11x15 - Crossing the Battle Line!

NARRATOR: Immediately upon their arrival in Veilstone City,

our heroes came across Paul's older brother Reggie,

a Pokémon Breeder, and then Maylene,

the Veilstone City Gym Leader!

But after her loss to Paul in a Gym battle,

Maylene was considering quitting as Gym Leader,

despite protests from Reggie and her Lucario!

Then, sympathizing with Maylene's plight,

Dawn suddenly surprised everybody

by challenging Maylene to a Gym battle!

DAWN: Now hold on!

DAWN: Excuse me, but I asked Maylene for a battle first!

PIPLUP: [EMPHATIC] PIKACHU: [SURPRISED]

MAYLENE: Hey Dawn?

Mind if we have our battle tomorrow? I'll be at the Gym.

MAYLENE: I just need a little time to get myself ready first!

LUCARIO: [SKEPTICAL]

DAWN: Of course! I don't mind at all! Tomorrow it is!

PIPLUP: [DETERMINED]

On a road, far from home,

DAWN: Now Piplup, keep an eye on how Buizel moves!

REGGIE: Hey Ash!

REGGIE: Don't you think we should get started too?

ASH: Yeah, right there! Good luck with your battle Dawn!

BROCK: Dawn, have you decided which Pokémon

you're going to use?

DAWN: Well Maylene's using Fighting-type Pokémon,

so I've decided to start with Piplup,

since it can use a Flying-type move!

DAWN: Next I'll take advantage of

all that battle experience Ambipom got with Ash.

DAWN: then Buneary with its awesome jumping skills!

BROCK: Sounds good to me!

ASH: Staravia up!

STARAVIA: [AFFIRMATIVE]

STARAVIA: [GREETING]

REGGIE: Now watch closely.

ASH: You've got it!

REGGIE: Staraptor, let's go, use Brave Bird!

STARAPTOR: [BRAVE BIRD MOVE]

STARAPTOR: [BATTLE CRY]

STARAPTOR: [IMPACT]

ASH, GLIGAR, STARAVIA: [SHOCK]

STARAPTOR: [BATTLE CRY]

ASH: Man, what power!

REGGIE: Right, but you have to be careful

because using power that strong takes its toll

on Staraptor as well!

REGGIE: Brave Bird tests the mettle

of both Pokémon and Trainer!

ASH: Then that means me!

REGGIE: Are you scared Ash?

ASH: No way!

REGGIE: Good! Then let's give it a try!

ASH: Right!

ASH: Okay, Staravia! Brave Bird now!

STARAVIA: [BRAVE BIRD MOVE]

STARAVIA: [RATTLED]

STARAVIA: [GRUNT]

ASH: Staravia!

ASH: Staravia, are you okay?

GLIGAR: [CONCERNED]

STARAVIA: [REASSURING]

REGGIE: Looks like Staravia lost its balance

right at the moment of power release.

REGGIE: Now maybe if we were to use a moving target

instead of a rock,

we could work on improving Staravia's concentration.

REGGIE: But what moving target?

ASH: Hey, I'll be the target!

REGGIE: But that could be dangerous, Ash!

ASH: Anything to make Staravia stronger! Staravia, you ready?

STARAVIA: [AFFIRMATIVE]

STARAVIA: [READY]

ASH: All right, let's do it!

STARAVIA: [BRAVE BIRD MOVE]

STARAVIA: [DETERMINED]

ASH: Yeah, way to go Staravia! Just like that!

STARAVIA: [BATTLE CRY]

ASH: Looking good, Staravia. One more time!

DAWN: Ash sure is something! Let's show him what we can do!

[ENTHUSIASTIC]

STARAVIA: [BATTLE CRY]

ASH: That power's starting to build up! One more time!

ELECTABUZZ: [SHOCKED]

ASH: Come on!

STARAVIA: [BRAVE BIRD MOVE]

BROCK: Pretty typical training for Ash!

REGGIE: I kind of feel like I should stop him.

REGGIE: He's just the opposite of my brother!

REGGIE: Hey, so what's the story with Dawn, Brock?

BROCK: Oh, she's ready to go all right!

REGGIE: But why would a Coordinator fight a Gym Battle?

REGGIE: She just doesn't seem like the type

to do contests and battles!

BROCK: I honestly think Dawn's going through all of this

to help Maylene get her confidence back!

BROCK: Dawn knows Maylene's a little shaky right now,

and she really wants her to rediscover

her love for battling!

LUCARIO: [FRUSTRATED]

MAYLENE: Come on, Lucario. Don't be angry!

I know just how you feel!

I'm going to take this challenge very seriously!

CONNALLY: Yes! Exactly what we want to hear Master!

MAYLENE: Will you be my referee tomorrow, Connally?

CONNALLY: Yes, yes!

JAMES, SING SONGY: Seek and ye shall find.

MEOWTH: Lucario! Let's grab it!

JESSIE, JAMES: Give me a break!

JESSIE: One grab and Lucario will break you!

WOBBUFFET: [AFFIRMATIVE]

-MEOWTH: Yeah! -JAMES: Touché.

JAMES: This is a Gym Leader's Pokémon we're pursuing.

JESSIE: Since every time we try to poach primo Pokémon

we fail miserably, I suggest Plan B!

MEOWTH: And what might Plan B be?

JESSIE: Simple! We grab a weaker Pokémon to train

to our sneaky hearts' content! Then Plan B becomes Plan A!

JAMES: It does?

MEOWTH: The last time I made a jump like that,

I ended up falling off of a cliff!

WOBBUFFET: [AFFIRMATIVE]

DAWN: Ash how's Staravia doing?

ASH: Awesome!

Even Reggie's amazed at how quick Staravia's getting it!

ASH: How about you?

DAWN: We're doing great,

thanks to Buizel and Pikachu, of course!

PIKACHU: [FLATTERED]

PIPLUP: [PLEASED]

DAWN: This is my first Gym Battle,

and I have to admit that I've got a case of nerves!

ASH: Hey, every time I have a Gym Battle

I start getting sweaty and my heart starts pounding,

and it feels like there's a train going through my head!

PIKACHU: [AGREEING]

ASH: Wow, you're really treating this like a real Gym Battle!

DAWN: You bet!

Of course, now I understand exactly what you mean!

ASH: I really hope it helps Maylene

to get her confidence back soon!

DAWN: Yeah!

BROCK: I used to feel exactly the same

wayback at the Pewter Gym.

DAWN: That's right! I remember you used to be a Gym Leader!

BROCK: A Gym Leader's biggest priority

is to bring out the very best in their Pokémon!

BROCK: When I first started,

I was worried about what I was doing,

but after meeting lots of Trainers,

I learned the most important thing of all.

-ASH: And what's that? -BROCK: Truth is,

great Gym Leaders are shaped by their challengers!

BROCK: Through all of those Gym Battles.

DAWN: Did you hear that?

ASH: Hey, I think I get it!

So Dawn's battle could really help Maylene go up a level!

BROCK: That's it!

By the way, Reggie said he'd be there tomorrow.

It's going to be great!

ASH: Yeah. Sure will!

PIKACHU: [EXCITED]

DAWN: Thanks!

PIPLUP: [APPRECIATIVE]

JAMES: Wired and ready!

JAMES: I've got cameras cranking all over that jumping Gym!

JAMES: Which means soon we'll have eyes peeled

on every Pokémon in the place!

MEOWTH: Oh, come on! Not the Twerps!

JESSIE: Don't those punks have enough Pokémon?

WOBBUFFET: [EXASPERATED]

JAMES: Twerps don't thieve! They're here to battle!

DAWN: I challenge you!

ASH: Awesome! You challenge a Gym with a big loud voice!

JESSIE: What? A Twerpette challenge?

JAMES: Wow, what shifted her gears?

MEOWTH: I thought she was a contest creature!

MAYLENE: Sorry to keep you waiting. Welcome!

DAWN: Thank you! And thanks for accepting my challenge!

MAYLENE: I think we should be the ones thanking you!

LUCARIO: [AGREEING]

REGGIE: Well, here we go!

ASH: Yeah!

CONNALLY: So! The Gym Battle between Dawn, the challenger,

and Maylene, the Gym Leader, is about to begin!

CONNALLY: Each side will use three Pokémon

and the challenge will be over when all three Pokémon

on one side are unable to battle!

CONNALLY: Also, throughout this battle

only the challenger will be allowed to substitute Pokémon!

MAYLENE: Now, let's begin! Go Meditite!

MEDITITE: [APPEARING]

DAWN: Wow, Meditite's her first choice!

POKEDEX: Meditite. The Meditate Pokémon.

Meditite uses meditation to increase its power,

never skipping a single day of yoga training.

BROCK: Alright! Dawn's battling a Psychic-type Pokémon!

ASH, REGGIE, BROCK, ASH: So now it's Dawn's turn!

PIKACHU: [SURPRISED]

ASH: Whoa. What's wrong with her?

DAWN: Wow, this is some pressure!

A lot different than a contest.

DAWN: Sitting on the sidelines is a lot different

than standing down here!

DAWN: I wonder if I'm ready for this.

REGGIE: Uh oh. Looks like Dawn's getting nervous!

ASH: Hey Dawn! Have fun out there!

ASH: Maylene! Remember you're a Gym Leader

-so show your strength! -DAWN: Whoa. But Ash?

MAYLENE: Oh my. Thanks very much Ash! Okay Dawn!

Let's do this! Whenever you're ready!

DAWN: Right! This is gonna be fun! Buneary, let's go!

BUNEARY: [APPEARING]

BUNEARY: [CHANTING]

PIKACHU: [CHEERING]

BUNEARY: [CHANTING]

DAWN: All right. Let's get this over with nice and quick!

MAYLENE: Meditite! Let's make this an early day!

MEDITITE: [AFFIRMATIVE]

ASH: Ready for this Pikachu?

PIKACHU: [AFFIRMATIVE]

REGGIE: Wow, Ash did the trick!

BROCK: Well I'm not surprised!

Ash has a knack for instilling confidence, for sure!

CONNALLY: So! The first att*ck goes to the challenger!

CONNALLY: Now! Let the battle begin!

DAWN: Buneary, use Bounce!

BUNEARY: [LAUNCHING]

BUNEARY: [BOUNCE MOVE]

BUNEARY: [BATTLE CRY]

MAYLENE: Detect!

MEDITITE: [DETECT MOVE]

BUNEARY: [SURPRISED]

ASH: It dodged!

BUNEARY: [CRASHING]

BROCK: It's called Detect because it detects

and then avoids your opponent's move.

ASH: She must've practiced it

so she'd be ready to battle Flying-type Pokémon.

MAYLENE: All right, now it's my turn! Use Drain Punch!

MEDITITE: [DRAIN PUNCH MOVE]

ASH: Maylene and Meditite are moving in sync!

REGGIE: That's just the way Maylene does it.

Since she's a warrior, she mirrors her Pokémon's moves,

which makes herself stronger!

REGGIE: She literally becomes one with her Pokémon!

DAWN: Spin and dodge it!

BUNEARY: [SPINNING] ASH, DAWN, PIKACHU: [CONCERNED]

BUNEARY: [PAINED]

MEDITITE: [DETERMINED]

BUNEARY: [CRASHING]

DAWN: Buneary! You okay?

BUNEARY: [EFFORT]

ASH: Even with that spin, they still got stuck!

BROCK: If Drain Punch makes contact

it can suck away a lot of power from your opponent.

REGGIE: It's obvious that Maylene

is much more accustomed to battling!

REGGIE: If Maylene keeps this up...

REGGIE: I'm afraid it's going to be a rough day for Dawn.

JAMES: That Drain Punch Meditite

managed packed a crunch of a punch!

MEOWTH: So do you think that dynamo classifies as Plan B?

JESSIE: Perhaps, but I think we're better off with Plan C.

WOBBUFFET: [AFFIRMATIVE]

DAWN: Don't give up, Buneary! Ice Beam let's go!

BUNEARY: [ICE BEAM MOVE]

ASH: Bull's eye! PIKACHU: [EXCITED]

DAWN: Okay. Now's our chance!

BUNEARY: [DETERMINED]

MAYLENE: All right, Meditite. Confusion!

MEDITITE: [CONFUSION MOVE]

BUNEARY, ASH, PIKACHU: [CONCERNED]

DAWN: Dodge it!

BUNEARY: [DODGING]

MAYLENE: Once again,Meditite. Confusion!

MAYLENE: All right! To the ground!

MAYLENE: Meditite that was excellent!

MEDITITE: [SOLEMN]

DAWN: Thank you, Buneary.

DAWN: All of your hard work won't be wasted!

AMBIPOM: [APPEARING]

ASH: Get them, Ambipom!

AMBIPOM: [AFFIRMATIVE]

DAWN: Ambipom, Swift, let's go!

AMBIPOM: [SWIFT MOVE]

MEDITITE: [PAINED]

ASH: Well, all right!

MAYLENE: Meditite! Drain Punch!

MEDITITE: [DRAIN PUNCH MOVE]

DAWN: Block it, quick!

REGGIE: Wow!

DAWN: All right, Double Hit!

MAYLENE: Interesting. LUCARIO: [SURPRISED]

MAYLENE: It seems you approach a battle like a contest!

DAWN: I guess so! And I'm having a lot of fun doing it!

MAYLENE: But our next go around won't be so easy!

MAYLENE: Lucario, you ready to go?

MAYLENE: Lucario, don't be taken in by her contest-like moves!

REGGIE: Exactly!

When Maylene and Lucario are working perfectly in sync,

let's just say I defy anyone to find any kind of opening!

REGGIE: It looks like Dawn has reawakened Maylene's passion

for battling and ignited her team spirit!

DAWN: She's a Gym Leader all right. Incredible strength!

DAWN: But, I'm not exactly a beginner either!

DAWN: Now, Piplup, you're up next!

DAWN: I wouldn't think of doing anything else! Bubble Beam!

REGGIE, BUILDING: Using contest techniques

to cover their bad matchup. Nice strategy!

MAYLENE: Lucario, quick! Metal Claw, right now!

PIPLUP: [DODGING]

-DAWN: Awesome move! -MAYLENE: Hey, you too!

ASH: They're both looking great!

PIKACHU: [AGREEING]

REGGIE: Maylene and Lucario are totally in sync

REGGIE: and it has everything to do with

Dawn's passionate battling style stirring things up!

DAWN: Now, Piplup, Bubble Beam!

MAYLENE: Lucario, let's go!

ASH: Whoa, what kind of move was that?

PIKACHU: [SHOCKED] REGGIE: Force Palm.

Force Palm's a Fighting-type move.

REGGIE: First, you get past your opponent's defense,

and then hit them with massive energy focused in your palm!

DAWN: She's some Gym Leader. What strength!

JESSIE: Drat! Stuck on the horns of a dilemma!

JAMES: Sounds like you're back to pursuing Plan A!

JESSIE: No duh! Lucario's primo!

MEOWTH: Of course, if we try and poach that primo,

we'll get a primo pounding!

WOBBUFFET: [AFFIRMATIVE]

PIPLUP: [RALLYING]

DAWN: All right Piplup! That's the way it's done!

LUCARIO: [IMPRESSED]

MAYLENE: You're right, Lucario!

MAYLENE: How much fun is this battle?

MAYLENE: It's been awhile since I felt so good!

REGGIE: Wonder if this Maylene would've been beaten by Paul?

MAYLENE: Now Lucario! Use Aura Sphere!

DAWN: Piplup, Peck!

PIPLUP: [PECK MOVE]

MAYLENE, LUCARIO: [SURPRISED]

PIPLUP: [IMPACT] LUCARIO: [IMPACT]

MAYLENE: You okay?

LUCARIO: [AFFIRMATIVE]

DAWN: Since Peck is a Flying-type move,

it's a good match against the Fighting-type Aura Sphere!

DAWN: Of course that means, we can still win this thing!

LUCARIO: [INSPIRED]

MAYLENE: All right, let's do that!

MAYLENE: We'll break down their combinations!

MAYLENE: Now Aura Sphere, once more!

DAWN: Piplup, use Bubble Beam!

PIPLUP: [BUBBLEBEAM MOVE]

DAWN: And now use Peck!

PIPLUP: [AFFIRMATIVE]

PIPLUP: [SURPRISED]

-DAWN: Look out! -MAYLENE: Force Palm!

REGGIE, BROCK, ASH, PIKACHU: [TENSE]

CONNALLY: So, Piplup is unable to battle!

CONNALLY: Which means, the winner of this battle

is the Gym Leader, Maylene!

DAWN: Piplup!

ASH: I guess that's it.

PIKACHU: [DISAPPOINTED]

BROCK: But hey, for her first Gym Battle, Dawn was great!

MAYLENE: Lucario, thanks so much!

LUCARIO: [PLEASED]

DAWN: Thank you, Piplup. You battled hard!

PIPLUP: [WHIMPERING]

ASH: You both battled hard!

DAWN: Thanks, but we lost!

ASH: Come on, Dawn! That was an awesome battle!

You sure got me psyched for my next challenge!

PIKACHU: [EXCITED]

JAMES: Gobs of grunt work and we already knew Lucario was tops!

JESSIE: All those cameras

and not a trace of alternate Pokémon in sight!

MEOWTH: You know folks, technology's groovy

but what do you say we use our feet to check out the scene?

JESSIE, JAMES, MEOWTH: Keen!

WOBBUFFET: [AFFIRMATIVE]

MAYLENE: I don't know how to thank you Dawn.

MAYLENE: I forgot all about my fears

and about winning or losing!

All I could think about was how much fun it was.

MAYLENE: Wow, it sure felt like old times.

LUCARIO: [AGREEING]

DAWN: That really means so much to me!

Hey, and I'll bet you'll have at least as much fun

when you have a battle with Ash!

MAYLENE: That's right. I guess I forgot

DAWN: A battle between you two will be a real Gym Battle!

MAYLENE: Okay, I'm starting to get the whole picture now!

MAYLENE: And I realize I've got to stay on as Gym Leader.

Especially after you reminded me

of just how much fun a great battle can be!

ASH: That's the spirit, Maylene!

PIKACHU: [PRAISING]

LUCARIO: [SOLEMN]

BROCK: Your strategy really paid off!

DAWN: Yeah! And soon Piplup, we'll both be

up in the bleachers cheering for Ash, right?

PIPLUP: [EXCITED]

REGGIE: I can guarantee you'll have a great timeup

against Ash's battling style!

MAYLENE: If that's the case

I've got another fun battle to look forward to!

ASH: Great! And once my Staravia perfects that new move,

you can be sure I'll be right back here to challenge you!

PIKACHU: [CONFIDENT]

MAYLENE: Good! LUCARIO: [AGREEING]
