- Whoa, happy clapping! - Barney!

- Oh hi, Gianna, hello, Nick.

Both of you were really clapping!

- There's going to be a band here

tonight giving a concert.

- And they're coming this afternoon to practice!

- A band?

A real root-toot-toot band?

- Uh huh, we'll be clapping after each song they play,

so we've been practicing.

(clapping)

- But if they play something really neat,

I'm going to clap like this!

- Hoo hoo, oh, yeah, cool!

- Ooh this sounds exciting!

Who's playing at this concert?

- You remember that Mr. Boyd plays in a band, don't you?

- Yep, he plays different kinds of horns.

- Right, well he asked one, two, three, four, five,

of his friends from the band to play songs tonight.

- [Barney] Oh wow. - And they all play horns.

- Ooh, there's nothing like the sweet sound of a horn.

(trumpet blowing)

- What was that?

(Angela blowing trumpet)

- Hi Angela, hi there.

- Hi guys, hi Barney.

- Hi. - Wow, cool Angela!

I didn't know you could play the trumpet.

- That's the problem, I can't.

- I just started taking lessons

and I'm not doing very well.

- Oh but if you're practicing,

and trying the very best you can,

I'm sure you'll soon play beautifully!

- Oh, I hope so, Barney.

- Is the band here?

- Not yet.

- Oh I can't wait to see them,

because someday I want to play in a band too.

- And I'm sure you will.

(lively music)

(Barney chuckling)

Good job, everybody!

- Really, I do want to play

in a marching band someday, Barney.

Sometimes I close my eyes

and I can just imagine hearing the drums.

(drums playing)

Like that.

- You're not imagining those drums.

- I'm not?

- Look.

- [Children] BJ!

- [Barney] Oh hi, BJ!

- Hi everybody.

- Good drumming.

- What's happening?

- We're waiting for a brass band to come

and practice for their concert tonight.

- Oh cool, what's a brass band?

- A brass band is a band that plays only horns

and most horns are made

of a gold-colored metal, called brass.

- Like my trumpet.

- [Barney] Right.

- Aww, too bad they don't need a drummer.

I think drums are the coolest musical instrument.

- Oh I like the drums too BJ,

but I must say I love to hear those horns.

(horns playing)

(BJ sighing in amazement)

- Like that.

- I think that music is coming from the caboose, Barney!

- Oh, boy!

- Maybe it's the band warming up.

- They might want a drummer after all, come on!

- Oh I can't wait to hear what's next, oh boy.

(soft music)

- Huh, say do you guys need a drummer?

where'd they go, Mr. Boyd?

- [Children] Hi, Mr. Boyd.

- Hello, Barney, BJ, hi kids.

Who were you looking for, BJ?

- We heard some horn music coming from here.

- We thought the brass band

might be practicing already.

- And I wanted to ask if they needed a drummer.

(BJ drumming)

- I'm sorry BJ, that wasn't a band.

That was me, playing his French Horn.

- Oh, well it sounded really cool!

- Well, thanks.

- Wow, look at these cool horns!

- Awesome. - There are so many.

- It's kind of like a petting zoo.

You see, most musical instruments

aren't toys to be played with,

but folks who come to the concert tonight

will be able to look at these horns up-close,

hold them, even try them out.

- Oh that's great.

- They all look so different.

- And each one sounds very different too, Gianna.

- The trumpet sounds like this.

(Angela blowing the trumpet)

(BJ sighing in amazement)

(Barney chuckling)

- [Barney] Oh boy. - Wow.

- Very nice, Angela!

That was a perfect trumpet note.

- It sure was.

- And this French horn has a soft, mellow sound.

(Mr. Boyd playing the French horn)

(BJ sighing in amazement)

- I like that, so smooth.

- And this is a trombone.

It sounds really cool, listen.

- Okay.

(BJ playing the trombone)

- [Barney] Oh, my.

(children chuckling happily)

- See, nothing like a trombone to get people smiling.

- Oh that's true.

- Wow, his horn is almost as big as Barney!

- That's a tuba, Nick.

And if I remember correctly,

Barney is quite a good tuba player.

- Oh well, I have tooted a tuba tune or two in my time.

That's true. (everyone laughing)

- Would you please play something for us, Barney?

- [Kids, Mr.Boyd, BJ] Please?

- Okay, now the tuba sounds bigger, deeper,

and lower than the other horns, like this.

(Barney playing the tuba)

- [BJ] Whoa!


(kids laughing)

- Oops, I'm sorry, guess I got a little

carried away with that last note.

- Wow, Barney!

When you play the tuba, you really get down.

(everyone laughing)

- [Barney] Thank you, BJ.

- As you heard, each of these horns

has a special sound,

and each lets us play music

in so many different ways!

But you don't need a horn to make music.

- [Barney] Oh, boy. - [BJ] Cool.

♪ If you clap your hands and stamp your feet ♪

♪ You've started making music

♪ Cause you've started a b*at

♪ Maybe play a kazoo it's so much fun ♪

♪ Music is for everyone

- [Barney] Whoa!

♪ Blow into a trumpet or a slide trombone ♪

♪ Maybe play a tuba or a sousaphone ♪

- Oh, I just love making music, it's so much fun.

- Making music is fun, Barney.

That's why I just have to learn to play my trumpet.

(Angela playing the trumpet)

Ooh, that wasn't very good.

- It's music to my ears, Angela.

Just keep practicing, and you'll get better every day.

- That's right, well if you'll excuse me everyone,

I have to go out to the band stand

to hang decorations for tonight's concert.

But please, would you do me a big favor?

- [Kids and BJ] Yeah sure.

- How can we help?

- Well, I have some pictures

of horn players to decorate the room,

and I know they're in here somewhere

I just can't remember where I put them down.

- Ho, ho, don't worry!

We'll find them and put them up for you, Mr. Boyd.

- [Kids] Yeah. - [Barney] Oh good idea.

- Thanks, that would be a big help.

- Let us know when the band gets here, Mr. Boyd.

- Oh, I will.

- [Barney] Bye, bye Mr. Boyd. - [Kids and BJ] Bye, bye.

see you later.

- Well is everyone ready for a picture hunt?

- [Kids and BJ] Oh yeah.

- Then tally-ho and off we go!

(soft music)

- [Kids and BJ] Not yet, Barney.

- Well, we've looked almost everywhere.

Now where could those pictures be?

- Maybe, here.

(dramatic music)

- Whoa, ho, ho.

Oh yep there they are! - Yeah!

- Pictures of horn players.

- Here's the marching band.

- [Nick] Cool, this is Old King Cole.


- Wow.

- Oh wow and that's Little Boy Blue!

- I'm really good at that.

- Oh, blowing a horn?

- No, sleeping.

(everyone laughing)

- [Barney] Oh, nice.

(sheep bleating)

(cow mooing)

♪ He's under the haystack fast asleep ♪

- Huh?

- Hey, Little Boy Blue, come blow your horn.

Time to call in your cows and sheep.

(Barney laughing)

(sheep bleating)

- Hey?

- Well uh...

- Well, if Little Boy Blue won't blow his horn,

I'm gonna take it to Old King Cole's castle.

I know he's looking for horn players.

- Okay.

(soft music)

- There, that looks nice.

- Yeah it does.

- Very nice.


(music playing)

- Say, do I hear horns out in the park?

- [Kids] The band!

- I think you're right.

- [Nick] Come on, come on run.

- Oh boy , let's go see.

- [BJ] They're here!

- [Angela] They're here, the band is here, you guys!

- [BJ] Alright!

- [Barney] Oh, look, there they are!

- [BJ] Oh, wow!

- [Barney] I can't wait to hear them all.

- [BJ] Oh look at them all, that's so cool.

- Oh hey, guys!

Barney, BJ, Angela, Nick, and Gianna,

I'd like you to meet my horn playing friends.

- [Barney] Oh hello,

nice to meet you. - [BJ] Nice to meet you.

- Say, do you guys need a drummer?

(BJ drumming)

- Oh, BJ.

- Not today, BJ, only horns but thanks for asking.

- Well, let me know if you change your mind.

- Angela, I see you have a trumpet.

- Well, I'm just learning to play, but I practice a lot.

- And she can't wait to hear you play.

- That's right. - We all wanna hear you play.

- Oh yeah. - Yes we do.

- Okay, we're about to practice a song

for tonight's concert, but first,

would you like to hear how each

instrument sounds by itself?

- [BJ] Oh yeah.

- There's an idea.

- And then you can hear how it sounds

when we all play together.

- [BJ] All right.

- [Barnes] That would be great!

- The trumpets will play this part.

(soft trumpet music)

- [Barney] Oh wow!

- [BJ] Neat! - [Kids] Cool!

- My French horn will play the song this way.

(soft french horn music)

- [Barney] She's good. - [BJ] Oh cool.

- Here's how my trombone will play the song.

(soft trombone music)

- [Barney] That looks funny. - Oh awesome!

- And he'll play the song this way on the tuba.

(soft tuba music)

- [Barney] My favorite. - Oh look out.

- And now, here's how we sound together.

- [Barney] Oh this is gonna be great!

- [BJ] Oh yeah, it's a real brass band.

- [Barney] Oh it is.

(soft instrumental music)

- [BJ] He's the tuba master.

(soft instrumental music)

- [Barney] Oh boy. - [Nick] oh man.

- [Nick and Barney] that was great.

- [Barney] Oh really, really good.

- [Gianna] Oh yeah.

- I know Mr. Boyd plays French horn well.

- Well...

- And I hear Barney is a pretty good tuba player.

- Well, you know...

- Oh he's the Grand Poobah of the tuba.

(all laughing)

- [Barney] Thank you, BJ.

- Well why don't you two join us.

We'll play a faster song that you'll really enjoy!

- [Barney] Oh okay.

- And BJ, you can play the drums.

- Oh, man, you guys are the best!

Oh okay.

(soft music)

- Ho, ho how about a little bit of drumming.

- [Barney] Oh BJ.

(Barney chuckles)

(soft music)

(applause)

- Hoo hoo, oh yeah, cool fantastic!

(kids jubilating)

- He's been practicing his clapping.

- Oh, I see that.

Oh well, thanks for letting me play with you,

it was lots of fun!

- [BJ] Yeah.

- Oh, thank you, Barney.

You can toot a tuba with us anytime.

- [Barney] Okay.

- Yeah, that was really cool.

- [Barney] It really was.

- Oh, yeah, I had fun too.

Say, would you like to check out

the horn display I've set up in the caboose?

(everyone chattering in excitement)

- [Kids] Bye, bye.

- [Barney] Thanks again bye, bye.

- [BJ] Thanks guys see you.


- BJ you did really good.

- Thanks!

- Wow, you were great, Barney.

- Thank you, Angela, I like making music

and it's even more fun

when I'm doing it with friends I love.

- Oh yeah.

- I can't wait to tell my family about the brass band.

We're all coming back tonight for the big concert.

- I'd better go get ready for tonight too, Barney bye.

- Are you coming, Angela?

- No, you go on, I'm gonna stay

and practice my trumpet a little more.
