Goes backwards and has a whole lot of arms.

Whoa! What's it called?

It's called a michelinoceras from way back in the triassic

Time period, and I just got tickets to visit them.

You mean, we're taking the dinosaur train under the sea?

To the triassic?

We sure are.

Wait. We're going to visit a sea creature that moves

Backwards and has a whole lot of arms?

Yeah. Doesn't that sound great?

Well, how many arms, does this michelinoceras have?

I'm not exactly sure. A lot, I think.

It doesn't look like it can move fast. It doesn't have any

Oh, the michelinoceras can swim, tiny. Actually, it's fun

To watch them. It's like a little show.

Great question! We keep our same shells. They start small

And grow longer as we get bigger.

Yeah. Our shells are the most important thing to us.

They're like our houses. They protect our bodies. Plus, they

Look pretty cool, don't you think?

Yeah! They're gorgeous.

You also have amazing arms.

Inside our shells. It fills up with water when we gulp it in.

Then we sh**t out the water really hard, and boom!

I bet moving like that helps you get away from predators

Michelinoceras was an amazing carnivore, or

Meat-eater, that lived underwater during the triassic

Time period. Michelinoceras didn't have any legs or fins or

Even any bones. Instead, michelinoceras made a home

Inside a hard shell. Can you think of some animals alive

Today that don't have any bones?

Worm!

Snails!

Jellyfish!

Great examples. In fact, most of the living creatures on

Earth don't have bones. The shell of michelinoceras helped

Protect it from bigger predators. Michelinoceras comes

From a long line of squid-like animals called nautiloids that

Lived long before the dinosaurs and long after most of the

Dinosaurs were gone. Although the living nautilus looks very

Different from michelinoceras, these animals still share a lot

In common, a soft body, lots of tentacle arms and a hard shell.

Also, nautiloids like michelinoceras have a special

Way of swimming by squirting water out of their shells like

A jet to push themselves through the water. Great stuff!

Weather in all kinds of places from hot deserts to rainy

Forests. We're not sure exactly how they did this, but we can

Get some clues by looking at animals living today. Now what

Kind of animal is this?

The camel!

Right. Camels actually get water from the plant food they

Eat, and they can walk for days and days under the hot sun, and

Polar bears have thick coats of fur to help keep them warm in

The frigid temperatures way up north in the arctic. Brr!

Dinosaurs must have had special features dealing with weather,

Too. The plates of stegosaurus may have helped keep them cool

In the heat of the summer, and the feathers of some troodons

Likely helped to keep them warm during the chilly arctic

Winters.

[Thunder] whoa! Looks like there's some

Weather coming. Ok. Remember, get outside, get into nature,

And make your own discoveries!

Did you know that the dinosaur train travels

Everywhere in the mesozoic era?

Let's look at the map. There was the triassic, jurassic, and

Cretaceous time periods. Let's visit the triassic. During the

Triassic when dinosaurs first appeared, the oceans were

Already full of many strange creatures like michelinoceras,

A squid-like animal that lived in a shell and swam backwards,

And that's just one of the stops on the dinosaur train!
