To teamwork! Whoo-hoo!

Well, hello, team pteranodon.

Hello, mr. Conductor!

All aboard!

[Dip-dip dip-dip]

Hi, there. I'm dr. Scott the paleontologist, and this is

Dilophosaurus, a theropod dinosaur from the jurassic time

Period. The name dilophosaurus means double-crested lizard, and

Paleontologists think that this animal used its two crests for

Showing off to other dilophosaurus. We know that

Dilophosaurus was a carnivore, a meat-eater, but where did this

Meat-eater get its meat? Did it hunt other animals like lions do

Today, or was dilophosaurus a scavenger, eating meat from

Animals that were already dead?

That's what vultures do today.

Some paleontologists think that tyrannosaurus rex was only a

Scavenger, but very few carnivores around today survive

Only by scavenging meat from already dead animals. In fact,

Vultures are some of the only large creatures that can survive

Just by scavenging. Instead, most carnivores are like lions.

They get their meat from hunting and from scavenging. You might

Know this animal. It's a hyena.

Many people think that hyenas are only scavengers, but it

Turns out that they're excellent hunters, as well. Hyenas often

Hunt in groups just like we think some dinosaurs did. So

Although we can't say for sure, chances are that dilophosaurus,

T. Rex, and most other theropods were both hunters and

Scavengers. Ok. Keep watching for more dinosaur discoveries.

Hello, folks. It's me the conductor. Today the pteranodon

Family will see a meteor shower, a display of light

Streaking across the night sky, so come on along with me

On the dinosaur train. All aboard!

[Giggling]

, , ! Bbbbbblll! All right, kids!

Gather round. Time for a pteranodon team adventure!

Adventure?!

What is it, dad?

Well, the conductor told me there's gonna be a special

Event at the big pond tonight called a meteor shower.

What's a shower?

Is it like a waterfall?

What's a meteor?

I hope it's a kind of fish.

All good questions, and I know they can be answered by

One very smart troodon.

The conductor!

Heh heh. To the dinosaur train!

Whoo-hoo!

Tickets, tickets, please.

Well, hello, pteranodon family.

Hello, mr. Conductor!

Oh. Headed to the big pond, eh?

Yeah! We're gonna take a meteor shower, mr. The

Conductor.

Oh, of course. We talked about seeing the meteor shower,

Right, mr. And mrs. P?

Rawk!

Right.

A meteor shower isn't the kind of shower you take. It's a

Shower you watch, but we have to wait till nighttime.

Oh, that's why we're going at night?

Exactly right, tiny. Now as we all know, the sky at night

Is full of stars, but there are also bits of rock and dust that

Float around in outer space, and they can be as small as a

Grain of sand and as big as a boulder! The earth is

Surrounded by a blanket of gases called the atmosphere.

When rocks from space are pulled into the atmosphere of

The earth, they get very hot, burning up as they zoom across

The sky. That's when we call them meteors.

Wow!

But when do we get to the see the shower?

When we see a whole lot of meteors on the same night, we

Call them meteor showers, and that's what we'll see in the

Sky tonight, lots of meteors falling, making trails of

Bright light.

[Cheering] rawk! I can't wait to get to

The big pond.

Well, yes, miss tiny, we will indeed go to the big pond,

But first we're gonna take a small detour to pick up a few

Other creatures.

Oh, boy! Who?

Well, our first stop is to get, uh, erma eoraptor.

Erma eoraptor? But she lives way back in the triassic.

That's a pretty big detour.

Well, yeah. Heh. Hope no one minds going along for the ride.

Whoo-hoo! We want to go!

Rawk! It will be so great to see erma. She's a lot of fun.

You and erma are really good friends, right mr. Conductor?

Well, yeah. We--we certainly are, tiny. I'm really looking

Forward to showing her the big pond. She's never seen it

Before.

Phew.

You seem kind of nervous about seeing erma, mr.

Conductor.

Oh, you're right, mr.

Quite a liking to her, and I just want to spend a little

I'm happy to see you, too, you charmer, you.

Well, I am tickled to be back on this dinosaur train. I plum

Forgot just how purty it is inside here.

So, erma. How are things in the triassic time period?

Oh, about the same as always, tiny. A lot of running

Around fast, looking for food.

So, kids, what's this big pond place we're going to?

It's a big pond!

With forests and fields and flowers.

And there's a beach with shells.

Rawk! We fish there a lot!

Fish, huh? Well, I never.

Erma, have you ever seen a meteor shower?

I seen a heap of things in my day, don, but never a shower

Of meteors.

The meteors are pieces of rock from space.

They fall like a shower, but it's not stars that are

Falling. It will be meteors.

My, you cretaceous kids. So smart using them big mouthfuls

Of fancy words. Right, mr.

Conductor?

Right you are as usual, erma. Oh! Big pond! Big pond

Ok. Fine, kids. Just stay within rawking distance, ok?

Ok. Rawk!

Come on, erma. Let's see if we can find our own place to

Enjoy the sky show.

Heh heh heh.

Ohh. It's so dang relaxing here. I just love watching that

Old sun set there in the sky.

Indeed. And it's nice to be alone with you, erma, away from

Everyone.

Ohh! I hope I'm not interrupting. I have one

Question. What big pond leaf do you think is best for making

Leafloaf?

Uh, fern leaves may be the best.

Fern leaves, got it. One more question. How about

Conifer leaves? Do herbivores have any favorites? Do you?

I believe that was more than one question. Here's an idea.

Heh. We'll talk leaves later on the train. For now, let's enjoy

The night sights.

All right. We'll talk leaves later. Thanks! Evening, ma'am.

Oh, I know, erma. Let's take a walk to see the flowers.

There are some magnolias, and the purple ones are lilies.

Oh, my. So purty. It's a whole different world here in

The cretaceous. We don't have these fancy flowers in the

Triassic, don't you know?

That's right. Flowers are a special feature of the

Cretaceous time period, and, erma, being with you is a

Special feature for me.

Aw.

Aw. Mm-hmm. It does smell good here.

That's the thing about flowers. They smell good, and,

You know, I believe they smell even nicer when you're near me.

Hi, there. I'm dr. Scott the paleontologist. Let's learn more

About the job of a paleontologist, a scientist who

Studies fossils. Today I'm in the preparation lab. This is the

Room where we carefully remove the rock from the fossils and

Then glue the bones back together. The workers use a

Variety of tools from small needles and brushes to power

Tools for the heavy-duty work.

Most of this work is done by volunteers, people who have

Amazing patience and give a lot of their time. Sometimes it

Takes weeks, months, or even years to prepare one dinosaur

Specimen. Now we don't just prepare dinosaur bones here.

Paleontologists study lots of other kinds of fossils, too--

Insects, fishes, turtles, leaves, eggshells, even dinosaur

Poop! So the prep lab is an important part of paleontology.

Ok. Remember, get outside, get into nature, and make your own

Discoveries.
