04x06 - Chapter 30: Doubt

Post by bunniefuu »

[Lidia] There's no worse feeling
than self-doubt.

Not knowing what to think or feel.

I'm Carmen Cifuentes.

My son took care of you
during the year you were in a coma.

But apart from that, we've got...

a common background.

A common background?

[Carmen] You were my husband's
right-hand man in the telephone company.

The best director we've ever had.

Hardworking, persistent, resourceful...

Those were good times.

You were like a son to us.

I wish I could remember that.

I understand how frustrated you feel.

We are nobody without our memories.

There's something I do remember.

She used to be a little girl back then,
but her image is stuck in my mind.

I can't stop saying her name.

Alba.

I can take you to see her,
if that's what you want.

[Sergio] I told you to hurry up.

- Where are we going?
- Stop with the questions.

- You k*lled Gregorio and...
- Hurry up.

- Marga! [muffled scream]
- [blow lands]

[Lidia] Doubt always puts you
in a dangerous place,

and it makes you vulnerable
to your enemies,

who won't hesitate
to take advantage of it.

[theme song playing]

A NETFLIX ORIGINAL SERIES

[Carmen] Francisco?

It fits you like a glove.

Now you look
like the Francisco we all knew.

Thanks for everything, Carmen.

For this suit, for letting me stay here...

- For everything.
- It's nothing.

Come on, our driver is waiting.

Alba is waiting for you in that bar.

You'll recognize her
as soon as you see her.

You are not coming with me?

I thought you'd prefer to be alone.

To be honest, I'm a bit nervous.

What if I don't recognize her?

All right. I will go in with you.
Then, I'll leave, okay?

César, wait for me here until I come back.

CHAPTER 30: DOUBT

Well, Francisco.

This is Alba.

Francisco...

It's me, Alba.

Do you remember me?

Francisco, the doctors said
you would recover your memory gradually.

I'll leave you two alone, okay?

I'm sure you have lots of things
to tell each other.

- Do you remember my address?
- Yes, I do. I'll manage to get back.

See you later, then.

Alba.

[chuckles]

Shall we sit down?

I've waited such a long time
for this moment.

- It looks like it worked.
- Excellent.

- And now what do you want me to do?
- Call Dr. Hamilton.

Tell him to start
all the preparations for the operation.

Has your son agreed to involve the girl?

My son doesn't need to know everything.

Is that clear?

Let's go, César.

[engine starts]

[gasps]

[breathing heavily]

Where are we?

[Sergio] Somewhere no one can find you.

- Help! Help!
- Shout as much as you want.

No one can hear you.

Are you going to k*ll me?

Don't rush things.

You're going to write a letter
to your friends

saying you can't take this anymore

and that you're going to Argentina
to start a new life.

- That way, they'll stop searching for you.
- They won't believe it.

They didn't believe you could commit
su1c1de and look what happened.

[scoffs]

It's the same thing you did with Dulce.

Force her to write a letter
and then k*ll her.

- You were getting too close.
- I won't write anything.

If you're going to k*ll me,
I won't make things easier for you.

[slams fists]

In that case,
Sara will pay the consequences.

I know you're planning her escape.

Do you know how terrible it'd be
if someone let the cat out of the bag?

They'd bring her execution forward.

Son of a bitch.

[whispers] Write!

I've been visiting you in the hospital
for an entire year,

and I never lost hope that you'd wake up.

[chuckles]

Are you okay?

I'm sorry, but I thought that,
after seeing you,

I'd feel something. That my memories
would come back. [chuckles]

To be honest, I look at you
and I don't even recognize you.

Carmen told me you remembered me
as a little girl, but... [chuckles]

- That was many years ago.
- Yes, too many, perhaps.

Maybe all this
wasn't a good idea after all.

No! Wait! Don't go.

Maybe we can talk about our past.
That might be helpful.

Sit.

What exactly do you remember about me?

- I remember being together on a train.
- [young Francisco] Run!

Give me your suitcase!

I remember I held your hand in that car.

[chuckles]

And I remember you resting your head
on my lap while I caressed your hair.

[Alba] I was thinking about all the things
I'm going to do when we get there.

- What are you going to do?
- Me?

I'm kissing that spot
you have on your neck.

I remember a beauty spot

- on the base of your neck.
- [gasps and chuckles]

- You're not Alba.
- [chuckles] What?

Of course I am. You're confused.

- Look, this is the beauty spot!
- It was on the neck.

I'm sure. You're not Alba.

This is very serious. Listen to me. Sit.

Are you or are you not Alba?

No more lies.
I just want to know the truth. Please.

[sighs] I'm sorry.

Mrs. Cifuentes paid me
to pass myself off as Alba.

- She told me what she knew about Alba...
- Why?

- Why did she lie?
- I don't know!

- [Francisco] You don't know?
- I swear I don't know!

- She said she wanted to help you.
- Help me?

- Yes!
- How?

- How?
- I don't know!

I don't know.
Please, don't tell her I told you.

If you do, she won't pay me. Please.

- [door closes]
- [sighs]

Mr. Francisco.

Long time no see.
I thought you were in the hospital.

- Yes, but I was discharged.
- I'm pleased to see you're well.

They made some major renovations
after the expl*si*n,

but it's still the building
you constructed.

Why don't you come in? Many workers
will be pleased to see you and greet you.

Come on in!

- Mr. Francisco, great to see you here.
- How are you?

Uh... I'm fine. Thanks.

[whispering indistinctly]

[man] Mr. Francisco!
It's nice to see you here.

- Are you feeling well?
- Quite well.

- You look great.
- Thanks.

[speaking indistinctly]

Alba...

[footsteps approaching]

Excuse me.
Do you know where I can find her?

Is it a bank or a usurer?

- The interest rate is ridiculous.
- I know. It was either this or nothing.

To be honest, I see no other way for us
to pay off the debt we have with Mother.

I'll study it when I have time.

Can't you do it now?

I'm going to the hospital
to see Francisco.

Doesn't Lidia usually go
at this time of day?

[doorbell rings]

[Carlos] That must be her.

[door opens and closes]

You haven't told her Francisco woke up?

[Asunción] Good evening, madam.

[Carmen] I'm here to visit my children.

What are you doing here?

Good evening to you, too, son.

You're not welcome in my home.

And you're lucky Lidia is not here.
She'd kick you out.

- So, please, go.
- No. I'm not leaving.

Not without talking to you first.

What do you want?

I wanted to ask if you have been informed
that Francisco has left the hospital.

- What are you talking about?
- He left. Only a few hours ago.

He applied for voluntary discharge
and, as he needed a place to stay,

I offered him my house.

Francisco is staying with you?

He took a nice shower, and now
he's having a rest in a proper bed.

- Not like the ones in the hospital.
- Don't listen to her, Carlos.

She's lying.

Phone my place, talk to him,
and you'll find out for yourselves.

[phone rings]

- [Francisco] Hello?
- [Carlos] So you are okay, then?

Yes, I'm okay.

I wanted to get out of that hospital.

Your mother offered to put me up.

I'm sorry I didn't tell you.

Don't worry. My mother did.

[Francisco] Is your mother there?

[Carlos] Yes, is something wrong?

[Francisco] No, it's nothing.

You just rest.
We'll talk more calmly later.

Bye, Francisco.

I like your home.

It's not my style, but it is cozy.

- What are you going to do with Francisco?
- [Carmen] I'm not a scoundrel, son.

Francisco is just fine.

The only thing
is that he doesn't remember.

I think you knew that already.

However, I was surprised
that the only person he remembers

is an old friend from his childhood...

Alba.

You didn't take Francisco
to see Lidia, did you?

Lidia still doesn't know
that Francisco has woken up? [chuckles]

For God's sake!
You're just like your father:

capable of lying
without feeling any guilt.

Don't you judge me.

My intention is to keep the secret,

and, on top of it,
I'm willing to forgive you the debt.

As long as you let me see Eva
from time to time.

Otherwise, I'll take Francisco
to see his beloved Alba.

[scoffs]

[Carmen] That way,
she'll discover that behind that smile

there is a cynical liar.

Knowing her, she will never forgive you.

Who do you think you are?

You can't come into my house
as if it was yours

and drop your poison just like that.

I won't give in, Mother.

- I don't trust you.
- Are you talking about Eva?

The girl is perfectly safe
with me, isn't she?

We had a great time the other day,
didn't we, Elisa?

- We came across her in the park.
- Hold on. Hold on.

Why didn't you tell me?

Because, as you can see,
we're all the same in this family.

She pressured me not to tell you.

- She's obsessed with Eva.
- Obsessed? Please.

[Elisa] Please. Are you going to deny it?

Yesterday she lost her temper

when I told her
she'd never see the child again.

And today she comes here to blackmail you
in order to get close to her again.

That's called obsession.

Why do you insist on seeing Eva
over and over again?

- Because I'm dying.
- [laughing] No! Please!

I can't believe it. Mother, enough lies.

She's trying to blackmail us again.

[Carmen] I have cancer.

They detected it when I was in prison.

That's why I was released
before I served the full sentence.

There is nothing the doctors can do

and they say I have only
a few months left.

I know I've lost you,

but that innocent girl is the only one
who has no hard feelings towards me,

who is not ashamed of me.

I want her to keep
great memories of her grandmother.

I don't care about this report.
I don't believe a word you say.

One doesn't use one's health
to play games.

[door unlocks]

It's Lidia.

Elisa, take her to the office
and be quiet.

[door closes]

Hello, honey.

Sorry I'm late.
I was talking to Ángeles, and...

- If you've already had dinner...
- No, I haven't. I was waiting for you.

We can ask Asunción
to prepare something for us.

Are you okay?

Yes.

I haven't seen you since this morning.
It doesn't make sense to get nervous,

as it's not the first time
we've talked about it,

or the second, for that matter...

Carlos, yes.

What do you mean, yes?

Let's get married.

My answer is yes.

[sighs]

Let's do this.

For us, for...

for our daughter.

- Are you sure?
- [chuckles] Yes!

Lately, I've been obsessed
with Francisco's issue...

and you've been infinitely patient.

I need to stay away from that hospital
for a while.

We deserve it. It's time to focus on us.

[chuckling]

- Let's have dinner out and celebrate.
- I want to give Eva a kiss first.

- Lidia.
- What?

Why wake her up?

[phone ringing]

Wait a minute.

Hello?

[operator] You have a call
from Ventas prison.

Put it through.

Óscar?

Lidia, thank God I've found you.

I've tried to talk to Carlota,
but I can't get through to the guesthouse.

We were going to call you tomorrow
first thing in the morning. We have news.

[Óscar] Me, too... And it is bad news.

They seized my blueprints.

I won't be able to reach
the communications center.

This place is different.

I'm with dangerous inmates
who don't take their eyes off me.

We got you some protection.

[Óscar] Protection?

[Lidia] An inmate.

They call her Candy.

She'll look for you tomorrow
in the courtyard.

You can trust her.
She'll make your life easier in there.

Okay.

What are we going to do
about the other thing?

I don't know.
Let me talk to the girls. I...

[sighs]

[Óscar] I have to hang up now.

Óscar, don't worry.

We'll do whatever it takes
to get you out of there.

[Carlos] What are you plotting?

Carlos, it's better
if you stay away from this.

What do you mean, stay away?

- I have to go see the girls.
- You're leaving?

I'm sorry, Carlos.

I'll be back soon.

I'm sorry.

[door opens and closes]

Where's Lidia?

- I accept the deal.
- What?

- Carlos, I don't think it's a good idea.
- [Carlos] Elisa, stay away from this.

You'll see the girl at home

when Lidia is not here
and always under my supervision.

- I knew you'd see reason.
- [Carlos] Did you hear me?

I did.

Just one thing before I go...

Can I kiss Eva goodbye?

Show that toy to Grandma. Show it to me.

You're so pretty!

Can I see that toy? Can you show it to me?

Can I see it, baby?

I never imagined someone's ambition
could lead them to do this.

- Not even Gregorio's.
- Ambition? [scoffs]

Gregorio was a repugnant person.
Much more than you can imagine.

I'm also a victim here!

He framed me and blackmailed me
just to win the election.

[Sergio] You can get your revenge
when you meet him in the next world.

[g*n cocking]

[breathing heavily]

But I thought...

- he was like a father to you.
- A father?

That man deserved to die.
He ruined my life.

What did he do to you, Sergio?

[breathing shakily]

The day you turned up at the hotel...

was the chance I had been waiting for.

[door closes]

[Gregorio breathing heavily] Sergio?

What are you doing here?
Call a doctor, please!

[groans and coughs]

I can't breathe!

[gasping] Call a doctor, please.

Call for help.

[choking]

Does the name Alicia Reyes ring a bell?

[groans]

[Sergio] It doesn't, right?

You got her pregnant 30 years ago
and abandoned her like a dog.

Let me out of here, Sergio.

My name is not Sergio!

[Gregorio groaning]

You...

I'm the bastard son
of a disgraceful son of a bitch!

[voice breaking] You have no idea
what I had to go through.

Please... Do you need money?
What do you want?

I can give you my surname.

I need to breathe. Help!

Help!

- [stabbing]
- [Gregorio grunting]

- [groaning]
- [Sergio sobbing]

He offered me his surname.

He knew his fate
and he wanted to escape from it.

But he'd been already sentenced.

I've never had anything in life.

[Carlota] Let me help you.
This can only bring you more trouble.

[whispering] We need to talk, Marga.
Marga, please.

Pablo, what are you doing here?

- What are you doing in my room?
- I'm sorry, Marga. I had to...

I need to talk to you.

Listen, Marga, I...

Since I heard you're going
to risk your neck for Sara...

I...

- I've been thinking...
- Pablo, I'm freezing.

- Do you mind if I put my nightdress on?
- Sure.

- Of course.
- Don't peek.

No, of course.

If you're here to persuade me
not to help my friends, that won't work.

No, I know that's hopeless.

Actually, I...

- I'm here to talk...
- I'm ready.

- [Pablo] Um...
- I'm ready.

I'm here...

to talk about us.

- About us?
- About us.

[chuckles] Well, I mean...
I know there's no "us" right now.

I mean, the former...

"us."

[sighs] Marga, I think...

there are things about our marriage
we left unsaid.

[chuckles] This is more difficult
than I thought.

- I feel...
- Pablo, just calm down.

Tell me whatever is consuming you.

- I won't judge you.
- Yes, I'm trying to.

- I just can't find the right words.
- But I know what you're going to say.

- You do?
- Yeah.

And it's not as bad as you think.

Yes, it is.

I think it's the key that explains
why our marriage didn't work.

Well, yes, it definitely is.

- You think so, too?
- Pablo, if you like men,

it's normal that our marriage didn't work.

- I can't give you what you need.
- What?

Being a h*m* is not a bad thing.

If our marriage helped you
find your real self

- and be happy, then it's okay.
- Marga. Marga.

- I don't like men.
- Okay...

Marga, I like women.

I've always liked women.

Blond,

dark-haired, tall, short, country girls...

Pablo, you're in denial.

- You have to accept yourself.
- There she goes again.

Marga, I like women! Why do you say...

In fact, I was peeking.
I was looking at you just now.

- You peeked?
- Yeah, in the mirror.

But don't change the subject.
Marga, why do you... How can you...

If there is someone who shouldn't have
any doubts about that, it's you.

Well, the truth is,
this was Antonio's idea, and...

And it made sense!

- Antonio?
- Yes.

If you're not a h*m*, then...

- [Ángeles] Marga!
- What did you want to say?

- I'm sorry. I didn't mean to interrupt.
- [Pablo] No, I was already leaving.

[Marga] No, Pablo, wait!

- [Lidia] Is everything all right?
- Yeah. Well, I don't know.

What?

What did you want to tell me?

Óscar phoned me from jail.

The guards seized the Bible
with the blueprints in it.

And what are we going to do?

We either come up with some other way
to deliver the blueprints to him

or think of a new escape plan.

We need to talk to Carlota.

Yes.

Where is she?

[Marga] She's been
locked in her room all day.

Well, she's not here.

She took all her clothes.

That's weird.

Maybe she went to visit her mom.

I don't think so.
With Óscar in jail, that makes no sense.

She would have told us.

What's this?

What is it?

It's a cuff link.

- It has an engraving.
- [Marga] Hmm.

"G.D."?

"Gregorio Díaz."

Do you think this cuff link is his?

I don't know.

But I know someone who'll know.

- [Mercedes] Hi.
- Hi.

Thank you for coming
on such a short notice.

I owed your friend Carlota.

With this letter I received,

- I accused her unfairly.
- Luckily, everything was cleared up.

But now we need your help with something.

Anything.

[Lidia] Do you recognize this?

Sure.

This is one of Gregorio's cuff links.

Why do you have it?

- Our friend has disappeared.
- What?

[Lidia] We found it in Carlota's room.

Do you have any idea
how it could have ended up there?

I gave Sergio
these cuff links after the funeral.

I thought he'd like to keep them
as a memento.

They were so close.

But I don't know
how it could have ended up there.

It was him.

All this time, it was him.

Don't you see?

Everything adds up.

Sergio is the one who benefits the most
from Gregorio's death.

He's the new candidate of his party.

He wanted to take his position
and he managed to do it.

That's why he tried
to blame Carlota for the m*rder,

to get her out of the way, too.

He's been using us.

- He's always been a step ahead of us.
- Hang on a second.

Are you saying Sergio k*lled my husband?

And he might have abducted our friend.

What are we going to do?

We have to find her before it's too late.

- Cristóbal...
- [Cuevas] What's going on?

- Sergio Andrade has abducted Carlota.
- What?

- We can't find her. This was in her room.
- It's Gregorio Díaz's.

The widow gave it to Sergio
after her husband's death.

We believe he is behind
Gregorio and Dulce's murders.

That's nonsense.
It's an accusation without proof.

The cuff link could have gotten there
a thousand ways.

Sergio is the new mayoral candidate.

He's the only one
who benefits directly from all this.

- That doesn't make him a m*rder*r.
- It does make sense.

k*lling Gregorio
and framing Carlota for the m*rder.

That way, he'd get rid of his rivals,
committing the perfect crime.

Ms. Sara Millán
has confessed to everything.

Hasn't she?

All this speculation makes no sense.

That's not for you to decide.

Santana, send some officers
to Mr. Andrade's home.

Maybe there's some evidence there.

[Ángeles] Count on us.

[Cuevas] That's what I'm doing,
but we need to be safe here.

Sergio, please. Listen to me.

If you and your friends
had stuck to the plan,

everything would've been over by now.

But you didn't.
So now I have to dirty my hands again.

Sergio, please! Don't!

- [tires screech]
- [car door closes]

- Help! Help me! [muffled scream]
- Keep your mouth shut!

[knocking on door]

Salas, what are you doing here?

You've abducted Carlota?

She was going to denounce me.
I had no choice.

They've found one of your cuff links
in her room. They're looking for you.

You're so reckless and stupid!

- You won't get away with it this time.
- [grunts]

What are you doing?

You're not dragging me along with you.

Are you going to k*ll me?

You're going to arrest me.

You leave me no option.

You've gone too far, Sergio.

What will you tell Captain Cuevas
when he finds out that you knew everything

- and that you helped me?
- Don't be so pathetic.

- You're not in a position to thr*aten me.
- I have proof and nothing to lose.

I paid you a lot of money.

Put that g*n down.
I just need a little more time.

I'll finish Carlota off
and I'll leave the city.

No one will hear from me again,

and you'll be able to carry on with
your life as an honest police officer.

- Salas, I can pay you much more money.
- [Salas] No.

- [Sergio] If you help me escape...
- [Salas] Forget it!

This is your own doing.
You're on your own.

You have an hour to sort this out.

Or I'll tell them where you are.

Do you hear me?

[car door closes]

[phone rings]

[officer] Captain Cuevas?

It's Ms. Carlota.

Trace the call.

Carlota, are you okay?

[Carlota] Sergio Andrade
abducted me. He's...

Gregorio's m*rder*r. We know.

- Where are you?
- [Carlota] I don't know.

- This looks like a basement, and...
- And where is he now?

[stutters] I hit him
in the head and he's...

he's...

He's unconscious on the floor.
I hit him with a...

- [blow lands]
- [Carlota exclaims]

[Cuevas] Carlota?

She called from this address.

We're leaving. There's no time to waste.
Let's go!

- [Lidia] Girls, hurry.
- [officer] Take your weapons.

[Ángeles] God,
I hope we get there in time.

[gasps]

- The police are on their way here.
- They don't know where you are.

They will trace the call.

An operator can tell them
where it was made from.

They know everything.
They know you're the m*rder*r.

There is no evidence against me.

Your friend Sara confessed to everything.
She will pay for all of it.

How will you get away with this?

This time it's about me.
You've abducted me,

- and the police are after you.
- Shut up. I need to think.

[scoffs] You don't have time to think.
Don't you see?

If you k*ll me, it'll be much worse.
It's over.

I told you to shut up!

You made a mistake.
You underestimated me and my friends.

Shut up!

[Carlota] You've dug your own grave.

You've made too many mistakes
and had too many doubts and fears.

[sobbing] Shut up! Shut up! Shut up!

They must be here.

[Lidia] Doubt crosses your mind
only for a second.

But sometimes a second is enough
to tip the scales one way or the other.

[g*nsh*t]

A life hanging by a thread...

That night, doubt saved our friend
and led Sergio to choose the easy way out.

- [Carlota whimpers]
- [Lidia whispers] Carlota, are you okay?

- What happened?
- [Cuevas] Is she okay?

[Lidia] What happened? Are you okay?

[Carlota] He sh*t himself.

[Cuevas] Operator, put me through
to the police headquarters.

[Lidia] Our doubt then was

whether this tragedy would stop us
from achieving our main goal:

getting Óscar out of prison.

[car honks]

- [Lidia] Take this. You'll feel better.
- Thanks.

[Marga] You must've been so scared.

I can't even imagine it.

Do you know where I drew strength from?

Thinking that if Sergio was proven
to be guilty, Óscar would not be ex*cuted.

I can't believe all this
is going to be useless.

I can't believe
the judge didn't listen to reason.

Now that Sergio is dead, there's no way
to prove he k*lled Gregorio and Dulce.

The judge has found a culprit already.

We have no evidence
to make him change his mind.

We can still carry on with the escape plan
to get Óscar out of jail.

Carlota, things have changed a bit.

What do you mean?

Óscar was put in a ward
for dangerous inmates.

They seized his Bible
with the blueprints when he was admitted.

We're going to need a new plan.

I can't believe this.

Lidia and I have discussed it and there is
only one way to get him out of there.

How?

We need someone we can trust
who can move freely within the prison.

- [Ángeles] Someone we can trust.
- Do you have anyone in mind?

[doorbell rings]

- Hello, Cristóbal.
- Hi.

- How's Carlota?
- She's feeling better.

- Come on in.
- I'm glad to hear that.

- She's been so brave.
- Yeah.

But that's not why we called you.
We need to talk to you. Follow me.

You want to help Sara escape from prison.

- Don't you?
- How did you know?

These are the blueprints Sara tried
to sneak in hidden inside a Bible.

Since Lidia denounced Sara, I suspected
you were plotting something.

I asked a contact of mine
to keep a close eye on her.

You've ruined our escape plan.

Do you know what would have happened
if another prison guard had found this?

She would have been ex*cuted immediately.

What you've done is foolish.

If someone had found out
you're behind this,

you would be in jail right now.

Exactly, Cristóbal.

We need your help.

Cristóbal, we trust you.
We know you're an honest man.

Don't you think it's unfair that Sara
is paying for a crime she didn't commit?

It is. Really unfair.

- But there's nothing we can do for Sara.
- His name is not Sara. His name is Óscar.

He put his life at risk
by confessing a crime he didn't commit,

just to protect me and save my life.

- It's a great proof of love.
- It is. And I owe this to him.

- That's why I'm asking you for a chance.
- You're asking me to break the law.

Sometimes, the only way to do justice
is to go against the law.

[Ángeles] Please, Cristóbal.

Please.

Please.

We need you.

[Lidia] Doubt always comes
before a decision.

Fine.

I'll help you.

But you need to do as I say.

- We will.
- Once the decision has been made,

doubt vanishes and one has to act
according to the new chosen path.

[kissing]

But when after reaching a decision
doubts still remain,

one must worry about it.

Because a doubt is only revived

when that decision goes against
what the heart yearns for.

Only your heart knows
what you really want.

Madam, someone is waiting for you
in the living room.

Thank you.

So when you finally have what you desire
in front of you, all doubts vanish.

- Alba...
- [Lidia] And the only thing that remains

is the certainty that from that point on,
you can start to be happy.
