RUFF: Yes, it's here! Ooh!

"What is it?"

Only the greatest Ruffman product ever invented.

The Ruffball!

It says here that I promise hours of fun.

Okay, Chet, let 'em loose!

Ruff sent us here to learn about what his Ruffball is good for.

I teach physics at the high school level. Cool!

So, I'd love to help you out.

Yay! What are physics? [laughing]

Good question. Part of physics is the study of

how things move and why they move.

Which has a lot to do with what balls do.

Here we have a lot of balls that are about the same size

and they have different uses

that you're probably familiar with.

Take a look at all those old-fashioned balls.

Boring!

There's one really important thing about

what makes a ball a ball.

It's round. This one's...

This...This is, like, not round. It's, like, lumpy.

Hello!

It's supposed to be lumpy.

I filled it with oatmeal.

LIZA: The texture, too.

This one is, like, grippy most of,

like, the majority of it is grippy

and the top is, like, furry.

And these are all the way around are kind of grippy-ish.

This one's odd because... Odd?!

Different textures.it has different textures

whereas these try to be reliable

and have the same texture throughout.

There's nothing odd about Ruffball.

Oh, my Ruffball sausages.

Okay, there's Matt.

Hey, you must be Sterling.Yeah.

Sterling, I'm Matt.Nice to meet you.

This is Campanelli Stadium.

It's home of the Brockton Rox.

We are a minor league professional baseball team.

Okay. You want to learn about the game?

Yeah. The Brockton Rox rocks!

Now, are you a baseball player?

No, but I watch it on TV.

So, you've seen a baseball field before.

There's the bases and then there's

the pitcher's mound in the middle of the infield

where the pitcher throws the ball

to the catcher behind home plate.

You go to first base first, then you run to second base,

then you run to third...

And then fourth base!

..and then you run home. I mean, home.

And whoever scores the most runs in the game, wins.

In the grass out there, that's the outfield.

If the ball goes outside of the foul pole...

Or off the white line right there?

Or off to the left of the white line right there,

then it's a foul ball.

That sounds bad.

Everything inside is a fair ball

and you can play it.

Hmm. Blossom, I may borrow

some of baseball's rules for my game.

All right, Sterling, welcome to the clubhouse.

All the players have their own lockers.

Everybody's dressed, right? We have one for you.

Sterling gets his own locker!

Hat, mitt, bat.

We've got to see what kind of skills

you have out there on the field.

You need to have a uniform.

Oh, awesome!

I'm ready, Ruff.

Uniforms.

Blossom, we need uniforms for Ruffball.

Help me find my spandex and my leg warmers.

Don't make that face.

MR. D: Why don't we look at the individual balls

and think about what they're used for,

and then we can list the properties

that make them good at what they do?

So I guess a soccer ball would be used,

obviously, for kicking.

So kicking is one of the things we use the ball for.

So why don't you try kicking it and see the difference?

Okay, soccer ball.

That was good. Yay, you can kick it.

See? You can kick mine, too.

What... it's like... [sputters]That, like, bounced.

At the end, it curved.

'Cause this went against the wall.

It went, like, all the way to the wall,

and then that one, like, turned.

So this one went a lot farther than this one.

And this went straight, too.

All right, so the Ruffball doesn't roll far or straight.

What about the weight?

Well, the weight-- it's really light.

Light enough to kick and catch?

Yeah. Okay.

Okay, so the soccer ball is light enough

to kick and catch.

So let's try another ball. You want to try a kickball?

Well, clearly, that's made for kicking.

Yeah!

My Ruffball's made for Ruffball.

It's awesome!

TALIA: It bounced a lot on the way there.

MR. D: Bounciness seems to be an important property.

And we call that property elasticity.

Okay, so elasticity is bounciness.

Well, this steamed dumpling has very little elasticity,

however, still delicious.

MR. D: All right, why don't we try the basketball?

So what do we do with a basketball?

You dribble it.Dribble?

In this sport, you're, like, holding it,

and you sh**t it.

TALIA: What about the weight?

It's a little bit bigger,

and it does have the same weight, it feels about.

MR. D: So it's reasonably light?

LIZA: For passing and sh**ting, I guess.

MR. D: Right. The other two were light

so that kicking would work,

whereas this is light for throwing.

But it still has elasticity, so...

MR. D: And the last ball is bowling ball.

It's too heavy.

So it's heavy for control

and so that you can give power

to knock down the bowling pins? Okay.

Okay, now that's dangerous.

Nobody should kick a bowling ball.

Roll!

Now let's roll the Ruffball.

Come on. It's gotta go further than the bowling ball.

Well, it's unpredictable,

and that might be something fun.

Unpredictability is fun.

You hear that?

Let's put that on the packaging, Blossom.

MATT: All right, Sterling,

I got your next challenge for you.All right.

Go to home plate. Great. What are we eating?

We're definitely gonna need plates for Ruffball.

To carry the sausages, of course.

MATT: We have set up here a batting practice mat.

We're gonna teach you the strike zone.

Now the strike zone

starts at the letters of his jersey

and it goes down to his knees.

Right. And below that is a ball, right?

That's right, anything above that is a ball.

The width of the strike zone is the width of the plate.

So if you can imagine a rectangle from Rolando's letters

the width of the plate down to his knees,

that's the strike zone.

And as the catcher sits behind home plate,

there's an umpire behind him that rules whether or not...

That calls.

You got it. Rules whether or not

it's a ball or a strike.

And if it's a strike, Rolando tries to hit it.

Umpires? Maybe we need umpires for Ruffball.

Okay, Sterling, the umpire's right behind the catcher

just like this.

That's a strike.

The ball is just within the strike zone,

and since he didn't hit it, it's a strike.

MATT: That's high. That's a ball.

You got it.

That's outside. Outside?

So that's also a ball.

MATT: It's outside of the zone

to the right-handed hitter.

Ready to call some? Yeah.

RUFF: All right, now it's time

for Sterling to be an umpire.

Strike!

Good strike call, Sterling.

Strike! Two!

Strike three! You're out! Three strikes.

How many outs should we have in Ruffball?

I say .

TALIA: Should we do Ruff's ball?

It's lighter than the soccer ball and the basketball,

but not as light as the kickball.

But it's a lot lighter than the bowling ball. Definitely.

Okay, the two most important properties of the ball

is the weight and the elasticity.

Do you know what exactly is weight?

How can you tell something's heavier?

This one, like, makes my arm, like, go...

But which direction is it going?

TALIA: Down. Down.

That's it.

Oh, so it's like gravity.

LIZA: Gravitational pull.

The gravitational pull. Thank you.

Right, so weight is the force downwards

on something's mass.

And mass is the amount of stuff you've got.

Mass is how much stuff the ball's made of.

And its weight is how much Earth's gravity pulls

on that stuff. [yelps]

Now, mass measures inertia.

And that's how much an object resists moving,

or changing its motion.

Oh, okay.

And the way to feel that is take the ball

and now just move it back and forth.

So something with a lot of mass, like a bowling ball,

is hard to get moving.

But once it gets moving, it's hard to stop.

Whoo-hoo!

[screams, grunts]

Liza and Talia still need to find out

what the Ruffball's good for.

All right, Sterling, this is Chris Miyake.

He's the Brockton Rox manager.

Hi, Sterling. Great to meet you.

Hey, Coach. I'm a coach, too.

Okay, team, let's huddle up.

No, instead of huddle, let's dogpile! Whee!

Oh, sorry, Chet.[squeaks]

Okay, Sterling, we're gonna head out to shortstop

and I'm gonna show you how to

field a ground ball and then throw it to first base.

Feet about shoulder-width apart

so that we can get down, field the ground ball.

Hands up in the throwing position.

Take a step forward.

Up and fire.

Ground ball hit to Sterling right in the mitt... sort of.

Not that easy, is it?

No.

That's why we keep practicing.

And a throw to first base.

Much better.

Infielders usually take

about to ground balls a day to get their practice in.

That's a lot.

Uh-oh. You have to move your feet. Good.

There you go, Sterling.

Set up, throw. Good job.

Now, Sterling's using a glove.

If I'm gonna use a glove for Ruffball,

it's gonna have to be enormous.

What? There's no money in the budget for uniforms?

Use the Ruffball as the uniform?

How am I supposed to do that?

Oh, I see where you're going.

Hey, Sterling, let's go take some batting practice.

There you go.

What two properties are most important for balls

that are designed for kicking? They need to be lightweight

and elastic.

That's what I was thinking.Oh.

What is the name of the team that Sterling is working with?

It's home of the Brockton Rox.Oh.

Yes. Extra challenge. Go fetch!

All right.

Bye. Bye, Ruff.

Bye, guys.

So, are Liza and Talia understanding the gravity

of their situation?

Let's find out!

Okay, so why don't we learn more

about these different properties by doing some tests?

Yes! Awesome.

So, why don't we just start with the elasticity,

or the bouncing? Okay.

Let's check elasticity.

So, how high up it bounces back to

is going to be a good measure.

Bouncability. The kickball.

I think the kickball bounced, like, %

of the way back up.

LIZA: Yeah. The soccer ball was %.

It's actually completely right

to say that that's % elastic.

TALIA: Really?

Yeah. Height is the direct measure.

RUFF: All right, Talia.

The bowling ball was, like...

LIZA: Ten percent. ten percent.

So, % for basketball, too?

Here we go, Ruff.

All right. Let's go, elasticity. Yes!

Uh, that didn't work.[snickers]

Well, it bounces.

Bounces about as high as Chet.

Oh, I can't believe a bowling ball

is bouncier than my Ruffball.

So, now we know that our Ruffball

isn't good for bouncing.

Okay, let's look at the basketball,

which is something that you throw.

So, it's elasticity, which we don't have.

Reasonably light.

Oh...

So, it is reasonably light?Oh!

Is it light enough?Yeah. This is really light.

So, it is. It's...

So, actually,

it has all the qualities of something to throw.

Yes. So, our Ruffball is a throwing ball.

It's a throwing ball. Yes.

Now we just need to find a game that involves throwing the ball.

[phone ringing] Oh.

Hey, Ruff. Hey, Ruff.

Hello, ladies. Now, look, I promised

hours of fun when playing with a Ruffball,

and so far, we've only gotten six seconds.

You might have wanted to have made it more of a circle.
