Xavier: Hello andwelcome to the show!

Today we're meeting someone who made reading possible

for a lot of people:

Louis Braille!

Yadina: Louis became blind when he was just three years old.

Being blind means your eyes don't see very well.

Some blind people, like Louis,

can't see anything at all.

Xavier: But that didn't stop him from doing something

he really loved: reading!

Louis came up with his own way for people who are blind

to read and write.

Yadina: I wonder what it was like?

[low rumble]

Brad: Um--

Aah! Whoa!

What are all these bumps?

Yadina: But, they're in little groups...

Kind of like a...code!

Brad: What do you think it says?

Xavier: Let's start the show and find out!

♪♪

Yadina: Hey Brad! Brad: Uaaah!

Oh! Haha, here, check out what I made!

Xavier: [reading] "Brad's Big Book of Butterflies"

You made a whole book?

Brad: Yep! It's filled with TONS of butterfly facts.

I can't wait to show it to the butterfly club.

Katie: [giggle] Did I hear "butterfly club"?

Brad: Oh hey, Katie! It's Brad.

[to Xavier, Yadina] Katie just joined the club.

She's a total caterpillar expert.

Katie: Hi, Brad!

Who are you talking to?

Brad: These are my friends, Xavier and Yadina.

Xavier: Hi, Katie.

Yadina: Hello!

[gasps] That is a cool walking stick.

Katie: [giggles] This?

It's my white cane.

I use it because I'm blind;

I can see some shapes and colours but not clearly.

So my cane helps me discover where things are.

Brad, I gotta go, bye!

Brad: Yeah...Bye!

Xavier/Yadina: Bye, Katie.

Brad: [sadly] Uhm--

Yadina: Brad? What's with the sad face?

Brad: [sigh] It's my book...

I really want to show it to Katie, but-

how can she read it if she can't see the words?

Xavier: Oh.

That's a great question, Brad.

I-I don't know.

[gasps] But we DO know where to

get help with great questions...

Brad: [wincing] To the Secret Museum?

Xavier/Yadina: [loudly] To the Secret--Visitors: Shhhh!!

Xavier/Yadina: [whisper] --Museum.

Brad: Hee hee.

Sorry.

Sorry!

Xavier: I wonder who the Secret Museum will send us to meet?

Yadina: And where we'll go?

Brad: And wheeeeen?

Yadina: Look out below! Xavier: Woohoo!

Brad: Woah!

Xaveir/Yadina: Hi, Berby! Berby: [bleep blarp]

Brad: Hi, Berby! Berby: [blurp]

Brad: Upf!

Xavier: ♪ [excited humming]

We're getting something!

Brad: It's a book!

But it doesn't have any words.

Just these dots.

Yadina: I wonder who it belonged to?

[computer whirring]

Xavier: Louis Braille.

That's who we're going to meet.

Yadina: In France! In the year .

Brad: But that's... [gasps] years ago!

Which is a lot of years ago.

Do you really think Louis Braille

can help me share my book with Katie?

Xavier: There's only one way to find out.

Ready for adventure?

Yadina: Ready!

Brad: Uhmm.. do we have insurance?

Hm. [big inhale] Ready!

Berby: [whirring]

Yadina: Here we go!

Berby: [bleep blarp]

Xavier: It's happening! Yadina: Hang on Dr. Zoom!

Xavier: Woohoo!

Brad: Woaaaah!

Berby: [bleep blarp bloop!]

[zap] Brad: Uaah!

Xavier: So this is France in ...

I don't see Louis Braille anywhere.

Yadina: I can't see

anything but...fog.

What about you, Dr. Zoom?

Dr. Zoom: [squeak] Yadina: Nope...

Dr. Zoom can't see either.

Brad: [off screen] Oh! Am I in a bush?

Oh boy. It feels different...

[rustles] Hello?!

Louis Braille: [speaking French] Bonjour.

Est-ce que ça va? Berby: [scanning]

Xavier: [whispers to Yadina] Hey, that's Louis Braille!

Yadina: And he's speaking French.

I'll use the translator.

Brad: Hehe. Hi, I'm Brad.

Louis: [giggles] Hi, Brad. I'm Louis.

Do you have friends here with you?

Brad: Oh! Yes.

Xavier: I'm Xavier.

Yadina: I'm Yadina, and this is Dr. Zoom.

Brad: Hey--you have a cane!

So does my friend, Katie.

Louis: Is she blind?

Brad: Yeah, but she can still see some shapes and colours.

Louis: Oh! Some of the kids who go to school here

can see a little too.

But not me. I can't see anything.

Xavier: What school?! Louis: Over there!

It's a school just for us blind kids.

It's where I learned to read.

Brad: Read? There's a book I really want to share

with my friend Katie, but,

I don't know how, if she can't read the same way I do.

Louis: Oh, there are many ways to read.

[gentle tapping]

[to himself] Turn at the missing stone...

♪♪ [gentle tapping]

Careful, there's a rock in the path.

Trio: Uaaah! [thud!]

Louis: [inhales] Mm, I smell lavender,

it means we're half way!

Brad: [sniff-sniff] Aaaah!

Louis: [off screen] We're here!

Welcome to my school.

C'mon in!

This is our library.

Mr. Lumiere: [reading] ...Thunder crashed

as the rain poured down onto the town below...

Louis: Listening to a book is a great way to read.

But sometimes, you want to read all by yourself.

[grunting] These are our books.

This one uses the Hauüy system.

It has words you can feel.

Brad: Oh yeah, the letters all stick out!

'Kay, I think this one's an...'A'?

No wait - 'B'..

No- 'C'! Louis: [giggles]

Brad: What is it? 'X'? Who uses 'X'?!

Louis: I love that I can read this on my own,

but it takes a long time to feel each letter one by one.

Yadina: Hey, I don't see any letters or words in this book.

Just dots.

Does it use a different system?

Louis: Yes! Night Writing.

It has groups of dots you can feel.

Xavier: Like a coded message a spy would use!

Brad: Ho-ho-hooo! Yadina: Oooooooo.

Louis: But there are so many dots in each group

that it's hard to feel them all at once.

I think there might be another way to read,

that's easier. And faster.

Brad: Really? Another way to read?

Louis: Yes! There are many ways to read.

So I've been working on a few ideas...

What if we change the code?

Using less dots to make each letter.

They could be small enough to fit under a fingertip,

making it easier to read.

Faster, too.

I'll get kids at my school to test it out.

With their help I'll make it better and better!

Until...

Mr. Lumiere, I've done it.

Mr. Lumiere: [chuckles] Um, done what, Louis?

Louis: I came up with a new way to read and write,

for people who are blind.

Brad: Oh, I hope his teacher likes it...

Mr. Lumiere: You created a whole new reading system?

Louis: Yes! And I can prove it works.

Give me a sentence, any sentence.

Mr. Lumiere: Hmm.. AHA!

[dictates] "The quick brown fox

jumps over

the lazy dog."

Louis: [repeats] "The quick brown fox

jumps over the lazy dog."

[calls] Eloise, you can come in now!

[explains] Eloise knows my reading system,

but not what your sentence was.

Let's see how fast she can read it.

Eloise: [reads with ease] The quick brown fox

jumps over the lazy dog.

Brad: [gasps] Mr. Lumiere: Incroyable...

She read it so fast!

Louis: Yes!

I knew there were many ways to read.

This one will help more people

read and write on their own,

so they can enjoy more books!

Brad: Wow.

Louis really did it.

And he was right!

There are many ways to read.

So...

there must be a way for Katie

to read my butterfly book!

Yadina: Maybe you could even use Louis' system.

It seems pretty good.

Brad: Louis? We have to go now.

But, thanks for your help.

Louis: You're welcome. Bye now!

Brad: Bye! Xavier/Yadina: Bye, Louis!

Brad: Berby, let's go home!

Berby: [bleep blar bloop]

♪♪

Katie: [off screen] [giggles] Tickle-tickle-tickle!

Brad: Hi Katie! It's Brad. Katie: Hi, Brad.

Brad: Um, I made something

that I really want to show you...

Katie: [slowly reading] "Brad's...Big...Book...

of...Butterflies"

Oh! Brad!

Did you write your own butterfly book in braille?!

Brad: Yes!

Well, sorta.

Only the title is in braille so far.

I wanted my book to be readable for you

and anyone else who knows braille!

I just need a few hundred more stickers to finish it.

Katie: [giggle] Well, I know a faster way,

if you want some help.

Brad: Ho-hooo! That would be amazing!

Katie: Maybe we could even add a chapter on caterpillars!

Did you know they move in a wave motion from back to front?

You wanna feel how it tickles?

Here, feel this.

Brad: Whoa...it does! [giggles]

We should definitely add that to the book.

Katie: [giggles] Brad: Butterflies are the best!

Meeting Louis Braille was SO great. Uah!

Xavier: His reading system is still used today.

And it's called braille.

Yadina: It's a great way to teach kids who are blind

how to read, write, and spell.

You can even use it for music and math!

Brad: And it's used all around the world,

in over languages!

Yadina: Braille can be read really fast too.

Some people can read up to words a minute!

[sighs]

That's fast.

Xavier: Thanks for joining our awesome adventure

to meet Louis Braille.

Brad: Who used to be a kid, just like you and me.

Yadina: So kids like you can change the world!

I am Yadina.

Xavier: I am Xavier.

Brad: I am Brad.

And I know there are many ways to read,

just like Louis Braille.

Xavier: Whoohoo! Wheeee! Brad: Welcome to the show!

Yadina: Hello.

Xavier: Today we're meeting a super creative architect:

Zaha Hadid!

Brad: An architect is someone who designs buildings,

like offices, schools and museums.

Yadina: Zaha Hadid designed buildings

that were totally unique!

Which means they were really different

from other buildings at the time.

Xavier: Zaha liked using curvy round lines

instead of just straight ones.

Berby: [whirring] Xavier: I guess Berby does too.

Brad/Yadina: Whaaaa!/Whoaaa! Xavier: Uaaah! Ugh!

Brad: Aaaand done.

Xavier? Yadina? Are you ready?

Yadina: I'm ready. Presenting,

a clubhouse inspired by

the bestest turtle in the world,

Dr. Zoom. Ta-dahhhh!

Brad: Oooo! It's very... um, turtle-y.

Xavier: Totally turtle-y.

Nice work, Yadina.

Let's see your clubhouse idea, Brad!

Brad: Okay, okay, okay!

I thought we could make one with a bunch of different parts.

Like here, an arts 'n crafts pod,

a reading pod,

[gasps] even a sushi pod!

Yadina: Yummy! Dr. Zoom 'n me LOVE sushi.

Brad: Xavier, let's see yours.

Xavier: You got it...

BOOM!

Yadina/Brad: Umm--

Yadina: Is the clubhouse behind the tree?

Xavier: The clubhouse IS the tree.

See? It has a leafy roof,

branches to sit on,

and furry friends!

Plus, we don't have to build it.

Eh? Eh?

Yadina: Good point.

Maybe that idea isn't totally...nuts.

All: [giggle]

Brad: So, which clubhouse should we build?

They're all good, but I don't know which one is the right one.

Xavier: Ummm-- Yadina: Hmmm--

Xavier: Oh! Did you notice that

all the other buildings around us

are BOX shaped?

Yadina: You're right!

Even the museum is all straight lines,

but not our designs!

Brad: Guess all our designs are wrong.

Well, what do we do now?

Oh-ah! I didn't mean to say that!!

Xavier/Yadina: [shouting] To the Secret Museum!

Brad: [long sigh]

I just had to ask...

[friendly chatter] ♪♪

♪♪

Xavier: I wonder who the Secret Museum will send us to meet?

Yadina: And where we'll go?

Brad: And when?

Xavier: Woaaah!

Yadina: Look out below!

Xavier: Woohoo! Brad: Whoa!

Xavier/Yadina: Hi, Berby! Berby: [bleep blarp]

Brad: Hi, Berby! Berby: [blurp]

Brad: Upf!

Xavier: [excited humming]

We're getting something!

Brad: It's a... clam?

Yadina: Kinda looks like a space ship.

Xavier: Uuh, maybe it's a space clam?

[computer whirring]

Xavier: [gasps] Look!

Zaha Hadid.

That's who we're going to meet.

Yadina: In Iraq, in the year .

Brad: [calculating] But that's...

oh, just over years ago!

Yadina: I wonder how Zaha Hadid can help us

with our clubhouse design?

Xavier: Only one way to find out...

Ready for adventure?

Yadina: Ready!

Brad: Ooooor we forget about building a clubhouse

and just hang out in this cozy box.

[jumping grunt]

[grunting]

[giggles]

[sigh] Okay, ready.

Berby: [bleep blarp bloop]

Yadina: Here we go!

Xavier: It's happening! Yadina: Hang on, Dr. Zoom!

Xavier: Wooohoo!

Brad: Whoaaa!

Berby: [bleep bleep blar bloop!]

♪♪

Trio: Ugh!

Xavier: Whoa! So this is Iraq in ...

[chuckles]

Bounce-bounce-bounce!

Bounce! [giggles]

Brad: We should've come here sooner.

I've never had such a soft landing! Aaaaah!

Zaha Hadid: [giggle]

I see you've found my family's furniture.

Well, our old furniture--

We're giving it away for another family to enjoy.

Brad: You're giving this away?

Why?! It's so bouncy.

Zaha: It IS good traditional furniture,

which means it's a lot like what most people have.

But we decided to get something a bit...different.

Uuu, here it is now!

Yadina: You're right, Dr. Zoom.

She looks familiar...

Berby: [whirring]

Xavier: It's Zaha Hadid!

Thanks, Berby.

Zaha: [gasps] Our new furniture.

It's all so different from anything I've seen before.

The bright colours, the smooth lines,

it's all so...unique.

I love it!

[gasps] Especially this mirror.

Xavier: Oh, look!

It's all lopsided.

Brad: But aren't mirrors supposed to be rectangles?

Zaha: Just because something is usually done one way,

doesn't mean it can't be done another.

I like to try things in my own unique way.

And I can't wait to decorate my bedroom with this mirror.

Hmmm...

I think I'd like to put the bed in a different spot.

Liiiike... here.

Xavier: We can help!

[kids grunting/straining] [bed scraping on floor]

[giggle]

Zaha: Hmm--

I think that should go there.

♪♪

That goes over there.

Add a bit more colour...

And flowy lines...

I think that should go over there.

Yadina: Woohoo! Brad: Faster, faster,faster!

Yadina/Xavier: [grunting] Xavier: This is heavy...

Brad! [giggles]

Zaha: ...and my new favourite part.

Hmm--

It's perfect!

Perfectly ME!

Yadina: [off screen] Zaha looks so happy.

Xavier: And I like it!

But... how does a bedroom make-over

help us design our clubhouse?

Brad: Maybe the Secret Museum thinks

we should just hang out in our bedrooms?

Berby: [blar bloop]

Yadina: I'd say that's a 'no'.

♪♪

[zap]

Yadina: Uaaah! Brad/Xavier: Upf!

Brad: Where are we? When are we?

Berby: [bloo bloop]

Xavier: Berby says we're at a school in London,

years later.

♪♪

Brad: Looks like it's a "how to draw square buildings" school.

Maybe we can learn how to design our clubhouse here.

Yadina: But...where's Zaha?

Xavier: [gasps] Look, there she is!

Zaha! Zaha: Hello!

Xavier: Oh, what are you doing here?

Zaha: Well, I liked re-designing my bedroom so much

and now I'm going to a special school

to learn how to be an architect.

Someone who designs whole buildings.

Brad: Whoa!

Like what they're drawing in there!

So, why are you out here?

Zaha: I like to try things in my own unique way.

Sitting out in nature helps me think

of what buildings COULD look like,

instead of what they do look like.

Yadina: What does that mean?

Zaha: Well, a little while ago my Dad took me

to al-Ahwar Marshes of southern Iraq.

I was amazed by how the homes there are designed to flow

with the nature around them...

Almost like they're a part of nature.

It changed the way I see structures.

Brad: So, nature inspires you

to design buildings

in your own unique way!

Yadina: That's definitely different

from the buildings around you.

Zaha: Exactly!

The world is not a rectangle,

so why should all the buildings be?

Well, I'd better get back to class.

Xavier/Yadina: Bye! Brad: Bye, Zaha!

Xavier: Zaha's design was SO unique.

[gasps] Kinda like our clubhouse designs.

Brad: But, do Zaha's designs actually get made?

♪♪

Yadina: I think we're about to find out...

♪♪

Whoa. Where are we now?

Berby: [bleep blar bloop]

Xavier: Berby says, we're at a brand new Olympic stadium,

years later.

Brad: Oooh! This building looks familiar...

Berby: [bloo bloop]

Yadina: It's the artifact from the Secret Museum!

Xavier: Guess it wasn't a space clam after all.

Brad/Xavier: [giggle]

Zaha: What do you think? I designed it myself.

Xavier: It's so unique!

Zaha: [chuckles] I do like to try things

in my own unique way.

You see, like water,

my design ideas don't break the rules of what's possible,

they bend them.

Like.. a.. CURVE!

Brad: Bending the rules...

So, maybe we don't have to make our clubhouse

look like all the others.

Yadina: We can make a clubhouse the way we want.

Xavier: Yes! Using my design of a tree!

Berby: [blar bloop]

Xavier: Or we could combine our ideas?

[giggles] Brad: Great idea!

Xavier: Zaha? Congratulations on your ah-mazing design.

Now, we have to go make one of our own.

Zaha: That's great! Have fun!

Brad: See ya, Zaha! Yadina: Bye!

Xavier: Berby, let's go home.

Berby: [blee blar bloop]

[zap] ♪♪

Brad: Uaaaah!

♪♪

Phew!

♪♪

[laughing]

♪♪

All: [giggle]

♪♪

Wow!

Xavier: So US!

Brad: It's...perfect!

All: [happy laughter]

Yadina: Aw, Dr. Zoom!

Looks super cool!

[shouts of glee and laughter]

Xavier: Yay!

Yadina: Meeting Zaha Hadid was SO inspiring.

She designed unique buildings

all over the world.

Brad: Her use of curves and flowing lines

earned her the nickname:

Queen of the Curve.

Xavier: And changed the way people think about

what a building is supposed to look like.

Yadina: Thanks for joiningour awesome adventure

to meet Zaha Hadid.

Brad: Who used to be a kid,

just like you and me.

Xavier: So kids like youcan change the world!

Yadina: I am Yadina.
