♪ Building words before our eyes ♪

♪ With Dog ♪ And Sheep ♪ And Duck ♪ And Pig

♪ There's always a surprise! ♪

(barks)

KIDS: Word World!

(croaks)

(whimpers)

(giggles)

♪ Welcome to our world

KIDS: Word World!

♪ It's a beautiful world

♪ Word World. ♪

KIDS: Yay!

NARRATOR: It was the first big snowfall in Word World.

And Bear was very excited.

I sure am!

I love to go sledding in the snow!

But I can't find my sled.

No, no, no.

This is all my summer stuff.

(panting, barks)

(gasps)

(whines)

What, Dog?

Oh, there it is!

Awesome!

You are so clever, Dog.

(softly growls)

Come on, "S" and "L."

(grunting)

They're stuck.

Whoa!

Oh, it's not my sled.

It's just the letters "S" and "L."

They make the "sluh" sound in sled.

But where are the letters "E" and "D"?

They make the "ed" sound.

"Sluh-ed."

Without "ed" I have no sled.

(pants, gasps)

(barking)

Yes, Dog.

This is my bed.

But we're not looking for a bed.

We're looking for the letters

"E" and "D" for my sled.

(growls, barks)

Hey, you're right!

Bed has the letters "E" and "D," too.

And they make the "ed" sound in "bed."

"Buh-ed."

So if I take the letters "E" and "D" from my bed

I can build a sled.

Uh-huh! Uh-huh!

(grunting)

♪ There's so many words in the "ed" family ♪

♪ Like "bed" and "shed" and the color "red" ♪

♪ And my all-time favorite my trusty "sled." ♪

KIDS: Sled!

Awesome!

Now we're ready for some serious sledding.

Come on, Dog.

(barks, pants)

NARRATOR: So Bear and Dog rushed to the top of the hill

where their WordFriends were already having fun in the snow.

ANT: Hey, you guys, check this out.

(grunting)

Ooh!

Did you make a snow angel?

No.

I made a snow "ant."

Huh?

(gasps) Hey!

I'm going to make a snow "pig!"

And I'm going to make a snow "sheep."

(grunting)

(chuckles)

Hey, everyone, expert snow sledder coming through.

SHEEP: What a pretty sled, Bear.

Oh, it's not just pretty-- it's pretty fast.

I'm going to sled down this hill

faster than any WordFriend ever has before.

You know, that sounds like fun.

Let's go in the shed

and see if there are sleds in there for us.

That's a great idea.

I'll help you build the sleds.

(laughing)

Aw, man, I don't see any sleds in here.

But I see the letters that can build a sled.

The letters "E-D-- ed,"

they make the "ed" sound in "sled."

Sluh-ed.

♪ And my all-time favorite my trusty "sled." ♪

Hey, I found the letters "S-L."

If I put the "sluh" sound next to the "ed" sound,

I'll build a sluh-ed...

KIDS: Sled!

Look at me! Look at me!

"Sluh" and "ed" make...

KIDS: Sled!

Sluh-ed.

KIDS: Sled!

Awesome.

Now that you all have your sleds,

I'll show you how to do some serious sledding.

Follow me. (excited barking)

Watch me closely and do exactly what I do.

Awesome! I love to sled!

Let's go! Let's go!

Whee!

(squealing)

Whee!

Whoo!

They're doing pretty well.

I think I'll show them something really cool.

NARRATOR: So Bear showed her WordFriends how to jump over a bump.

BEAR: Watch me catch some air.

NARRATOR: But Bear jumped a little higher than she had planned.

Too much air! Too much air!

NARRATOR: And what goes up must come down.

Uh-oh.

Whoa!

Oh! Watch out!

Oh!

Look out!

Yikes!

Whoa! Yikes!

(Dog groaning)

Not awesome.

Are you guys okay?

(barking and panting)

I'm okay.

Ow!

NARRATOR: But Bear was not okay.

She hurt herself when she landed.

Yeow! My big toe hurts.

(gasps)

That's awful, Bear.

You should get off your feet and get into bed.

No way.

It's the first day of snow.

Nothing's going to stop me from going sledding.

Ow!

Aw, this isn't fair.

I want to go sledding.

(clucking tongue)

I'm sorry, but you really need to go straight to bed.

Okay.

But I don't have a bed anymore.

I used the "ed" of my bed to make my sled.

(snoring)

Great thinking, Dog.

We can make Bear a bed with the "ed" in her sled.

All we need is a letter "B."

The "buh" sound in "buh-ed."

And I saw a letter "B" at the top of the hill

in the shed.

Then what are we waiting for?

Oh!

(Ant humming)

NARRATOR: So the WordFriends carried Bear

all the way up to the top of the hill

so they could build her a bed.

(Dog panting)

(Dog whines)

Good, Dog.

Now that we have the letter "B,"

the "buh" sound...

We just need the "ed" sound.

♪ The letters "E-D" are great, you see ♪

♪ There's so many words in the "ed" family ♪

♪ Like "sled" and "shed" and the color "red" ♪

♪ But now our friend Bear needs a comfy bed. ♪

KIDS: Bed!

(Bear grunting)

Ah. You're right, I do feel better lying on my bed.

And you can watch us sled from your bed.

Yeah. Feel better, Bear.

NARRATOR: As Bear watched her friends go sledding,

she wished she could be riding her sled

and not lying in her bed.

Hey, if I can't go down the hill on my sled,

maybe I can go down the hill on my bed.

I'm going down the hill. I'm going down the hill.

I'm not going down the hill.

(sighs)

Man, this is my favorite day of the year

and I can't even go sledding.

If only I could sled with this bed.

(Dog imitates sled whooshing)

That's a great idea, Dog.

Yeah, I can put this bed on top of a sled

and then I can go sledding.

There's just one problem.

We have the letters "S-L" to make sled,

but we used the letters "E-D" to make Bear's bed.

And there are no more letters in the shed.

Oh, this is just terrible.

Bear can't sled because we don't have an "ed."

NARRATOR: But Dog noticed that they did have another "ed."

(excited barking)

Hey, Dog is right.

There may not be any letters inside the shed,

but the word "shed" has the letters "E-D."

Sh-ed.

We just need to take the "ed" from the shed.

(all grunting)

Now we have the "ed."

And I've got the "sluh."

So all we have to do is...

ALL: Build a word!

♪ It's time to build a word

♪ Let's build it

♪ Let's build it now.

ANT: "S-L, sluh."

"E-D, ed."

KIDS: Sled!

♪ Yeah, we just built a word

♪ We built it, we built it.

Yay!

We have a sled for Bear and her bed.

Oh, yeah. Let's go.

Oh.

Awesome.

Thank you, guys.

Now I can sled while staying in bed.

Now watch me do some serious bed sledding.

(excited barking)

(cheering)

You're just in time for our song.

♪ They're terrific friends, you see ♪

♪ Put them together and here's what you've found ♪

St-- a whole new sound.

♪ St... age

ALL: Stage!

♪ S and T, they're all the rage ♪

♪ Look, we've built a stage... ♪

(music slows then stops)

(all gasping)

Oh, no.

What's the matter?

I can't get up onto the stage.

(grunting)

It's too high.

If we can't get up on the stage,

we'll never be able to finish our "S" and "T" song.

Oh, what are we going to do?

There has to be a way.

We need something to help us get onto the stage,

so we don't have to take such a big step.

Hmm...

(quacking) Step... stage...

St... st...

I know.

All we have to do is...

ALL: Build a word.

Another "st" word.

♪ It's time to build a word

♪ Let's build it, let's build it now. ♪

St... airs.

KIDS: Stairs!

♪ Yeah, we just built a word

♪ We built it, we built it.

Well, now that we have these stairs,

it will be easy to get up onto the stage.

Let's finish our song.

♪ S and T, they're all the rage ♪

♪ Look, we built a stage

And stairs.

♪ S and T, S and T ♪

♪ Make a perfect blend, you see ♪

♪ Though I may stammer

♪ I'll stand tall and state

♪ S-T, st, that sound is great... ♪

(holding note)

♪ St.

(pants, barks)

under the waters of Word World

KIDS: Shark!

Hi.

ALL: Sh-sh-shark!

Eek!

Oh, why does that always happen?

I say "Hi," and everyone swims away.

NARRATOR: Well, Shark, lots of WordFriends

think you're... scary.

Who, me?

But that's... but that's... silly.

I'm just looking for a friend.

DUCK: Hey, anybody want to hear a joke?

(gasps) I do.

Hello, anybody?

Yoo-hoo, fishes.

Doesn't anybody want to hear a joke?

I do!

Oh!

Oh! I'm sorry.

I didn't mean to scare you.

(laughing): I'm okay.

Say, you're a mighty big fish.

Who are you?

(laughing): Well, I'm...

Wait, wait, don't tell me. Let me guess.

I know my letters pretty well, you know.

I can figure out what you are.

Oh, okay.

Okay, let's see... (clears throat)

S-H-A-R-K.

Hmm... s-hark...

Oh, you're a s-hark.

Yeah, that's...

What's a s-hark?

Well, you see, actually, you say it...

Well, I'm Duck.

D-U-C-K.

Glad to meet you, S-hark.

Now, you want to hear a joke?

Uh, sure.

Okay, okay, okay. (clears throat)

How do ducks learn to fly?

I don't know, how?

We just wing it.

(laughing): You get it?

We got wings.

(both laughing)

We got wings.

You're funny.

I am?

I mean, of course I am.

I like you, S-hark.

You want to be my friend?

(gasps) Do I ever.

You got to meet my friend Frog.

Oh, he'd love you.

Hey, you want to come back to my pond

and play with me?

Play? I love to play.

Well, come on then.

(quacking)

NARRATOR: Of course, Duck didn't know that "S-hark"

was really a shark.

So he wasn't afraid of him.

Duck was just happy to be his friend.

You sure walk funny, S-hark.

Oh, Frog.

Frog?

Uh, Frog?

Are you home? Hmm!

I guess he's not home.

Well, come on, S-hark.

Let's go find him.

Uh, would you mind if I just stayed here

while you look for him?

All this walking around has made my tail sore.

Oh, sure, S-hark.

You just wait right here and I'll be back with Frog.

Make yourself comfy.

See you soon.

(sighs)

NARRATOR: So Duck went off to find Frog.

But what Duck didn't know

was that Frog was already on his way home.

Wait until you see this, Sheep.

Oh, I think it's my best invention yet.

Oh, I'm so excited.

Oh, and Fish is, too.

Aren't you, little Fish?

S-H-O-E.

Sh-oe.

(squeaking)

(twanging)

KIDS: Shoe!

Ooh... a shoe.

Not just any kind of shoe.

This is a shoe you can wear on both feet.

So you only have to put on one shoe every day

instead of two.

In... deed.

Here, let me show you how it works. (grunts)

Uh, if you only have one shoe on both, uh, feet,

how do you, uh... walk?

Okay, I'm still working out the kinks on this one.

But I have more

inventions to show you.

Let's see...

The reversible underpants

are going to be a good one, I think.

Ooh, how about

the -scoop ice cream cone? (snoring)

Or the word-powered tongue warmer?

Watermelon seed extractor?

Solar-powered itch-a-ma-scratcher?

(whispers): Frog, you didn't tell me you had company.

Well, that's because I don't, Sheep,

other than you and Fish, I mean.

Well, excuse me for asking then,

but, uh...

who's that?

(whispering): Sh... sh... shark!

(croaks)

(squealing)

It's okay, little Fish.

Shh.

Don't wake him.

(mumbling) ...hungry.

Um, how did a shark get into your log?

That's what I'd like to know, Sheep.

Who would bring a shark in here?

Hi, guys.

I see you found my new friend.

Shh. Duck...

why would you bring a shark into my house?

(laughing)

Frog, can't you read?

That's not a shark, that's a s-hark.

Duck, when S and H are together they make the sound "sh."

The sound "sh"?

Yes, like in "sh-eep."

Yes, S, H.

Sh-eep.

S, H... sh... sheep.

Oh, yeah.

Well, what do you know.

S and H make "sh."

(laughs)

(grumbling)

Shh.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, that's what I said.

S and H make "sh."

No, Duck, shh-- as in be a little, uh, quieter.

Or you'll wake the...

No, no, no, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.

I can sound this one out.

So, sh-ark... shark.

We don't want to wake the shark.

(gasps)

Shark?!

Shh!

(yawning)

My, that nap was just what my sore tail needed.

Oh, hi, Duck.

(quacking)

(whimpering)

And this must be your friend Frog.

(whimpering)

And this must be your friend Sheep.

Um... uh, uh, uh... (squeaking whine)

And this must be your friend Fish.

(Fish squealing)

You certainly have a lot of friends, Duck.

It must be because you're so funny!

(laughing)

S-hark? You're a shark?

Uh... uh, um, yes, that's right.

Well, why didn't you tell me you were a shark?

I was afraid you wouldn't want to be my friend

if you knew I was a shark.

No one wants to be friends with a shark.

Well, why not?

I don't care if you're a shark or a s-hark

or a purple, polka-dotted monkey laying eggs on a bicycle.

(laughing)

Purple, polka-dotted!

(Shark laughing)

You're so funny, Duck. (laughing)

(groans): Oh...

Uh, what's the matter?

My tail, it still hurts from walking.

Oh, it does?

Well, if we're gonna play together,

then we have to do something about that tail of yours.

Well, Frog, what about your invention?

Of course! My shoe!

I've got just the word thing for you.

(tongue zings)

We just have to put it back together again.

Sounds good to me.

Come on, Duck, give me a hand.

It's time to...

(squeaking)

(twanging)

KIDS: Shoe!

♪ Yeah, we just built a word

(music stops)

(grunts)

Wow! This shoe fits perfectly!

Mm, it was nothing.

I'm something of a shoe expert, you know?

NARRATOR: And so the WordFriends put aside their fear of Shark

and got to know him a little better that day.

Ooh, hey, Shark! Quack, quack!

Why don't the letters "S" and "H" talk?

(laughs): I don't know, Duck. Why?

(giggles): Because everyone always says "Shh" when they see them.

(laughter) You get it?

(laughter continues)

SHARK: Oh, Duck! (squeaky groan)
