02x18 - Take Me Out to the Fashion Show

Post by bunniefuu »

Don't worry. I'll be there.

Great news!

The local baseball team wants me

to throw out the ceremonial first pitch

tonight.

What do you mean I can't?

Oh, that's right.

In minutes, I'm flying with my person to Germany

for Helga's birthday party.

Helga's my famous fashion designer cousin.

If I don't go to her party, she'll never forgive me.

Use my Ruff Ruffman walkabout costume?

Of course.

Hire someone to wear a Ruff Ruffman costume

to throw out the first pitch

while the real me hoofs it to Helga's birthday party.

You go find me an actor to be me.

Lucky I already ordered

a costume from discountmascots.com.

I haven't seen it yet, but I'm sure it'll look just like me.

I'll go look for something fancy to wear to Helga's party.

Now, where is that dry-cleaning service?

I left my clothes out for the cleaners

to pick up the same day I put my trash out.

so let's get over

Hi, are you Steven?Hey, Michael.

How are you doing, buddy?

I'm good. Ruff gave me a call.

I was a pitcher in the Chicago Cubs organization

for three years,

and today we're actually going to be going through

some of the routines that I did as a professional pitcher.

I'm going to pitch? You're going to pitch.

You ready? Let's go.Yeah.

RUFF: You're going to save my reputation.

Don't you have to have a strong arm to pitch?

You have to have a strong arm,

but really, the most important thing for a pitcher is

having a strong lower body

and having flexible limbs

and having a good, strong core.

We're going to go through our stretching routine.

The first thing-- I'm going to have you touch

your toes now, and then at the end

of the stretches, I want you to touch your toes again

and see if you can't go down a little bit farther.

The reason why pitchers stretch

is because they want to increase their range of motion.

Oh, yeah, I know about that.

Stretching lengthens your muscles and then

you can move your arms and legs further without getting hurt.

You feel good?

Yep.All right, let's see how far you can go down.

Ooh. I think he's gaining flexibility.

I could sort of touch my toes... if I could see them.

Another thing that's really important

that major league pitchers do when they come to the ballpark

each day is they do a little bit of agility.

This is an agility ladder

and what it does is it trains the body

for those expl*sive movements

that you're going to be doing when you get on the mound.

The key is to see how fast you can get through.

Wow, Mike does it well.

Good job. Want to go work on our pitching?

Yeah. All right, let's go to the mound.

I love a challenge that starts off with a dog.

Hi, are you Angelia? Are you Angelia?

I am. Hello, how are you?

Good, how are you?I'm good.

The three of you are going to be fashion designers.

Oh, that's so cool.

Your challenge is

to design a custom-tailored outfit for your model.

Do you want to go meet your models?

Wait till they see who the models are.

Put these blindfolds on.

Uh-oh. All right?

Oh, dear.

[screaming]: There's a bush.

This is a couch?

ANGELIA: You can take your blindfolds off.

KIDS: Oh!

Who did you think I was going to get?

Heidi Klum?

So let me introduce you.

Bridget, this is Murphy.

He'll be your model for the day.

Rosario, this is Zoe.

And Madi, that is Libby.

You know, I tried getting into modeling.

It didn't work out, probably because I'm not tall enough.

I guess you figured out

that you're designing clothes for dogs.

Your dogs are so cool.

So I'm going to hand out tape measures.

The best place for your tape measure is around your neck,

so you always have it handy on you.

These are special Project Ruffway

doggie spec sheets.

Ruff made these up for us,

and we're going to measure

each dog.

This would be called a fitting.

The back of the neck, which is here, and the tail,

and then go around.

BRIDGET: and a half.

Stay still, Libby.

RUFF: Models are difficult to work with; you should have seen

the stuff we had to have in the green room for these dogs.

MADI: Okay, under the chest, behind the top legs. Yeah.

. So it looks like we're done

with all of our measurements,

so let's go, let's start designing.

[inhales deeply]

There.

Waiting on the mound is

Justin, a pitcher for the Lowell Spinners.

Hey, Justin. Hey.

Justin's going to throw a fastball and we're going to see

how science is put to work.

Wait, there's science in pitching?

Well, actually, I'm going to be throwing a four-seam fast ball.

When you take a look at the ball,

you have one, two, three, four seams--

are going to help get the ball off your fingertips.

So you're saying that the way you orient the seams

has something to do with how the ball moves?

Exactly. All right, let's see how a professional does it.

A four-seam fast ball.

Whoa!

I barely saw that.

MIKE: Why is the fastball hard to hit?

RUFF: 'Cause it's fast?

STEVEN: Justin is '".

He's pitching from an elevated mound of ten inches.

And so he's throwing the ball across home plate at an angle,

as well as Justin's throwing pretty hard.

But the fastball isn't the only pitch in baseball

that's difficult to hit.

Justin throws a slider.

And the slider is difficult to hit because

of the spin that's put on the baseball.

When you throw a baseball, there's air resistance.

The ball has to travel from the pitcher's hand

to the catcher's glove, through the air.

And when you add a little bit of spin to the pitch,

that manipulates how the ball actually moves through the air.

Justin's going to show us how he throws the slider.

In baseball terms, we call this the horseshoe.

And so I take my two fingers and put it inside the horseshoe,

putting my middle finger right there on the seams.

Then I put my thumb on the bottom seam.

And how I throw my slider,

it's almost like snapping my fingers

and get a nice spin.

RUFF: Okay, there is science involved here.

By spinning the ball, Justin changes

how the air flows around it, and that makes it curve.

Okay, let's make sure I got my grip.

I could snap my fingers.

I just, you know...

ANGELIA: We are here in front of Sara Campbell.

This is a real working design studio.

There's a store up front.

But in the back, pattern tables, sewing machines,

fabric, the works.

And this is where we're going to be working.

RUFF: There's no eyes on that dog!

...dog mannequins for you to work on.

So your four criteria:

You need to be creative.

Number two, you need to be original.

It needs to be different. It needs to come from you.

Your third criteria is it needs to be functional.

Can the dogs walk in it? Are they comfortable?

And it needs to be well-made.

So those are the four things that you need to keep in mind

when designing and making outfits.

When you're designing, you have to think about

what fabrics you're going to be using.

A dog wouldn't really want to wear another animal.

RUFF: No, you wouldn't want to wear another person.

MADI: Is this real?

It's not.Okay.

Dogs aren't always comfortable in every fabric.

Because I'll put Toby in...

He's got a winter puffer coat,

and he just won't walk in it.

I'll give him a little... nothing.

You have to think about the functionality,

which is one of the criteria.

So let's get to sketching.

Take all your fabrics to your sketchbook.

RUFF: Ooh, a vest. I like vests.

Make me look snazzy.

ANGELIA: Okay, so let's go over your sketches.

I made a vest, a T-shirt and a hat.

Maybe I could do that with a boa.Looks good.

BRIDGET: I was thinking of doing

this coat, like that design,

and that would be this leaf material.

I'm going to have this as the collared shirt.

RUFF: Oh, purple is my favorite color.

And this is going to be under.

So the little sleeves will be sticking out

of the short sleeve. Okay.Yeah. Yeah.

And then, I'm gonna have a shirt and hat with, like,

an Abraham Lincoln type thing.

Yeah, like, top hat.Yeah, top hat.

What do you think of this?

Ew, that bad, huh?

I hope that hair ball was a coincidence.

Michael, now we're going to talk about

the biomechanics of the pitching delivery itself.

Biomechanics.

That's "bio" meaning biography and "mechanics" meaning,

uh, people who fix cars.

What?

Oh, it's the study of movements and forces of the body.

Whoops. [chuckles]

Thank you, Blossom.

The reason why studying biomechanics

of pitching delivery is important is because

you're transferring energy from your lower half of the body

through your core, to the upper half of your body.

And that's how velocity is developed.

RUFF: Velocity. That's how fast the ball's going.

STEVEN: There's essentially five steps

in a pitching motion.

The first step is the rocker step.

With the rocker step, all we're really trying to do is

keep your upper body centered over your lower body, okay?

And we're going to transition into the balance position,

which is the next stage of the pitching motion.

The key about the balance

is keeping your chest centered over your body,

so that you're not falling forward or falling backward.

Okay.Continue out into the stride.

The key is to stride about % of your height.

With the elbow in the back, shoulder height,

and you're throwing the baseball.

RUFF: Wait, you're going to throw your glove?

From the stride position, we're rotating the hips;

we're releasing the baseball right out in front.

Notice how he's releasing the baseball

way out in the fingertips out in front of his body.

And the fifth and final stage is the follow-through.

And all the follow-through does is

decelerate the arm to prevent injury.

Okay.All right?

How's this?

No? What about this?

No good? Huh.

Hi, Ruff Ruffman here, back in Studio G

with Willie and Nina,

getting ready to earn some points of their own

during the Half-Time Quiz Show.

All right, let's brush up on the rules, shall we?

points are available.

You have seconds to answer as many questions as you can.

No, the actual answer is "spin."

He puts a spin on the ball.

Oh, yeah.

Hey, great job, guys.

points, that's an awesome score.

And now let's check back with Rosario, Bridget and Madi.

ANGELIA: We should start cutting your pattern.

It's self-feeding, so you kind of just guide it a little.

RUFF: That's looking good.Fabulous.

RUFF: Going in super-slow motion.

There you go.

ANGELIA: Don't be afraid.

You're not going to sew your fingers.

So this is the poof of my hat.

RUFF: Looks a little fluffy there for a dog.

All right, I'm going to get more fluff.

More fluff?

So you just got to finish gluing on your little trims

and putting the Velcro on, and then we'll be off.

Hey, Ruff, what's up?

You're making some

pretty snazzy stuff.

It's time to see your garments in action.

You guys are going to be in a fashion show!

Oh, cool.

Cool.That's awesome.

You need to get your models ready,

then head down to the South End Open Market, and we'll find out

who is the winner of Project Ruffway.

Let's go.Let's go.

These guys are good!

I think I'm learning.

How about a vest?

With a purple top hat and a boa.

Still no?

You know, in my day, all you needed was a collar.

Let's go back to the ballpark.

Michael, this is great. Ruff sent over

some high-speed video equipment, and what we're going to do is

we're going to compare your pitching delivery

against Justin's.

MIKE: I get to pitch?

STEVEN: You get to pitch.

MIKE: Ah, that was a bad one.

RUFF: Okay, there's some follow-through problems there.

[groans]

RUFF: That's looking a little better.

See that leg whip around

for the follow-through?

High-speed video lets you see stuff

[speaking slowly]: in really slow motion.

What we're looking at here

is the five phases of the pitching delivery.

I want you to tell me

what the differences are between

your pitching mechanics and Justin's.Okay.

STEVEN: Did you ever get to a balance position?

RUFF: He didn't get the knee all the way up.

STEVEN: You notice anything different right here?

MIKE: He kept his elbow up.

STEVEN: And he released the pitch.

You know, you really have nice mechanics.

MIKE: But it looks like I fell back.

STEVEN: And Justin, what was the difference?

MIKE: He was balanced.

I think what you're going to find is that if we can

get that lead leg into that nice, high, balance position,

you're going to be able to throw

a little bit harder.MIKE: Okay.

RUFF: You see how Justin's knee

goes all the way up to his chest?

That's what we need to get Mike to do.

Let's get to work on that-- so you don't fall down,

have everybody laugh at you, just like they did my walkabout.

All right, now it's time to bring in the models,

who have been dining on kibble in the green room.

BRIDGET: Yeah, that looks great.

Come on, Zoe.

Want your hat on?

Come on, Zoe.

RUFF: Zoe's a little cranky today.

This is the cutest thing.

I think this fits really good.

RUFF: And the hat.

Oh, that's just precious.

What am I going to wear?!

The importance of this drill

is getting that knee into the balance position.

We want to load up all our weight

on the back leg, so that when we make our pitch,

we're getting our momentum,

and we're transferring that weight

out into the release of the baseball itself, right?

Okay. That will enable you to throw harder.

Let's have you try one right here.

Nice rocker step.

Excellent.

Good.

RUFF: See that? Right there.

Mike's knee is up to his chest in the balance position.

Well, he's got his mechanics down,

so let's see if he can get the ball over the plate.

Do it again.

RUFF: Rocker step, balance...

Perfect strike!

Strike-- right down the middle.

Good job.

RUFF: Let me give him a call.

[phone rings]I think he's ready.
