what, bonnie lad,

you better give a good
description in your statement,

because at the moment,
he's our only suspect.

[crunch]

I don't want them having my DNA.

It's an invasion of my rights.

SARAH BALDWIN: It just
makes it easier for them.

No.

I'm going to move this
lot to the spare room.

What's this doing here?

I thought we might hang
it somewhere in the house.

I don't want to sell it.

Why not?

That was the last thing
Michael did before he d*ed.

And you want to hang it in
our house, a painting of you

in the nude done by him?

You've got a nerve.

What are you talking about?

You know exactly
what I'm talking about.

You know exactly!

Thomas, what the hell
is the matter with you?

You know!

You know!

Steph, something came
up during the autopsy.

Uh, seems that John
was injecting intravenously.

Did you know?

The thing is,
what I haven't told

you is that John and I had
separated about six months ago.

It was a mutual thing.

Growing apart.

If we'd stayed together,
we would have ended up

biting lumps out of each other.

But it was better for me.

I was much happier.

And John?

He wanted me back.

But it would never have worked.

So the injecting thing?

I didn't know.

No idea what he
might have been using?

No.

Sorry.

Mrs. Baldwin.

That's right.

Thanks for coming in.

I'm afraid my husband
couldn't make it this morning.

He's had to go off somewhere.

Oh, we can make another
appointment for him.

It doesn't take very long.

Someone will be along shortly,
and then we'll go through.

I hurt my hand.

Is it going to be a problem?

No.

Is it bad?

I was sculpting this
figure, over 10 foot.

I got behind.

Is it a commission?

Yeah.

Corporate art.

Adelphi Leisure.

Oh, right.

Where the hell have you been?

I've been worried sick.

I don't think so.

Thomas, what's
the matter with you?

This.

This is what's the
matter with me?

Michael's painting.

Of you.

- Yes.
- Naked.

Naked, yes.

I suppose you posed
for it in here, did you?

You in here, naked.

What's wrong with that?

He's an artist.

And when he
finished painting you,

I suppose you just got your
clothes and came home, did you?

Came home to me.

- Yes.
- Don't lie to me.

- Get off!
- I know you.

Get off!

You and my brother.

- You...
- No!

You and my brother.

Listen to me.

Listen.

No.

Bitch.

Michael was doing the
painting for you as a present.

It was for you.

Had he complained of
dizziness or anything?

No. Nothing.

He was on good form.

Mm.

Oh, I don't know
if I can do this.

It just looks like
he's sleeping.

Will you stay with me?

If you want me to.

GABBY LANGTON: I
don't want to talk about it.

What's the matter with you?

One minute, you hate him.

The next, you're acting like
you've lost your best friend.

I just need to know
what happened.

Nobody knows.

Nobody cares after what he did.

Just stop it then.

Stop it.

You don't know anything.

What the hell is going
on in your head, Gabby?

It doesn't matter.

Look.

If there's something eating
you, please just tell me.

You can't go on like this.

I lied to you, Ben.

I lied to you.

I'm so sorry.

Tell me the truth!

Admit it!

MICHAEL OTTY: We
haven't done anything.

Liar!

Michael was doing
the painting for you.

THOMAS BALDWIN
[VOICEOVER]: Liar!

Liar!

Tell me the truth.

Tell me the truth!

It was for you.

We haven't done anything.

Liar!

SARAH BALDWIN [VOICEOVER]:
It was a present for you, Thomas.

Liar! Liar!

[car accelerating]

BOTH: Slap!

[giggle]

Yeah.

Yeah. OK.

Yeah. Bye.

What was that?

Work.

I've got to go in again.

Look. I'll be one hour.

Two at the most.

THERESA: You've got to go now?

Yeah. I'm afraid so.

OK.

Well, you better go then.

DR. DALTON: Thanks.

Can I come again?

No.

Look. I'll be as quick as I can.

It must've been
a massive impact.

It feels as if the sternum
has been crushed,

and it looks as if
he's got a flail chest.

Thanks.

SAM RYAN: There's no
bruising on either shoulder.

Probably wasn't wearing
a seat belt at the time.

No damage to the face or neck.

There's a couple of pieces of
silvery grey material in the hair.

Do you think they
could be metal?

It is metal.

These are like the splinters
we found in Otty's feet.

The wife been informed, has she?

DS PHILIP CARTER: Yes, boss.

Theresa must be
getting fed up of you

having to come in all the time.

She's fine about it.

More forgiving than me?

Hm.

Right.

Let's have a word with her.

We need to speak
to Sarah Baldwin.

Yes, I know.

She makes
sculptures out of metal.

I saw one at her house.

She's just been commissioned
by the company who

bought the building the
bodies were found in.

Oh dear.

Mrs. Baldwin, I
understand you don't want

to see your husband's body.

Well, we will need
someone to identify him.

It's him.

I know it's him.

Mrs. Baldwin, we
found little bits of metal

in your husband's hair.

We also found similar bits
of metal in Michael Otty's feet.

Did you know that?

No.

We believe it's a
possibility that they

both came from your studio.

What do you think?

You know what happened.

Don't you?

We have a good idea.

Thomas, um...

Look.

You've got it all wrong.

SARAH BALDWIN
[VOICEOVER]: found a painting.

A painting of me.

A nude.

Michael was doing it for him.

Thomas got it all wrong.

He thought we
were having an affair.

So it was Thomas.

I'd done it before.

Had an affair once.

Thomas found out.

It was stupid, some student.

I always regretted it.

I wish I was dead.

So he att*cked his own brother?

Well, he wanted
Michael Otty to confess

to their relationship, but
he couldn't, because there

was nothing to confess to.

Well, did they make any sense
of the burn mark on his back.

Yeah.

It was from a
stove in the studio.

And where does this leave
the Jason Villers' m*rder?

With the police still
looking for a motive.

See you.

[sultry music playing]

John was always under pressure.

And the NHS isn't?

Different sort of pressure.

He had the resources,
and he had to deliver.

We don't have the resources,
so we do what we can.

Do you think that's the
reason he started sh**ting up?

It takes the edge off things.

[scoffs]

Better make a move.

So soon?

I've got these exams.

Have a night off.

Go on.

I'd really like you to.

You know people will
talk if they find out I'm here.

I don't care.

I loved John, but it
was well and truly over.

Right. Yeah.

Bye.

Westlake's tracked
down the fella

that Allen and Villers
had the fight with.

And?

Local face, Adrian Fincher.

Got rock solid alibi for
the night Villers was k*lled.

sh*t.

He was on a stag
night in Tenerife.

Oh. Blah.

According to Westlake,
he was pissed off

about the fight in the
pub, but coming up

with an elaborate plot
to do away with Villers

and make it look like
another m*rder, nah.

[sigh]

You get the feeling we might
be looking closer to home?

Oh, I bloody well hope not.

Problem?

I thought John Pinson might have
heroin in his bloodstream, but no.

He was clean then?

I wouldn't say that.

Something else?

Yeah.

Dihydrocodeine, DF118s.

Really?

By the shedload.

That's a bit different.

Bet he wasn't in any pain.

Yeah.

Might explain why he fell.

He was as high as a kite.

Chris, have John Pinson's
belongings been collected yet?

Sacco's going through them now.

OK.

Thanks.

Steph Pinson.

Steph, it's Harry.

STEPH PINSON [ON PHONE]: Hi.

Sorry I didn't say goodbye
properly this morning.

That's OK.

Can we meet tomorrow?

Yeah.

Where and when?

Your place, about 6:00.

All right.

OK.

See you then.

Where's Mum?

Bathroom.

So what do you fancy
doing tonight, huh?

Are you coming with us?

Of course.

You don't have
to go to work then?

No.

Then, let's see
some more of London.

OK.

You better let Mum know.

Why?

Because she was thinking that
we could go and meet some friend.

A friend?

What friend?

Some guy from work.

Well, what's he doing in London?

I don't know.

So where's Gabby?

She hasn't shown.

Don't know.

You two fallen out?

It's beginning to look that way.

What's her problem?

I'm not sure.

It has to do Jason Villers.

She can't be upset he's dead.

You would have thought so.

Well, hadn't you
better find out what it is?

Yeah.

Because if you don't, I will.

We've got less than a week
before our passing out dinner.

I don't want
anything to ruin that.

OK. I'll talk to her.

SAM RYAN: I'm on my
way to Hatfield College now.

Richard Dyer is bound to want to
talk to me about the Jason Villers' case.

Is there anything I
should or shouldn't say?

DS PHILIP CARTER
[ON PHONE]: No. No.

Say what you want?

Villers seemed a straight
enough sort of guy.

Most people liked him.

Didn't have a girlfriend, but
it's odds on he was hetero.

SAM RYAN [ON
PHONE]: No girlfriend?

What about Gabby Langton,

the girl who wanted
to see his body?

DS PHILIP CARTER: Well,
that's first I've heard of it.

If she was his girl, it's news
to me and everybody else.

PC Gabby Langton,
I'd like to speak to her

before I start my lecture.

Any idea where I'd find her?

[water running]

It's just around the corner.

Through there.

Third door on the left.

Thank you.

Hello.

Hello.

[knocking]

[theme music playing]
